Philly WBB Summer League: Red (5-0) Takes First After Maroon (3-2) Upsets Black (4-1)
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller
HATBORO, Pa. — The July Fourth week-long break may be over but there were on-the-court fireworks galore Tuesday night as action resumed in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.
Bob has the complete details but in writing the overview here, by the way Black (D2-Jefferson) and Maroon (D2-USciences) keep getting after it as the top two teams out of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the winner can normally not be credited with a huge upset whether they meet here in the summer or on each other’s court and usually in the CACC playoffs in the winter.
But still, upset is an appropriate description this time around considering Maroon’s ragged start before the break and Black’s unbeaten run, duplicating the path the Rams were on last summer until the Devils ruined the perfection in the league title game.
Rallying in the third quarter, Maroon went on to top Black 73-64, which enabled Red (D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) to take sole possession of first unbeaten at 5-0 after gaining an 58-52 win over Royal Blue (D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury).
Red had to hold on at the end after gaining a sizable lead earlier in the contest.
Purple (D2-East Stroudsburg Alums) stayed on the winning side of .500 at 3-2 by dropping a 51-41 win over Kelly Green (D2-Millersville/D3 Moravian), which fell to 1-4.
Everything is up to date now that Orange (D3-Ursinus) and Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia) made up their postponed game from wet floor conditions in a nightcap doubleheader after each first played their regularly scheduled games of the night.
Neither fared well in lopsided outcomes as Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) continued its torrid start, this time in front of new Tigers coach Bernadette Laukaitis, who was in the stands to see an easy easy 84-40 win over Orange.
Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill) gained its second win cruising over Golden Sun 72-45.
Then somebody had to win the makeup nightcap and the honors went to Orange, which finished with a 64-58 win.
Meanwhile, two of three D-1 players made their debut on teams with Villanova’s Raven James scoring 18 points in Kelly Green’s loss to Purple while Davidson’s Alana Davidson played for Orange.
Unfortunately, former Villanova blue chip prospect Mackenzie Gardler out of Cardinal O’Hara, who redshirted her freshman season with the Wildcats, informed the commissioner’s office that an injury will keep her sidelined the rest of the summer, though at this hour she is expected to play this winter.
Individual Performances
Though there were several near misses, just one player hit the nightly 20-points or more scoring plateau in Lauren Crim, a D2-Chestnut Hill College sophomore out of Lansdale Catholic who picked up where she left off before the holiday break with another 20-point scoring spree to lead Lime Green to handing the first of two losses on the night to Golden Sun, also known as D3-Arcadia.
In what is an unusually low output to date, at over the halfway point on the regular season schedule there are just nine players who have produced 12 achievements in the five game nights with Crim, Kelly Green’s Samantha Brusha, and Maroon’s Jess Huber producing double marks on the list.
Breaking Ties
Other than Red (D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg 5-0) all alone and unbeaten at the top and Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia 0-5), all alone and yet to win at the bottom in tenth, ties exist the rest of the way but there is no mass logjam after Tuesday’s action and all but one are easily broken with the the unbroken one for the moment slotted alphabetically.
So if the regular season ended right now heading to the playoffs, in the deadlock for second Black (D2-Jefferson 4-1), after falling from the unbeaten slot, salvages second off its season-opening win over Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family 4-1), which slots at third.
In the next two-way tie-break, defending champion Maroon (D2-USciences 3-2) off its upset by standings, but maybe not really all that big over Black, gives it fourth ahead of Purple (D2-East Stroudsburg alums 3-2), which then slots fifth.
Maroon and Purple have yet to meet, which will occur on night eight just before the end of the schedule this month.
Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Gill 2-3) and Royal Blue (D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury 2-3) are tied for sixth but Royal Blue has a head-to-head win to gain sixth place dropping Lime Green to seventh.
Kelly Green (D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian 1-4) and Orange (D3-Ursinus 1-4) are tied for eighth and have yet to meet and each’s sole win is over Golden Sun.
So for the moment courtesy of the alphabet, Kelly Green is eighth and Orange is ninth, leaving Golden Sun to round out the standings, which will change much in the remaining four nights.
To repeat the basics, this is the section that will house how seeds are determined each night leading to the playoffs in which all 10 teams qualify but the top six get byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round will match seeds seven and ten besides sees eight and nine in a doubleheader to advance the other two.
Two-way ties are determined by head-to-head results.
Along the way if teams haven’t met yet, then best win becomes the deal maker.
