The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Defending Champion Cyber Pink (USciences Alums) Stays Unbeaten and Moves Into Sole Possession of First Placer

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — The reigning champion Cyber Pink squad, composed of alums from the former D2-USciences, are the last team with a perfect record in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League, winning the battle of 4-0 unbeatens 74-55 over Purple Haze, the D2-West Chester squad, Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The ten teams all reached the halfway point on the nine-game schedule with one more group of five contests to be played Thursday night before the league goes idle for a week observing the 4th of July break.

Play resumes Tuesday, July 9.

Purple Haze, though, is alone in second place as a result of Orange Citrus, one of the four draft squads not dominated by one of the winter D2-D3 teams, pulling a second-straight upset, this one a 49-43 win over Sky Blue, the D2-Holy Family contingent.

The losers fell into a 3-2, four-way tie for third, though this time in a slightly different alignment than the prior combination from last time out.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the standings, new entry Royal Blue, D2-Goldey-Beacom, got its first win topping Sunburst 61-37, an opponent, which is another of the four draft teams, that also was after its first win.

Meanwhile, Lime Citrus joined the 3-2 gridlock by edging Red Fire, the D2 group from Chestnut Hill, 66-62, which dropped to sole possession of seventh place at 2-3.

Seeds 7-10 will play an opening round doubleheader in the playoffs, which begin late next month.

In the remaining game, Black, the D2-Jefferson team, topped Maroon/D3-Arcadia, 83-57, dropping the opposition into a two-way tie for eighth with Royal Blue at 1-4.

Two players hit the 20 or more points nightly highlight standard, Rylee Derr rode seven from deep to account for 21 of her 30 points for Cyber Pink, while Emily Spratt on Black led the winners with 21 points.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday wrapping up the front end of the season, Black and Sky Blue both at 3-2 meet on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. bringing together their winter rivalry from the Southern Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Association (CACC).

Cyber Pink plays the other early game bringing its 5-0 record against 1-4 Royal Blue on Court 2. The two teams are also part of the D2 Southern Section of the CACC.

In the 7:45 p.m. night games that include the single game on Court 3, Orange Citrus (3-2) meets Sunburst (0-5) on Court 1, Lime Citrus (3-2) meets Purple Haze (4-1) on Court 2, and on the far Court 3, Maroon (1-4) meets meets Red Fire (2-3).

Setting the Seeds

The entire standings aren’t all self-determining yet, surely some ties will occur at the finish next month, but as of the moment if the playoffs start today, Cyber Pink is alone in first at 5-0, followed a game behind by Purple Haze (4-1) in second.

In the current four-way tie with the 3-2 teams for third, Orange Citrus bolts to third, being 2-0 in the group, followed by Black at 1-1, while Lime Citrus and Sky Blue, 0-1 each, would be placed alphabetical but with no way to use available tiebreakers right now, a coin flip would need to be used.

For the moment, though, those six are in bye slots to the quarterfinals.

Red First and Royal Blue are placed in eighth and ninth alphabetical at 1-4 and in need of a flip right now, while Sunburst (0-5) is alone in tenth.

Incidentally at the bottom of the scoreboard section, we’re re-running the rosters again due to some additions and wrong number placements since the original list was sent in the preseason.

Now, here’s Bob with the details of the five games.

Recaps

Cyber Pink 74 Purple Haze 55

Rylee Derr scored 30 points as Cyber Pink (alumni team) won the battle of the unbeatens, defeating Purple Haze (D-II West Chester) 74-55 in the late game on court one at Kelly Bolish gym Tuesday night.

Pink improves to 5-0 on the season and is the sole remaining unbeaten team in the league while Purple suffers their first loss of the season and drops to second place with a 4-1 record.

Derr (Kutztown ’22) scored 12 of her points in the first quarter and added eight in Pink’s dominant third quarter enroute to her highest point total of the season thus far, connecting on seven three-point baskets. Taylor Hamm (USciences) added 16 points while Jenifer Kremp (USciences’22) chipped in 10 points.

Mia Kozicki led Purple with 16 points while Anna McTamney and Rachel Conran chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively.

Pink opened up an eight-point lead after the first quarter and still led by eight 27-21 in the second when Purple went on a 9-0 run with three points baskets from Mia Stock (DeSales’27), McTamney, and Conran to take their first lead of the game at 30-27.

Pink followed with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 35-32.

Purple closed within one twice before Kate Connolly (Drexel’23) sank a three-point basket in the final seconds of the quarter to give Pink a 40-36 lead at halftime.

Derr scored all of her third quarter points early in the period as Pink opened the quarter with a 12-2 run to take a double-digit lead 52-38, putting Pink firmly in control as they cruised to a 61-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Pink expanded their lead in the first seven minutes of the quarter, taking a 74-52 lead following Derr’s final basket of the game.

McTamney scored the final three points of the gam to make the final margin 19, 74-55.

Orange Citrus 49 Sky Blue 43

It was another low scoring game for the Orange Citrus (draft team) team as they pulled off a win against one of the Division II squads, Sky Blue (D-II holy Family University), 49-43 in the late game on Court Two.

Orange is now in a four-way tie for third place with 3-2 record with the win along with Sky Blue who fell to 3-2 with the loss. The win followed another over Black (D-II Jefferson University) last Thursday.

Nicole Timko (Carnegie Mellon ’26) led Orange with 11 points while Kyra Quigley (Scranton’23) added ten points.

Amy Ngo had 13 points to pace the Sky squad while Taylor Hinkle added ten.

Sky had the early lead in the low scoring effort and led before three-point baskets from Daniella McDonald (Wheaton ’28) and Timko gave Orange their first lead of the game at 13-10 before the two teams ended the quarter deadlocked at 15-15.

