The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Purple Haze Rallies and Cyber Pink Romps to Quickly Become Last Two Unbeatens at 3-0

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. – For the second time in a week 17 loomed large in a comeback in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Opening week saw Cyber Pink, the alumni contingent from the former USCiences school, use a late 17-0 run to prevail in night two of opening week, while here on Tuesday Purple Haze, the D2-West Chester bunch, was down the same number in the third period to Sky Blue, the D2-Holy Family group, in battle of unbeaten teams,  but came back to win 70-67 over the Tigers in a nightcap on Court 2 to stay perfect.

While Sky Blue (2-1) took its first loss, Taylor Hamm turned in the night’s and season’s best performance with 37 points in a 67-44 win over Maroon, the D3-squad from Arcadia, which fell to 1-2.

Hamm was 7-9 from the line. Lexie Edwards scored 12 and Kate Connolly, a former D1-Drexel star, added 11 for the winners.

Kylie Meredith had 10 points for Maroon, Quinlyn Fisher scored eight, while Delaney Bell and Delaney Finn each scored six points.

Two others had 20 or more points in their highlight games.

Rachel Conrad had 25 points, with three shots from deep, for the winning Purple Haze squad, while Anna McTamney scored 12 points.

The Sky Blue team got 16 points from Jessica Riepe, who nailed four shots from deep, while Taylor Hinkle scored 14, Skyler Searfoss scored 13, and Claire Dougherty scored 12.

Though Royal Blue (0-3), the D2-Goldey Beacom team, is still winless, Katie Yoder had 24 points for the second time in a week, this one in a 61-52 loss to Orange Citrus (1-2), one of the four draft teams, which got its first win.

Abigail Marino got 15 for the winners, while Sydney Blum, helped by four connects from beyond the arc, scored 14, as did Kyra Quigley.

Two teams are tied with Sky Blue for third heading into Thursday’s second game night of the week.

Black (2-1), the D2-Jefferson team, won its second straight, downing Lime Citrus (1-2), another draft team, 68-51, as Sam Yencha scored 18, Emma Kuczynski scored 13, Cassie Murphy scored nine, and Kaci Mikulski scored eight.

Line Citrus got 12 from Annie Aspesi, while Leah Johnson scored 11, and Shira Newman scored 10, and Angelina Dragone scored eight.

In the other game, Red Fire (2-1), the D2-Chestnut Hill team, stayed a game behind the frontrunners, beating Sunburst (0-3), 58-49, as Sara Tamoun scored 12, aas did Tikyra Miller, while Bridie McCann had 10 points, Julianna DiFebbo and Angela Sanders each scored eight points.

Sunburst got 14 from Jessica McLaughlin, nailing two from deep, and a perfect 2-2 on the line, while Vanessa Amsinger scored 12, and Jessica Mastriano and Shayla Johnson each scored seven points.

Looking Ahead

There’s no standings showdowns in the early phase of the schedule on Thursday, but teams down below fifth will try to avoid losing more ground.

In the 6:30 p.m. games, Sunburst (0-3) will be looking to shock Purple Haze (3-0), playing on Court 1, while Maroon (1-2) meets Lime Citrus (1-2) with identical records meeting on Court 2.

In the 7:45 p.m. nightcaps, Cyber Pink (3-0) meets Red Fire )2-1) on Court 1, Sky Blue (3-0) meets Royal Blue (0-3) on Court 2 — a pair of teams who play in the winter of the Southern Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while over on Court 3, Black (2-1) meets Orange Citrus (1-2).

Setting the Seeds

There’s little relevancy this early yet in terms of the playoffs, but it was possible to set half of the standings as if the regular season ended two, while the bottom five are still in an alphabetical order.

Right now, though they’ll break the tie if both are still unbeaten when they meet next Tuesday, Purple Haze gets the top spot off beating Sky Blue on Tuesday night, with Cyber Blue listed second.