Three or more teams involved in a deadlock are determined through common records against each other.
In some situations before getting near the final standings, the criteria hasn’t been met and teams will just be arbitrarily placed and when that is done in that manner it will be reported in this place.
The quick way to look at how seeds are shaping is the tie-tracker grid at the bottom of this report but in front of the rosters.
Looking Ahead
Completing the first week after the holiday break on Thursday the hottest game of the night will be at 8:15 in the Court 1 nightcap as unbeaten Red (5-0) meets Sky Blue (4-1).
Black (4-1) looking to shake off its loss to Maroon will meet Purple (3-2) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2 in a nightcap contest.
Maroon (3-2) hoping to minimally hold its surge if not moving forward will meet Lime Green (2-3) on Court 3 at 7 p.m., the sole game on that court now that the makeup game has been played between Orange and Golden Sun.
USciences and Chestnut Hill are winter rivals in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
Finishing off the night’s schedule, Golden Sun will next try to get its first win playing Royal Blue (2-3) at 7 p.m. on Court 1 while Orange (1-4) gets an opportunity against Kelly Green (1-4) to extend the first win over Golden Sky and pick up s head-to-head result.
Re-Caps
Maroon 73 Black 64
In a rematch of last year’s championship game, Team Maroon used a three-point barrage to battle back and rally from an eight-point deficit to hand Team Black their first loss of the season 73-64.
The two teams also represent the preeminent small college squads in the Philadelphia area with Maroon featuring players from University of the Sciences and Black player from Jefferson University.
The two teams split their regular season games last year and Jefferson defeated USciences in the CACC Championship game.
The two squads both earned bids to the NCAA Division II Tournament last season with USciences hosting as the #1 seed in the East. Jefferson lost in the first round while ‘Sciences advanced one round further.
On Tuesday, Maroon led for all but one possession in the first half of action and held a 35-31 advantage at the start of the third quarter.
Black opened the third quarter on a 9-2 spurt to take a 40-37 lead as Sabria Lytes scored Black’s first six points of the quarter and Alexandra Warren capped the run with a three-ball.
The Rams expanded their lead to eight points 50-42 before Maroon started connecting with the long ball.
Jordan Vitelli and Jess Huber hit back-to-back threes in the final minute of the third quarter to pull Maroon within two and Kendall Keyes sank a three-ball to open the fourth quarter and give Maroon a 53-52 lead.
After Lytes put Black back on top, Irisa Ye countered with a layup and Brigit Coleman banked in a three to push Maroon’s lead to four.
Caitlyn Cunningham brought Black within two at 59-57 before Maroon used a 10-3 run, highlighted by two Huber three-balls (the latter from beyond NBA range) to take a 69-60 lead midway through the quarter.
Maroon’s defense held Black to just one field goal the rest of the way while Irisa Ye added to more of her team-high nine field goals and 18 points to seal the nine-point win.
Ye led three Maroon players in double figures with 18.
Vitelli sank four three-pointers and finished with 14 points while Huber matched Vitelli’s three-point total and finished with 13 points. The Maroon squad had 11 total three-pointers in the contest.
Lytes led all scorers with 19 points (11 in the second half) while Warren scored 15 (three three’s). Cunningham added 13 points and Alynna Williams chipped in 11.
Orange 64 Golden Sun 58
Tuesday night’s action also saw two teams play a doubleheader on the evening as Team Orange (Ursinus College) and Team Golden Sun (Arcadia University) played their regularly scheduled games at the 7:00 p.m. slot and then faced off against each other at 8:15 to makeup an earlier game that was postponed due to wet floor conditions.
Entering the make-up game both Orange and Golden Sun were seeking their first win of the season.
Orange turned a solid third quarter to overcome an eight point deficit and went on to defeat Golden Sun 64-58.
Orange placed four players in double figures led by Gabby downs’ 13 points.
Courtney Hardy added 12 while Marissa Morano and Kristin Hamill chipped in 10 apiece.
Taylor Fritz was the lone Golden Sun player in double figures with 11 points while Taylor Dunn added nine.
Four lead changes highlighted the first quarter with Orange holding a four point edge.
Golden Sun opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run, getting baskets from six different players to take a 24-18 lead.
Orange closed within two on a Francesca Bogiatzis basket before Aysa Alba scored four of Golden Suns’ final six points to give her team a 37-31 lead at halftime.
