Philly WBB Summer League: Top Four Seeds Advance to Semifinals

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. —  After separating themselves by two games from the rest of the ten teams in the final regular season standings, the top four squads in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League advanced out of the playoff quarterfinals here Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

But the job was was easily done by just two of the four -  the defending champion and fourth-seeded Maroon squad, also known as D2-USciences, which handled fifth-seeded Purple, also known as the D2-Alums of East Stroudsburg, 68-56, while top-seeded Black, also known as D2-Jefferson, put away ninth-seeded Kelly Green, also known as the combination of second-seeded Millersville and D3-Moravian, 87-57.

But second-seeded Red, also known as the combination of D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg, had to hold off a late rally from seventh-seeded Lime Green, also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, before emerging with a 57-53 win, while third-seeded Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, nearly got upset at the finish before eliminating Royal Blue, also known as the combination of D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury 58-56.

On Thursday the four winners will return for the semifinals when Black (8-1) and Maroon (7-2), those two powerful rivals from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, repeat last season’s title matchup at 7 p.m. on Court 1 followed  at 8:15 by Red (8-1) meeting Sky Blue (7-2).

Maroon, which ruined Black’s perfect record in the title game last season, gave Jefferson it’s only loss this summer to date, 73-64, on July 9 after the week-long July 4 holiday break, strengthening from some struggles in the first few weeks of play.

Red beat Sky Blue narrowly, 63-59, on July 18th.

Kelly Green had upset Orange in a scoring festival on Thursday but had its season ended when Black made it a sweep adding to a 70-50 win on June 20, the second night of the regular season.

Maroon, now advancing to its fifth straight summer league semifinals, beat Purple, 63-59, on July 18.

In their first meeting, Red beat Lime Green, 61-52, on July 23 while Sky Blue’s season-ending sweep of Royal Blue included an earlier 74-49 win on July 16.

After five players, all from the same game, hit the magic individual 20-or-more points performance, third best nightly total on the season, in rhe quarterfinals, just one got the job done Tuesday.

Sky Blue’s Anjelai Hayes scored 20 against Royal Blue, helped by shooting 8-for-10 from the line.

While the Thursday matchup of Red and Sky Blue insures a new team in the title round, there is quite a bit of history in the other game between Black and Maroon.

This summer’s result was already mentioned while last year, Maroon’s lone loss was to Black before gaining revenge in the championship.

Last winter in NCAA D2 competition, Maroon and Black beat each other during the season, it was Maroon’s only loss while Black lost just one other game, but Black came back to edge Maroon by a point in overtime in the CACC championship.

Now, here’s Bob with the recaps of Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Recaps:

#3 Sky Blue  58  #6  Royal Blue   56

Third seed Sky Blue (D-II Holy Family) recovered from a flat first quarter and held off a late run by the sixth seed Royal Blue (D-II Kutztown/D-III Salisbury) to earn a 58-56 win and advance to the semi-final of the Philadelphia /Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League Championships.

Anjelai Hayes and Monee Moore reached double figures and were key players down the stretch for Sky Blue.

Hayes scored 20 points while Moore chipped in 16.

Royal placed four players in double figures led by Annie Whalen and Karen Lapkiewicz with 14 apiece.

Casey Remolde added 12 while Alyssa Bondi made three three-point baskets and finished with 11 points.

Royal put the first points on the board and finished the first quarter with 8-0 flourish to lead by 11, 23-12.

Lapkiewicz’s three-ball to open the second quarter pushed the lead to 26-12 before Sky started to chip away at the lead.

Sky clawed within two on a 16-4 run capped by a Moore free throw before Whalen sank a three-pointer to push the lead to five.

Jennifer Kremp’s basket at the buzzer cut Royal’s lead to 33-30 at the half.

Hayes and Moore each sank a pair of free throws to open the third quarter, giving Sky their first lead of the game 34-33 49 seconds into the period.

Two more free throws from Moore capped a 9-2 run to open the quarter, giving Sky a 39-35 lead.

Royal came back to tie the game at 41-41  and reclaimed the lead as Bondi sank three three-pointers in a span of 1:12 to open up a 50-42 advantage with just 1:38 left.

Hayes and Casey Schweitzer scored to pull Sky within four, 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Moore’s basket with 3:05 left in regulation pulled Sky within one 53-52 and following a defensive stop, Hayes sank two free throws with 2:30 left to give Sky a 54-53 lead.

