The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Looming Competitive Quarterfinal Round for Tuesday Night Previewed

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. – With the field set, Tuesday night’s quarterfinals in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League promise to be competitive and like recent seasons lower seeds in the four games in the two doubleheaders on Courts 1 and 2 pulling upsets are not out of the question.

Action begins at 6:30 p.m. at Kelly Bolish Gym home of the AAU Renegades on 2950 Turnpike Drive, which is near the intersection of Davisville and Byberry Roads. Admission is free and there is a reasonably priced snack bar.

The two nightcaps will tip at 7:45 p.m.

Thursday night’s semifinals are at the same times but only on Court 1 with highest surviving seed meeting the lowest first followed by the other two winners from the quarterfinals.

The title game will then be a week later on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. on Court 1 and for the third straight year that game will be air on the YouTube channel of Ari Bluestein’s SFBN network with Drexel’s Zach Feinberg doing the play call.

The Openers

Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1, Cyber Pink (8-1), the top seed, will meet 9th-seeded Royal Blue/D2-Goldey-Beacom (2-8), which pulled an upset of sorts in the opening round getting revenge on 8th-seed Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill just two days after Red Fire gained the upper number beating Red Fire on the final night of the regular season.

Ironically during the regular season, the quarterfinal opponents all met in the last week of June on either Tuesday or Thursday before the league took a pause for a week across the July 4th holiday.

Cyber Pink won its first meeting with Royal Blue easily 88-33 and was rolling toward an unbeaten record until the then 7-0 squad which had clinched the top seed was upset by Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family but recovered to beat winless Sunburst in its final game.

Royal Blue, which was new to the 10-team league as a unit, won its only game topping Sunburst before topping Red Fire, which in the winter both are in the Southern Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) as is Black and Sky Blue.

Purple Haze/D2-West Chester is in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Maroon/D3-Arcadia plays in the MAC Freedom Conference.

The teams not dominated by winter rosters were created in May with other players registered and placed though there are mini groups requesting to be together reuniting from high school or for other reasons.

There is a healthy dose of alums and two D-1 grads in La Salle’s Molly Masciantonio whose eligibility ended after this past season and Drexel’s Kate Connelly, who finished a year earlier.

The other game at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2 matches 6th-seed Orange Citrus (5-4) against 3-seed Sky Blue/D2-Holly Family (6-3) looking to avenge a narrow 49-43 loss back in June.

Orange Citrus was in the middle of a run back then but slipped to the sixth seed down the stretch with losses to Cyber Pink and Lime Citrus.

After that loss and a 63-62 loss to winter rival Black, Sky Blue went on a run the rest of the way upsetting Cyber Pink and beating Lime Citrus to gain a three-way tie for third and take the tie-breaking third seed with the best win off beating the league’s number one team.

The Night Caps

At 7:45 p.m. on Court 1, 2-seed Black/D2-Jefferson (7-2) meets 7-seed Maroon/D3-Arcadia (4-6) which had its best summer in the league and on Thursday made good its upper seed in the other opening round game by beating Sunburst.

In the winter, Arcadia is coached by Jackie Hartzell, who was the successful long-time coach of D2-USciences until the school closed several years ago merging with D-1 Saint Joseph’s.

In their June meeting Black won easily over Maroon 83-57.

Black has been one of the stronger teams in both seasons but struggled at the outset in June. However, after the loss to Orange Citrus, the other was to Cyber Pink, the team won five straight and beat Purple Haze at the finish to take sole possession of second place.

The 7:45 p.m. game on Court 2 has 4th-seed Lime Citrus (6-3) meeting 5th-seed Purple Haze (6-3). Both were part of the three-way tie but after Black took the first tie-break, all three were 1-1 against each other – the actual first attempt – Lime gained the advantage off its 68-53 win over Purple Haze in June.

Lime fell to Sky Blue on the final night, costing it a tie with Black though having lost to Black would have slotted them to the third seed.

Purple Haze started real strong but struggled down the stretch.

To set you up further here are Bob’s recaps from the earlier meetings and the roster sets for each meeting in the quarterfinals followed by the season scoreboard.

Quarterfinal Past Opponents Recaps
