The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Playoffs Open as 7th-Seed Maroon/D3 Arcadia and 9th-Seed Royal Blue/D2-Goldey Beacom Fight Way to Complete Quarterfinals Field

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. – With the two survivors, one through a mild upset, advancing Thursday night in first round action as the playoffs got under way in the Philadelphia/Suburban women’s summer league at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, the quarterfinals are now completely set for Tuesday night.

Records in this report will reflect playoff games now and the rest of the way but will not be changed for the final standings. They will also update in the team-by-team section.

In Thursday’s opener, Maroon/D3-Arcadia (4-6) held serve as the seventh seed and beat 10th and last seed Sunburst 66-57 and thus no flipping or re-seeding necessary as Maroon will meet second-seed Black/D2-Jefferson (7-2) in Court 1’s second game on Tuesday night at 7:45 pm.

Sunburst (0-10) was unable to replicate the Maroon of a year ago, which gained its sole win in the play-in round.

In the nightcap, just 48 hours after eighth-seed Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill (3-7) gained its slot by beating Royal Blue/D22-Goldey-Beacom, the opposition (2-8) gained revenge with a 55-50 victory and will have the dubious distinction of playing top seed Cyber Pink at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1.

In a rarity off what had occurred across the summer, no one scored 20 or more points from the four teams playing Thursday.

Everything else was already set and the other quarterfinal games have third-seed Sky Blue/D2 Holy Family (6-3) meeting sixth-seed Orange Citrus (5-4) at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2 while the nightcap on that court will have fourth-seed Lime Citrus (6-3) meeting fifth-seed Purple Haze/D2-West Chester (6-3) at 7:45 p.m.

The semifinals with the highest surviving seed meeting the lowest surviving team and the other two winners meeting in the other game will tip at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. next Thursday.

Then a week later the two finalists will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, on Court 1, the championship for the third straight year to air on SFBN’s YouTube channel, the link provided by chief SFBN executive Ari Bluestein once the semifinal winners emerge.

Drexel’s Zach Feinberg will be doing the play-by-play.

Since we have several days until the quarterfinals get under way, to avoid confusion, this report is detailing with the results and the quarterfinals pairings setup and then on Monday or by Tuesday morning the quarterfinals preview will post.

Also to clarify how the scoreboard will look in this post and the rest of the way, some already mentioned, within what was the final standings Tuesday, the won-loss records, as well as points for and against, will stay as they were, though a footnote through the places in the standings will be Q for teams into the quarterfinals, then converted to S for the semi finalists, F for the finalists, and C for the champion.

We’ll still log the individual 20 or more points but include a notation for the achievement in whatever playoff round it was made.

The seed tracker stays as it evolved on the final night.

But the team-by-team will update records with notation once playoff action is included as it is now for the four teams who played Thursday and the playoff results and winners’ next games will be part of the log.

A little note, the WNBA, which is about to sign a two-billion dollar broadcast deal, is now on break for the Olympics, which won’t be under way with the USA women’s team in Paris until July 26th.

The All-Star game from Phoenix is Saturday night at 8:30 p.m., EDT on ABC/ESPN app and ESPN will air the skills and 3-point challenges Friday night (tonight July 19) beginning 9 p.m.

Admission is free to these games here at 2950 Turnpike Drive near the Davisville and Byberry Road intersection along the turnpike and there is a snack bar.

So far only one forfeit this season happened, that on opening night, a tribute to the players, especially those in the early games that must deal with rush hour traffic, some coming a distance, to arrive for the 6:30 p.m. tips.

There is a 15-minute grace period for those games to get a playable squad on the court.

As we now go deeper into the matchups it should be noted that in recent seasons after things were static most of the summer — the very good squads which established themselves fighting at the top — once the postseason began, predictions for each round did not hold up in their entirety.

All that said, here’s Bob with two recaps, followed by the scoreboard, and the preview after the weekend will bring the recaps from each earlier meeting along with team rosters for each game.

Recaps

#7 Maroon 66 #10 Sunburst 57

Seventh seed Maroon (D-III Arcadia University) held off a late surge from #10 Sunburst (draft team 2) to earn a 66-57 win Thursday night and advance to the quarterfinal round next week.

Maroon advances to the quarterfinal round on Tuesday and will face #2 seed Black. (D-II Jefferson University.

Four players reached double figures to pace the Maroon squad, led by Scarlett Glasser-Nehls’ 16 points.  Hannah Rhodes added 13 points while Delaney Bell and Delaney Finn scored 12 and 11 points respectively.

Shayla Johnson (Rowan ’25) led Sunburst with 14 points. Katelyn Becker (Swarthmore’25), Vanessa Amsinger (Swarthmore’25) and Tabby DeVries (Houghton ’27) scored eight points apiece.

The first five minutes of the contest saw four lead changes with Sunburst holding a slim lead.

Maroon closed out the quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 17-10 lead.

Taylor Koenig and Rhodes extended the run to open the second quarter as Maroon took a double-digit lead 21-10.

Still leading by seven, Maroon went on a 9-0 run to take a 32-16 lead midway through the period and still led 37-23 at halftime.

Sunburst started to chip away at the lead in the third quarter, using a 20-7 run to cut the Maroon lead to five 48-43.

Miranda Cantor (Marywood,’28) started the run with a free throw followed by a three-point basket with DeVries cutting an 18-point lead to ten 41-31.

Johnson’s layup with about three minutes left shaved the deficit to single digits 46-37.

Sunburst closed the run with six straight points to close within five at 48-43.

Two free throws from Mara Weaver to open the fourth quarter increased Maroon’s lead to ten 55-45.

Sunburst again closed within five 55-50 but a 7-2 run by Maroon with Glasser-Nehls scoring five of the seven points pumped the lead back to ten 62-52.

Cantor added a three pointer to make the score 62-55 but that would be as close as Sunburst would come.

Bell added two more baskets to give Maroon their final points as they finished with a nine-point win.

#9 Royal Blue 55 #8 Red Fire 50

Ninth seed Royal Blue (D-II Goldey-Beacom College) scored a mild upset in the late first round playoff game Thursday night, defeating #8 seed Red Fire (D-II Chestnut Hill College), 55-50.

Royal will advance to the quarterfinal and will play top seed Cyber Pink next Tuesday night.

Madelynn Bernhardt (College of New Jersey ’28) led Royal with 18 points.

Julie Kulesza added 11 points.

Bridie McCann led Red with 12 points while Tikiya Miller added eight and Bri Rider seven points respectively.

There was at least one lead change in each of the four quarters with Royal taking the lead from Red midway through the first quarter and leading by as many as nine, 17-8.

Royal still led by nine in the second quarter when Red exploded with 11 straight points to retake the lead 22-20.

Angela Sanders scored the first six points of the run with Miller, rider and Kathryn Randa (Kutztown ’28) following with baskets.

Royal quickly retook the lead following a basket by Bernardt and led 27-25 at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, Royal increased their lead to 35-27 before Red ran off another 11-0 run to close out the quarter with a 38-35 lead.

Four different players scored for Red during the run.

Two baskets from Katie Yoder to open the fourth quarter gave her team the lead again 39-38.

Royal’s lead oscillated between one and five points over the next four minutes before baskets from Yoder and Bernhardt put Royal ahead by eight 50-42 midway through the final period.

A basket from Miller and two from McCann cut the Royal lead to two 50-48 with 3:21left.

Royal finished the game with a 5-2 run to earn the five-point win.
