The Guru Report: Old Rivals to Meet Again as Black/D2-Jefferson and Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads Advance to Championship of the Philly Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. -  On Thursday night in which history in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League was made at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, with the streaming of the semifinals by Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Base Network (SFBN) on YouTube, a couple of things very familiar emerged to head to Tuesday’s championship at 7 p.m. on Court 1.

That would be those long-running winter rivals in the Division Two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division (CACC), Black/Jefferson and defending champion Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads, who have battled in both settings.

That will no longer be possible in the winter because the USciences’ athletics program for undergrads ceased to exist at the end of June with the school merging with D-1 Saint Joseph’s University.

However, the Devils’ long time coach Jackie Hartzell was in the gym as the last semblance of the program, organized last summer as a grad unit, played as the second seed and topped third-seed Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family, another CACC team, 57-43, though it took several thrusts for Heather Maroon (7-2 regular season) to down the opposition 57-43.

The winners took a quick early lead but the Tigers (6-3) then rallied close and there was another thrust and parry before the championship remained where it was acquired 12 months ago, at least minimally for one more night.

Meanwhile, the opener was a state of revenge achieved again with fifth-seeded Black/D2-Jefferson ejecting top-seed Red/Chestnut Hill 62-53.

It was a year ago that Jefferson hit the semifinals unbeaten and got upended by Chestnut Hill, which had played the summer schedule to a .500 record.

This year in what was a ten-team organization on a nine-game slate, Jefferson (6-3) struggled uncharacteristically at the outset, then went on a run before being slammed by Purple/D-2 West Chester and finishing in the fifth seed slot after tie-breaking procedures broke up a four-game deadlock for third.

Black, which also knocked out then top-seeded Chestnut Hill from the CACC playoffs, paid back Purple in the quarterfinals before emerging Thursday night.

Incidentally, a salute to the one-man play-by-play broadcast effort from Luke Nichols and his production crew and a mention to the presenting sponsor for the streaming broadcast as well as the Tuesday return for the championship which is Payroll Service Solutions - a Philadelphia based Payroll Tax Services & Human Resources Consulting company, which is supported by many local athletes including former Phillies pitchers Tommy Greene and Marty Bystrom.

Now, here’s Bob’s recaps of the two semifinals games.

#5-Black/D2-Jefferson 62, #1-Red/D2-Chestnut Hill 53

Fifth Seed Black (Jefferson University) pulled away late in the first quarter and held top seed Red (Chestnut Hill College) at bay for the remaining 30 minutes as they advanced to Tuesday’s Championship game with a 62-53 win.

Nine players scored for Black with Emma Kuczynski leading the way with ten points. Haley Meinel and tori Nigro added eight apiece.

Red also had nine players score in the losing effort, with Morgan Orloski and Bri Hewlett producing ten points apiece and Sara Tamoun sinking three three-point baskets for nine total points.

Black took the early jumping ahead 9-3 following a traditional three-point play from Sam Yencha and a bucket from Cassie Murphy but Red kept within striking distance, closing within two 16-14 before Black closed out the first quarter with a 10-5 run to lead 26-19.

Red opened the second quarter with a 7-2 spurt capped by a Tamoun three-ball to again pull within two 28-26 and forcing a Black timeout.

Four different players produced a 10-2 run for the underdogs coming out of the timeout as Black took a double-digit lead 38-28.

Abbey Spratt followed with a three-point bucket before Yencha closed out the half with a layup to give Black a 40-31 lead at the half.

Tamoun opened the third quarter with her third three-ball of the game as Red scored the first six points to cut the lead to 40-37.

Black countered with another 10-2 uprising to again go up by double digits 50-39.

Emily Chmiel and Kait Carter scored back-to back baskets to cut the lead to seven. Morgan Robinson closed out the quarter with a layup and Black’s lead was the same as it was at halftime, nine points, 52-43.

Lauren Crim pulled Red within six 52-46 with a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter before Black again pulled away with an 8-3 spurt as Nigro scored half of the points in the run and black again went up by double digits 60-49.

Carter broke the run with a basket at the 2:19 mark and Orloski added two free throws to make the score 60-53.

Nigro capped off the scoring with a basket in the final 30 seconds, giving Black the nine-point win.

#2-Heather Maroon 57, #3-Columbia Blue 43

Defending league champion and second seed Heather Maroon (USciences grads) held off several surges from third seed Columbia Blue (Holy Family University) in the first half before pulling away late in the second quarter en route to a 57-43 victory.

Maroon, who led the game wire-to-wire, advances to the league championship game on Tuesday August 2 at 7:00 against fifth seed Black, a 62-53 upset winner over top seed Red in the early game.

Irisa ye led Maroon with 17 points. Jess Huber chipped in 14 while Kate Connelly added 11.

