Philly WBB Summer League: Top Four Seeds Advance to Semifinals

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. —  After separating themselves by two games from the rest of the ten teams in the final regular season standings, the top four squads in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League advanced out of the playoff quarterfinals here Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

But the job was was easily done by just two of the four -  the defending champion and fourth-seeded Maroon squad, also known as D2-USciences, which handled fifth-seeded Purple, also known as the D2-Alums of East Stroudsburg, 68-56, while top-seeded Black, also known as D2-Jefferson, put away ninth-seeded Kelly Green, also known as the combination of second-seeded Millersville and D3-Moravian, 87-57.

But second-seeded Red, also known as the combination of D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg, had to hold off a late rally from seventh-seeded Lime Green, also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, before emerging with a 57-53 win, while third-seeded Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, nearly got upset at the finish before eliminating Royal Blue, also known as the combination of D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury 58-56.

On Thursday the four winners will return for the semifinals when Black (8-1) and Maroon (7-2), those two powerful rivals from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, repeat last season’s title matchup at 7 p.m. on Court 1 followed  at 8:15 by Red (8-1) meeting Sky Blue (7-2).

Maroon, which ruined Black’s perfect record in the title game last season, gave Jefferson it’s only loss this summer to date, 73-64, on July 9 after the week-long July 4 holiday break, strengthening from some struggles in the first few weeks of play.

Red beat Sky Blue narrowly, 63-59, on July 18th.

Kelly Green had upset Orange in a scoring festival on Thursday but had its season ended when Black made it a sweep adding to a 70-50 win on June 20, the second night of the regular season.

Maroon, now advancing to its fifth straight summer league semifinals, beat Purple, 63-59, on July 18.

In their first meeting, Red beat Lime Green, 61-52, on July 23 while Sky Blue’s season-ending sweep of Royal Blue included an earlier 74-49 win on July 16.

After five players, all from the same game, hit the magic individual 20-or-more points performance, third best nightly total on the season, in rhe quarterfinals, just one got the job done Tuesday.

Sky Blue’s Anjelai Hayes scored 20 against Royal Blue, helped by shooting 8-for-10 from the line.

While the Thursday matchup of Red and Sky Blue insures a new team in the title round, there is quite a bit of history in the other game between Black and Maroon.

This summer’s result was already mentioned while last year, Maroon’s lone loss was to Black before gaining revenge in the championship.

Last winter in NCAA D2 competition, Maroon and Black beat each other during the season, it was Maroon’s only loss while Black lost just one other game, but Black came back to edge Maroon by a point in overtime in the CACC championship.

Now, here’s Bob with the recaps of Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Recaps:

#3 Sky Blue  58  #6  Royal Blue   56

Third seed Sky Blue (D-II Holy Family) recovered from a flat first quarter and held off a late run by the sixth seed Royal Blue (D-II Kutztown/D-III Salisbury) to earn a 58-56 win and advance to the semi-final of the Philadelphia /Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League Championships.

Anjelai Hayes and Monee Moore reached double figures and were key players down the stretch for Sky Blue.

Hayes scored 20 points while Moore chipped in 16.

Royal placed four players in double figures led by Annie Whalen and Karen Lapkiewicz with 14 apiece.

Casey Remolde added 12 while Alyssa Bondi made three three-point baskets and finished with 11 points.

Royal put the first points on the board and finished the first quarter with 8-0 flourish to lead by 11, 23-12.

Lapkiewicz’s three-ball to open the second quarter pushed the lead to 26-12 before Sky started to chip away at the lead.

Sky clawed within two on a 16-4 run capped by a Moore free throw before Whalen sank a three-pointer to push the lead to five.

Jennifer Kremp’s basket at the buzzer cut Royal’s lead to 33-30 at the half.

Hayes and Moore each sank a pair of free throws to open the third quarter, giving Sky their first lead of the game 34-33 49 seconds into the period.

Two more free throws from Moore capped a 9-2 run to open the quarter, giving Sky a 39-35 lead.

Royal came back to tie the game at 41-41  and reclaimed the lead as Bondi sank three three-pointers in a span of 1:12 to open up a 50-42 advantage with just 1:38 left.

Hayes and Casey Schweitzer scored to pull Sky within four, 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Moore’s basket with 3:05 left in regulation pulled Sky within one 53-52 and following a defensive stop, Hayes sank two free throws with 2:30 left to give Sky a 54-53 lead.

Both teams exchanged baskets and Sky still led 56-55 as the game entered the final minute.

Royal had three opportunities in the final minute to tie or take the lead but was unable to convert.

Forced to foul, Hayes made one of two free throws with 9.1 seconds to give Sky a three-point lead 58-55.

Royal’s last possession resulted in one made free throw as they fell short 58-56.

