The Guru Report: Playoffs Appear Wide Open As Quarterfinals Arrive Tuesday Night in Philly/Suburban Women’s League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Given the fact that one game separated the top six squads in the final regular season standings - two in first and four in third - suggests that unlike previous seasons the outlook calls for a wide-open viewpoint when the quarterfinals of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League playoffs tip off at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

But first, here is your link for the streaming broadcast for the Thursday semifinals and next Tuesday championship from the Sports Fan Base Network (SFBN). https://youtu.be/5p4CXwiJTXk

Meanwhile one only needs to look back to a year ago when Black/D2-Jefferson, unbeaten through the quarterfinals, and the D2-USciences undergrads, the 1-2 seeds, fell in the semis to the USciences grads and D2-Chestnut Hill College squads.

The first six seeded teams had byes but even in Thursday’s opening round a surprise of sorts was sprung with a fourth quarter rally in the nightcap that brought a 71-67 revenge upset by ninth-seeded Orange, which had but one victory, over 8th-seeded Sun, one of two draft teams (3-6) getting even for the D3-Ursinus (3-6) loss 75-62 back on the season’s third night on June 21.

In Thursday’s opener seventh-seeded Kelly Green (3-6), the other draft team, had little difficulty gaining a 76-54 win over 10th-seeded Royal Blue/D3-Arcadia (0-9) that determined the quarterfinal opponent for top-seed Red/D2-Chestnut Hill (7-2).

Draft teams are so named off the preseason draft in May because neither roster is dominated by a school that plays in the winter.

On Tuesday night Orange and Red will tip off at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 with Orange seeking a second straight revenge win to get even for the 76-45 loss in the season opener.

At the same time on Court 2, sixth-seeded Pink (3-6)/D2-Kutztown will meet third-seeded Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family (3-6), the latter looking to avenge a narrow 55-53 loss on June 28.

To show how close these teams were among the first six, had not Pink been stuck with a 2-0 forfeit last Tuesday to Black, they would have a chance to play for the top seed.

In the other two games in the quarterfinals at 7:45 p.m. on Court 1 Kelly Green will meet second-seeded Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads (7-2), which picked up an easy 69-51 rout on June 23.

Fifth-seeded Black/D2-Jefferson  (6-3) will meet fourth-seeded Purple/D2-West Chester (6-3) on Court 2. The two recently met two weeks ago on July 14, a night when each played two games, having first going against each other in a game rescheduled from early in the season that avoided a forfeit that would have been assessed to Black.

Purple took that one surprisingly easy 83-40 before each took their second games, Purple beating Kelly Green, 66-59, and Black rallying for a 53-45 win over Sun.

All that said, we’ll now set the matches as we did in the opening round advance, bringing back Bob’s account of the first meetings, the team rosters, and the team season recap scores.

Following the games, the semifinals will be set with the lowest surviving seed meeting the highest one Thursday on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m., followed by the other two quarterfinal survivors playing at 7:45 p.m., also on Court 1.

6-Pink/D2- Kutztown  (6-3) vs. 3-Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family (6-3), 6;30 p.m., Court 2

Earlier Meeting; Pink 55, Columbia Blue 53

Columbia Blue’s (Holy Family University) late rally fell short as Pink (Kutztown University) hung on for a 55-53 win in a late game Tuesday.

Both teams now have a 3-2 record in the first five games of the league.

Leila Hurley led the Pink team with 15 points while Olivia Smelas chipped in 12.

Taylor Hinkle was the lone player in double figures for Columbia Blue with 13 points (three three-point FG’s).

A close game throughout, Pink built up a six point lead heading into the final minute of play in the fourth quarter, 54-58

A three point bucket from Hinkle, a turnover by Pink and a basket by Skyler Searfoss in the span of 29 seconds quickly made it a one-point game 54-53.

Following a timeout, Columbia was forced to foul and sent Casey Remolde to the free throw lineRemolde made one of two shots to give Pink a two point lead

Hinkle missed a go-ahead three-pointer and Pink made a long inbounds pass to Remolde who was subsequently fouled.

Remolde uncharacteristically missed both free throws, giving Blue one last chance which fell short as Pink hung on for the win.

The two teams were tied at halftime and again at the end of three quarters

Monee Moore opened the fourth quarter with a layup and put Blue ahead 42-40

Pink got consecutive three-point baskets from Noelle Baxter and Annie Whalen to retake the lead and start a 10-0 run to take a 50-42 lead

Six straight points from Blue closed the gap to two before Abby Goodrich scored four straight points to push Pink’s lead to six 54-48, setting up the frantic final minute of action.

In the other early game, Heather Maroon (Usciences Alumni +)used a 25-point second quarter outburst then turned on the defense holding Kelly Green to just four third quarter points as the Maroon squad remained undefeated with a 69-51 win over Kelly Green.

Ye’s basket at the 6:30 mark put Maroon ahead for good and started a 22-5 run capped off by a Ye three-point basket and giving Maroon a 45-28 lead.  Hansson scored two baskets in the final minute to cut the Maroon lead to 11 at the half, 45-34.

5-Black/D2-Jefferson (6-3) vs. 4-Purple/D2-West Chester (6-3), 7:45 p.m., Court 2

Earlier Meeting: Purple 83, Black 40

Purple (West Chester University) placed five players in double figures as they cruised to an easy 83-40 win over Black (Jefferson University) in the makeup game from earlier in the season.

The win upped Purple’s record to 4-3 while Black had their four-game win streak snapped and dropped to 4-3.  Both teams would play again against their regularly scheduled opponent in the second round of games on the evening.

Alexa Abbonizio led Purple with 15 points while Rachel Conran and Emily McAteer had 13 points apiece.  Leah Johnson and Michelle Kozicki chipped in ten each to round out the double figure scorers for the victors.

Emily Keehfuss was the lone player from Black in double figures with 11 points.

Purple took command right from the opening tap, scoring the first 15 points of the game enroute to a 23-1 run before Keehfuss made Black’s first field goal with just 25 seconds left in the quarter.

Abbonizio drained a long three pointer at the buzzer was sounding to end the quarter, giving Purple a 26-3 lead.

The offensive attack continued in the second quarter as Purple used a 15-6 run, capped by a traditional three-point play from Abbonizio to take a 41-9 lead before settling in to lead 46-11 at halftime.

Black got some offense going in the third quarter but Purple continued to have the hot hand, expanding their lead to 41, 67-26 on Johnson’s three-point buzzer beater.

Purple’s lead never got below 40 the rest of the way.
