Philly WBB Summer League: Teams Black and Red Remain Unbeaten at 3-0

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — Three narrow outcomes, one of which resulted in defending champion Maroon (D2-USciences)  taking another early loss, highlighted play Tuesday night in the start of week two of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Two teams remained unbeaten with Black (D2-Jefferson), last season’s runner up, cruising to an 84-40 win over Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia) while Red (D2 West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) rallied to top Orange 83-78.

Orange is the one squad which is not dominated by either a single D2 or D3 squad or combo of the two NCAA lower divisional schools who compete in the winter.

Red and Black don’t meet until late next month near the end of the nine-game schedule and Red has already posted the other win over Maroon, which meets Black Tuesday, July 9, the first night of play resumption following the holiday break next week.

That night will also see the date in which D-1 players can join the action after some bureaucratic errors filing for certification caused a delay in their participation.

Meanwhile, all three of Maroon’s games have been close and in the latest a familiar opponent edged the Devils 56-55 in Sky Blue (D2-Holy family).

The two compete in the winter in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and Sky Blue is off to a 2-1 start, tied for third with Purple, a group of alums from D2-East Stroudsburg, which gained a narrow 52-51 win over Royal Blue, a combination-dominated group from D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury.

In the other of the five games, Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill), got its first win, easily topping Kelly Green (D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian) 74-57.

Four teams in Maroon, Royal Blue, Kelly Green, and Lime Green are tied for fifth but since it is still early in the season not enough games have been played to begin slotting teams in their tie-breaking seed placement slots for the playoffs.

As last summer, with just ten teams everyone makes the playoffs at the end of next month with seeds 7-10 and 8-9 meeting in the opening round doubleheader to advance two winners to the quarterfinals with the six bye teams.

At the bottom, Golden Sun (0-2) and Orange (0-2) are still looking for their first victory, though under normal circumstances, one of the duo would have a win by now.

That’s because the two were set to meet last Thursday but a wet floor caused by humid conditions following an evening downpour created a safety hazard and forced a postponement.

After the schedule resumes following the July fourth week-long break, a night will be slotted in which each of the duo will play their regularly scheduled game and then meet each other in an 8:15 p.m. nightcap.

Meanwhile, colleague Bob Heller is back on the scene and so this report will be the first to have re-cap detail from each of the five games.

Individual Performances

In our 20-points or more category to highlight nightly scoring performances, once again just three people hit the mark but this time all three are new and two came from the same Orange team with Kristin Hamill (Radnor High/Franklin & Marshall) getting the night’s top mark with 27 points and Courtney Hardy (Montclair) scoring 20.

Erin Doherty (Haverford High/Catholic U.)  had 22 to pace Lime Green to its first win.

Looking Ahead

The opening two weeks of play concludes Thursday night with games on all three courts at 7 p.m. followed by  nightcap doubleheaders at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1 and Court 2.

Then the schedule will go quiet all next week for the July 4th holiday.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., the two 2-1 teams of the Sky Blue group of Holy Family and Purple East Stroudsburg alums will met on Court 1 while 3-0 Red will be a strong favorite over 0-2 Golden Sun on Court 2.

An interesting matchup looms on Court 3 with 1-2 Royal Blue, the Kutztown/Salisbury combo meeting 0-2 Orange.

In the 8:15 p.m. nightcaps, 1-2 Kelly Green, the Millersville/Moravian group, meets 1-2 Maroon, the defending champs.

In what was expected to be the first super showdown, Black and Maroon meet right after the break so Maroon would like to avoid a loss Thursday, although several years ago one of the favorites suffered early losses but bounced back on a win streak to make the playoffs when not everyone qualified.

All that will be discussed in the next look ahead.

Now, here’s Bob with the recaps.

Recaps

Sky Blue 56, Maroon 55

Sky Blue rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to hand defending league champion Maroon its second loss of the season.

Maroon (also known as Division II USciences) had built a 45-32 lead late in the third quarter and 47-38 as the final period began.

The Devils still led by nine following Irisa Ye’s two free throws in the early minutes of the quarter.

Dana Dockery’s basket in the middle of a 13-0 run with 2:08 left gave Sky Blue, with the majority of the team hailing from Division II Holy Family University; their first lead since early in the second quarter at 50-49.

Free throws by Anjalai Hayes and Monee Moore pushed the lead to 53-49 with 28.7 seconds left.

Maroon’s Jess Huber then connected on a three point field goal; the team’s first basket of the quarter to close within one 53-52 with just 13.4 ticks left on the clock.

Elizabeth Radley made one of two from the charity stripe and Hayes sank two more to again open up a four point lead.

