The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Cyber Pink Upsets Black (D2-Jefferson) on Opening Night

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — The 30th anniversary edition (would be 31 if not for COVID) of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League kicked off here Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renengades.

It’s also the 30th season run by David Kessler, who serves as the commissioner.

A quick note to say there’s no double byline in this week’s two reports because Bob Heller, who provides such magnificent detail with what can be gleaned, is vacationing out in California, but he will be back the rest of the way starting next week.

In the interim, your Guru will wing-it on the game action.

Since there was no advance ahead of the opener, here are details for the league to know.

This year’s lineup — primarily out of NCAA D-2 and D-3 locals — will include ten teams.

The gym, which has a snack stand, is located at 2950 Turnpike Drive, not far from the Route 611 exit and very near the intersection of Davisville and Byberry Roads. Admission is free.

Under NCAA rules, the lower divisions can compete with as much as their entire winter rosters, their coaches can attend but not be on the sidelines.

Games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the July 4th week being dark, resulting in a nine-game per team regular-season schedule ending July 16th.

Doubleheaders will occur with tip times at 6:30 p.m. (15-minute grace before a forfeit called for lack of players) and 7:45 p.m. on Courts 1 and 2 and a third game at 7:45 p.m. also occurring on Court 3.

Everyone gets in the playoffs, night one the four low seeds meet, followed by quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship is August 1.

Below all this narrative coverage, including some extras for the opener, will be the Guru compiled stats consisting of standings, running list of players scoring 20 or more points, the entire schedule with running results by night as they occur before listing the games ahead, a seeding tracker grid, though until enough games, listing will be alphabetical, schedules by teams, and in this edition, the rosters, though there will be a few tweaks later on details.

Teams are listed by color but initially the six winter squads will be listed in parenthesis while the rest will be noted as draft teams one, two, three and four, which are squads assembled with a combo from everyone else who registered.

Four of the D-2 teams compete in the winter locally in the Southern Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

They are Black/Jefferson, Red Fire/Chestnut Hill, Sky Blue/Holy Family, and Royal Blue/Goldey-Beacom, which is new as an entity to the league. The USciences and Cabrini teams of recent vintage are gone as a result of the schools closing down, though alums are playing in the league.

The two other school dominated squads are Purple Haze/D2 West Chester and Maroon/D3 Arcadia.

Your other squads are Cyber Pink/Draft Team-1; Lime Citrus/Draft Team-2; Orange Citrus/Draft Team-3; and Sunburst/Draft Team-4.

By in-coming status this winter ’25 on rosters are seniors, ’26 are juniors, ’27 are sophomores, and ’28 are freshmen.

All others are alums, including from two local D-1 schools, recent La Salle grad Molly Masciantonio and previous Drexel grad Kate Connolly.

New Chestnut Hill coach Megan Fox was in the house as was Jefferson’s Tom Shirley, and Arcadia’s Jackie Hartzell.

Act of Respect

Team Maroon on the roster lists #1-Ivy Glaser, who is 10 years old, plays on Katie’s Komets AAU team, but is also an adopted player by the Arcadia group. Thus, the commissioner rostered her and got her a shirt.

Opening Night Chaos

Some of the colors designated this year by the commissioner to his liking were given different names to what jerseys for team pickup were at the table by the various teams.

So, while nice Kelly Green (past designation) shirts were for set for the Lime Citrus group, when Kessler was away from the table, we, his helpers, didn’t realize those where the shirts. Likewise for Yellow, now known as Sunburst.

There was a first-ever opening night forfeit, Goldey-Beacom had an emergency limiting the roster, resulting though in only one West Chester player showing due to distance driven by the group to get to the venue.

The commissioner did look for a way to avoid the forfeit, in the past teams played twice the same night, but this year’s schedule made it unworkable.

There were a bunch of missing players on night one due to graduations, a Rolling Stones concert, vacations, a trip to Italy, and Holy Family, which still had a lop-sided win, nursing a five-player roster, giving a break during short stretches to one of the quintet, who is coming back from an injury.

Recaps

Sky Blue (Holy Family) 90, Maroon (Arcadia) 54

This one was over quickly and the sole player on the night scoring 20 or more points went to the winners’ Claire Dougherty, who tallied 36 points (points the only stat kept in the league), one of the more productive efforts in recent seasons.

Jessica Ripe rode four triplets to 18 points and Taylor Hinkle scored 14.

On Maroon, Hannah Rhoades had 15 points, Delaney Bell scored nine, Kylie Meredith scored eight, and Taylor Koenig scored seven.

Red Fire (Chestnut Hill) 73, Orange Citrus 59

The winners got 16 points from Sara Tamoun, while Avery White Scored 13, Julianna DiFebbo had 11, and five others also scored.

The Draft group got 17 from Nicole Timko, eight each from Rachel Saxon and Kyra Quigley, while Sydney Blum, a perfect 4-4 from the line, scored seven, and five others got on the scoreboard.

Cyber Pink 67, Black (Jefferson) 57

Perhaps the night’s big upset, the draft group beat a Rams bunch that has dominated summer play, using it to build to winter success, as Rylee Derr scored 17, former USciences star Taylor Hamm scoring 16, and Jennifer Kremp with 12 points.

The Jefferson squad got 18 points from Jordyn Thomas, while Kaci Mikulski scored eight, and five others scored.

Lime Citrus 71, Sunburst 55

In a game between two draft squads, the winners got 17 points from Annie Aspesi, while former La Salle star Molly Masciantonio scored 13, Dayna Balasa had three triples and also scored 13, Leah Johnson had 10, with four others also on the scoreboard.

Katelyn Becker led Sunburst with 13 points, Anna Hanson scored 11, Shayla Johnson also reached double digits with 10 points, and five others also scored.

Purple Haze 2, Royal Blue (Goldey-Beacom 0), forfeit
