The Guru Report: Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads Stay Unbeaten But Narrow 55-53 Pink/D2-Kutztown Win Over Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family Shakes Philly Summer League Standings

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa.  - The defending champion Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads continued to roll unbeaten, beating Orange/D3-Ursinus 68-42 Tuesday night at the halfway point of the regular season Philly/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

However, a narrow upset of sorts 55-53 pulled by Pink/D2-Kutztown over Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family, the sole close game of the five played, shuffled the standings with Purple/D2-West Chester (3-1) off its 74-53 rout of Sun, the second of two draft teams whose rosters are not dominated by D2 and D3 single programs, moving into second 1.5 games behind the leaders.

The Purple and Black/D2-Jefferson squads have played one less game than the other eight teams off an earlier postponement and on July 14th, the next to last night before playoff slots are formally determined, they will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Court 3 before completing two played double headers with Black facing Sun on Court 1 at 7:45 p.m. while at the same time Purple will face Kelly Green, the other draft squad, on Court 2.

The other two games on Tuesday saw Red/D2-Chestnut Hill romp over Royal/D3-Arcadia, the sole winless squad, 83-60, while while Black got to .500 at 2-2 defeating Kelly Green 82-50.

The sole person achieving the nightly 20 or more points milestone was again USciences grad Jess Uber, in her third such distinction in five games, matching her individual and league high 24 points in the win over Orange. Fulling the stat sheet, she nailed six three-pointers to account for 18 of the points.

Just missing from joining the citations were Morgan Orloski, a newly minted Chestnut Hill grad out of Bethlehem Catholic, helping Red’s win, and Kelly Green’s Dana Bandurick, a Swarthmore junior out of Council Rock North, each with 19 points.

The playoff seed tracker is in its true position down below but a cautionary note advises not everyone has met each other so the tie breakers are not born out of equal determination for the moment.

Following Purple, a three-way tie for third with 3-2 records exists among Pink, Red and Columbia Blue.

Among themselves, Pink has met the other two and swept both to take the third seed, while Red and Columbia Blue are each 0-1 and have yet to meet.

Thus, for now, Red, off an earlier win over Purple, a triumph better than anything standings-wise by Columbia Blue, gains the fourth seed while, leaving Holy Family in fifth.

Black at 2-2 is alone in sixth while the two draft teams are tied for seventh at 2-3, but Kelly Green owns a head-to-head win over Sun for seventh.

Orange is alone in ninth at 1-4 and Royal Blue is 10th.

If the playoffs began now, which of course is nowhere near from final determination, in the opening play-in round would see 7-Kelly Green meeting 10-Royal Blue while 8-Sun would face 9-Orange.

The quarterfinals would then have the top seed meeting the lowest surviving seed from the opener while the second-seed would meet the other winner. The night would be completed with the sixth seed facing the third seed while the fifth seed would meet the fourth, and then a re-seed would occur, if necessary, among the four survivors advancing to the semifinals.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday completing the second part of week three before standing down across the holidays until Tuesday, July 12, the 6:30 p.m. games will see Sun (2-3) meeting Red (3-2) on Court 1, a chance for each team to make headway, while a major showdown on Court 2 will see Columbia Blue (3-2), one of the three third place squad, facing second-place Purple (3-1).

The three 7:45 p.m. games have Black (2-2) in sixth gaining a chance to keep climbing facing Royal Blue (0-5) seeking a big upset. A showdown on Court 2 will have the first place leaders (5-0) meeting Pink (3-2) while on Court 3 trying to move into better positioning Kelly Green (2-3) meets Orange 1-4.
