Philly WBB Summer League: Red Stays Unbeaten While Records Set in Orange 107-95 Win Over Kelly Green

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — In a tight battle Red, also known as the combination of D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg, outlasted the upstarts from Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, 52-46 Thursday night to stay unbeaten (6-0) and one game ahead of Black (5-1), also known as D2-Jefferson University, in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The loss knocked Sky Blue (4-2) back into a third-place tie with Maroon (D2-USciences) but an earlier head-to-head win puts the Tigers in the third seed for now ahead of their winter rival from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Black bounced back from its Tuesday upset loss to Maroon, another CACC rivalry, to easily run to a 69-47 win over Purple (3-3), also known as the alum contingent from D2-East Stroudsburg to stay alone in second place.

Purple fell to a fifth-place tie with Royal Blue but drops to the sixth seed because of the previous head-to-head loss to the D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury contingent, which on Thursday posted a 61-50 triumph over winless Golden Sun, also known as D3-Arcadia.

Maroon stayed on the winning track following its upset of previously unbeaten Black on Tuesday night by gaining a 74-66 win over Lime Green (2-4), its D2-Chestnut Hill College rival in the CACC.

With just three games left on the nine-game schedule in the 10-team league the next showdown and one likely to determine the top seed will occur next Thursday when Red and Black meet at 7 p.m. on Court 3.

But first, Red must beat Kelly Green (also known as the combination of D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian) at 7 p.m. on Court 3 while Black needs to get past Orange (2-4), also known as D3-Ursinus, at 7 p.m. on Court 1 on Tuesday.

A Red win over Black would wrap up the top seed while the outcome the other way puts Black in position to take the top spot if the teams finish in a tie.

But don’t assume givens for Tuesday night because while there was a pre-game deluge outside from the weather gods, inside another downpour occurred that likely set league records, though there is no official archival history of the competition from long ago.

Orange (2-4), after gaining its first win Tuesday, beating Golden Sun in the makeup game from the pre-holiday week postponement due to a wet floor, topped Kelly Green in an explosive 107-95 triumph.

A season-high five players Thursday night scored 20 or more points for individual performance citation but four came out of this contest with a likely all-time record of 49 points from Orange’s Kristin Hamill, a Franklin & Marshall senior out of Radnor High.

Orange also got 20 from Alyssa Martin, an Ursinus freshman from Gynedd Mercy.

Meanwhile, Samantha Brusha, a Millersville sophomore out of Abington High, who has already had a couple of citation nights, scored 39 against Orange for Kelly Green while Kate Seeman, a Rochester player from Lenape, scored 20 for Kelly Green.

The fifth 20-point highlight landed on the mark with that total collected by Misericordia sophomore Alyssa Bondi out of East Bruswick, N.J., for Royal Blue.

Bob will have the in-depth breakdown of all five Thursday games a bit below our overview sections.

Looking Ahead

Having mentioned the Black (5-1)-Orange (2-4) and Red (6-0)-Kelly Green (1-5) matchups on Tuesday’s card, the other three games have Purple (3-3) meeting Line Green (2-4) on Court 1 in the 8:15 p.m. nightcap while Royal Blue (3-3) will meet Sky Blue (4-2) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2.

Maroon (4-2) will meet Golden Sun (0-6) at 7 p.m. on Court 2.

Breaking Ties

While the race is tight, deadlocks for the most part are handling themselves in terms of how the slotting shapes up for the post season.

All ten teams make the playoffs but the opening round will be a play-in affair with the top six teams earning byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round doubleheader will match the seventh and tenth seeds as well as the eighth and ninth seeds.

Right now, as mentioned, Red is alone and unbeaten in first while likewise Black is alone a game behind in second.

Third place is deadlocked with Sky Blue getting third off its earlier head-to-head win over fourth-place Maroon, the defending champs.

Royal Blue’s head-to-head win over Purple takes care of the fifth place slot dropping Purple to sixth.

At the moment an arbitrary move via the alphabet has Lime Green (2-4) in seventh ahead of eighth-place Orange (2-4).

The two meet Thursday next week at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2 to settle the issue.

Kelly Green (1-5) is alone in ninth with Golden Sky (0-6) holding tenth at the bottom.

To repeat the basics, this is the section that will house how seeds are determined each night leading to the playoffs in which all 10 teams qualify but the top six get byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round will match seeds seven and ten besides sees eight and nine in a doubleheader to advance the other two.

Two-way ties are determined by head-to-head results. Along the way if teams haven’t met yet, then best win becomes the deal maker.

Three or more teams involved in a deadlock are determined through common records against each other.

In some situations before getting near the final standings the criteria hasn’t been met and teams will just be arbitrarily placed and when that is done it will be reported in this place.

The quick way to look at how seeds are shaping is the tie-tracker grid at the bottom of this report but in front of the rosters.

Now here’s Bob with the in-depth narratives from Thursday.

   Re-Caps:

Red  52   Sky Blue   46

Team Red (West Chester/Gettysburg) maintains sole possession of first place with a 52-46 win over Team Sky Blue (Holy Family).

Red’s record remains unblemished at 6-0 while Sky Blue falls into a third place tie with Maroon at 4-2.

Leah Johnson led Red with 13 points while Fiona Aromando and Carly Rice had 12 and 11 respectively.

Liz Radley led all scorers, pacing Sky Blue with 15 points.  Dana Dockery added 11.

The two teams exchanged leads several times over the course of the first20 minutes with Sky Blue opening up a five point lead late in the second quarter before Red closed within three with a pair of free throws with no time left on the clock.