Sky took the lead with a basket to open the quarter and led 25-24 when Orange went on a 7-2 run to take a 31-27 lead.

Skyler Searfoss brought Sky within one, 31-30 before Orange netted one more basket to lead 33-30 at the half.

The two teams combined for just 11 points in the third quarter as Orange increased their lead to 40-34.

A 7-0 run by Sky with Ngo netting the final five points gave her team a 41-40 lead.

Quigley and Timko followed with baskets to put Orange back ahead 44-41.

After both teams exchanged baskets, Orange still held a three-point lead with less than a minute left, forcing Sky to foul and put Orange at the free throw line where they connected on three of four in the final 25 seconds (Timko- two; Sydney Blum (College of NJ ’23)- one) to seal the 49-43 win.

Royal Blue 61 Sunburst 37

In a battle of the remaining two winless teams, Royal Blue (D-II Goldey-Beacom College) had a dominant second half, turning a four-point lead into a 24-point win 61-37 over Sunburst (draft team) in the early game on Court Two.

Royal improves to 1-4 while Sunburst drops to 0-5.

Four players reached double figures for Royal, led by Madalynn Bernhardt’s 13 points.  Angelina Zagone and Azuri Abraham added 12 points apiece while Julie McCarron chipped in 11.

Jessica Mastriano (Rowan ’26) was the lone Sunburst player to reach double figures with 14 points.

Sunburst jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and led 14-11 after one quarter.

Baskets by Vanessa Amsinger (Swarthmore ’25) and Katelyn Becker (Swarthmore’25) pushed the lead to 19-11 in the second quarter.

Royal closed out the quarter with 12 straight points capped with a Janie Cross three-point basket to lead 23-19 at halftime.

McCarron and Abraham combined for 17 points in the third quarter as Royal outscored Sunburst 23-7 in the period to take an insurmountable 46-26 lead heading into the final period.  McCarron sank three three-point baskets while Abraham had two long balls and a short jumper.

Abraham and Cross capped off a 15-3 run to open the fourth quarter with Abrahm sinking a three-pointer and Cross a two-pointer as Royal took their biggest lead 61-29. Late in the period Sunburst scored the final eight points in the final three minutes to make the final margin 24 points, 61-37.

Lime Citrus 66 Red Fire 62

In what turned out to be the closest contest of the night and a battle between two teams with identical 2-2 records, Lime Citrus (draft team) outlasted a shorthanded Red Fire (D-II Chestnut Hill College) squad, 66-62 in the early game on Court One.

Lime is now 3-2 on the season and is in a four-way tie for third place.  Red falls to 2-3 and seventh place in the league standings.

Leah Johnson (West Chester ’24) led Lime with 18 points (four three-pointers) while Dayna Balasa (Arcadia ’25) knocked down five three-pointers for 15 points.

Sara Tamoun led Red with 15 points while Kathryn Randa (Kutztown ’28) chipped in 13.  Julianna DiFebbo and Caraline Herb chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively for the Red squad, which dressed just six players for the contest.

Red led by six after one quarter 20-14.

Three straight three-balls from Lime, two from Balasa and one from Geena Sarnowski, erased the deficit and put Lime on top 23-20.

A basket from Tamoun and a three-ball from Herb shifted the momentum back to Red with a 25-23 lead which they held until late in the period when Johnson and Balasa put the long ball to work again, erasing a five-point deficit and giving Lime a 36-33 lead before settling in for a 38-37 advantage at halftime.

Herb and Tamoun both scored to start the third quarter, giving Red a 41-38 lead.

Lime then exploded with a 12-2 uprising to take the first double-digit lead of the game 53-43.

Randa and DiFebbo brought Red back within seven 54-47 as the two teams entered the final period.

The lead oscillated between five and eight points as Red struggled to cut into the differential.

Lime led 62-54 when a 6-0 Red run closed the gap to just two points 62-60 with 2:20 left in the game.

Following a Red timeout, Lime got a defensive stop and Red was forced to foul to put Johnson on the free throw line with 15 seconds left.

She made both free throws and Tamoun followed with a basket to keep the Red squad withing two 64-62.

Lime’s Alexa Naessens was fouled and she sealed the win with two free throws with 3.4 seconds left.

Black 83 Maroon 57

Team Black (D-II Jefferson University) got back on the winning track with a dominant second half as they handed Maroon (D-III Arcadia University) an 83-57 loss in the Court Three late game Tuesday night.

Black improves to 3-2 and is in a tie for third place in the league standings. Maroon drops to 1-4.

Emily Spratt led Black with 21 points. Caleigh Sperling and Cassie Murphy had 17 points apiece. Taylor Koenig was the only player in double figures for Maroon with 18 points.

Maroon scored the first four points but Black quickly responded with a 10-5 outburst to take a 14-9 lead, increasing in to 32-15 by the end of the first quarter.

Koenig scored 13 of her 18 points in the second quarter as Maroon battled back, outscoring Black 23-10 in the period to pull within four 42-38 at halftime.

The Maroon squad cut the Black lead to two with a basket to open the third quarter 42-40 but Black soon began to clamp down on defense while their offense came alive with a 10-0 outburst to take a 52-40 lead midway through the quarter.

Black finished the final five minutes of the third period by outscoring Maroon 13-3 to lead 65-43 heading into the final quarter.

Spratt (13 points) and Sperling (eight points) combined for 21 of Black’s 23 points in the period with Murphy accounting for the other two points.

Murphy had seven fourth quarter points as Black never let the lead dip under 20 points as they closed out the game with the 83-57 win.
