The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Cyber Pink (Alums) Looks for Title Repeat and Revenge Win Facing Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family in Championship Showdown

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. – A promising showdown looms ahead Thursday night in the title game of the 10-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League between defending champion and top seed Cyber Pink (10-1), a squad built on talented area alumni, and third seed Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family (8-3), which handed Pink their sole loss on the next to the final night of the nine-game regular season.

Tipoff time is 7 p.m. (admission free) on Court 1 of Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, 2950 Turnpike Drive near the intersection of Davisville and Byberry Roads.

There’s also a reasonably-priced snack bar.

For the third straight year, the contest will stream on Ari Bluestein’s SFBN network’s YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/live/ce0Fn1em9Wg?feature=shared with Drexel’s Zach Feinberg doing play by play and the Dragons’ Greg Starks serving as color analyst.

Ironically off our individual nightly highlight performance shoutouts of 20 or more points (see below), the two best of the best on the chart are going against each other in Pink’s Taylor Hamm, a 2022 grad of former power D2-USciences, who lit up the scoreboard for 37 points on June 18, the second week of the season, edging by one point going into Thursday night’s title game, Holy Family junior Claire Dougherty, who collected 36 on opening night a week earlier.

Hamm is a grad of North Penn High before enrolling at USP, which was a local D2 powerhouse in the Southern Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) before shutting down two seasons ago in a school merger with D1-Saint Joseph’s.

The Philly League’s Sky Blue and Black/D2-Jefferson are also CACC ongoing powers in the winter – Jefferson coached by Tom Shirley, who is nearing his 900th career victory, while Bernadette Laukitis returned to her alma mater after the summer of 2019 when the Tigers won their other league crown.

Laukaitis had been on the staff at Penn following Mike McLaughlin upon his hire and after he had built the school in Northeast Philly into a force.

Dougherty is from Lake-Lehman High, which is upstate in Wilkes-Barre.

Ironically, both Hamm and Dougherty got their totals against seventh seed Maroon/D3-Arcadia, which in the winter is coached by Jackie Hartzell, who had a long stint at USciences prior to its closure.

Hamm hit the performance chart three other times while Sky Blue’s Dougherty did so two other times.

Rylee Derr, a 2022 grad of Kutztown, did so twice from Pink, while Jessica Riepe, an incoming senior at Holy Family, also did so twice.

Paths to the Title Round

Pink, which was previously loaded with USP stars, was assembled by Shannon May, a 2021 alum of the Devils out of Archbishop Wood.

For most of the summer Pink was unstoppable going 7-0 for an early wrap up of the top seed, winning each game by double digits, until running into a peaking Sky Blue, which got off to a mediocre 3-3 start and holding sixth place before the league took its one-week holiday break over July 4th.

The third loss on June 27th ahead of the pause was a 63-62 narrow loss to winter rival Black, which also struggled at the outset until taking second place outright at 7-2.

Sky Blue was also 3-0 after the break stunning Pink 71-67 (Bob has that game repeated below with the rosters) and routing Lime Citrus to finish in a three-way tie for third place.

In breaking the deadlock, with each team 1-1 against each other making the first procedure moot, the win over Pink landed Sky Blue the third seed besides being one of the top six teams with byes to the quarterfinals.

Pink, with a scare playing on a short roster that night, won its playoff quarterfinals opener edging Royal Blue 69-66 after the D2-Goldey-Beacom squad, new to the summer league, reversed the tables in the opening round on Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill, which had won 57-49 against its CACC rival on the final night of the regular season 48 hours earlier.

Sky Blue in its playoff opener stayed hot winning 63-42 over sixth-seed Orange Citrus.

In the semifinals, Pink caught a break when fifth-seeded Purple Haze/D2-West Chester, a mild payback upset 69-64 winner in the quarterfinals over four-seed Lime Citrus, was forced to forfeit 2-0 due to vacations and illness reducing the roster to below the minimum number required.

It was just the second forfeit of the season and first time in a semifinals.

By the way the Pink roster has a D-1 alum in 2023 Drexel grad Kate Connolly out of Souderton High.

Sky Blue in an exciting game played the revenge card on Black, winning the semifinal 73-70.

League Background

Serving as commissioner now in his 30th season is David Kessler dating back to when he and the league were all under the Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation.

Usually, summer play has translated into winter success and while landslides came out of different talent levels in matchups in 2024, there were plenty of competitive contests.

For a long time D1 players were a major part of the summer competition though only two undergrads from the same school under NCAA rules are allowed on the same squad though they could be joined by grads and, until recently, incoming freshmen.

Back in the day such notables as Dawn Staley, Kelly Greenberg, Denise Dillon, Katie Kuester, Natasha Cloud, among a slew of others, were regulars.

Whole units from D2 and 3 are allowed, however, and their winter coaches are allowed on site as observers, but they are not permitted to take part on the sidelines.

All teams are self-coached this summer though the winter mentors have been regularly attending on the scene.

Six dominate units with mixture of elsewhere are: D2: CACC-South (4) Black/Jefferson; Red Fire/Chestnut Hill; Sky Blue/Holy Family; Royal Blue/Goldey-Beacom; PSAC (1) Purple Haze/West Chester; D3 91) Maroon/Arcadia Self-Assembled (1): Cyber Pink (Alums). Draft squads from other registered players – Lime Citrus, Orange Citrus, Sunburst.

Now here’s Bob with the recap of the regular season game and Thursday’s rosters followed by the scoreboard.

Prior Meeting

Sky Blue 71 Cyber Pink 67

Sky Blue (DII- Holy Family University) held off a huge fourth quarter rally to hand Cyber Pink (alumni Team1) their first loss of the season, 71-67 in the early game on court one Thursday night.

Pink, which had already clinched the top seed for the upcoming playoffs with a win this past Tuesday, falls to 7-1.

Sky improves to 5-3 and sits alone in fifth place.

Jessica Riepe led Sky with 18 points, making six three-point baskets.  Claire Dougherty added 17 points.

Pink’s Taylor Hamm (USciences ’22) led all scorers with 24 points. Kaitlyn Carter (Chestnut Hill’24) and Rylee Derr (Kutztown ’22) added 11 and ten points, respectively.

Sky had built a 14-point lead at halftime and still led by 12, at 59-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

Derr and Riepe exchanged three-point baskets to open the fourth quarter before a traditional three-point play from Carter began the Pink rally in earnest.

Carter’s and-one started a 9-0 run for Pink. She followed with another basket and Kate Connelly (Drexel ’23) added two buckets to pull Pink within three points 62-59 with 4:42 left.

The two teams exchanged baskets twice with Jessica Genco (Northeastern ’19) scoring twice and Amy Ngo scoring twice for Sky.

Hamm’s basket with 1:10 left brought Pink within one 66-65.

Sky then took to the foul line in the final minute making five of six in the final 54 seconds to seal the win.

Hamm scored her final points with just over a second left to make the final 71-67.

Hamm scored 11of her 24 points I the third quarter, helping Pink cut Sky’s 14-point halftime lead to seven before Sky built it back up to 12, setting the stage for the final ten minutes of action.