Orange roared back in the third quarter, with a 12-2 run to erase an eight point lead with Hardy’s bucket giving her team a 45-43 lead.
Orange led by one heading into the final period and steadily increased their lead as the period played out, eventually going taking a ten point lead 62-52 in the final minute before settling in for the six point win.
Red 58 Royal Blue 52
Team Red, which features players from West Chester University and Gettysburg University, is now the only undefeated team at the midway point of the season with a perfect 5-0 record as they held off a late charge from Team Royal Blue (Salisbury University/Kutztown) to win 58-52.
Royal outscored Red 11-2 over the final four minutes of action but the Red squad had built a big enough advantage heading into the final period (19 points) to withstand the run.
Red jumped out in front from the opening tap and built a double digit lead 20-10 by the end of the first quarter.
A well balanced attack that saw seven different players score in the second pushed their lead to 11, 38-27 at the break.
The Red squad increased their lead to 19, 50-31 outscoring Royal 12-4 in the third quarter.
Led by Casey Remolde and Karen Lapkiewicz Royal started to chip away at the lead bringing it down within single digits in the final two minutes.
Remolde scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter while Lapkiewicz added four fourth quarter points late in the game to bring the final margin down to six 58-52.
Alyssa Bondi and Kyle Webb had 12 points apiece to pace the Royal Blue squad.
Katie Fisher was the lone player from red to reach double figures with 11 points. Becca Margolis, Carly Rice and Leah Johnson each had nine points.
Sky Blue 84 Orange 40
Team Sky Blue (featuring Holy Family University players) earned their fourth win of the season with an 84-40 blowout of Team Orange, one of two early game blowouts on the night.
Sky Blue put four players in double figures led by Monee Moore and Anjalai Hayes’ 13 points apiece.
Liz Radley added 11 while Megan Hughes chipped in 10. Dana Dockery sank three three-pointers for nine points.
Orange was led by Marisa Morano’s 12 points while Kristin Hamill chipped in ten.
Sky Blue led wire-to-wire, opening up a 27-11 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Hayes scored seven of her 13 points in the opening period.
Hayes added four more points in the second quarter with Radley and Hughes combining for nine as Sky increased their lead to 46-21 at the half.
Sky continued to produce offensively, increasing their lead to 65-33 after three quarters and outscored Orange 19-7 in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
Lime Green 72 Golden Sun 45
Lime Green (featuring players from Chestnut Hill College) earned their second win of the season in grand style, easily handling Golden Sun 72-45.
Lauren Crim scored a game high 20 points to lead the victors, the only player on the night to score 20 or more in a game.
Brianna Cullen added ten points.
Taylor Dunn and Taylor Fritz led Golden Sun with 14 and eight points respectively.
Lime Green held Golden Sun to just three first quarter points, jumping out to a 16-3 advantage after one quarter and increasing their lead to 16, 30-14 by halftime.
Crim scored eight of her 20 points in the third quarter as Lime Green pushed their lead to 30 51-21. She added seven more points in the fourth quarter as Lime Green built their biggest lead at 68-35 with four minutes left.
Golden Sun closed out the game with a 10-4 spurt and finished the quarter outscoring Lime Green 24-21 to produce the 72-45 final.
Purple 51 Kelly Green 41
The final late game of the evening featured Team Purple (East Stroudsburg alumni) taking on Team Kelly Green (Millersville/Moravian).
The short-handed Green squad battled with Purple for all four quarters with Purple pulling away in the final period for the 51-41 win, their third of the season.
Raven James, a Division I player from Villanova University made her summer league debut with the Kelly Green squad and led all scorers with 18 points.
Fourteen of her 18 points came in the second half.
Rachel Falkowski led Purple with ten points.
The two squads started off slowly as neither team reached double figures after the first ten minutes of action with Kelly Green leading 9-6.
Purple opened the second quarter with a 7-2 spurt and took a 13-11 lead on Dana Bandurick’s bucket midway through the quarter.
Neither team produced much offense in the final five minutes of the quarter with Emma Blewitt’s basket with 1:30 left giving Purple their biggest lead of the period at 17-13, before the half ended with Purple on top 18-15.
The two team’s nearly equaled their offensive output of the first two quarters in the third quarter alone with the lead changing hands three times before Purple scored the final seven points of the period to lead 33-26.
Purple increased the lead to as many as ten points (43-33) in the fourth quarter following a Falkowski bucket at the 3:33 mark. Kelly Green would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as Purple earned the win.
