The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Semifinals Preview as Top-Seed Pink meets Five-Seed Purple Haze and Two-Seed Black Meets Third-Seed Sky Blue

HATBORO, Pa. – Four will become two in semifinals doubleheader action at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 Thursday night as the winnowing continues toward the August 1 championship in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades on 2950 Turnpike Drive.

Admission is free and there’s a reasonably priced snack bar.

Top-seed Pink (9-1) following a near-stunning upset loss to nine-seed Royal Blue/D2-Goldey Beacom in Tuesday’s quarterfinals, meets fifth-seeded Purple Haze/D2-West Chester (7-3), a mild upset survivor advancing over four-seed Lime Citrus with a payback, to open the two games.

Then second-seed Black/D2-Jefferson (8-2) clashes with third-seeded Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family (7-3) at 7:45 p.m. after both easily won the other two games on Tuesday respectfully ousting seven-seed Maroon/D3-Arcadia and six-seed Orange Citrus, another revenge win.

The winners then head for next Thursday’s title game at 7 p.m. on Court 1 which for the third straight season will stream/air on the YouTube channel of Ari Bluestein’s SFBN network. Drexel’s Zach Feinberg will be on the play-by-play.

The precise link will post here in advance of the championship.

In the regular season the last week of June before a two-night stand down for the July 4th holiday, Pink, a squad of graduated players put together on their own ahead of draft night in May to set up the 10-team league this summer, knocked off Purple Haze to become the last group still unbeaten and go on to clinch the top seed ahead of an upset by Sky Blue on night eight on the nine-game schedule.

But Black and Sky Blue that same week, who meet in the winter in the South Division of the Central Atlantic College Conference (CACC), battled all the the way until the Black eked out a 63-62 win.

Both have been hot since then, Sky Blue extremely so upsetting Pink and taking down Lime Citrus in its last two games to finish in a three-way tie for third place.

 After all three were 1-1 within the group Sky Blue was able to use the win over Pink to grab the third seed.

The records here include the playoffs but just the regular season results are listed in the standings with notations on how far each team advanced when the playoffs began a week ago.

Matchup Sets Earlier Meeting Recaps

Cyber Pink 74 Purple Haze 55

Rylee Derr scored 30 points as Cyber Pink (alumni team) won the battle of the unbeatens, defeating Purple Haze (D-II West Chester) 74-55 in the late game on court one at Kelly Bolish gym.

Pink improves to 5-0 on the season and is the sole remaining unbeaten team in the league while Purple suffers their first loss of the season and drops to second place with a 4-1 record.

Derr (Kutztown ’22) scored 12 of her points in the first quarter and added eight in Pink’s dominant third quarter enroute to her highest point total of the season thus far.

 Derr connected on seven three-point baskets. Taylor Hamm (USciences) added 16 points while Jenifer Kremp (Usciences’22) chipped in 10 points.

Michelle Kozicki led Purple with 16 points while Anna McTamney and Rachel Conran chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively.

Pink opened up an eight-point lead after the first quarter and still led by eight 27-21 in the second when Purple went on a 9-0 run with three points baskets from Mia Stock (DeSales’27) McTamney and Conran to take their first lead of the game at 30-27.

Pink followed with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 35-32.

Purple closed within one twice before Kate Connolly (Drexel’23) sank a three-point basket in the final seconds of the quarter to give Pink a 40-36 lead at halftime.

Derr scored all of her third quarter points early in the period as Pink opened the quarter with a 12-2 run to take a double-digit lead 52-38, putting Pink firmly in control as they cruised to a 61-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Pink expanded their lead in the first seven minutes of the quarter, taking a 74-52 lead following Derr’s final basket of the game.

McTamney scored the final three points of the gam to make the final margin 19 at 74-55.

Black 63 Sky Blue 62

In a battle between two of the four teams deadlocked in a four-way tie for third place in the league standings and winter rivals Black (D-II Jefferson University) held off Sky Blue (D-II Holy Family University 63-62 in the early game at Kelly Bolish Gym.

Black remains in a four-way tie with a 4-2 record, but this time it is for second place in the league standings.  Sky drops to 3-3 and sits alone in sixth place.

Nine different players on the Black squad scored, led by Cassie Murphy’s 19 points. Sam Yencha added 11.  Claire Dougherty led Sky Blue with 21.  Kara Meredith added 13 and Taylor Hinkle chipped in ten.

The game saw a total of nine ties and five lead changes with the majority of those coming in the fourth period.

Sky led by as many as ten in the second quarter, 24-14 before Black came back with a 15-7 run to pull within two at halftime.

Black had taken a 33-31 lead in the third quarter on Emily Spratt’s basket early in the third quarter.

  Sky tied the score twice before the quarter ended but Black held off their efforts to retake the lead and held held a slim one-point lead 46-45 heading into the final period.

Meredith tied the game at 48-48 and Dougherty followed with a traditional three-point play to give Sky a 51-48 lead.

Black battled back and tied the score at 54-54 with a pair of free throws midway through the period and Emma Kuczynski followed with a basket to give black the lead again, 56-54.

Sky rallied to tie the game again 58-58 and black counter with a basket from the corner by Kuczynski with 1:27 left to go back up by two.

Skyler Searfoss tied the game again with two free throws just under a minute left before Murphy struck again with a traditional three-point play with 42 ticks on the clock, giving Black a 63-60 lead.

  Sky brought the ball down and Hinkle sank a short jumper to move within one.

 Sky forced a turnover on Black’s next possession and set up for a final possession.   Dougherty’s shot with eight seconds left fell short and Black held on for the 63-62 win.