Jordan Vitelli’s three-ball as the buzzer sounded provided the final margin in the one point loss. Her basket at the buzzer was only the second field goal  by Maroon in the final quarter (in 14 total attempts).

Hayes led all scorers with 17 points while Radley (15 points) and Dockery (ten) also reached double digits for the victors.

Vitelli led Maroon with 14 points (four threes) while Brigit Coleman chipped in 11 (three threes).  Huber and Ye had ten points apiece.

Red 83, Orange 78

In other action, Team Red remained undefeated with a huge second half comeback to defeat Team Orange 83-78.

Team Red (players from D-II West Chester and D-III Gettysburg) trailed by 15 at half time and outscored Orange (also known as Ursinus) 26-11 over the first seven minutes of the third quarter.

Gabby Troisi’s basket at the 2:26 mark gave Red their first lead lead of the game 63-61 and the lead exchanged hands three more times before the teams went into the final quarter deadlocked at 70.

The Red squad came out on fire in the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points to take a 79-70 lead with 4:16 left.

A three-ball from Orange’s Gabby Downs closed the gap to five 79-74 and Kristin Hamill’s bucket at the 1:28 mark cut the gap to three 81-78.

Leah Johnson followed with a driving basket with just under a minute remaining to round out the scoring and seal the win for the Red Team who improves to 3-0 on the season.

Johnson led four Red players in double figures with 14 points while Sasha Marvel added 13.  McKenzie Tinner and Olivia Matto had 12 points apiece.

Orange had two players reach the 20-point plateau led by Hamill’s 27 points. Courtney Hary added 20 points while Gabby Downs scored 14.

 Black 84, Golden Sun 40

The league’s other unbeaten team, Black (also known as Jefferson University) had little trouble with Team Golden Sun (also known as Arcadia University), notching an 84-40 win to remain perfect at 3-0.

The Black squad produced a balanced scoring effort, placing five players in double figures, led by Caitlin Cunningham’s 15 points.

Ayanna Oguntuase added 14 points while Emily Keenfus chipped in 13.  Alexandra Warren and Sabria Lytes had 12 and 10 respectively.

Black jumped out to a double digit lead in the first quarter and expanded the margin to 21 points 48-27 at halftime and 34 at 74-37 at the end of three quarters before closing out the game with a 10-3 run in the fourth quarter.

Julia Makowski led Golden Sun with 12 points while Sami Falancki chipped in nine.

 Purple 52. Royal Blue 51

Melissa Poderis’ free throw in the waning seconds of the game lifted Team Purple to a 52-51 over Team Royal Blue.

The Purple squad whose composition mainly consists of alumni from East Stroudsburg University; led most of the way fending off several runs by the Royal Blue squad which consists mainly of players from Division II  Kutztown University and Division III Salisbury University.

The Royal squad held a 22-21 lead midway through the second quarter before Purple charged ahead, closing the period out on a 12-4 spurt to lead 33-26 at the break.

Royal came back with a 9-2 run to tie the game and 35-35 in the third quarter before Purple pulled ahead 41-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

A basket by Royal’s Kaylee Otkowski tied the game at 47-47 with 4:312 left but the Purple squad scored the next four points to lead 51-47 with 2:36 left.

Royal again rallied to tie the game at 51-51 with 55 seconds left before Poderis broke the deadlock with a single make from the charity stripe in the final seconds to seal the win.

Purple’s Sydney Blum led all scorers with 14 points. Emma Stanfield and Madison Tamburini chipped in ten apiece for the victors.  Otkowski and Karen Lapkiewicz had 12 points apiece for Royal.

Lime Green 74, Kelly Green 57

Team Lime Green, whose team is comprised of players mainly from Chestnut Hill College,
earned their first win of the season, defeating team Kelly Green 74-57.

Lime Green used an 11-2 run to erase a five point Kelly advantage in the first quarter to take a 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A three point basket from Kate Seeman and a layup from Samantha Brusha gave Kelly a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter.

Later in the period with the game tied at 22-22 Lime Green went on a 13-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back three pointers from Erin Doherty and Cassie Sebold to take a 35-24 lead at halftime.

Kelly Green rallied in the third quarter to take a 39-37 lead with Mia Leonard’s basket putting her team ahead.

Lime Green scored ten straight points to close out the quarter and the first seven in the fourth quarter completing a 17-0 run to take a 54-39 lead midway through the final period and maintained their double digit advantage the rest of the way en route to their first win.

Doherty led all scorers with 22 points while teammate Lauren Crim chipped in 14.

Sebold and Brianna Cullen had nine points apiece.  Brusha led the Kelly Green squad with 19 points while Seeman and Leonard had nine points apiece.

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
