Guru Report: Philly Summer League Set to Open Tuesday — June 14 —Ten Teams Play Five Games Tues and Thurs Nights

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

The Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League kicks off another season Tuesday night, Flag Day, returning to the more traditional pattern in pre-pandemic days as opposed to last summer, which was still successful, when just eight teams played on Thursday night.

This year it’s back to Tuesday and Thursdays, with July 4 week dark, and playoffs beginning near the end of July and concluding Aug. 2 with the championship fourth playoff round at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Hatboro, Pa.

The three-court facility is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive near the intersection of Davisville and Byberry Roads, not far from the 611 Exit of thePennsylvania Turnpike. It comes up easy on a google search.

The difference from 2019, the league didn’t play in 2020, is there are no undergrad Division I players, due to a low turnout and costs involved under NCAA requirements. Graduate players are eligible.

This summer there will be ten teams, the Division 2 groups of Black/Jefferson, Columbia Blue/Holy Family, Pink/Kutztown, Purple/West Chester, Red/Chestnut Hill, and the Division 3 tandem of Royal Blue/Arcadia and Orange/Ursinus.

Under NCAA rules, the D2 and D3 teams that exist in the winter can play as whole units in the summer.

Additionally, though D2 USciences has merged with D1 Saint Joseph’s, like last year when they won it all, of the remaining three teams, one will be a Heather Marion/USciences grad squad. The other two teams, named for coverage purposes here, will be Kelly Green/Draft Team 1 and Sun/Draft Team 2. These are squads filled with everyone else registered who were not part of the previous eight teams.

Each of the two nights, There will be two early games on Courts 1 and 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a 15 minute grace for late arrivals, if necessary, to fill a playable squad and avoid a forfeit. They will be followed by three games, adding Court 3, at 7:45 p.m. with no grace to avoid a forfeit if not enough players show to field a squad.

Coverage will be provided here and posted by the following morning with your Guru and Bob Heller again teaming on the report.

Additionally David Kessler will give out his own nightly newsletter with standings, scores, upcoming games, and notes, when there are some to offer.

On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Court 1 has the Columbia Blue/ D2 Holy Family plays Black/D2 Jefferson, whose winter coach Tom Shirley won his 800th career game early last season. Black also went unbeaten in the regular schedule before being upset in the playoffs. The Court 2 action has the Kelly Green/Draft Team 1 meeting Royal Blue/D3 Arcadia.

The late 7:45 p.m. games feature Orange/D3 Ursinus meeting Red/D2 Chestnut Hill on Court 1; Heather Maroon/D2 USciences playing the Sun/Draft Team 2 on Court 2, and Pink/D2 Kutztown going against against Purple/D2 West Chester,

Attendance is free.

Below this opening presentation, you can get an idea of the nightly agate-style items following an overview roundup, a breakdown of the games, and a preview of the next round as the season starts moving along.

Under this report to set things are standings, a running list of players who score 20 or more points (there is a line holder in this report until we are under way with someone hitting the mark).

The entire season schedule through the playoffs is then listed with the teams’ real affiliation for the opening Tuesday games.

Next is the playoff tracker used to help break ties for the seedings at the end of the regular season. Until enough games are played the teams will be in alphabetical order in this section.

Then each team’s entire season is listed with a running schedule. In this listing the locations are coded EC1 - early game, court 1, LC1 - late game, court 1, and continuing EC2 and LC2 and LC3.

Rosters will be listed afterwards.

The commissioner, who provided them, admits to not being totally on his game as evenings got later while he was assembling everything, so if you see wrong heights or spelling, or other errors, send the corrections this way.

The Renegades and League facebook pages also have items.

Your Guru is writing this returning from Knoxville by way of Chicago and using the connect time to put this lead together before attaching everything else.

You can find the bylaws at the Renegades and League sites, as well as the very bottom of this report.

There is a snack bar, that while like everywhere else suffered from supply problems last summer, still had some tasty items.

There is a chance there could be some TV streaming for the playoffs.

All that said, here’s the rest of the setup.
