Philly WBB Summer League: Defending Champs Maroon Upset By Red in Season Openers

HATBORO, Pa. — A big upset marked the start of play in The Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League Tuesday night as Team Red composed predominantly of Division 2 West Chester and Division 3 Gettysburg players downed defending champion Team Maroon primarily D2-USciences 73-65.

A year ago Maroon lost during the 10-team, nine-game schedule to just Team Black (D2-Jefferson) but came back and knocked the then-unbeaten Rams off in the title game.

The two teams are top conference and national rivals in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and went on to perform similarly against each other and overall in the winter collegiate competition.

Black got off to another strong start Tuesday night, topping Sky Blue 74-48 in the five-game activity at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades here in the Willow Grove Industrial Commons complex.

    

The two teams are familiar with each other in that Sky Blue is also predominantly Holy Family, a CACC member, which changed winter coaches in the offseason.

Tigers alum and longtime Penn assistant Bernadette Laukaitis under Mike McLaughlin was recently named by the Tigers, where she also coached under McLaughlin. The duo steered Holy Family to national prominence and then helped the Quakers win four Ivy titles — one shared last winter — and three NCAA appearances.

Previous Holy Family coach Melissa Dunne, a former Temple star who also served at Drexel and George Washington, was named an assistant Monday to Cindy Griffin at Saint Joseph’s University.

In the Red upset, Leah Johnson, a West Chester freshman, had 24 points, one of three players Tuesday night who had 20 or more points. One of the others performed on Maroon with USciences junior Jess Huber out of North Penn firing seven three pointers on the way to 23 points.

Red also got 13 points out of Sasha Marvel (West Chester), while Mackenzie Tinner (Gettysburg), Mary DeSimone (West Chester) and Carly Rice (Gettysburg) each scored eight points.

Maroon also got nine points from Taylor Hamm of the Devils.

In Black’s win, Haley Meinel scored 14 points, Alexandra Warren scored 13, fueled by three triplets, while also in double figures Maddison Haney scored 12 points and Alynna Williams scored 10.

Sky Blue  had two in double figures – Anjelai Hayes scored 18 and Elizabeth Radley scored 14 – while Monee Moore, Dana Dockery, and Meghan Hughes each registered six points.

Besides, the Red win, the other close game of the night saw Purple composed predominantly of alumni from East Stroudsburg edge Orange 43-40.

Dana Bandurick of Swarthmore scored 14 for the winners and Rachel Falkowski scored seven. Orange, the lone team without a roster dominated by one or two schools, got 11 points from Lydia Konstanzer (Ursinus), and Gabby Downs (Ursinus) scored nine points.

The night’s top performer was Samantha Brusha, a sophomore out of Division 2 Millersville and North Penn who fired six triplets on the way to 32 points to lead Kelly Green, which also had a large contingent of D3 Moravian players, to a lopsided 76-52 win over Golden Sun, which is dominated by Division 3 Arcadia players.

Brooke Santy (Moravian)and Mia Leonard (Millersville) each scored 12 points for the winning Kelly Green squad.

Julia Makowski paced Golden Sun with 12 points while Jamie Manzo and Carleigh Galasso each scored six points.

In the remaining game, Royal Blue, a group dominated by players from D2 Kutztown and D3 Salisbury, downed Lime Green, built from D2 Chestnut Hill, 76-44.

Alyssa Bondi (Misericordia) fired four three-pointers on the way to 18 points for Royal Blue, just ahead of teammate Rachel Ryan’s 17(Salisbury), and Karen Lapkiewicz (Kutztown) had three triplets to help the cause with 17 points.

Lime Green’s Lauren Crim had all but one of her 13 points come from four treys, while Brianna Cullen (Widener) scored 8, and Cassie Sebold had seven.

Since colleague Bob Heller is elsewhere this week, the normal flow description of each game will not begin until his return.

Looking Ahead

The nature of quarter-century plus one commissioner David Kessler producing this year’s schedule, as always, combined with opening results, means that after the first week of two-game competition per team ends Thursday, the standings will be quickly reduced to just three unbeaten teams while just three teams will still be searching for their initial win.

In the early action involving the three 7 p.m. games two 0-1 teams will meet as Kelly Green plays Sky Blue on Court 1.

Red and Purple, both at 1-0, will meet on Court 2, while another set of 1-0 teams will meet on Court 3 as Kelly Green plays Black.

In the two 8:15 p.m. games, two teams that suffered opening setbacks will meet in the Court 1 nightcap as Orange, as mentioned, the lone squad not roster-dominated by a D2 or D3 or combined D2/D3 program, meets Golden Sun.

Maroon, coming off its upset loss, in bouncing back can actually reduce the unbeatens to two if it tops Royal Blue.

As per NCAA rules, entire Division II and Division III squads can play in summer leagues but only two undergraduate Division I players per school can compete from the same school on a team.

 

All ten teams make the playoffs with the four low seeds playing an opening round to advance to the quarterfinals.

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
