The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Sky Blue Upsets Cyber Pink Ruining Unbeaten Record; Title Game to Live Stream on SFBN YouTube Channel 3rd Straight Year

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. – A stunning upset Thursday night in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League saw Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, ruin the perfect record of Cyber Pink with a narrow 71-67 victory at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

However, in the short run, there were no immediate effects in the standings since Pink (7-1) had already clinched the top seed in the playoffs, which begin with two play-in games next Thursday on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.

Sky Blue (5-3) was unable to advance since the three-team deadlock above the Tigers in second place remained with each winning to move within a game of Pink.

Black (6-2), also known as D2-Jefferson in the winter, routed Sunburst 70-35, the opposition staying winless at 0-7; Lime Green (6-2), one of the draft teams with rosters not dominated by any of the ten schools in the league who play in the winter, beat Orange Citrus 56-48, the opposition another draft team, dropping to 4-4; and Purple Haze (6-2), also known as D2-West  Chester, taking a 76-67 win over Red  Fire (2-6), also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, which fell to 1-6.

Black and Purple Haze meet in a regular season final Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m., which will drop one of the two out of the second-place tie, while Lime Citrus meets Sky Blue at 7:45 p.m. on Court 2.

Cyber Pink clinched the top seed Tuesday night, having beaten any of the three squads who could tie for first at the finish. Pink, additionally, will be a strong prohibitive favorite Tuesday night playing winless Sunburst (0-7) at 7:45 p.m. on Court 3.

Sky Blue with a win over Lime Citrus could move up from fifth.

But a loss could drop them to sixth if Orange Citrus beats Maroon (3-5), also known as D3-Arcadia, which gained a 76-37 win over Royal Blue (1-7), also known as D2-Goldey Beacom.

If Maroon beats Orange Citrus Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1, the squad will own a tiebreak with the opposition and move to the sixth seed, the final slot still up for grabs for a bye into the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, July 23.

As for players with 20 or more points, Jessica Huber nailed six from deep on the way to 29 points for the winning Lime Citrus squad; Taylor Hamm scored 24 for Cyber Pink in their setback; Emma Kuczynski scored 20 for the winning Black squad; and Michelle Kozicki scored 21 for the triumphant Purple Haze group.

Meanwhile, a little housekeeping is to note that Cyber Pink is a fifth draft team.

We had been calling them an alumni group, which they are, but not dominated by the former USciences representatives, which as a school a year ago merged with Division I Saint Joseph’s.

Shannon May, an alum from the Devils, organized the squad, so an assumption was made since she did assemble a previous USP alumni group. There are several former players on other teams this summer.

Title Game to Be Streamed Again on YouTube

For the third straight summer, Ari Bluestein’s SFBNTV will live stream the Philly Summer League’s title game, which will air on the organization’s YouTube channel SFBNTV.com on Thursday, August 1, at 7 p.m.

A link will post here after the semifinals, which will be on Court 1 on Thursday, August 1.

Looking Ahead

Though all of this coming Tuesday’s games were just mentioned above, here is a repeat to find them easier in their usual narrative.

In the early games at 6:30 p.m., Orange Citrus (4-4) meets Maroon (3-5) on Court 1, a bye spot to the quarterfinals at stake to the outcome. While the other five teams have already qualified for byes, seed order is still in play.

On Court 2, Black (6-2) meets Purple Haze (6-2), the winner having a shot at second or first, the latter possible should the unforeseen occur to Pink.

In the 7:45 p.m. games, Royal Blue (1-7) on Court 1 meets Red Fire (2–6), both teams already set for first round play, though seeds are still undetermined.

On Court 2, Sky Blue (5-3) meets Lime Citrus (6-2), a game also affecting the three-way tie existing as of the moment. And on Court 3, the very top in Cyber Pink (7-1) meets the lowest in Suburst (0-8), also a draft team.

Setting the Seeds

Things are simplified at the moment, but some tie-breaking, which might be easily determined, may be in order following Tuesday’s games.

As mentioned, Cyber Pink, having previously built a two-game lead, clinched the top spot and holds all head-to-head tiebreakers.

In the three-way for second, the records within the group against each other has Black 1-0 with a win over Lime Citrus, which is 1-1 having beaten Purple Haze, which is 0-1 with the Black game ahead Tuesday.

Thus, they for now fill in at seeds 2, 3, 4, respectively.

But if Sky Blue Beats Lime, both will tie for second and also be joined by the winner of Black and Purple Haze.

Meanwhile, for now, there are no ties below.

Sky Blue is fifth, Orange Citrus is sixth, Maroon is seventh, Red Fire is eighth, Royal Blue is ninth, and Sunburst is 10th.

Here’s Bob with the recaps, followed by the scoreboard.

Recaps

Sky Blue 71 Cyber Pink 67

Sky Blue (DII- Holy Family University) held off a huge fourth quarter rally to hand Cyber Pink (alumni Team1) their first loss of the season, 71-67 in the early game on court one Thursday night.

Pink, which had already clinched the top seed for the upcoming playoffs with a win this past Tuesday, falls to 7-1.

Sky improves to 5-3 and sits alone in fifth place.

Jessica Riepe led Sky with 18 points, making six three-point baskets.  Claire Dougherty added 17 points.

Pink’s Taylor Hamm (USciences ’22) led all scorers with 24 points. Kaitlyn Carter (Chestnut Hill’24) and Rylee Derr (Kutztown ’22) added 11 and ten points, respectively.

