The Guru Philly Summer League Report: Top-Seed Pink Dodges Upset and Joined by Seeds 2-Black/D2 Jefferson, 3-Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family and 5-Purple Haze-D2 West Chester in Semifinals

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Down to just the minimal five players at the outset, which avoided a forfeit, top-seeded Pink went on to gain extra help from a late-arriving Cassie Spratt near the end of the third quarter, shooting 11-15 from the line the rest of the way, as the squad dodged a shocking upset edging ninth-seeded Royal Blue/D2-Goldey-Beacom 69-66 Tuesday night in quarterfinal play in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Spratt finished with13 points keeping Pink afloat as a 10-point lead began to shrivel to a possession’s differential.

Second-seed Black/D2-Jefferson cruised over seventh-seeded Maroon/D3-Arcadia 76-39 while third-seeded Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family avenged a regular-season loss routing sixth-seeded Orange Citrus 63-42.

But fifth-seeded Purple/D2-West Chester played the season revenge card to a 69-60 win over fourth-seeded Lime Citrus, ending the opposition’s season at 6-4 including the one playoff round.

Maroon, which downed winless Sunburst in one of Thursday’s two-out bracket openers, finishes at 4-7, while Royal Blue is done at 2-9 after upsetting eighth-seed Red Fire/D2-Chestnut Hill in the other first round game.

Orange Citrus goes home at 5-5.

Thursday’s semifinals look to be exciting with Pink (9-1) opening at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 playing Purple Haze (7-3) followed by Black (8-2) meeting Sky Blue (7-3) at 7:45 p.m. on Court 1.

The league is dark next Tuesday followed by the championship Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. on Court 1.

That game will be streamed on the YouTube channel of Ari Bluestein’s SFBN network — a precious link will be published here after the semifinals.

Drexel’s Zach Feinberg will be on the play-by-play call.

Sky Blue and Black in the winter compete in the South Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and in their regular season meeting here Black edged Sky Blue 63-62 on June 27 just before the one-week break for the July 4th holiday.

Pink, whose only loss was to Sky Blue just after clinching the top seed with two games remaining, beat Purple Haze 74-55 two days earlier on June 25.

Four players, three on winning sides, hit the performance highlights of 20 or more points for the night.

Caleigh Sperling had 26 points for Black, the best for the night, Katie Yoder scored 22 for Royal Blue in the setback, while Taylor Hamm for Pink and Michelle Kozicki for Purple Haze each scored 20.

Three have hit the mark in earlier outings this season. Hamm did it four times, including a league season—best 39 points while Yoder and Kozicki did it three times, one of which was 31 points from Yoder.

Now here’s Bob with the recaps followed by the scoreboard and then we’ll be back by Thursday morning to preview the semifinals.

Quarterfinals Recaps

#1 Cyber Pink 69  #9 Royal Blue 67

Defending league champion Cyber Pink (alumni team 1) held off a furious rally from ninth seed Royal Blue (D2-Goldey-Beacom College) to earn a 69-66 win and advance to Thursday night’s semifinals.

Pink expanded the lead to 16 in the third quarter before royal started their comeback, cutting the lead to 12 heading into the final period.  Pink still led by ten with about six minutes left when Royal exploded for a 9-2 run to pull within three 56-53 with 3:57 left.  Three point baskets from Yoder and Kulesza and a layup-and one from Kulesza accounted for the nine points.  Kulesza added another three point bucket with 2:40 left to close the gap to two 58-56.

A basket from Crim and a couple of free throws from Spratt pushed the lead back to four before Yoder sank another three-ball to pull royal within one 62-61 with 1:13 left.  Pink got a free throw from Kremp and two more from Spratt to extend the Pink lead to four 65-61.  Both teams exchanged free throws before a defensive stop by Pink led to two more free throws from Hamm and a 69-63 lead.  Royal added two more free throws and got a basket from Farrah White to make the final score 69-67.

Pink will play #5 Purple Haze in Thursday night’s semi-final game.  Purple was a 69-60 winner over #4 Lime Citrus.
