Philly WBB Summer League: Under Seeds Maroon (USciences), Sky Blue (Holy Family) To Title Round
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller
HATBORO, Pa. — In a rarity, the regular-season ending No. 1 seed, which for the second straight year was Team Black (8-1), also known as D2-Jefferson, will not appear in the title game Tuesday night competing for the championship of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.
For that matter, neither will No. 2 seed, which was Team Red, a combination of D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg (8-1) be around.
But the defending champion Team Maroon (7-2), also known as the D2 Usciences group, has survived to compete from the fourth seed slot and has made it to the last night of the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
And on the other side in what has been one of the surprises of the summer, third-seeded Team Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family (7-2), will be Maroon’s opponent in the showdown at 7 p.m. on Court 1.
By seeds it was a night of upsets but with the semifinals concluded Thursday night, all four teams, counting the playoffs, had lost two games each, all suffering setbacks within the group.
The evening began and ended with the usual tightly-fought ongoing rivalry between Jefferson and USciences extend into overtime until the No. 4 Devils made it a summer sweep of the No. 1 Rams 60-52 after earlier beating Jefferson 73-64 in their regular-season matchup July 9 in what was also the 2018 league title game showdown last year.
Black went unbeaten through the summer of 2018 until Maroon topped it in the championship.
Then the duo continued with their local rivalry in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) into the winter, each earning Top 10 rankings and losing to each other in their home-and-home series while Jefferson also suffered one other lost.
But the CACC title game saw Jefferson beat USciences by a point in overtime.
Each then played in the D2 regional at USciences, Jefferson eliminated the first night and USciences falling the next round.
Tuesday night, however, will still be a meeting of CACC opponents since Sky Blue, which took down Red 63-59 to avenge one of two season losses, 52-46 on July 16, is also in the conference.
The Tigers had trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter.
The other Holy Family loss was to Black 74-48 on opening night but early in the summer, Sky Blue took down Maroon 56-55 on June 25.
Red also upset Maroon 73-65 on opening night and continued unbeaten until Black beat Red 67-62 in overtime on July 18.
All that created the paths into Tuesday’s pairings since Black’s head-to-head win over Red made them first in the playoffs dropping Red to only second since each had beaten Sky Blue and Maroon.
Then Sky Blue’s early upset of Maroon became the tie break into their 7-2 finish to place Sky Blue third and Maroon fourth.
Despite Maroon’s experience nothing is a given going into the championship.
The happiest person in the stands these past several weeks has been Bernadette Laukaitis, the former longtime assistant to Michael McLaughlin at Penn and at Holy Family, her alma mater, who became the Tigers’ new coach after the season..
Under NCAA regulations, D2 and D3 coaches are allowed to watch their winter teams play and furthermore those squads can compete as complete or roster-dominated units.
Black’s Tom Shirley was around most of the summer as was USciences Jackie Hartzell, although Thursday she was away as part of this week’s personal vacation.
Meanwhile after last Thursday’s five-player explosion, all from the same game, in reaching the nightly special 20-points-or-more citation, just two hit the mark on Tuesday.
Both came from the first game as USciences’ Irisa Ye had 29 points, fueled by three three-balls, for the night’s best performance, just two ahead of Black’s Alynna Williams, who had 27 off five three-pointers.
Now here’s Bob with the recap of each of the semifinals.
Recaps:
#4 Maroon 60 #1 Black 52 (Overtime)
In a rematch of last year’s championship game, Maroon (D2-USciences) and Black (D2-Jefferson) played what was a typical matchup between these two squads who are also rivals in the regular season: low scoring, few fouls and good defense.
So much so that the two teams needed extra time to decide who would advance to Tuesday’s championship game.
Maroon’s Irisa Ye sank four free throws in the final 31 seconds of the overtime to propel the Devils to a 60-52 win over Black.
This will be Maroon’s fifth straight trip to the league championship game.
Ye led all scorers with 29 points, including three three-point baskets and an 8-8 performance from the free throw line, while Jordan Vitelli and Jess Huber added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Alynna Williams led Black with 27 points while Bridget Arcidiacono chipped in nine.
While Ye closed out the game with her free throws in the overtime it was Vitelli and Huber that got the offense going in the extra period.
Vitelli opened the scoring with her third three-point basket of the game, recording the eighth lead change of the contest and giving Maroon a 53-50 advantage.
Williams countered with a quick foul line jumper to pull Black within one 53-52.
Huber added her second three-ball of the game with 1:08 to make the score 56-52 and after a defensive stop Black was forced to foul, sending Ye to the line for the first time with 31 seconds left and again with 20 seconds.
Ye made all four to secure the win.
The fourth quarter also belonged to Ye as the trend of neither team pulling away from each other continued.
Neither team led by more than two points throughout the period and Ye scored eight of her team’s nine points including the basket that eventually sent the game into overtime with the score knotted at 50-50.
Black held their biggest lead of five points early in the game as they jumped out to a 7-2 advantage and led 15-12 after one quarter.
Maroon took their first lead of the game at 20-18 as Ye scored the team’s first eight points of the period.
Taylor Hamm’s layup on a great pass from Shannon May gave Maroon their largest lead of the half a 26-21.
Arcidiacono hit a three from just inside the half court line at the buzzer to cut Maroon’s lead to one at the half 26-25.
Williams scored ten points in the third quarter as the lead again changed hands several times and was tied on five occasions.
When the dust settled Black was ahead 43-41 as the two teams headed into the fourth quarter, a quarter that neither team scored more than ten points (9-7 Maroon) and led to the overtime.
#3 Sky Blue 63 #2 Red 55
In the second semi-final game of the night, #3 seed Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) rallied from a ten point third quarter deficit to defeat #2 seed Red (D2 West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) 63-55 to advance to the championship game against #4 Maroon (CACC rival USciences).
Sky Blue had a well-balanced scoring effort, putting four players in double figures led by Dana Dudley’s 14 points.
Liz Radley, in her first game over two weeks following an injury added 13 as did Monee Moore. Anjelai Hayes chipped in ten.
Red, who had only six players available for the game, also placed four in double figures with Leah Johnson and Avery Bennett scoring 13 apiece.
Gabby Troisi added 11 and Fiona Aromondo chipped in ten.
Red jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and led 11-5 before baskets by Dockery, Moore and Casey Schweitzer tied the score at 11-11 heading into the second quarter.
A three-ball from Aromondo and two baskets from Johnson gave Red an 18-11 lead but Sky Blue countered with a 9-2 flourish to tie the game at 20-20.
Red closed out the quarter on a 12-4 run to lead by eight at the half 32-24.
Bennett’s basket to start the third quarter gave Red their biggest lead of the game at 34-24.
Sky Blue then kicked it up a notch with a 15-4 uprising to take their first lead of the game at 39-38 with 3:59 left in the period.
Red came back and tied the game twice in the final two minutes of the quarter before Megan O’Connell sank a three-ball to put Sky Blue up 46-43 heading into the final period.
Sky Blue scored four of the first five field goals in the fourth quarter to open up a 54-45 lead as it appeared that Red might be running out of gas with only six players available.
They still trailed 56-47 with 5:10 remaining when they embarked on one final push, outscoring Sky Blue 8-1 over the next two minutes to pull within two 57-55 with three minutes left.
Mary DeSimone had all eight of the Red team’s points (two three pointers and a two-pointer).
Dockery and Radley then scored on back-to-back possessions to make it a two possession game at 61-55.
Dockery added another basket with 1:20 left to round out the scoring.
Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym
The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.
The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads.
