The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Purple Haze (D2-West Chester) and Cyber Pink (D2-USciences Alums) Stay Perfect at 4-0 Heading to Tuesday’s Showdown

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Purple Haze, the D2-West Chester Squad; and Cyber Pink, the alums from the former D2-USciences program, stayed unbeaten in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League Thursday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, as week two concluded in the ten-team operation this season.

But one of them won’t remain so much longer, meeting Tuesday night in the highlight attraction of the five-game nightly schedule at 7:45 p.m. on Court 1.

Purple Haze had a bit of challenge from the draft team Sunburst squad, but when all was settled, they prevailed 59-53 to keep Sunburst winless at 0-4.

Cyber Pink had little difficulty winning 72-58 over Red Fire, the D2 Chestnut Hill contingent to drop the opposition to 2-2 in a four-way tie for fourth place.

Two games went to the wire, Orange Citrus, a draft team group edging Black, the D2-Jefferson team, 47-44, dropping the Rams in the four-way bunch at 2-2 and rising in the group with the same record.

And Lime Citrus also went to 2-2 edging Maroon, the D3 Arcadia squad, 51-50, dropping the opposition to 1-3.

Sky Blue (3-1), the D2-Holy Family team, bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to take sole possession of third, taking a 80-52 triumph easily beating winless Royal Blue, their D2 Goldey-Beacom rival in the winter in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Southern Division.

Four players hit the 20-plus scoring total, two from Sky Blue in Jessica Riepe with 24 and Claire Dougherty with 22, while Cyber Pink’s Rylee Derr had the night’s top performance with 29 points.

Lime Citrus’ Leah Johnson scored 20.

Looking Ahead

Besides one team heading for its first loss in the Cyber Pink/Purple Haze showdown Tuesday, another will get its first win in a battle of 0-4 teams when Royal Blue and Sunburst play at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2.

Two 2-2 squads will also hook up in a 6:30 p.m. opener on Court 1 when Red Fire and Lime Citrus play.

In the two other games, Sky Blue (3-1) meets Orange Citrus (2-2) at 7:45 p.m. on Court 2 while at the same time, Maroon (1-3) and Black (2-2) meet on Court 3.

Setting the Seeds

Heading to the halfway point on the nine-game schedule per team, more of the real seeds of the moment are determining the standings, though it’s still early yet.

While the two unbeaten teams are tied for first, Purple Haze with the win over Sky Blue, alone in third, gets the top seed, and Cyber Pink is second with head-to-head refining it on Tuesday.

In the four-way, which will ultimately sort itself more, Red Fire moves to fourth at 1-0 within the group, while Orange Citrus moves to fifth with the win over Black, while Lime Citrus’ previous loss to Black puts Black sixth and Lime Citrus seventh, the first play-in spot.

Maroon is alone in eighth at 1-3 and still in an alphabetical sort until they meet Tuesday, Royal Blue is ninth and Sunburst 10th.

Now here’s Bob with the recaps followed by the scoreboard.

Recaps

Purple Haze 59 Sunburst 53

The undefeated Purple Haze (D-II West Chester University) team needed a fourth quarter rally as they held off a tenacious Sunburst (draft team) squad 57-53 to remain perfect.

Purple is one of two teams remaining with a perfect 4-0 record while Sunburst falls to 0-4.

Aaliyah Solliday led the Purple squad with 18 points. Rachel Conran and Ava Mazur had 14 and 13 points respectively.

Vanessa Amsinger (Swarthmore ’25) and Brianna Mastriano had 19 and 12 points to pace the Sunburst squad.

Tied at 28-28 at halftime, Sunburst opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 37-31 lead following a Tabby DeVries (Houghton’27) basket. Bella Mazur brought Purple back within one with back-to-back baskets, including a three-pointer.

Sunburst still held a one-point lead 42-41 heading into the final quarter.

Amsinger opened the period with a pair of three-point baskets to lead 48-41 before Purple exploded for a 14-1 run to retake the lead 55-49 with three minutes left.

Ava Mazur’s basket tied the game at 49-49 while Conran put Purple ahead to stay.

Sunburst would come no closer than four the rest of the way with Solliday scoring the final points in the six-point win.

Cyber Pink 72 Red Fire 58

Cyber Pink (alumni players) used a dominant first quarter to remain undefeated as they cruised to a 72-58 win over Red Fire (D-II Chestnut Hill College) in the late game on Court 1.