Monee Moore was the lone Columbia blue player in double figures with 12 points.

Huber and Connelly keyed a first quarter opening run as Maroon jumped out to a 16-2 lead over the first six minutes of the first quarter.

Blue responded with a furious rally, outscoring Maroon 12-2 with four different players scoring to pull within four 18-14 at the two teams headed to the second quarter.

Blue’s Taylor Hinkle opened the second quarter with a short jumper to pull blue within two 18-16 before Shannon May’s two baskets put Maroon back up 23-16.

Blue scored the next five points to again pull within two 23-21 before Ye and Lexie Edwards combined for an 8-0 spurt for Maroon to increase their lead back to double digits 31-21 late in the second quarter. Ye’s two free throws pushed the lead to 36-24 at the half.

Maroon maintained their double-digit lead throughout most of the third quarter before Moore had two straight baskets to cut the lead to eight 47-39.

Huber closed out the third quarter with a basket to again give Maroon a double-digit lead 49-39.

Baskets from Connolly and Ye extended the lead as the fourth quarter began while Maroon’s defense was holding Blue scoreless for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter.

Claire Dougherty’s basket at the 3:51 mark was Blue’s first points of the period and their only points until Moore added a basket with two minutes left, making the final score 57-43.

The Guru Report: Top Three Seeds and Black/D2-Jefferson Advance Setting Up An All-CACC South Semifinals in Philly Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Four teams that all have “champion” in their pedigrees in terms of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, as well as in NCAA winter competition, advanced out of Tuesday night’s quarterfinals to Thursday’s semifinal doubleheader, which will make history being streamed for the first time by Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Base Network (SBFN).

Here is the link for the semifinals and a separate one will come at the end of the week for the final, though it is listed way down below in the playoff schedule. https://youtu.be/0qMRig4Ks9E

In terms of seeds, which had only one game separate six teams in the nine-game regular summer competition involving ten squads, the first three all won while a mild upset of sorts happened with No. 5 Black/Jefferson (6-3) gaining a 59-51 win over No. 4 Purple/D2-West Chester, though those two were involved in a four-way deadlock for third before the tie-break procedures were used to set the matchups.

But that outcome set up an all Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division (CACC) among teams that have battled or won titles in both competitions.

Holy Family (Columbia Blue) was an upset winner for the summer crown several seasons ago just prior to Bernadette Laukaitis returning to her alma mater after serving as an aide at Penn to Mike McLaughlin, who was her coach with the Tigers.

Jefferson (Black) went unbeaten into the playoffs a year ago in the summer league until Chestnut Hill (Red) upset the Rams in the semifinals and had a record winter.

USciences Grads, the defending summer champs, has won in both sectors though the squad as of June no longer competes in undergrad competition due to the merger with D-1 Saint Joseph’s University.

As for the other three quarterfinals results, second-seeded Heather Maroon had a scare from Kelly Green, one of two designated draft squads, owning just a three-point lead with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in regulation before pulling away to win 68-59.

There were two draft teams, Sun was eliminated in the opening round, so named because the rosters are dominated by teams that play as units in the winter, which is permitted by the NCAA except for Division I undergrads, in which just two current enrolled teammates can play on the same summer squad.

That Heather Maroon-Kelly Green game  also produced the sole player Tuesday night to reach the Guru’s 20 or more points individual performance citation in the four games and it was a familiar person, Jess Huber, who had a league season high 27 points, nailing four three-balls in the fourth quarter, and making it the fifth time she has reached the barrier.

Three-seed Columbia Blue had little trouble thumping sixth-seed Pink 52-28, while top-seed Red handled ninth-seeded Orange/D3-Ursinus 86-59 in the other game. The Bears had pulled an upset beating 8th-seed Sun (3-6) in the opening round to get to play the Chestnut Hill group.

Seeds aside, there were reversals Tuesday night from earlier meetings: Black got even for the rout recently delivered by Purple 83-40 while Columbia Blue in a huge way made up for its 55-53 setback to Pink on June 28.

Meanwhile, Red, which beat Orange, 76-45 on opening night, wasn’t seriously threatened this time either, though as mentioned, Heather Maroon was extended much further than its 69-51 win over Kelly Green on June 23.

In the semifinals on Thursday, both on Court 1, Black will meet Red at 6:30 p.m. before Heather Maroon meets Columbia Blue at 7:45 p.m.

In their earlier meetings Black beat Red 48-39 after ruining a great conference run for Chestnut Hill last winter, knocking them out of the CACC playoffs. Heather Maroon, which went on to win the CACC playoffs, downed Columbia in one of the more exciting games of the summer narrowly 61-59 in overtime.

Now, here’s Bob with more detail recaps of the quarterfinals.