Sky Blue’s lead oscillated between two and five points throughout the third quarter with Megan O’Connell’s free throw with just under two minutes left giving Sky their biggest lead at 38-33.

Red scored the final three points of the quarter to close within two 38-36.

Rice opened the fourth quarter with a basket to tie the score at 38-all.

A second bucket from Rice at the 4:46 mark broke a 40-40 tie and started a 9-3 spurt by Red, giving the league leaders a 49-43 lead with 2:50 left.

Aromando’s three-point bucket capped the rally, giving Red a two-possession advantage.

Neither team would score another basket the rest of the way as Red hung on for the six point win.

 Orange 107  Kelly Green  95

Meanwhile earlier in the evening Team Orange (Ursinus) and Team Kelly Green (Millersville/Moravian) combined to put over 200 points on the scoreboard as Orange got a 49-point performance from Kristin Hamill en route to a 107-95 win.

Hamill wasn’t the only player putting up points.

Kelly Green’s Samantha Brusha knocked down 39 points while teammate Kate Seeman pumped in 28.

Alyssa Martin contributed 20 points to the Orange offense while teammate Alana Davidson, playing in her second game of the summer league chipped in 16.

The New Hope native plays for Davidson in the Atlantic 10 and will be the season opening host of Drexel in the Women’s NIT.

Kelly Green’s Mia Leonard scored 15 points.

A six-point game at the half, Brusha’s three-ball to open the third quarter pulled Kelly Green within three at 54-51 before Orange produced a 13-5 run to take an 11 point lead at 67-56.

A Hamill three-ball later pushed the lead to 13, 73-60 before another long range basket from Brusha cut the lead back to ten only to see Orange push the lead back to 14 by the end of the period.

Defense went away in the fourth quarter as both teams combined for 56 points in the period.

Hamill gave Orange their biggest lead at 87-69 early in the period before Kelly Green slowly began to chip away at the lead, cutting it to single digits 99-90 late in the game.

Orange broke the century mark on their next possession and held off the late rally for a 12-point win, 107-95.

Maroon 74   Lime Green 66

Mother Nature almost forced the postponement of a game for the second time this season as water was coming in the back doors of the gym where Court 3 is located and where Team Maroon (USciences) and Team Lime Green (Chestnut Hill) were about to square off.

Following a discussion and some cleanup the game got under way.

There was still rain however, in the form of three-point baskets as Maroon rained down three point baskets throughout the 40 minutes of action, holding off a Lime Green team that would not quit 74-66 to move into a third place tie with Team Sky Blue at 4-2.

Maroon sank seven three-point field goals in the first quarter alone, jumping out to a 29-14 lead and extending their lead to 39-21 at the half.

Two more three-balls from Maroon were part of the opening salvo in the third quarter as a 12-4 run pushed Maroon’s lead to its biggest margin 51-25 just four minutes into the quarter.

Lime Green countered with a 13-0 uprising, capped by a Lauren Crim three-ball to cut Maroon’s lead in half 51-38.

Three-pointers from Jordan Vitelli and Kendall Keyes quickly pushed the lead back up to 19, 57-38 before Lime scored the final two baskets of the quarter to trail 57-42.

Lime Green continued to slowly chip away at the lead but Maroon managed to maintain their double digit advantage until the final minute, again thanks to their three-point shooting.

Vitelli hit the last two of her five total three-point field goals in an 8-3 run to give Maroon a 70-55 lead.

Lime closed the gap with an 11-4 run over the final three minutes but the deficit was too big as Maroon hung on 74-66.

Vitelli led a balanced Maroon scoring attack with 17 points (five three’s).

Irisa Ye and Jess Huber had three-three-point field goals apiece and finished with 11 and nine points respectively.  Kerry Patterson also added nine points.

 As a team Maroon connected on a season-high 16 three-point field goals.

Alana Cardona led Lime Green with 17 points while Lindsey Lane added 13.  Crim chipped in 12.

Royal Blue  61  Golden Sun  50

Team Royal Blue (Kutztown/Salisbury) evened their record at 3-3 with a 61-50 win over Team Golden Sun (Arcadia).

Alyssa Bondi led Royal Blue with 20 points while Taylor Dunn had 18 to pace Golden Sun.

The two teams battled through much of the first quarter and into the second when Royal started to pull away, opening up an eight point lead at the half

Royal increased the lead to 12, 35-23 on a Bondi basket with four minutes left in the third quarter before Golden Sun countered with seven straight points to close within five 35-30.

Royal ended the period on a 9-1 spurt to lead 44-31.

Golden Sun chipped away at the lead, closing within seven 51-44 with three minutes remaining but that would be as close as they would come and Royal finished the game with a 10-6 run to earn a double-digit win.

Black  69  Purple  47

Team Black (Jefferson) bounced back after suffering their first loss o ft the season earlier in the week, cruising to a 69-47 win over Team Purple (East Stroudsburg alumni)

Black improves to 5-1 and remains one game behind Team Red (6-0).  Purple falls to 3-3.

Alyanna Williams led Black with 16 points while Caitlyn Cunningham chipped in 14.  Maddison Haney added 10.

Courtney Brown led Purple with 15 points while Ty Reviere chipped in 13.

Black led this contest wire-to-wire, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and extending their lead to as many as 20 35-15 in the second quarter.

Purple shaved four points off the lead by halftime and trailed 40-24.

In the third quarter, Black opened up a 55-35 lead following an Emily Keehfuss bucket and maintained their 20-point advantage into the fourth.

Brown helped cut the lead to 16 63-47 midway through the final quarter.  Purple however would not score again as Black scored the final six points to seal the 69-47 win.

 Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