Pink keeps pace with Purple Haze at 4-0 overall. Red falls into a four-way tie for fourth place in the league with a 2-2 record.

Rylee Derr (Kutztown’22) led all scorers with 29 points, while Kaitlyn Carter (Chestnut Hill ’24) added 14 points.

Tikyra Miller, an incoming freshman for Chestnut Hill, led the team with 17 points.

Pink led wire-to-wire with only a brief tie at 2-2 in the first quarter.

Kate Connolly (Drexel ’23) had seven points and Carter added four as Pink jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one period.

The lead was still 13 at 25-12 when Red scored seven straight points (four from Bridie McCann and a three-ball from Sara Tamoun to pull within six 25-19.)

Following a timeout Pink went on a 7-2 run to go back up by double figures before settling in for a nine-point lead, 40-31, at halftime.

Red shaved just one point off the lead in the third quarter, but Pink built the lead to as much as 15 in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Crim’s (Chestnut Hill ’23) traditional three-point play rounded out the scoring as Pink finished with a 72-58 win.

Orange Citrus 47 Black 43

In what was the lowest scoring game of the night Orange Citrus (draft team) rallied in the fourth quarter to upset Black (D-II Jefferson University), 47-43 on court three.

Black falls to 2-2 while Orange improves to 2-2.

Both teams are now in a tie for fourth place in the league standings.

Reagan Chrencik (Gettysburg ’27) led Orange with 12 points while Nicole Timko (Carnegie Mellon ’26), Sydney Blum (College of New Jersey ’23) and Katie McGrath (Muhlenberg’23) had eight points apiece.

Sam Yencha led black with 13 points while Tori Nigro chipped in nine.

Black opened up a 15-10 lead after one quarter and increased it to 31-19 by halftime.

Six different Orange players had at least one basket in the third quarter as they outscored Black 14-7 in the period and pulled within five 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Orange continued to chip away at Black lead during fourth quarter play and held a 44-41 lead with 1:50 left.

After Orange was fouled and failed to convert at the free throw line, Yencha drew a foul and sank both free throws to close the gap to one 44-43.

Timko thank sank two free throws and Quigly connected on one of two to seal the four-point win.

Lime Citrus 51 Maroon 50

In what was the closest final of the night, Lime Citrus’ (draft team) Jess Huber (USciences ’21) converted a traditional three-point play to lift her team to a 51-50 win over Maroon (D-III Arcadia University) in the other early game of the night.

Lime improved to 2-2 while Maroon fell to 1-3.

Leah Johnson (West Chester ’24) led all scorers with 20 points while Huber added ten.

Maroon’s Scarlett Glasser-Nehls led her team with 12 points while Delaney Bell added ten.

Bell had seven of her ten points in the first quarter as Maroon opened up a 16-6 lead after the first ten minutes of action.

Glasser Nehls and Quinlyn Fisher scored three points apiece as Maroon expanded their lead to 22-8 with a 6-2 run to start the second quarter.

The lead oscillated between eight and 12 points the rest of the quarter with Maroon holding a 32-30 lead at halftime.

Lime’s defense held Maroon to just one basket in the first 8:30 of the third quarter while running off 14 straight points to take their first lead of the game.

Johnson scored 16 of her 20 points in the third quarter while Dayna Balasa’s basket with 1:29 left switched the lead to Lime’s favor.

Maroon closed within one twice in fourth quarter and Sophia Rasiul’s three-point basket tied the game at 46-46 with 5:22 left.

Glasser-Nehls followed with a score to put Maroon ahead 48-46.

Johnson’s jumper tied the game 48-48 and Fisher again put the Maroon squad ahead at 50-48 with just over two minutes left.

Huber then drove to the basket and was fouled as she made a layup with 1:34 left.

The USciences alum sank the free throw to put her team ahead 51-50.

Neither team scored on their final possessions and Lime held on for the win.

Sky Blue 80 Royal Blue 52

Sky Blue (D-II Holy Family University) led wire-to-wire and they cruised to an 80-52 win over Royal Blue (D-II Goldey-Beacom College) to keep pace with the league leaders.

Sky improves to 3-1 and is in sole possession of third place after four games. Royal falls to 0-4.