Both teams exchanged baskets and Sky still led 56-55 as the game entered the final minute.

Royal had three opportunities in the final minute to tie or take the lead but was unable to convert.

Forced to foul, Hayes made one of two free throws with 9.1 seconds to give Sky a three-point lead 58-55.

Royal’s last possession resulted in one made free throw as they fell short 58-56.

#1 Black   87   #9 Kelly Green  57

Top seed Black (D-II Jefferson) had little trouble advancing to the semi-finals jumping out to a double digit lead early en route to an 87-57 blowout win over ninth seed Kelly Green (D-II Millersville/D-III Moravian).

Haley Meinel led four players in double figures for Black with 17 points.  Alynna Williams added 15 while Emily Keehfuss chipped in 14.   Sabria Lytes rounded out Black’s double figure scorers with ten points.

Raven James, a Division I player from Villanova University led Kelly Green with 15 points.  Jessica McKenzie and 13 while Mia Leonard and Ali Higgins chipped in 12 and 11 respectively.

Williams opened the game with a three-point basket and it was all Black from there, building a double-digit lead with an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter, 25-12.

Black pushed their lead to 19 midway through the second quarter and held a 44-26 advantage at halftime.

Black outscored Kelly Green 23-11 in the third quarter to lead 67-37.

Kelly opened the fourth quarter with a 12-5 run to cut the lead to 23, 72-49 but that would be as close as they would come as Black finished with an 15-8 spurt to finish with the 30-point win.

#2 Red  57   #7  Lime Green  53

Second seed Red (DII West Chester/D-III Gettysburg) survived a scare from seventh seed Lime Green (D-II Chestnut Hill) as they eked out a 57-53 win to advance to the Thursday’s semi-finals.

Katie Fisher and Leah Johnson led Red with 12 points apiece.  Mary DeSimone added  seven.

Cassie Sebold turned in another solid performance, leading all scorers in the game with 17 points (eight in the final 2:15). Erin Doherty added 12 while Lauren Crim chipped in ten.

Red scored the first five points of the game and led 13-10 before Lime Green put together seven straight points to take a 17-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

Offense was hard to come by in the second quarter as both teams combined to score just nine points with Lime Green taking a 22-17 lead at halftime.

Gabby Troisi opened the second half with a three-ball, cutting the lead to two as Red slowly chipped away, tying the game at 29-29 and then taking a 30-29 lead on a free throw by Avery Bennett with 3:39 left.

Red added five more points to cap an 8-0 flourish and take a 35-29 lead before Crim’s two free throws broke the streak.

Bennett pushed the lead back to six with four straight points and Johnson’s long three pointer as time was expiring gave Red a 42-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Now it was Lime Green’s turn to chip away at the lead.  Doherty cut the Red lead to three 48-45 with a basket with four minutes left and after a Red basket from Carly Rice.

Sebold again made it a one possession game with a basket with 2:15 left , 50-47.

Another Red basket pushed the lead back to five by Sebold again responded first with a basket and then with a free throw to pull her team within two 52-50 with 1:19 left.

Johnson missed two free throws with 47.3 seconds left, giving Lime Green a chance to tie.

Red however produced the defensive stop and Lime was forced to foul.  This time, Johnson made two from the charity stripe with 29 seconds left and then Bennett added another with 14.8 seconds left.   Sebold sank a three-pointer in the final seconds, pulling Lime within two, 55-53.  Rice scored with time expiring to give Red a 57-53 win.

 #4 Maroon 68   #5 Purple  56

Defending league champion and #4 seed Maroon (D-II USciences)  turned up the defense after a sluggish first quarter and eliminated fifth seed Purple (D-II East Stroudsburg alumni) 68-56 to advance to the semi-final round for the fifth consecutive year.

Jess Huber and Isla Brennan led Maroon with 16 points apiece with both players connecting on three three-point buckets.  Taylor Hamm added 11 points while Jordan Vitelli chipped in nine.

Emma Stanfield and Sydney Blum had 12 points apiece to lead Purple while Melissa Poderis chipped in nine.

Blum opened the game with a three-point basket as Purple  jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and closed out the first quarter leading 15-8.

Maroon tightened up the defense as the second quarter opened, holding Purple scoreless for the first five minutes as they went on a 16-0 tear to take a 24-15 lead.