In the three-way tie for third, a head-to head win previously by Sky Blue over Red Fire, places Holy Family in fourth, followed by Black, which has yet to play either of the other two, and then Red Fire off the loss to Sky Blue gets slotted fifth.

Then, it’s alphabetical the rest of the way with tiebreakers yet to be determined, so Lime Citrus, Maroon, and Orange Citrus all at 1-2, with Royal Blue and Sunburst completing the list.

Now, here’s Bob back from his trip, to five you game detail, followed by the scoreboard.

Recaps

Purple Haze 70   Sky Blue 67

In a battle between two undefeated teams, Purple Haze (D-II West Chester University) overcame a 17-point third quarter deficit to defeat Sky Blue (D-II Holy Family University) in one of the three late games Tuesday.

Purple improves to 3-0 while Sky suffered their first loss and falls to 2-1.

Rachel Conran led all scorers with 25 points to pace the victors while Anna McTamney added 12.

Sky placed four players in double figures led by Jessica Riepe’s 16 points. Taylor Hinkle added 14 while Skyler Searfoss and Claire dougherty added 13 and 12 points apiece.

Sky Blue’s outside game was solid in the first two quarters as they opened up a 44-30 lead at halftime, mostly in part to eight three-point baskets (four by Riepe).

Early in the third quarter Sky opened a 17-point advantage 52-35 before Purple started chipping away at the deficit, pulling within ten 56-46 as the two teams headed into the final quarter.

McTamney’s basket with 8:15 left cut the lead to nine 58-49 and the lead swayed back and forth between nine and 11 points over the next couple of possessions before Conran, McTamney and Michelle Kozicki started to chip away.

A 14-4 run gave Purple their first lead since early in the first quarter, 63-62 with 4:10 left.

Searfoss and Kara Meredith scored the next five points as Sky regained the lead 67-63.

Kozicki followed with a basket and Delaney Finnegan sank a three-ball with 2:12 left to put purple back on top 68-67.

Neither team scored over the next couple of possessions as the game went into the final minute.

Following a defensive stop Purple was followed a couple of times before Conran drew a foul with 5.7 seconds left to go to line.

The senior sank both free throws as Purple opened a 70-67 lead.

Sky’s Ava Morrow took a last second shot, but it left her hand after the final buzzer as Purple Haze held on for the win.

Cyber Pink 67 Maroon 44

The league’s other undefeated team heading into Tuesday’s games was also playing in the late time slot, as defending league champion Cyber Pink took control of their game against Maroon ((DIII-Arcadia University) late in the first quarter and cruised to a 67-44 win to remain undefeated.

Pink improves to 3-0 while Maroon falls to 1-2.

The winners received a dominant performance from Taylor Hamm (a USciences alumnus) as she poured in 37 points, including a 7-for-9 effort from the free throw line.

Lexie Edwards (Cabrini ’21) and Kate Connolly (Drexel ’23) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Maroon’s Kyle Meredith led her squad with ten points.

Hamm scored ten second quarter points as Pink turned a nine-point lead into a 23-point advantage by halftime 37-14.

Pink held Maroon without a basket for the first 5:45. Delaney Finn’s basket with 4:15 left in the quarter broke Pink’s 17-0 run which started late in the first quarter.  Finn’s bucket was also Maroon’s only score of the quarter.

The winners extended the lead to their biggest margin, 26-points, 47-21 midway through the third quarter before Maroon scored ten straight to close within 16 at 47-31 in the final minute.

Lauren Crim’s (Chestnut Hill’23) three-pointer at the buzzer made the score 50-31 heading into the final period.

Hamm had 30 points after the first three quarters, one less than the entire maroon team and added seven more in the fourth period as Pink closed out the 23-point win, 67-44.

Black 68 Lime Citrus 51

Team black (D-II Jefferson University) remained one game behind the two remaining undefeated teams with a 68-51 win over team Lime Citrus, which is another team composed of primarily alumni players and organized by Alexa Naessens, a 2022 Colgate University alumnus.

Black improves to 2-1 while Lime citrus falls to 1-2.