Sky had built a 14-point lead at halftime and still led by 12, at 59-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

Derr and Riepe exchanged three-point baskets to open the fourth quarter before a traditional three-point play from Carter began the Pink rally in earnest.

Carter’s and-one started a 9-0 run for Pink. She followed with another basket and Kate Connelly (Drexel ’23) added two buckets to pull Pink within three points 62-59 with 4:42 left.

The two teams exchanged baskets twice with Jessica Genco (Northeastern ’19) scoring twice and Amy Ngo scoring twice for Sky.

Hamm’s basket with 1:10 left brought Pink within one 66-65.

Sky then took to the foul line in the final minute making five of six in the final 54 seconds to seal the win.

Hamm scored her final points with just over a second left to make the final 71-67.

Hamm scored 11of her 24 points I the third quarter, helping Pink cut Sky’s 14-point halftime lead to seven before Sky built it back up to 12, setting the stage for the final ten minutes of action.

Lime Citrus 56 Orange Citrus 48

Lime Citrus (alumni team 2) held off a rally from Orange Citrus (draft team) to stay tied for second place in the league standings with a 56-48 win on court three.

Lime is now 6-2 and sits in a three-way tie for second place with Purple Haze and Black who kept pace with wins tonight.  Orange falls to 4-4 and sits in sixth place.

Jess Huber (USciences ’21) led all scorers with 29 points, making seven three-point baskets on the night. Shira Newman (Millersville ’13) added 11 points and all six players who dressed for Lime scored on the night.

Orange was led by Katie McGrath’s (Muhlenberg ’26) 17 points while Kyra Quigley (Scranton ’23) chipped in eight.

Huber scored 16 of her 29 points in the first quarter as Lime jumped out to a 21-9 lead and built a 16-point lead 29-13 before Orange cut the advantage down to 11, scoring the final five points of the half, 29-18.

Orange pulled within five with a 9-3 run to open the third quarter, 32-27, before Lime doubled the margin back to ten 41-31 heading into the final period.

The two teams exchanged three-point baskets to start the period.

Nicole Timko (Carnegie Mellon ’26) and Quigley followed with back-to-back baskets to pull Orange within six, 44-38.

Timko added another basket with a little over four minutes left and McGrath sank a three ball to make it a one-possession game 49-46.

Lime closed the game out with a flurry of free throws in the final two minutes to secure the 56-48 win.

Purple Haze 76 Red Fire 67

Purple Haze (D-II West Chester University) used a 29-point second quarter to turn a two-point game into as blowout as they cruised to a 76-67 win over Red fire (D-II Chestnut Hill College).

Purple keeps pace with Lime Citrus and Black with the win, sitting in a three-way tie for second place with a 6-2 record.

Red sits in eighth place with a 2-6 record.

Michelle Kozicki led Purple with 21 points while Anna McTamney and Rachel Conran added 17 and 15 points apiece.

Bridie McCann led three players in double figures for Red, scoring 16 points.  Bri Rider and Avery White added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Leading by two, 19-17 after one period, Purple turned up the offense, outscoring Red 29-10 in the second quarter to take a 48-27 at the half.

Rider led a third quarter comeback attempt by Red with eight points in the period as Red cut the lead to 11, 55-44 with a 17-7 run in the first five minutes.

Purple countered with an 11-2 run to close out the quarter up 20, 66-46.

Red whittled away at the lead in the fourth quarter but could not get the deficit under ten until the final seconds as Purple closed out the game, 76-67.

Black 70 Sunburst 35

Black (D-II Jefferson University) won their fourth straight game to remain in contention for the #2 seed in the upcoming league playoffs, defeating Sunburst 70-35.

With the win, black improves to 6-2 and is still in a tie for second place with Lime Citrus and Purple Haze (also victors tonight). Sunburst falls to 0-8.

Emma Kuczynski led Black with 20 points while Cayleigh Sterling chipped in 19.  Brianna Mastriano led Sunburst with ten points while Jess Mastriano chipped in nine points.

Sunburst trailed by five after the first quarter and pulled within three points, 18-15 when Black unloaded a 12-0 run to take a 30-15 lead en route to a 35-21 advantage at the half.

Black’s defense held Sunburst to just nine points in the third quarter and five in the fourth as their offense produced 35 second half points enabling them to pull away for the win.

Sterling had 14 of her 19 points in the final two quarters while Kuczynski had eight third quarter points.

Maroon 76 Royal Blue 37

Maroon (D-III Arcadia University) exploded for 28 first quarter points and cruised to a 76-37 win over Royal blue (D-II Goldey-Beacom College).

With the win, Maroon improves to 3-5 overall and sits in seventh place.  They still have a chance at receiving a first round bye for the upcoming playoffs with a win next week against Orange Citrus who sits in sixth with a 4-4 record. Royal Blue drops to 1-7 and sits in ninth place.

Julie Kulesza (Bucknell ’24) led Royal Blue with 11 points while Julie McCarron chipped in eight.

Maroon placed three players in double figures with Hannah Rhodes leading the way with 19 points. Scarlett Glasser-Nehls and Taylor Koenig added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Nine different Maroon players scored in a dominant first quarter as they took a 28-9 lead and never looked back. The team increased their lead to 25 by halftime 51-26.

Maroon held Royal to just 11 points in the final 20 minutes of action, taking a 63-30 lead after three quarters and outscored Royal 10-7 in the final period.