Two free throws from Blum broke the string with 4:53 left in the period.  Purple added two more free throws before getting their first field goal of the quarter with 1:53 left, ending an 8-2 run by Maroon.

Courtney Brown’s three point field goal as the quarter was ending cut Maroon’s lead to 34-24 at halftime.

Huber scored the first five points of the third quarter as Maroon opened a 39-24 lead.

Maroon led by as many as 16 in the period before Purple cut the gap to 12 by the end of the period 51-39.

Dana Bandurick’s two free throws pulled Purple within ten 51-41.

Maroon followed with four straight baskets to take their biggest lead of the game at 59-41 before Tyeca Reviere broke the string with a layup at the 6:23 mark.

Maroon maintained their double digit lead the rest of the way with Purple coming within ten late in the period, 65-55 before both teams closed out the scoring from the free throw line.

Philly WBB Summer League: Kelly Green and Lime Green Advance to Complete Quarterfinals Field

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — One upset by seed number and another near-one that would have brought 10th-seeded Golden Sun its first win of the season marked the opening playoff round doubleheader Thursday night in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

After seventh-seeded Lime Green, also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, rallied to edge the 10th-seeded D3-Arcadia group, 65-62, an explosive second game saw ninth-seeded Kelly Green, primarily composed of D2 Millersville and D3-Moravian, top eighth-seeded Orange, also known as D3 Ursinus, 110-88, in a game in which five players scored 20 or more points, the third-most productive overall night for individuals on the season.

The two winners completed this comingTuesday night’s quarterfinals field that will see a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 7 p.m. on Courts 1 and 2 to advanced four teams to Thursday’s semifinals.

If Golden Sun (0-9) had won, as the lowest surviving seed, they would have faced top seeded Black (8-1), also known as D2-Jefferson U., in the first game on Court 1.

But the win by Kelly Green (1-8) sends them to meet Black, though had Orange (2-7) won, it would have been the same matchup because Lime Green (3-6) winning the first game automatically locked them into Tuesday’s 8:15 p.m. second game on Court 1 against Red (8-1), also known as the combo D2-West Chester/D3 Gettysburg group.

Orange had beaten Kelly Green on the regular season schedule in another scoring fest 105-97 while Lime Green made it a sweep of Golden Sun off the earlier 72-45 win.

Previously set by the final standings of the nine-game schedule that was completed Tuesday night, on Court 2 at 7 p.m. third-seeded Sky Blue (7-2), also known as D2-Holy Family, will meet sixth-seed Royal Blue (4-5), also known as the combo of D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury.

The second game on Court 2 at 8:15 p.m. will see fourth-seeded Maroon (7-2), also known as the D2-defending champion USciences group, meeting fifth-seeded Purple, also known as the D2-East Stroudsburg alumni group.

During the season, Black beat Kelly Green, 70-50, Red beat Lime Green, 61-52, Sky Blue beat Royal Blue 74-49, and and Maroon edged Purple, 63-59.

The winners advance to next Thursday’s semifinals on Court 1 at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The championship is Tuesday, August 6 at 7 p.m.

Bob has all the details of both games from Thursday coming up below in the recaps.

Individual Performance

Samantha Brusha out of Millersville and Abington High  turned in her second 40-point performance and possibly a league first 40 point playoff mark in leading Kelly Green over Orange, while the second in the high scoring Kelly Green trio saw Villanova’s Raven James nail seven three-pointers on the way to 31 points.

On a poignant note, earlier in the day James joined her Wildcats classmates for part of the tributes to Father Anthony “Mickey” Genovese, the Villanova women’s basketball chaplain, who passed away suddenly Sunday.

“I had to do it for Father,” James said here after her performance.

Kelly Green’s Kate Seeman out of Rochester and Lenape High had 25 points propelled by three three-balls.

Orange’s Alana Davidson out of Davidson and New Hope Solebury had 29 points while Krista Hamill out of Franklin & Marshall who had a league high 49 during the season scored 22 for Orange.

 Recaps:

#7 Lime Green  65    #10 Golden Sun  62

Cassie Sebold scored six of Lime Green’s (D-2 Chestnut Hill College) final eight points as they rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Golden Sun (D3 Arcadia University) 65-62 in the opening game of the Philadelphia/Suburban women’s Basketball League Playoffs.

