The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Cyber Pink and Black/D2-Jefferson Finish 1-2 Alone Heading to Playoffs While Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family Storms to Third Out of a Tie-Break

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Surging teams at the top of the standings stood out Tuesday in the final night of the regular season of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Cyber Pink bounced back from its sole loss Tuesday to finish 8-1 alone at the top of the nine-game schedule in the 10-team league while Black/D2-Jefferson shook off early season struggles to finish alone in second while Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family with a powerful two-game finish, including the sole win over Pink, came from back in the pack to land the third seed for the playoffs that being here Thursday night with two out-bracket games this Tuesday night and continuing with quarterfinal play Tuesday.

The semifinals will be played Thursday and then a week later on August 1, the two survivors will meet for the Philly Summer League title.

Cyber Pink, which clinched the top seed two games ago, got the luxury of playing winless Sunburst 75-48, the opponent will be the 10th seed Thursday ast 6:30 p.m. on Court 1.

A year ago, the Maroon color designated team of the time was winless but pulled an upset in the opening round.

Sunburst will meet seventh seed Maroon/D3-Arcadia (3-6), the new color designated this season and the seventh seed, after missing a chance to to gain a bye to the quarterfinals by losing to Orange Citrus 76-57, which will be the sixth seed finishing at 5-4 to take the last available bye slot toy the quarterfinals.

Maroon tied with Red Fire but owns the head-to-head win over Red Fire, achieved on Thursday last week, to finish seventh.

Thursday’s other play-in game will match eighth seed Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill (2-6) meeting ninth seed Royal Blue/D2-Goldey Beacom (1-8) meeting a second straight night after Red Fire won on Tuesday 57-49 in a tightly contested game.

Black/Jefferson (7-2) with some extra help to its now five-game win streak broke out of the three-way for second going into the night with a head-to-head 75-48 rout of Purple Haze/D2-West Chester (6-3) that alone ensured a two seed for the playoffs.

But then a bonus came with Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family (6-3) cruising 93-63 over Lime Citrus (6-3) allowing Jefferson sole possession of the runnerup slot.

It also created a new three-way tie at third and with back-to-back wins over Pink and Lime Citrus.

Within themselves, the first tie breaker procedure, all three teams were 1-1, meaning best win would be next to bust up the logjam.

Sky Blue beating Pink achieved that to be seeded third.

That left head-to-head for the two remaining teams and Lime Citrus owned the win over Purple Haze for fourth, the opposition relegated to fifth.

Purple Haze won its first four games, starting in mid-June but then settled into around the .400 mark the rest of the way.

There was another cluster of players reaching 20 points or better in the five games.

Orange’s win was highlighted by 28 points from Nicole Timko, helped by three makes from deep, while former USciences star Jess Huber, also connecting three long lines, scored 23 for Lime Citrus in the team’s defeat.

Anna McTammney scored 21for Purple Haze in the setback to Jefferson, while 20 points each were collected by Jessica Riepe, including four 3-pointers, for Sky Blue in the win, while Red Fire’s Avery White helped the win with 20 points.

Early Playoff Preview

In Thursday night’s Red Fire/Royal Blue game, the season meeting for the 8-9 teams has been addressed leaving Royal Blue looking for revenge 48 hours later.

In the 7-10 game, Maroon easily beat Sunburst 84-44 the second night of the season.

The playoff format here calls for re-seeding each round so in the quarterfinals next Tuesday Pink will meet the lowest surviving seed as the top team at 6:45 p.m. on Court 1, while Black will meet the other survivor on Court 2 at 7:45 p.m.

During the season, Pink beat Maroon 67-44; less than 24 hours ago beat Sunburst as reported 69-45. The frontrunners also beat Red Fire 72-58 and Royal Blue 91-62.

Black beat Maroon 83-57, romped over Sunburst 70-35, topped Red Fire 77-61, and bested Royal Blue 91-62.

Tuesday’s other quarterfinals has three-seed Sky Blue meeting six-seed Orange Citrus at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2 looking for revenge off a 49-43 loss on that was an upset at the time on June 25th and before a one-point loss to Black two nights later before the holiday break.

The other quarterfinal, which is at 7:45 p.m. on Court 2 has four seed Lime Green meeting five-seed Purple Haze looking for a sweep after its earlier 68-53 win on June 27.

We’ll bring back Bob’s detail of those games ahead of Tuesday next week when we know Cyber Pink’s and Jefferson’s actual opponents for the quarterfinals.

Now here’s Bob with the detail recaps followed by the scoreboard.
