Philly WBB Summer League: Season Begins

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

The Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League begins Tuesday night returning once more to Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Willow Grove Industrial Commons in Hatboro, Pa.

As per last year, ten teams have been formed for the Tuesday and Thursday nights weekly schedule of nine overall regular season games which continues excepting July 4th week into the playoff championship on August 6.

With the 2019 launch, of course, the blog here, besides  ongoing summer coverage of the WNBA and other women’s hoops news as it occurs, will provide extensive coverage with your Guru providing the overall look and Bob Heller once again providing the detail of the flow of each game.

There are a few times when Bob may be away as other duties call while some nights the Guru will have to be on the WNBA trail but there are ways to stay up to date.

Also, the Chestnut Hill Local, due to many players in its circulation area, also covers the action.

The only stats kept for the official league records are points but we have found ways to provide some heft in the race for summer bragging rights.

Once under way, the coverage structure on the day-after will be a lede, the details of the five games, and when appropriate, implications of the outcomes, mention of the players who enter the 20-points or more running log, a look ahead to the next night, and a breaking-tie section to explain how the seedings for the postseason are developing.

The scoreboard section will include the standings, the 20-or more points running log, the results/schedule ahead, team-by-team schedule results, the rosters, and the running results grid that help determine tie-breaks, andthough the precise situation won’t be in play until enough games are played for truer standings.

There may also be additional features and possibly photos depending who gravitates to want to help coverage.

Since no games have been played un Tuesday night, this intro edition will go into other areas to also serve as a reference as the season moves along.

Times have changed but still running the show is commissioner David Kessler, who completed his 25th season last summer.

In earlier years ran the competition in other locations and as part of the Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation.

Getting Organized

With ten teams, slightly less than earlier seasons, everyone makes the playoffs, which will begin with a four-team opening round in late July to advance two winners to the quarterfinals.

As for changing times, the days of a plentitude of Division I players have for now evaporated.

In some cases it is due to summer classes at various universities.

For example, Saint Joseph’s used to be a strong participant but those able to compete found class work conflicted on those nights and were unable to reschedule.

Three players did register, Mackenzie Gardler, a prominent recruit out of Cardinal O’Hara a year ago, and Raven James, both  out of Villanova, and in an interesting quirk of names Alana Davidson, out of Davidson.

Gardler red-shirted her freshman season while James came on near the end to help the Wildcats win several key games, and Davidson is a graduate of New Hope-Solebury High.

Furthermore the D-1 trio won’t be able to compete until after the July 4th break due to a paperwork snafu by the commissioner in the annual certification process followed by the arduous NCAA dealings until certification was granted to start the calendar leading to a delay when D-1 players would be allowed to compete.

Though the D-1s aren’t in abundance, there is still much to enjoy.

Under NCAA rules, D2 and D3 schools can field their entire teams if desired and thus the area’s hottest rivalry in any division — Jefferson and USciences out of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference dominated league play a year ago with Jefferson going unbeaten and handing Sciences its only loss until the Devils gained revenge in the Philly League championship.

But then in the winter, each beat each other, Jefferson lost just one other game, and then the Rams topped the Devils in the CACC championship.

Both teams were nationally-ranked.

Jefferson, by the way, this winter will repeat the preseason visit of several years ago, traveling north to play the powerhouse UConn women.

D2 and D3 collegiate coaches are allowed to watch their teams perform per the NCAA rules.

In the league, team names are identified by their jersey colors though here at the blog we identified those schools who dominate a squad.

Nine of the ten are in such a situation with one being an alumni group from D2 East Stroudsburg (Purple), four being D2 stand-alone, Jefferson (Black), USciences (Maroon), Chestnut Hill (Lime Green), Holy Family (Sky Blue), one stand-alone D3 in Arcadia (Golden Sun), and three D2/D3 combos in D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg (Red), D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury (Royal Blue), and D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian (Kelly Green).

Class designates in these reports are what players will be per enrollment this fall when they return to campus, thus ’20-seniors, 21-juniors, 22-sophomores, 23-freshmen.

Games are played on three courts with 7:00 p.m. starts on Courts 1, 2, and 3, with a short allowance for late arrivals to field a roster before automatic forfeits occur, and nightcaps on Courts 1 and 2  at 8:15 p.m. with no allowance before automatic forfeits occur.

Additionally, the commissioner distributes his one-page printed newsletter with results, high scorers, and immediate games ahead with notes for each night which he provides for pickup.

The league also has a page on facebook.

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads.

If you are driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) just before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Rail Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym via Uber, Lyft, or taxi.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 bus route going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road.

The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall.

Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