Lime Green will advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, July 30 where they will face #2 seed Team Red (D-2 West Chester/D-3 Gettysburg).

Four consecutive three-point baskets by Golden Sun (two apiece from Taylor Dunn and Joelle Bridges) erased a slim one point Lime lead and gave Golden Sun a 54-43 advantage heading into the final period.

A traditional three-point play from Bri Hewlett and a three-ball from Lindsay Lane quickly cut the Golden Sun lead to five 54-49.

Halle Robinson’s basket pushed the lead back to seven before Lime Green went into repeat mode.

Hewlett converted another “and-1” and another three-ball followed- this one by Lauren Crim to pull Lime Green within one 56-55.

The two teams exchanged baskets before Sebold took over with 2:30 left in the game.

She gave Lime Green the lead with a three-point bucket and followed with another basket to extend the lead to three.

Crim added two free throws with 12.6 seconds left to make it a two-possession game at 64-59.

Dunn brought Golden Sun back within two, 64-62 before Sebold’s free throw with 4.5 seconds sealed the win.

An exciting first quarter did see Golden Sun jump out to a 14-3 lead mostly on the hot shooting of Sami Falencki who sank three three-pointers in the opening run.

Lime Green rallied with a 14-2 run over the final four minutes to take a 17-16 lead.

Hewlett’s three-pointer to open the second quarter pushed Lime’s lead to four before Golden Sun ran off six straight points to retake the lead.

The lead oscillated back and forth for the remainder of the quarter and into the third with eight lead changes and six ties before Golden Sun’s 12-0 explosion to close out the third quarter.

Crim and Hewlett led all scorers with 19 points apiece while Sebold added 16 to pace the Lime Green offense.

Dunn sank six three-pointers en route to a team high 18 points  while Bridges added ten to lead Golden Sun.  Falencki added nine.

 #9 Kelly Green 110    #8  Orange  88

Samantha Brusha dropped what might be a Summer League playoff record 40 points as ninth seed Kelly Green (Millersville/Moravian) upset eighth seed Orange (Ursinus) 110-88 in the playoff opening round nightcap.

Kelly Green will now play top seed Team Black (D2 Jefferson) in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.

The two teams entered Thursday night’s playoff contest with just five players apiece with the hope that no player fouled out or got hurt. (more on this later).

Brusha was one of three Kelly Green players to reach 20 points as teammates Raven James scored 31 with seven three-point baskets and Kate Seeman added 26 (3 three-pointers).  Mia Leonard rounded out the scoring with 13.

Orange also had two players reach 20 points as Alana Davidson scored 29 and Kristin Hamill added 22.  Courtney Hardy had 16 and Marissa Morano added 13.

Kelly Green led the contest wire-to-wire jumping out to a nine-point lead at the end of one quarter 30-21.

Things got interesting as the second quarter progressed as Green started to pull away taking a 21-point lead when an injury late in the quarter to one of the Orange five  turned the game into a 4-on-4 contest.

Green led 62-43 at the half with Brusha scoring 25 and James adding 23 (48 points combined).

The two teams played 4-on-4 the rest of the game.

Orange used an 8-2 run early in the third quarter to close within 15, 68-53 before Kelly Green pushed the lead back up to 24, 87-63 after three quarters.

Kelly Green increased the lead to as many as 32 in the fourth quarter before Orange closed out the game on an 19-9 run.

  Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry Roads heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.

Philly WBB Summer League: Black (Jefferson) Re-Claims Top Seed For Playoffs

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — For the second straight year, Team Black, also known as D2-Jefferson, will head into the playoffs as the top seed in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Of course, when that happened 12 months ago, Black had an unbeaten record in the ten-team league only to be felled in the championship by the Rams’ top winter rival in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, USciences, known here as Team Maroon.

Those two continued to go at in their NCAA season, both earning Top 10 rankings and beating each other once followed by Jefferson gaining a one-point win in the CACC title game in overtime.

USciences got to host the Regional in which the Rams were eliminated in the first round and the host Devils one round later.

This summer, more teams came into the mix here with Team Red, composed primarily out of D 2 West Chester and D3 Gettysburg, pulling an early upset of Maroon  and going unbeaten until Black won last  Thursday in overtime to deprive Red of a top seed clincher and gaining the top spot tiebreak if they finished knotted.

