The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Sky Blue, Purple Haze, and Cyber Pink With a Big Rally Finish Opening Week 2-0

HATBORO, Pa. — Completing night two of opening week Thursday in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League, the unbeaten crowd in the 10-team operation quickly got down to three teams at 2-0 at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

 

Sky Blue, the D2-Holy Family squad took a 61-45 win over Red Fire, the Tigers’ Chestnut Hill winter rival in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference; Cyber Pink,  a draft team assembled by Shannon May and dominated by alums from the former USciences school, launched a 17-0 rally to top draft team Lime Citrus, 66-48; and Purple Haze, the D2 West Chester squad, which won their opener Tuesday 2-0 on a forfeit from Royal Blue, the new summer entry from D2 Goldey-Beacom, romped to a 93-42 win over Orange Citrus, another draft squad.

 

Draft teams, there are four this season, are those assembled from players registering beyond the dominated rosters from D2 and D3 schools, who play in the winter.

 

A big win came from Maroon, which is D3 Arcadia, beating the other draft group Sunburst, 84-44, which is only the second triumph for the bunch following last summer’s initial win since joining the league.

 

Arcadia in the winter is now coached by Jackie Hartzell, who was a longtime coach at USciences prior to the school’s closing and merging with D-1 Saint Joseph’s two seasons ago.

 

Black, also known as D2-Jefferson, came back from its opening upset loss to beat Royal Blue, it’sD2-Goldey-Beacom winter CACC rival, 91-62.

 

There was an explosion of players, five in all, reaching the individual citation of scoring 20 or more points.

 

The night’s top performance came from Purple Haze’s Michelle Kozicki with 31 points, while teammate Anna McTamney scored 28.

 

Hannah Rhoades, on the winning Maroon team, scored 26; and teammate Scarlett Glasser-Nehls scored 20, while Katie Yoder on Royal Blue’s setback scored 24.

 

Looking Ahead

 

The highlight encounter next Tuesday comes on the single 7:45 p.m. game on Court 3, when 2-0 Sky Blue plays 2-0 Purple Haze.

 

The two 6:30 p.m. openers have Royal Blue meeting Orange Citrus on Court 1, both 0-2, so one will get its first win; and Red Fire at 1-1 meets Sunburst at 0-2 on Court 2.

 

The nightcaps on those courts have Black meeting Lime Citrus, both 1-1, on Court 1, while Cyber Pink (2-0) meets Maroon (1-1) on Court 2.

In scoring 31, Michelle Kozicki had four from beyond the arc and was a perfect 5-5 from the line, while Anna McTamney rode to her 28 points, connecting with five treys. Mia Stock added 12.

 

Arielle LePage had 14 for Orange Citrus and Nicole Timko scored 11.

 

Cyber Pink 66, Lime Citrus 48

 

Rylee Derr led the winners with 16 points, Jessica Geno scored 15, and Jennifer Kremp had three triplets on the way to 11 points. The opposition got 18 points, helped by a trio of threes from Annie Aspesi, while Jessica Huber scored 10.

 

Sky Blue (D2 Holy Family) 61, Red Fire (D2 Chestnut Hill) 45

 

Three Tigers scored 10 points for the winners, Skyler Searfoss, who also was 3-3 from the line; Amy Ngo, and Jessica Riepe, while seven others got on the scoreboard.

 

Red Fire’s leader was Julianna DiFebbo with 11 points, Sara Tamoun scored 10, Bridie McCann scored eight and five others got on the scoreboard.

 

Maroon (D3-Arcadia) 84, Sunburst 44

 

Rhoades had six 3-pointers and Glasser-Nehls scored four from deep to aid their big games for the winners, while Sunburst got 12 from Anna Hanson, nine from Vanessa Amsinger, and eight each from Jessica McLaughlin and Shayla Johnson, the latter a perfect 4-4 frokm the line.

 

Black (D2-Jefferson) 91, Royal Blue (D2-Goldey Beacom)

 

In returning to the winning side, ten Rams players scored, led by Sam Yencha with 17 points, Carolyn Sipprell was 4-4 from the line, Ana Pellecchia scored 15 propelled by three 3-pointers, ahead of the seven other teammates.

 

Following Yoder’s 24 for Goldey-Beacom, Julie Kulesza scored 13, and Angelina Zagone scored 10.
