Philly WBB Summer League: Maroon, Red and Black Still Unbeaten Heading to the Holiday Break

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. - The top of the standings of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League went blazing away into the week-long July 4th holiday break Thursday night with the three unbeatens extending their perfect start at 4-0 while the middle section underwent some re-shuffling.

All five teams grabbing victories had little problem putting away the opposition, which made things easy for your Guru writing this report considering that with byline colleague Bob Heller away at the College Sports Information Directors Convention in Washington, there was not much need for the usual fine-point reporting he provides with the recaps.

Maroon, also known as DII USciences, thumped Lime 110-36; Red, also known as DII Kutztown, cruised over Kelly Green, also known as DII Chestnut Hill 82-45; and Black, also known as DII Jefferson U., handled Orange, also known as DIII Penn State-Abington, 70-46.

Royal Blue stayed a game behind the leaders at 3-1 with an 84-59 win over Sky Blue, also known as DIII Arcadia, while Golden Sun snapped a two-game losing streak with a 92-61 win over Purple to gain a seedings tie-break in this week’s standings over their opponent.

There have been 20 games from opening night through Thursday at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, and with the blowouts recently completed, just one game this summer to date went to the final seconds while just two more were undecided into the fourth quarter.

Nevertheless, that stat should not detract from the overall experience. Commissioner David Kessler, now in his 25th season running the summer action, said he has given pep talks after losses suffered by the lower teams but players have said they are still enjoying themselves and relish the experience playing against some of the more polished athletes.

And there’s this tweet posted later Thursday night from longtime Jefferson coach Tom Shirley, who runs Team Black under its right name in the winter playing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

“Does summer league factor into the success of the upcoming season?

No one knows, but our ladies are 4-0 and tied for first place.

A few advantages of summer league are the bonding, the laughter and the goal setting that occurs. That is why sports will always be a core value in life.”

Scheduling is one reason the way things are a little different than in the past. A year ago, for example, the perceived better teams went head-to-head at the outset and at this point off a few upsets, no one was unbeaten.

Top Performances

Meanwhile, as for individual performances in the 20 or more points category, the scorer of the night was Lafayette incoming sophomore Natalie Kucowski, a 6-3 post player out of Saint Basil, who had 30 points to lead Red over Kelly Green.

Syracuse Redshirt senior Isis Young out of Life Center Academy and South Jersey continued to bomb the nets, this time scoring 26 to get Golden Sun back to .500 while La Salle junior Michelle Nicholls also out of Life Center Academy in the same game also scored 26 on the Purple side.

Emma Dorshimer had 25 in the other top performance leading Royal to its win over Sky Blue.

Young has been over 20 points in all four games, scoring a season-high 39 in the opener for best in league to date, and has also scored 31 and another 26 points.

All four are repeat peak scorers with Kucowski scoring 22 and 21 points in two other games, Nicholls scoring 34 on Tuesday this week, and Dorshimer 21 in Royal’s season opener.

Looking Ahead

At least one team will fall from the unbeaten column when action resumes here July 10 with Maroon facing Black on Court 3 in an 8:15 nightcap off a doubleheader after the two had gotten after it in the winter in the CACC Southern Division.

Likewise. At least one team will get its first win as 0-4 Sky Blue plays 0-4 Orange on Court 2 at 8:15 p.m.

Elsewhere, 3-1 Royal faces 2-2 Golden Sun on Court 2 at 7 p.m., while 4-0 Red will be a strong favorite over 1-3 Lime on Court 1 at 7 p.m. and 2-2 Purple meets 0-4 Kelly Green.

Though the top is getting distance from the bottom, the three winless teams are just two games off the sixth seed, which is the last of the first-round byes available in the final standings. Seeds 7-10 will start the playoffs with a doubleheader play-in round.

Breaking Ties

It’s still a bit early but the foundation for the stretch drive is settling. For this week to show you how the system works in certain ways, Maroon gets the No. 1 seed for the moment because one of its wins is over 1-3 over Lime, giving it a premium spot while Black and Red are listed alphabetically at 2 and 3.

Royal at 3-1 moved into fourth a game behind the league leaders. Golden Sun’s win over Purple put it back at .500 and in fifth over sixth-seeded Purple, while Lime is alone in the seventh seed.

Orange, Sky and Kelly are also winless at 0-4 and listed 8th through 10th, alphabetically.

Recaps

Maroon 110, Lime 36

This was over very quickly, the way UConn has mowed down teams in Division I, and while no one on the winning Maroon/USciences squad hit 20 or more points, a balanced attack showed Brigit Coleman out of Gwynedd Mercy scoring 16 points propelled by four three-balls, while a trio of Devils scored 14 points each from Taylor Hamm out of Perkiomen Valley, while four 3-pointers each from Jess Huber out of North Penn and Colleen Walsh out of Shipley School helped account for their totals.

Gabrielle Troisi, a West Chester junior out of Pope John Paul II, scored 13 for Lime, over a third of her team’s total.

Golden Sun 92, Purple 61

Isis Young’s 26 were built from four dimes and Sam Brusha, an incoming Millersville freshman out of Abington, had 19 points, hitting three long balls from beyond the arc for the winners.

Michelle Nicholls, the New Zealander for the Explorers, nailed six three-balls to propel her to 26 for Purple, and Jada Smith, a Holy Family sophomore out of Merion Mercy, had 13 points.

Red 82, Kelly Green 45

Kucowski, scoring 30, was 5-for-6 from the line, while Red also got 10 points each from Kutztown senior Taylor Thames out of North Penn and senior Kalee Fuegel out of Saint Basil.

Kate Seeman and Cassie Seebold each scored eight for Kelly Green.

Black 70, Orange 46

While Black has dominated, the Jefferson group has scored by committee so to speak as Rams incoming freshman Haley Meinel out of Central Bucks South scored 10 points, while nine each were collected by senior Valez Jackson out of Merion Mercy and junior Caitlyn Cunningham out of Mount St. Joseph’s.

Shayna Rodriguez, a PSU-Abington senior out of Archbishop Ryan, scored 14 for Orange, which also got 11 from Sydney Barrow, a junior out of John Bartram.

Royal 84, Sky Blue 59

Dorshimer had four 3-pointers fueling her 25 for Royal while Hannah Fox, a junior for two-time defending NCAA Division III champion out of Penn Charter, had 19 points.

Taylor Fritz, an Arcadia sophomore out of Philadelphia Academy Charter, had 17 points for Sky Blue and Eden Miller, an Arcadia freshman out of Manheim Township, had 11 points.

Now Here’s the scoreboard to finish out with rosters attached at the bottom.
