The Guru Summer League Report: Seedings for Eight Teams on the Line (All Nine Potential Tiebreak Scenarios Noted) in Tuesday’s Final Night Ahead of the Playoffs

HATBORO, Pa. – The regular season in the ten-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym concludes Tuesday night (tonite if you are reading this on July 16th) and four of the five games will have seedings on the line for the playoffs which begin Thursday night with a play-in doubleheader to the quarterfinals with the 10th seed meeting the 7th at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 followed by the 8th and 9th seed meeting at 7:45 p.m. on the same court.

The four-game quarterfinals are on Tuesday, July 23rd at 6.30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. with doubleheaders on Courts 1 and 2. The two-game semifinals are Thursday, July 25th on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. and then one week later on Thursday, August 1, the title game will be at 7 p.m. on Court 1.

Looking Ahead

The schedule for the penultimate Games 9 at 6:30 p.m., Orange (4-4) meets Maroon/D3-Arcadia on Court 1 while Purple Haze/D2-West Chester meets Black/D2-Jefferson on Court 2, both teams in a three-way tie for second at 6-2.

The 7:45 p.m. nightcaps have Royal Blue/D2-Goldey-Beacom (1-8) meeting Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill on Court 1; Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family (5-3) meeting Lime Citrus (6-2) on Court 2, and Sunburst (0-8) meeting Cyber Pink (7-1) on Court 3.

Implications

Here are the nine scenarios to break all seeding ties that could result in the final standings.

1-The easiest is the game between Cyber Pink and Sunburst because even if the longest shot of the summer happens with an upset, Cyber Pink clinched first ahead of Thursday’s narrow upset loss to Sky Blue, its first, and owns all tiebreakers while Sunburst will be 10th because it cannot win any tiebreakers.

Three of the four opening round teams are decided though the other two seeds are not yet decided, while the Maroon/Orange Citrus will earn a bye to the quarterfinals.

2-The winner of Black/Purple Haze can win sole possession of second place if Lime Citrus loses to Sky Blue but if either of the combo finish in a two-way tie off a Lime Citrus win, Black has the head-to-head tiebreak win over Lime Citrus, while Lime Citrus has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Purple Haze.

3-In a three-way tie for third, caused by Sky Blue beating Lime Citrus and then coupled with the Black/Purple Haze loser, there are two combinations.

Results within themselves in a deadlock of Black-Lime Citrus-Sky Blue, Black at 2-0 gets third and then off the head-to-head Sky Blue by winning its last game on a head-to-head gets fourth and Lime Citrus is fifth.

4-But if it’s Purple Haze-Lime Citrus-Sky Blue, they are all 1-1. All three lost to what would be the best team in this setup being Black.

If Orange Citrus becomes sixth, the next available, Sky Blue lost and drops to fifth, the other two won, and then using head-to-head, Lime Citrus beat Purple Haze to earn third and Purple Haze is fourth.

Should Maroon become sixth, all three got wins over Arcadia, so Orange Citrus as the tie breaking determination in above, even at seventh, is still the key opponent.

5-If Sky Blue loses and Orange Citrus beats Maroon to secure the last quarterfinal bye, there is a tie for fifth place and Orange Citrus off its overtime win gets the nod with Sky Blue being sixth.

6-Sky Blue loses but holds fifth alone as Maroon beats Orange Citrus in the last game to take the head-to-head and jump into sixth place and Orange Citrus is relegated to a play-in game at seventh opening Thursday with Sunburst.

7-Maroon loses and Red Fire beats Royal Blue which creates a seventh-place tie, the seed to Maroon off its win over Red Fire.

8-Royal beats Red Fire to tie for eighth and gets the seed off the head-to-head and they meet again in the second game on Thursday night.

9-Finally, Sunburst does the shocker beating Cyber Pink and a Royal Blue loss creates a ninth-place tie which holds off the earlier win over Sunburst.

That also means Cyber Pink with a second straight loss could finish at the top in a two-way with Purple Haze or Black or a three-way deadlock adding Lime Citrus but with a perfect record stays at first.

As mentioned in an earlier scenario, Black would be second tied with Lime Citrus but Lime Citrus would be in the slot if Purple Haze is the other team.

By the way even if Sunburst ends up winless, the 10th seed in a similar situation a year ago pulled a first-round upset and Sunburst hit a two-game stretch with narrow setbacks include a one-point loss in overtime to Orange Citrus.
