Guru Day 25 Mon Post Hip Op Report: Steady As I Go

Guru Day 25 Mon Post Hip Op Report: Simple day with cane though again brief moments did some steps without though was in my hands off ground for quick support if needed.

By default because in terms what open later on Menorial Day back to Miller’s, zingers are 6.00 something on Mondays, and NBA game 7 on the screen.

Tuesday will be family operation No. 2 as brother-in-law Perry gets his knee done.

Will say been killing it on crossword games on the phone while paying attention to the loop.

That’s it at the moment — Guru.

Guru Day 24 Sun Post Hip Op Report: Eye on the Prize

Guru Day 24 Sunday Post Hip-Op Report: Thinking of perhaps setting up the macbook somewhere in next day or so.

In my strides with the cane take brief steps lifting off the ground to move under my total own power.

Several times been able to bend down to get stuff that preciously needed to use the grabber.

Tonight another short ride-share venture to dine at Miller’s Ale House at nearby Plymouth Meeting Mall at mid-evening.

In the sports world Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist played a few more WNBA minutes in Dallas’ first loss of the year 94-88 at Chicago.

Defending champion Vegas 94-73 keeps rolling after whomping Minn. The Aces 4-0 Lynx 0-4.

Indy gets its first win topping Atlanta 90-87, both teams 1-2.

The Celtics in the NBA are now one win away in Miami series from replicating the 2004 MLB Red Sox 0-3 erasure to top the Yankees. - Guru

Guru Day 23 Sat Post Hip Op Report: More Progress

Guru Day 23 Saturday Post Hip Op Report: Another day of sort-of independency, cane only, took a lyft both ways late afternoon down to the Fayette Oyster House & Grill in Conshohocken.

Salute to memorial day weekend.

Now mobile enough anyone want to do lunch or dinner out up here - hq Plymouth Meeting - or just visit - just note on reply.

Would call the pain level 1-3 range and short times can briefly be without anything but not going to rush this.

Thanks to the many of you been noting the reports. - Guru

Guru Day 22 Fri Post Hip Op Report: A Move Toward Normalcy

Guru Day 22 Friday Post Hip Op Report: This time three weeks ago yours truly was several hours out of the right hip replacement surgery, the effects of the sleep inducement wearing off etc.

Most of Friday was just cane use around inside the apartment.

But as the early evening hour hit, with no one around today, though was tempted to order in, the Guru made the bold move to get a lyft and shot up to Phil’s tavern where the Guru was still walker exclusive when visited the Blue Bell establishment with Will Bill one week ago.

Pain-wise was minimal though having sat a long time when finished, got up easy enough but the leg felt stiff likely due perhaps it is swollen but expected to fade away.

As walked it did loosen up. But we can chalk up today as marker key step forward on the recovery road to normalcy. - Guru

Guru Day 21 Post Hip Op Surgery Report: Week 3 End Features Dinner With Summer League Commissioner

Guru Day 21 Thu Post Hip Op Report: A total cane day late afternoon which completes week 3 after the Friday surgery.

Brother-in-law Perry fetched yours truly to visit the cardiologist for an ekg. Blood pressure pills will continue since the read was in the 140 range.

The surgery leg is swollen but considered part of the after and expected to go down with time and walking.

Then was dropped nearby on Bethlehem Pike to Scoogi’s where joined by summer league and camera shy commish David Kessler. (Action shot below or twitter for those reading on the blog).

The league will have eight teams D2-3 plus graduate players (two are 40 who registered) which means just two sets of doubleheaders tues and thurs starting 630 pm, week off July 4, night one is middle next month, exact date to come, seven games per team, then one and done quarterfinals, semifinals, final, ending late July.

Then it was back to the apartment to write the daily update with other news worth noting.

WNBA wins late nite from west saw defending champ Vegas down Los Angeles while game 3 for Phoenix btought first win playing Minnesota.

In the NBA Boston extended the series to 3-2 beating Miami second straight.

That’s it till Friday. -Guru.

Guru Day 20 Wed Post Hip Op Report: Getting Over the Hump on Hump Day

Guru Day 20 Wed Hip Op Recovery Report: Nice number reached on a hump day of the week to say clearly starting to move over the hump.

More movement inside the apartment was with the cane rather than the walker.

Late afternoon took the one block length of bldg stroll and then sat in a little bench area for a while.

If asked by those inclined on 1-10 would call post surg pain 2-4 but trend toward low area.

To compare: on imediate post surg days when had to get out if bed to stand the move had my whole life flash past whereas now its a very quick wince plus bed is high.

However ordered out again - this time from shake shack - burger, fries, bw shake, and actually used the dining table as opposed the original setup chair with a tv table in living room.

