The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Cyber Pink (USciences Alum) Opens a Two-Game Lead Heading to the Break While One-Point Wins Keep Black (Jefferson) and Orange in 4-Way tie in Second
By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
HATBORO, Pa. — Fourth of July and a week off now lies ahead for the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League but most of the ten teams jumped the gun Thursday night, the last in the front phase of the season, and provided plenty of fireworks in the five games played.
The annual wish of David Kessler, now in his 30th season as commissioner, is competitive action, no injuries, work on something that can help when school resumes in the fall and have fun.
He got most of that Thursday.
After winning the unbeaten showdown Tuesday with Purple Haze (D2-West Chester), Cyber Pink, the defending champion who are primarily alums from the former D2-USciences school, got an easier opponent routing new entry Royal Blue, the D2-group from Goldey Beacom, 88-33 to stay unbeaten at 6-0 with three games remaining in the regular season when action resumes Tuesday night, July 9, at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.
Royal Blue (1-5) is alone in ninth place.
In the process, Pink opened a two-game lead and is two wins from clinching the top seed for the playoffs though it could come sooner. Seeds 1-6 get byes into the quarterfinals.
The expanded lead was made possible by a stunning upset by Lime Green (4-2), one of the four draft squads not dominated by a D2 or D3 winter group, beating Purple Haze 68-53 to move to 4-2 and joining the opposition with Orange Citrus, another draft team, and Black (D2-Jefferson) in the latest four-team gridlock all tied for third place.
Two games were decided by a point, one in overtime.
Meeting one of their top D-2 Southern Division rivals in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Sky Blue, the squad from Holy Family, Black won 63-62, dropping the Tigers (3-3) alone in sixth place.
Meanwhile, Orange Citrus needed an extra period to edge Sunburst 66-65 to keep the opposition winless, but the second setback recently by six or less points.
And another upset saw Maroon, the D-3 Arcadia squad, win 80-76 over Red Fire, the D2 CACC member from Chestnut Hill.
That tied the two at 2-4 for eighth place.
In charting the 20 or more points top performances for Thursday, three players each scored
21 points, Taylor Hamm on Cyber Pink to go to 6-0 while on the losing side Holy Family’s Claire Dougherty and Sunburst’s Katelyn Becker matched the total.
Setting the Seeds
In placing the standings and dealing with the logjam if the season ended right now it would be messy, but the remaining games may help sort thing out.
Obviously, Cyber Pink holds first. Within the current four, all are 1-1 against themselves. Lime Green with the win over Purple, the best in the quartet, gets second, followed by Purple, then Orange by beating Black followed by Black.
As mentioned, Sky Blue is sixth. Maroon and Red Fire are tied for seventh, but Maroon’s win produced the seeding advantage with Royal Blue and Sunburst bringing up the rear.
Looking Ahead
After the break, the stretch drive for the seedings begin Tuesday, July 9, with two more nights following to see how many ties will have to be unbroken.
At 6:30 p.m., Lime Citrus (4-2) meets Royal Blue (1-5) on Court 1, while two CACC rivals, Red Fire (2-4) and Black (4-2) meet on Court 2.
In the 7:45 p.m. nightcaps, Purple Haze (4-2) and Maroon (2-4) take over Court 1; Orange Citrus (4-2) and Cyber Pink (4-2) meet on Court 2; and Sky Blue (4-3) plays Sunburst (0-6) on Court 3.
Now here’s Bob with the five-game recaps followed by the scoreboard. The seed section gives a quick look at what’s left followed by each team’s record and results and schedule.

Orange Citrus 66 Sunburst 65 OT
In a battle between two draft teams, Orange Citrus was trailing Sunburst by three points with just 14.6 seconds left when Orange Citrus got their biggest basket of the season as Katie McGrath (Muhlenberg ’26) hit a three-point basket as time was running out to force overtime.
In the extra stanza, Nicole Timko (Carnegie Mellon ’26) hit the game winning three-point basket to give Orange their third straight win, 66-65 over Sunburst.
Orange improves to 4-2 overall and sits in a four-way tie for second place while Sunburst remains winless at 0-6.

Sunburst led by one after three quarters and increased their lead to seven 48-41 early on in the final period.
A quick 6-2 run by Orange made it a one-possession game only to have Sunburst double their lead back to six shortly thereafter, 53-47.
Orange continued to chip away at the lead, closing within two late in the quarter, 59-57 on a basket from Kyra Quigley (Scranton ’23).
A quick basket from Sunburst with 56 seconds left put them ahead by four.

Becker put her team back up by three with a pair of free throws with 14.6 seconds left, setting the scene for McGrath, who sank a three-point basket to tie the game with less than a second remaining, forcing overtime.
In the three-minute overtime period, Sunburst struck first to take a 65-63 lead.
McGrath than sank her three-point basket in the final minute to secure the win.
The team teams had battled to a 28-28 tie by halftime and stayed within four points of each other throughout the third quarter leading up to the exciting fourth quarter and subsequent overtime finish.
Maroon 80 Red Fire 76
In a mild upset Maroon (D-III Arcadia University) pulled away late in the game to earn an 80-76 win over Red Fire (D-II Chestnut Hill College) in the court three game Thursday night.
Maroon earned their second win of the season and improve to 2-4 while Red Fire dropped their second straight game and fall to 2-4.
Both teams sit in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with Maroon now holding the tiebreaker by virtue of the win.
A well-balanced scoring effort from the Maroon squad saw four players reach double figures led by Kylie Meredith’s 19 points. Delaney Finn sank four three-pointers en route to her 16-point effort while Scarlet Glasser-Nehls and Delaney Bell had 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Caraline Herb led the Red squad with 18 points while Sara Tamoun chipped in 17.
Two three pointers from Finn and another from Hannah Rhodes helped stake Maroon to a 22-15 lead after the first period.
After Maroon expanded their lead to ten, 25-15, Red started to heat up, producing a 10-1 run to pull within one 26-25. Avery White’s two baskets and Tamoun’s four points fueled the run.
The lead oscillated between one and three points until Jessica Mangoni’s basket gave Red a 33-32 lead late in the period.
Maroon evened the score by halftime at 35-35.
The two teams combined for 45 points in the third quarter as Red struck first on a Bri Rider basket and later pulled ahead by six on an Anaisah Malone layup 55-49 before Maroon closed out the quarter with a 7-4 run to cut Red’s lead to 59-56.

Another basket from Tamoun put Red ahead 70-66 with 3:06 remaining.
Meredith than started a 9-0 run for Maroon with four straight points as the D-III squad took a 75-70 lead with a minute to go in the game.
Three free throws from Herb cut the lead to two but that would be as close as the Red squad would come as Maroon pulled away with the 80-76 win.