#1 Black   87   #9 Kelly Green  57

Top seed Black (D-II Jefferson) had little trouble advancing to the semi-finals jumping out to a double digit lead early en route to an 87-57 blowout win over ninth seed Kelly Green (D-II Millersville/D-III Moravian).

Haley Meinel led four players in double figures for Black with 17 points.  Alynna Williams added 15 while Emily Keehfuss chipped in 14.   Sabria Lytes rounded out Black’s double figure scorers with ten points.

Raven James, a Division I player from Villanova University led Kelly Green with 15 points.  Jessica McKenzie and 13 while Mia Leonard and Ali Higgins chipped in 12 and 11 respectively.

Williams opened the game with a three-point basket and it was all Black from there, building a double-digit lead with an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter, 25-12.

Black pushed their lead to 19 midway through the second quarter and held a 44-26 advantage at halftime.

Black outscored Kelly Green 23-11 in the third quarter to lead 67-37.

Kelly opened the fourth quarter with a 12-5 run to cut the lead to 23, 72-49 but that would be as close as they would come as Black finished with an 15-8 spurt to finish with the 30-point win.

#2 Red  57   #7  Lime Green  53

Second seed Red (DII West Chester/D-III Gettysburg) survived a scare from seventh seed Lime Green (D-II Chestnut Hill) as they eked out a 57-53 win to advance to the Thursday’s semi-finals.

Katie Fisher and Leah Johnson led Red with 12 points apiece.  Mary DeSimone added  seven.

Cassie Sebold turned in another solid performance, leading all scorers in the game with 17 points (eight in the final 2:15). Erin Doherty added 12 while Lauren Crim chipped in ten.

Red scored the first five points of the game and led 13-10 before Lime Green put together seven straight points to take a 17-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

Offense was hard to come by in the second quarter as both teams combined to score just nine points with Lime Green taking a 22-17 lead at halftime.

Gabby Troisi opened the second half with a three-ball, cutting the lead to two as Red slowly chipped away, tying the game at 29-29 and then taking a 30-29 lead on a free throw by Avery Bennett with 3:39 left.

Red added five more points to cap an 8-0 flourish and take a 35-29 lead before Crim’s two free throws broke the streak.

Bennett pushed the lead back to six with four straight points and Johnson’s long three pointer as time was expiring gave Red a 42-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Now it was Lime Green’s turn to chip away at the lead.  Doherty cut the Red lead to three 48-45 with a basket with four minutes left and after a Red basket from Carly Rice.

Sebold again made it a one possession game with a basket with 2:15 left , 50-47.

Another Red basket pushed the lead back to five by Sebold again responded first with a basket and then with a free throw to pull her team within two 52-50 with 1:19 left.

Johnson missed two free throws with 47.3 seconds left, giving Lime Green a chance to tie.

Red however produced the defensive stop and Lime was forced to foul.  This time, Johnson made two from the charity stripe with 29 seconds left and then Bennett added another with 14.8 seconds left.   Sebold sank a three-pointer in the final seconds, pulling Lime within two, 55-53.  Rice scored with time expiring to give Red a 57-53 win.

 #4 Maroon 68   #5 Purple  56

Defending league champion and #4 seed Maroon (D-II USciences)  turned up the defense after a sluggish first quarter and eliminated fifth seed Purple (D-II East Stroudsburg alumni) 68-56 to advance to the semi-final round for the fifth consecutive year.

Jess Huber and Isla Brennan led Maroon with 16 points apiece with both players connecting on three three-point buckets.  Taylor Hamm added 11 points while Jordan Vitelli chipped in nine.

Emma Stanfield and Sydney Blum had 12 points apiece to lead Purple while Melissa Poderis chipped in nine.

Blum opened the game with a three-point basket as Purple  jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and closed out the first quarter leading 15-8.

Maroon tightened up the defense as the second quarter opened, holding Purple scoreless for the first five minutes as they went on a 16-0 tear to take a 24-15 lead.

Two free throws from Blum broke the string with 4:53 left in the period.  Purple added two more free throws before getting their first field goal of the quarter with 1:53 left, ending an 8-2 run by Maroon.

Courtney Brown’s three point field goal as the quarter was ending cut Maroon’s lead to 34-24 at halftime.

Huber scored the first five points of the third quarter as Maroon opened a 39-24 lead.

Maroon led by as many as 16 in the period before Purple cut the gap to 12 by the end of the period 51-39.

Dana Bandurick’s two free throws pulled Purple within ten 51-41.

Maroon followed with four straight baskets to take their biggest lead of the game at 59-41 before Tyeca Reviere broke the string with a layup at the 6:23 mark.

Maroon maintained their double digit lead the rest of the way with Purple coming within ten late in the period, 65-55 before both teams closed out the scoring from the free throw line.