Sly Blue, also known as D2 Holy Family, also showed strength with an early one-point win over Maroon, which then became more powerful down the stretch upsetting Black with its one loss.

Thus, heading into Tuesday’s final five-game nightly card, in a rarity, the playoff picture unlike past seasons was very much in focus, to the point that for the second time in less than a week everything that was in place before the action got under way remained as such with just two two-way ties easily settled on head-to-head outcomes.

Completing the standings in a rarity after the first place tie between Black and Red, with Black (8-1) getting the top spot, and third place tie between Sky Blue (7-2) and Maroon going to Sky Blue, the rest of the finish had six teams in stand-alone spots with each just one game in front of the team behind it from five all the way down to 10th-place Golden Sun (0-9), which was winless but the D3-Arcadia group put up a very good fight in several games.

Colleague Bob Heller is back with the five-game details but as far as the implications, the top five teams all won and the bottom five, obviously, all lost, just like last week.

Black’s 61-53 win over Royal Blue (4-5) wrapped up the top spot, while Red’s 61-52 win over Lime Green (3-6), also known as D2 Chestnut Hill, was good enough to take second.

Sky Blue and Maroon stayed tied for third with Sky Blue producing a 68-55 win over Kelly Green (1-8), a combination of D2 Millersville and D3 Moravian, to cash in its earlier 56-55 win over Maroon, which then landed fourth following it’s 100-42 thumping over Orange (2-7), also known as D3 Ursinus.

Purple (5-4), also known as the D2-East Stroudsburg alumni group, topped Golden Sun 72-46 to take fifth, one game ahead of Royal Blue (4-5), which despite its loss to Black, took sixth for the final bye position into next Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

The upper six already had their spots clinched and the lower four teams which will open the playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m. in a doubleheader on Court 1, already had their seeds and pairings decided with seventh-seeded Lime Green (3-6), the D2 Chestnut Hill group, set to play 10th-seeded Golden Sun in the first game, followed by eighth-seeded Orange (2-7) meeting ninth-seeded Kelly Green (1-8) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1.

Gaining the Personal Standard

Again, as has been the case all summer except the previous two nights, the ability to score 20 or more points was relatively low key with just three players busting the barrier.

Maroon’s Irisa Ye, had 26 points fueled by six three-balls, in her bid to produce another 20 or more night, while Alana Cardona out of national semifinalist  Indiana Pa (IUP) and Souderton High, scored 23 points, her first night to make the milestone, and Sky Blue’s Dana Dockery also scored 23 out of Holy Family after hitting the mark earlier.

Setting The Seeds

As mentioned, records caused stand-alone spots from fifth through 10th in order Purple (5-4), Royal Blue (4-5), Lime Green (3-6), Orange (2-7), Kelly Green (1-7), which returned from Thursday’s forfeit loss to Royal Blue, and Golden Sun (0-9).

The forfeit, when Kelly Green couldn’t field enough players by the 15-minute grace deadline on 7 p.m. starts, was the only one across the June 18-July 23 two-nights a week schedule, which went dark for the July 4 holiday period.

The top, as mentioned, has Black (8-1) first off its 67-62 overtime win against Red (8-1) after both teams were tied 60-60 at the end of regulation.

Sky Blue (7-2) got the tie-break and third spot off fourth-seed Maroon (7-2) with its 56-55 win over the Devils on June 25th.

Six games pretty much set the top of the standings with Red’s 73-65 upset of Maroon on opening night, the same evening in which Black beat Sky Blue 74-48, to lead the timeline.

Then came the aforementioned Sky Blue win over Maroon, followed by Maroon’s 73-64 win over Black on July 9 after the break.

Two nights later Red hit Sky Blue with its second loss, 52-46, and then came the Black win in overtime over Red.

Looking Ahead

In the opening playoffs doubleheader to advance the remaining two teams to the quarterfinals, in their previous meetings, 10th-seed Golden Sun fell to seventh-seed Lime Green, 72-45, while eighth-seeded Orange in that scoring fest got one of its two wins, beating Kelly Green 107-95.

Kelly Green two nights later also gave up triple digits in a 103-53 loss to Team Red.

Two quarterfinal games are set for next Tuesday when No. 3 Sky Blue (7-2) meets No. 6 Royal Blue (4-5) at 7 p.m. on Court 2 before fourth-seeded Maroon (7-2) meets fifth-seeded Purple (5-4) at 8:15 on Court 2.