Black received 18 points from Sam Yencha, the reigning CACC Player of the Year and another 13 from Emma Kuczynski.

Lime placed three in double figures led by Annie Aspesi’s (Tufts’26) 12 points.  Leah Johnosn (West Chester ’24) and Shira Newman (Millersville ’13) had 11 and ten points, respectively.

Black’s opponent kept within striking distance through most of the first two quarters as Black led for all but a brief moment in the half when both teams were tied at 2-2.

The winners opened up an eight-point lead after one quarter and led by nine after two, 34-25.

Tori Nigro scored all six of her points in the third quarter as Black produced a 10-5 run over the final 5:35 to take a 50-35 lead into the final quarter.

Lime for the most part kept even in the fourth quarter getting baskets from five different players as Jefferson scored a couple of baskets late to complete the 68-51 win.

Red Fire 58 Sunburst 49

Red Fire (D-II Chestnut Hill) also kept pace with the undefeated teams with a hard fought 58-49 win over Sunburst (draft team).

Red improves to 2-1 while Sunburst remains winless at 0-3.

Eight different players scored in a balanced offensive effort from Red, led by Sara Tamoun and Tikaya Miller scoring 12 points apiece.

Bridie McCann added ten points while Julianna Difebbo and Angela Sanders had eight apiece.

Jessica McLaughlin and Vanessa Amsinger led Sunburst with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The teams battled early with a basket from Siobhan Bolan breaking an 8-8 tie and starting a 6-0 run to put Red up 14-8 in the opening quarter.

Sunburst came back with a 7-3 spurt to pull within two 17-15 after the first period.

Two three-balls from McLaughlin and a free throw from Shayla Johnosn pulled Sunburst within one 26-25.

Baskets from DiFebbo and Boylan late in the quarter put some space and gave Red a 32-27 lead as halftime approached.

Jessica Mastriano’s basket to open the third quarter again cut the gap to a single possession 32-30.

Red followed with a 12-6 run, capped by a Miller layup to open up a 44-36 lead before Amsinger trimmed the leads back to four with a basket to close out the third quarter, 44-40.

Sunburst would get no closer than four at any point in the final period and Red would never lead by any more than nine as the two teams battled down the stretch.

Tamoun and Miller closed out the scoring to make the final margin nine points, 58-49.

Orange Citrus 61 Royal Blue 52

In the other early game, Orange Citrus (draft team) and Royal Blue (D- II Goldey-Beacom College) battled as both teams sought their first win of the season.

Orange produced a flurry of three-point baskets in the second quarter to pull away en route to a 61-52 win.

The winners improve to 1-2 while Royal remains winless at 0-3.

Royal’s Katie Yoder led all scorers with 24 points (four three-point baskets) and was the lone Royal player to reach double figures.

Three players reached double figures for Orange, led by Abigail Marino’s 15 points.

Sydney Blum and Kyra Quigley had 14 points apiece.

Three ties and five lead changes highlighted the first quarter with Orange holding a narrow 14-13 lead.

Five straight points to open the second quarter pushed their lead to 19-13 before Royal battled back with eight straight points to take a 21-19 lead.

Angelina Zagone capped the run with a three-point basket.

Orange countered with a 15-0 uprising to retake the lead and open up a double digit advantage 34-21, with Blum, Marino and Allie Sillo all knocking down three-point baskets over the course of the run.

Royal’s Janie Cross broke the run with a basket as the period was nearing its end with Orange holding a 34-23 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Orange add four more points to their lead, outscoring royal 17-13 to lead 51-35 heading into the final period.

Zagone’s basket to open the fourth quarter made the score 51-37 but four straight baskets, including two from Marino gave Orange their biggest lead at 59-37.

Royal countered with a 10-0 run to pull within 12, 59-47 with Yoder accounting for seven of the points.

Quigley broke the run with a basket before Royal scored the final five points to trim the final margin to single digits, 61-52, completing a 15-2 run over the final four minutes of the game.