Thursday is going to bring late afternoon follow-up to heart/bp doc/ - the rothman surgery followup still several weeks away - and a dine out after.

Sad to hear of rocker Tina Turner passing today.

Stay tuned — Guru

Guru Day 19 Tues Post Hip Op Report: Raising Cane

Guru Day 19 Tue Post Hip Op Report: Action shots below with sister Annette Swartz - If reading on the blog they were with the twitter link to here.

Major progress today. Early afternoon though she had walker as standby made it out the apartment up and back the walk and back inside using just the cane and later in early evening repeated jaunt with no one around.

Clear pain level drop overall and especially from last sat on too low a bench to go from stand/sit at softball game.

Holding a nice door dash credit as a birthday gift from the nieces and nephew ordered tandoori chicken from nearby Nirvana.

That’s the news today other than elsewhere WNBA had its biggest video viewing opening weekend number in 11 years.

Special shout outs to summer league commish David Kessler and Local AAU Blue Star/Philly Belles honcho Mike Flynn who in having previously undergone similar procedures have been able to gauge where yours truly is in the recovery period. — Guru

Guru Day 18 Monday Post Hip Op Report: Progress Continues Plus News Items

Guru Day 18 Mon Post Hip Surgery Report: Short chronicle today. Pain level dropped somewhat.

Hiked around inside the apt - planned to try a short solo stroll outside with cane but it got late.

So much for the grumbling over Friday late start for the Phoenix/Griner game at LA though earlier might have still been bigger than the boffo TV number reported by the WNBA.

Guru Day 17 Sun Post Hip Surgery Report: The Cane Can Be Used in Some Scenarios

Guru Day 17 Sunday Post Hip Surgery: Once again some diversions one sad one glad.

A little while ago saw the email from Rowan informing of the sudden death Saturday night of women’s basketball coach Demetrius Poles.

It’s been a rough week out there in the sports world.

It appears the attempted link to Rowan’s page didn’t work so just google rowan women’s basketball to read the notice.

On the up side the WNBA opening weekend was boffo, almost midseason form, spewing a myriad of coverage, by the way the Inquirer’s Jonathan Tannenwald was all over it this weekend.

Nice start by the Connecticut Sun, nice opener Washington Mystics, Nice 45-point explosion from Breanna Stewart in NY’s comeback win over Indiana after the Friday loss in DC, great return to the court by Phoenix’s Brittany Griner, Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist though minutes limited played in Dallas’ opening night win.

Returning to the ongoing narrative here soon after Will Bill left to return to Knoxville the Guru did an internal room to room tour with just the cane and managed well.

It’s not time yet to ditch the walker but scenarios are added in case anyone wants to visit and also wants to dine up here.

Later in the afternoon took an extended stroll with the walker outside - action shots below with great niece jayda - the softball star on Saturday - and sister’s two dogs Lulu and Chewy.

Photos on twitter if you got here by the link.

Then dined in late afternoon and now finished with the report for you all. — Guru.

Guru Sat Day 16 Post Hip Surgery Report: Progress Continues

Guru Day 16 Sat Post Hip Op Report: Early Saturday went to nearby park with Wilbill to watch great niece Jayda play softball.

Then off to the nearby Oyster House and then to sister who returned from their trip.

Was only 3 minutes but Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist made her WNBA debut in an opening win by Dallas over Atlanta.

Sunday Will Bill heads home to Knoxville having done yeoman job keeping Guru functional.

That’s the basics for today — Guru

Guru Day 15 Fri Post Hip Surgery Report: Eventful Days Elsewhere, Continue Progress Here

Guru Day Day 15 Fri Post Hip-Surgery Report.

Before continuing on a night the WNBA opens and learning the great football player Jim Brown passed away, would like to acknowledge the word 24 hours earlier of the passing  of 72-year-old Ted Silary, the great chronicler at the Bulletin, the Daily News and then building his own web site —an enormous encyclopedia of Philadelphia High School Sports.

Years ago the great Villanova wbb coach Harry Perretta in a speech quoted someone saying, “You may not know how many lives your life may truly impact.”

Ted never worked because what he did was pure love and in his case that function impacted numbers in the quantum register.

He will be missed greatly and if you didnt know him besides the many that did please read all the tributes out there and stories to get a full appreciation.

As for how the Guru day went once emerged and dressed,  it began late afternoon with another walker hike up the one-block lenth of the apartment building in Plymouth Meeting and then     back down.

Next climbed onto weeklong guest Willbill’s rental to check out Saturday’s sites of two softball games played in Miles Park by great niece Alex and later in Cedar Grove by great niece Jayda for potential attending possibilities.

Then guided Will, a longtime photographer in Pat Summitt’s program at Tennessee on a jaunt first revealing he was driving on the main drag of UConn wbb coach Geno Auriemma’s formative years in Norristown.