Recaps

#1 Red 86  #9 Orange 59

Top Seed Red (Chestnut Hill College) placed four players in double figures as they cruised to an 86-59 victory over #9 Orange (Ursinus College).

Red advances to the semi-final round where they will face #5 Black (Jefferson University) on Thursday.

Black won their quarterfinal game vs. Purple (West Chester University).

The two teams compete against each other in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in the winter season and last faced each other in the CACC Semi-finals last March.

Morgan Orloski led all scorers with 19 points (3 three’s) while Lauren Crim added 16 (4 three’s). Joining Orloski and Crim in double figures were Emily Chmiel (14 points) and Emily Sekerak (12 points).

Maria D’Aulerio led Orange with 15 points while Ellie Mack added ten.

The two teams spent the better part of the first quarter exchanging baskets with Orange holding a 10-9 lead.

Crim scored Red’s next seven points with Morgan Sterner following with a basket to cap off a 9-2 run to put Red in control 18-12.

Mack followed with her second three-ball of the period before Chmiel and Lindsey Lane closed out the quarter with back-to-back baskets.

Red scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 30-15 lead and finished the quarter outscoring Orange 21-7 to hold a commanding 43-22 lead at halftime.

Orloski scored nine of her 19 points in the third quarter as Red extended their lead to 61-36 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Orange started to chip away at the lead, opening the quarter with a 12-6 run to cut the lead to 19, 67-48.

Red came right back with an 16-5 spurt to increase their lead to 30, 83-53, before settling in for the 27-point win.

#2 Heather Maroon 68  #7 Kelly Green 59

Second Seed Heather Maroon (USciences Grads) held off a fourth quarter rally by #7 Kelly Green to earn a 68-59 win and advance to the semi-final round.

Maroon will play #3 seed Columbia Blue (Holy Family University) in Thursday’s second semifinal game.

Columbia Blue won their semi-final game against #6 Pink (Kutztown University).

Maroon’s Jess Huber led all scorers with a season-high 27 points. Lexie Edwards added 18 points while Irisa Ye chipped in 15.

Alexa Naessens led Kelly Green with 16 points while Annie Aspesi added 11.

Maroon took control late in the first quarter after a wild ten minutes that saw six lead changes, leading by two after one quarter, ten at halftime and 14 after three quarters.

Huber sank two three-point baskets to open the fourth quarter to give Maroon a 20-point lead 54-34 just two minutes into the final quarter. Green exploded with a 21-4 run over the next four minutes with Rachel Saxton making three three-pointers over the run as Green cut the lead to three 58-55 with 3:20 left.

Ye followed with a basket to put Maroon back up by five before Huber sank two free throws and added another three-point basket to give Maroon a 65-55 lead with 1:53 left. Two Kelly Green free throws briefly broke the run, but Huber put the icing on her performance with a step-back three-ball from the left corner with under 30 seconds left. Natalie Kolb scored Green’s final points to make the final score 68-59.

#3 Columbia Blue 52  #6 Pink 28

In the lowest scoring game among all four quarterfinal games Tuesday night, #3 seed Columbia Blue (Holy Family University) outscored #6 seed Pink (Kutztown University) 31-11 in the second half to cruise to a 52-28 win.

Columbia Blue will advance to the semi-finals and face defending league champion Heather Maroon (USciences grads) who held off Kelly Green to advance to the semifinals. The two teams complete an all-CACC semi-final round joining Red (Chestnut Hill) and Black (Jefferson) who will face each other in the early semi-final game.

Lindsey Tretter led Columbia Blue with 14 points while Jessica Riepe chipped in 11. Casey Remolde led Pink with nine points.

Neither team produced much offense in the first quarter as both teams made just two field goals in the period after Pink opened the scoring with a pair of free throws and held a 6-4 lead by the end of the quarter.

Pink continued to lead through the first half of the second quarter before Blue ran off seven straight points, capped by a Skyler Searfoss three-point basket to take their first lead of the game 14-11. Pink regained the lead with four straight points before Blue closed out the half with a 6-3 run to lead 21-17.

Blue’s defense went to work in the third quarter, holding Pink to just one field goal early, allowing their offense to score the last 13 points of the quarter to take a 36-19 lead heading into the final period.

Two more baskets by Blue to start the fourth quarter gave the victors a 17-0 run before Remolde broke the streak with a free throw, making the score 40-20. Pink scored six of the next eight points to pull within 16 42-26 but that would be as close as they would get as Blue finished the game on a 10-2 run.

#5 Black 59  #4 Purple 51

Black (Jefferson University) avenged a 43-point regular season loss to Purple (West Chester university) as they rallied in the second half to earn a 59-51 win in the second early quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

With the win, black advances to the semi-finals and will face top seed Red (Chestnut Hill) in the early semi-final game on Thursday.