Sky Blue beat Royal Blue 74-49 while Maroon edged Purple 63-59.

Black will be on Court 1 at 7 p.m. to meet the lowest surviving seed from Thursday’s opener while Red is on the court at 8:15 p.m. to meet the highest surviving seed.

The semifinals on Court 1 for a doubleheader are a week from Thursday at 7 p.m. with the surviving two teams meeting at 7 p.m. on Court 1 on August 6 for the championship.

Now here’s Bob with the details of Tuesday’s games and your Guru notes this post is being put together on the overnight in 30th Street Station before hopping Amtrak this time, since was cheap- enough, to get back to Mohegan for an 11:30 a.m. game with the first-place Connecticut Sun hosting the first regular season meeting with the WNBA New York Liberty.

Wednesday is the last day before the All-Star break.

RECAPS:

Black 61,  Royal Blue   53

Team Black (also known as Division II Jefferson University) clinched the top seed for the upcoming league playoffs with a 61-53 win over Team Royal Blue (Kutztown/Salisbury).

Black had four players with eight or more points led by Sabria Lytes and Alexandra Warren who had 11 points apiece.

Haley Meinel added 10 points while Brigit Arcidiacono chipped in eight.

Alyssa Bondi paced Royal with 14 points while Annie Whalen and Karen Lapkiewicz added 12 and ten respectively.

Black jumped out to a 7-2 lead only to see Royal Bluer surge back and tie the game twice, first at 10-10 following an 8-3 spurt and then again at 13-13.  Black closed out the quarter with nine straight points to lead 22-134 and increased their lead to double digits by halftime 36-25.

The two teams played an even third quarter with Black still on top by 11 heading into the final stanza.

Lapkiewicz and Bondi brought Royal within seven, 47-40 with baskets to open the fourth quarter before Black went on a 12-3 run to take their biggest lead at 59-43 with 4:05 remaining.

Royal made one last push with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Bondi three-balls to close within eight 59-51 with just under three minutes remaining.

This would be as close as they would come as the two teams exchanged points in the final 90 seconds to keep the gap at eight points.

Black finishes the regular season with an 8-1 record while Royal Blue will enter the playoffs as the #6 seed with a 4-5 record.

 Red  61,  Lime Green 52

Team Red (West Chester/Gettysburg) produced a huge third quarter run to pull away from a tenacious Lime Green (Chestnut Hill College) team earning a 61-52 win to finish the regular season with one loss and clinch the #2 seed for the upcoming league playoffs

Red placed three in double figures led by Leah Johnson’s 15 points. Carly Rice added 14 while Avery Bennett chipped in 12.

Alana Cardona led all scorers with 23 points and was the lone Lime Green player in double figures.  Brianna Cullen had eight points.

Red jumped out to a 12-8 lead after one quarter of play with neither team adding any points to their score in the final five minutes.

Lime Green used a 7-2 run capped by two Cardona baskets to take their first lead of the game 17-14 before  back-to-back three-balls from Johnson and Becca Margolis put Red back on top 20-17.

The lead changed hands once more in the second quarter as Cardona converted back-to-back traditional three-point plays to give Lime Green a 25-22 lead.

Lindsay Lane made the score 27-22 before consecutive baskets from Gabby Troisi cut the Line Green lead to one 27-26.

Cullen’s basket gave Lime a 29-26 lead at halftime.

Lime Green opened up an eight point lead midway through the third quarter, 41-33 before Red came alive and went on a 16-0 tear erasing the deficit and taking a 47-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 6-2 run to open the fourth quarter pushed Red’s lead to ten, 53-43.

Lime Green pulled within seven late, 59-52 but that would be as close as they would get.

Lime Green finishes the regular season with a 3-6 record and will play in the opening round playoff games on Thursday as the #7 seed.

Red finishes with an 8-1 record, equaling Black’s mark but will be the #2 seed by virtue of their loss to Black.

Sky Blue 68,  Kelly Green 55

Sky Blue (Division II Holy Family University) cruised to a 68-55 win over Kelly Green to clinch the #3 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Dana Dockery led four players in double figures for the Sky Blue squad with 23 points.

Megan Hughes added 15 points while Casey Schweitzer and Anjalai Hayes chipped in 12 and 10 points respectively.