Then past King of Prussia mall to a brief tour of Valley Forge Park and on thru the Main Line towns along Lancaster Ave. unknowingly reaching Villanova just as graduation exercise had ended at the football stadium.

It was now dinnertime so off to Blue Bell and another Guru go-to at Phil’s Tavern then back here.

A shot from Phil’s was on twitter.

That’s it at the moment - Guru

Guru Day 14 Thu Hip Surgery Recovery: Return to dine out

Guru Day 14 Thu Hip Surgery Recovery: Mid afternoon extended the Apt Walk (with some speed) to return on the far inner path in front of bldg units opposite Guru hq.

We then got into the Will Bill rental to explore best access to softball field Guru great niece playing Saturday.

Guru then navigated tour thru Chestnut Hill across Gresheim Drive and onto Lincoln Drive thru Manayunk Main Street and over to Conshohocken where after calling ahead for a setup it was a celebratory return to the Fayette Street Oyster House & Grill happy hour. (Action shot with yours truly, plus Will Bill and waitress Kaylee below and one from today’s walk. Note blog readers will find photos on twitter, facebook & Linkdn.).

Good luck to the WNBA as the new season launches Friday with newest Philly performer - overall No.3 pick to the Dallas Wings -Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist. — Guru

Guru Day 13 Wed Post Hip Surgery Report: Return to Outdoors

Guru Wed Day 13 Post-Hip Surgery Report: It was one week ago day 6 after the renovation so to speak that Jefferson said time to depart.

Seven days later with visiting guest Will Bill early afternoon started simple enough with an outdoor stroll (and roll with walker) along the apartment complex (see photo below or with the tweet if reading on the blog.)

Then your Guru got ambitious with him having cleared the mailbox the photo camera card had arrived for the driver’s license renewal) The last time the actual license came from online application.

Having looked at a photo of the Norristown venue steps to use weren’t a factor so why not head up there. A small detour first to see down in Conshohocken if the parking lot next to the Fayette Street Oyster House & Grill was in play - its private - and then to the driver’s license place where the wait was short.

Note to Jim Swan if reading on facebook - while waiting for the car after we were done a guy outside the place struck up a conversation and he was your publisher in your pre-inky days up here.

Then we took a drive to check the geography of Scoogi’s on Bethlehem Pike. Plus it offered extended sitting time following the original walk.

Then returned to home base and Will headed up to King of Prussia to pick up dinner items and stop at Apple cause his ipad wasnt charging.

Knowing that the Guru face him his iPad which stopped charging late feb causing exclusive surviving with the iPhone and some MacBook Pro.

Good news. Learned AppleCare still alive so iPad will be sent out and replaced with new unit -same (2020) model. And the sym card was rescued.

So that’s your news and while a deep ache still there the pain level is much lower than a week ago. - Guru

Guru Day12 Tues Post Hip Op report: A Visitor Arrives

Guru Tues Day 12 Post Hip Op: Sister and brother-in-law made it motoring to Elon for an event.

Made another internal walking trip inside apt and then rested afternoon. Willbill made it from Knoxville arrived 630 and just prior Guru switched today from sweatpants to reg with the belt.

After Willbill embedded, we ordered deli via one of the feed services.

Wednesday will attempt to do a couple outdoor walking block length of this bldg on the inner path.

That’s the daily news for now. - Guru

Guru Day 11 Post Hip Surgery: Interesting Week Ahead

Guru Report Mon-Day 11 Post Hip Surgery- Quiet day of self-working rehab - for a short while sat on sofa and watched TV.

Meanwhile by coincidence sister and brother-in-law on previous commitment out of town rest of the week though nieces are nearby.

But longtime colleague and friend William “Willbill” Ewart was ready to help the back-to-normal effort arriving here from Knoxville late Tues afternoon through Sunday to help yours truly ramp up the walking drills inside and out with the walker and whatever else so perhaps by next week return to just cane for a stretch on the move back to normalcy.

That’s it today, as usual will still be awake for some time. Thanks to the Phillies for late start west coast in Frisco. -Guru

Guru Post Hip Surg Sun Day 10: Return to Outdoors

Guru Hip Op Recovery Day-10 Sun: Writing at 8 pm but will be up the usual long hour unless dose off unknowingly.

Mid-afternoon got dressed again - got fetched - went to nearby niece’s for fam mother’s day - the original moms watching from above.

Got there around 3 and seated comfortably outside  to dine while the local NBA team on the big TV screen uncomfortably ended its season.

Got back here little while ago to post this and get into nighttime mode.

Like said wide awake for any 1-1 communication launched from your side. Was first outside day not counting return home since day 1 of the procedure. For those of you who comment on posts consider every one liked even if didnt mark it.