Sam Yencha and Emily Keehfuss led Black with ten points apiece. Emily Spratt added nine points as Black had nine different players score on the night. Rachel Conran and Emily McAteer had nine points apiece for Purple.

Like their first meeting, Purple started off hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead but this time Black did not let the game get out of hand, never letting Purple’s lead get into double digits as they closed within three late in the quarter before a Noelle Baxter basket made the score 23-18 after one quarter.

Black cut the lead to two twice in the second quarter as the pace of the gamer slowed down with black outscoring Pink 11-9 in the quarter to trail 32-29 at halftime.

Tori Nigro gave Black their first lead of the game just 2:27 into the second half at 33-32.

A Conran free throw tied the game at 33-all before black scored the next nine points to lead 42-33 with 4:13 left. Emma Kuczynski and Morgan Robinson increased Black’s lead to double digits 48-37 as the third quarter came to a close.

Purple opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to pull within four, 48-44 and shortly thereafter cut the leads to two 50-48 on a Leah Johnson layup.

Black added two straight baskets to go back up by six 54-48 and led 56-50 with 3:09 left following Jordan Thomas’ basket.

Alexa Abbonizio’s free throw made the score 56-51 before Black’s Sam Yencha closed to the game with three free throws in the final minute to secure the eight-point win for black.

Setting The Semifinals —  (Streaming - SFBN on YouTube. https://youtu.be/0qMRig4Ks9E )

Because of the short 48-hour turnaround, as was done to advance the opening round and quarterfinals, here’s the matchups in each of the two games offering Bob’s recap from the earlier summer meetings as well as roster and season team results of the semifinals.

5-Seed Black (6-3) vs. 1-Seed Red (7-2), 6:30 p.m., Court 1

Earlier Meeting: Black 48, Red 39

Black (Thomas Jefferson University) earned their first win of the season, defeating a short-handed Red (Chestnut Hill College) squad 48-39 in one of the late games Thursday.

The Black squad improves to 1-2 and sits in eighth place while Red, who were without two of their taller players, dropped to 2-2 and sit in a four-way tie for fourth place.

The two teams each placed one player in double figures with Tori Nigro leading Black with 12 points and Avery White leading Red with 13.

Both players will be incoming freshman at their respective schools in the fall.

Black took a five point lead into the second quarter but Red promptly erased the deficit with three point baskets from Siobhan Boylan and White to lead 13-12.

Another White basket gave Red a three-point lead before Black rallied with an 8-4 mini run to retake the lead 20-19.

Morgan Sterner gave the lead back to Red 21-20 before Black scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 26-21 at the half.

Morgan Robinson’s basket put Black up 32-24 in the third quarter before Red baskets from Lindsey Lane and White cut the deficit in half 32-28.

Black countered with an 8-0 run to open up a double-digit lead 40-28  and led 42-39 on Nigro’s basket late in the quarter.

Abbey Spratt added a layup in the final seconds to close the deficit to nine 42-31 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Neither team mustered a lot of offense in the fourth quarter with Black outscoring Red 6-4 over the first seven minutes of the quarter.  Sara Tamoun and White scored Red’s final two baskets as Black hung on for the nine point win.

Earlier Meeting: Heather Marron/D2-USciences Grads 61, Columbia Blue 59, overtime

In a battle between first night winners, Heather Maroon (USciences alums) and Columbia Blue (Holy Family) need overtime to decide their contest with Heather Maroon prevailing 61-59 to remain undefeated for the first week of action.

Former USciences greats Jess Huber and Irisa Ye led the Maroon squad with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Columbia blue placed three players in double figures led by Jessica Riepe’s 12 points. Monee Moore added 11 while Anujin Dashdorj chipped in ten.

Huber forced the overtime with a game-tying three-ball with 1:40 left in regulation as neither team scored in the final 100 seconds of play.

Former Chestnut Hill College star Cassie Sebold gave Maroon their first lead since the second quarter, 56-54 to open the overtime.

Riepe countered with a three-point basket to put Blue back on top 57-56.

Allie Crone (Cornell ’10) put Maroon back on top for good with a three-ball with 13 seconds left and Huber added two free throws with six ticks left on the clock.

Moore’s basket at the buzzer made the final score a bit closer at 61-59.

Blue had held a double digit lead in the opening quarter before Maroon cut the gap to five 19-14 heading into the second period.

Throughout much of the next two periods, the two teams were no more than two possessions apart with neither team leading by more than five until the final moments of the third quarter when an Ava Morrow basket gave Blue a 48-42 lead heading into the final quarter.

Dashdorj had given Blue a 51-42 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter before a 7-0 run by Maroon closed the gap to two 51-49.

Riepe’s three-point basket with 2:19 left in regulation pushed the lead to 54-49 before Maroon rallied to tie the game