Kate Seeman led Kelly Green with 15 points.  Samantha Brusha added 14 while Raven James chipped in 13.

Seven lead changes highlighted the first quarter as Sky Blue emerged on top after ten minutes of action 19-15.

Sky used a 13-2 run in the second quarter to push the lead to double digits, 32-17 with Dockery netting six points during the surge.

The Sky Blue squad took a 39-22 lead at halftime.

Schweitzer’s basket early in the third quarter pushed Sky’s lead to its biggest margin, 44-24, and the team kept the double digit advantage through the rest of the second half.

Kelly Green closed the gap though in the fourth quarter using a 16-9 spurt to cut lead to ten 68-55 before one last three-ball from Sky made the final margin 68-55.

Sky Blue finishes the regular season with a 7-2 mark and will be the third seed in the playoffs based on the head-to-head win over Maroon who also finished with a 7-2 mark.

Kelly Green will enter the playoffs as the #9 seed with a 1-8 final regular season record.

Maroon  100, Orange  42

Team Maroon (Division II University of the Sciences) produced the largest margin of victory in a league game this season with a 100-42 blowout over Team Orange (Division III Ursinus College).

Maroon becomes the second team to reach the century mark in a league game this season, joining Orange who scored 107 in a win over Kelly Green two weeks ago.

The Maroon squad clinches the #4 seed in the upcoming playoffs with the win.

The Maroon squad again rained down three-point baskets with 17 buckets beyond the arc, marking the fifth time in nine league games that they have made ten or more in a single contest.

Irisa Ye had six of those three-point goals en route to a 26 point effort, the highest point total on the night.

Four other players reached double figures for Maroon with Jordan Vitelli knocking down four three-balls and finishing with 16 points; Taylor Hamm adding 13 points (7 FT’s); Kendal Keyes 11 ( three three’s) and Kerry Patterson 11 points (one three-ball).

Lydia Konstanzer and Alana Davidson had 11 points apiece for Orange.

Orange kept the game close in the first quarter forcing three ties and three lead changes.

The last lead change came in the final seconds as Konstanzer hit two free throws to give Orange a 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter.

Ye’s basket to start the second quarter gave Maroon the lead back and opened the floodgates as they outscored Orange 36-5 over the ten minute quarter to take a 54-24 lead at the half.

Maroon extended the lead to 83-36 after three quarters and reached the century mark on Hamm’s put back in the final 20 seconds of play, making the final score 100-42

Maroon, like Sky Blue, finished the regular season with a 7-2 mark.

They will be the fourth seed as Sky won the head-to-head match-up earlier in the season.

Orange finishes with a 2-7 mark and will be the #8 seed in the upcoming playoffs.

 Purple 72 , Golden Sun  46

Team Purple (East Stroudsburg alumni) broke open a tie game in the fourth quarter as they held Golden Sun (Arcadia University) to just two points in the final stanza to cruise to a 72-46 win and clinch the #5 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Purple placed four players in double figures with Madison Tamburini leading the way with 15 points.

Dana Bandurick and Brady Wassell had 13 apiece while Sydney Blum added 12.

Julia Makowski led Golden Sun with 13 points while Sami Falencki chipped in nine.

Purple jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the opening quarter but Golden Sun would not back away, continuing to play hard and closing the gap with an 11-7 run to end the first quarter down 22-17.

The Golden Sun squad continue to chip away at the lead, outscoring Purple 10-6 in the second quarter to trail by one 28-27 at the half.

Asya Alba gave Golden Sun their first lead since 3-0 in the first quarter with a free throw early on, breaking a 30-30 tie.

Bandurick followed with a basket to give Purple the lead again at 32-31.

Purple increased their margin to five on several occasions in the third quarter before Golden sun went on an 8-2 run , capped by a Makowski bucket to retake the lead at 44-43.

A Purple free throw tied the game going into the fourth quarter.

The floodgates opened in the fourth quarter as Purple scored the first 19 points of the quarter to lead 63-44 before Makowski sank two free throws to break the run.

Purple added nine more points after the free throws, outscoring Golden Sun 28-2 in the quarter to earn a 72-46 win.

Purple will be the #5 seed with a 5-4 regular season mark.  Golden Sun enters the playoffs as the #10 seed with a 0-9 mark.