In world of wbb, seeing Canadian coverage WNBA Toronto it appears the media comp coupon canadian or us value is the most ever seen college or pro though one of my way back colleagues on the scene feel free to verify.

Of course some actual straight feeds have been value equal.  The chocolate marshmallow dipping fountain in early WNBA Conn Sun days still comes up quickly when some wax nostalgia. -Guru

The Guru Report: New WNBA Playing Rules

Here are the changes from the league - Mel Greenberg

KEY RULES CHANGES FOR 2023 SEASON
– Coach’s Challenge to Debut in 2023 –
Modifications Made to Out of Bounds Call Reviews; Transition Take Foul Rule,
Resumption of Play Procedure; Bench Conduct

NEW YORK, May 3, 2023 – As previously recommended by the WNBA’s Competition Committee and approved by the league’s Board of Governors for the 2023 season, the WNBA will for the first time implement a Coach’s Challenge.

The league also will put into effect modified rules for out-of-bounds call reviews, transition take fouls, resumption of play procedures, and bench conduct.

“The Coach’s Challenge will provide head coaches an opportunity to challenge an event that they believe was incorrectly called and introduces a strategic element to the WNBA game,” said WNBA Head of League Operations Bethany Donaphin. “We will look at the rule on a trial basis and monitor the data around its use throughout the season.”

Coach’s Challenge

Key features of the Coach’s Challenge:
• The Coach’s Challenge rule will allow a team one challenge per game (including overtime), regardless of whether the challenge is successful.
• A team can use its challenge to trigger an instant replay review of three specific events: a called foul on their own team, a called out-of-bounds violation, or a called goaltending or basket interference violation. Replay for a called goaltending or basket interference violation will only be triggered by the on-court officials during the last two minutes of the fourth period or last two minutes of any overtime period replay. A Coach’s Challenge is now the only mechanism to trigger a replay review of an out-of-bounds violation at any point in the game. (Under the previous rule, referees could trigger reviews for out-of- bounds reviews in last two minutes of the fourth quarter and last two minutes of any overtime period).
•   will provide the visual signal   and verbally
indicate the call being challenged.
• • •
• Each challengeable event will have a unique set of reviewable matters for consideration. One example is that during a review for a called foul, the officials can rule on the matter of continuation.
To initiate a challenge, a team must immediately call a legal full timeout and the head coach
for a challenge by twirling an index finger toward the referees
If a team attempts to challenge an event with no remaining timeouts, the team is charged an excessive
timeout, for which the penalty is a technical foul, and no challenge will take place.
If a team calls a timeout to challenge an event that may not be reviewed, the team will be charged a
timeout but will retain its challenge.
As with other replay reviews, in order to overturn the event as called on the floor, there must be clear
and conclusive visual evidence that the call was incorrect.

Transition Take Foul

Beginning in 2023 a heightened penalty will be imposed when a defensive player commits a “transition take foul.”

“The modified rules regarding transition take fouls will lead to improved game flow and increased fast break scoring opportunities while still allowing strategic ‘take fouls’ in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and last two minutes of all overtime periods,” said Donaphin.

Key elements regarding the “transition take foul”:
• The offensive team will be awarded one free throw, which may be attempted by any player on the floor at the time the foul is committed.
• The offensive team will retain possession of the ball and the defensive player who commits the foul will be assessed a common personal foul.
• The primary factor to determine if a foul constitutes a “take foul” is whether the defender made a legitimate play on the ball. Other relevant factors include whether (i) the defender gives up on the play (i.e. a defender wraps up or grabs an opponent in a non-basketball manner), or (ii) the defender is out of position and unable to make a legal play on the ball or offensive player.

Resumption of Play Procedures

The resumption of play rules have been modified such that, if applicable in connection with a Coach’s Challenge, or any call treated as an inadvertent whistle (e.g. a shot clock violation overturned via replay review initiated by the on-court officials during the last two minutes of the game), possession will be awarded to the team that clearly and conclusively would have gained possession at the time of the whistle. If this standard is not met, play will be resumed via a jump ball.

Two factors are relevant to determine whether a team clearly and conclusively would have imminently gained possession of the ball at the time of the whistle:
• The proximity of opposing player(s) to the ball (or lack thereof); and
• The actual outcome of the play in the natural and immediate aftermath of the whistle (e.g. a player
secured the ball).

Bench Conduct

New rules are in place for the 2023 WNBA Season to reduce disruptions and distractions during live play. Specifically, players not in the game may not remain standing at or away from their team’s bench during the game for a prolonged period and, along with coaches, are prohibited from attempting to distract their opponents in an unsportsmanlike manner.

Violations are subject to penalties (e.g., technical foul, delay of game).
