The Guru Report: Philly/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League Playoffs Open With Low Seeds Battling Each Other to Advance

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. -  End game arrives tonight (July 21) behind a rapidly moving five-week regular season in the 10-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades with the start of the four-round playoffs that will conclude with the championship August 2.

Everything in the opening round occurs on just Court 1 with the low-seed doubleheader as 7-seed Kelly Green/Draft Team 1 (3-6) meets 10-seed Royal Blue/D3-Arcadia (0-9) at 6:30 p.m. before 8-seed Sun/Draft Team 2 meets 9-seed Orange/D3-Ursinus (1-9).

During the season on opening night, June 14th, Kelly Green beat Royal Blue 77-33, while Sun beat Orange 75-62 on June 21.

The winners join the six other teams holding byes for Tuesday night’s quarterfinals and will meet the league regular season co-champions 1-seed Red/D2-Chestnut Hill (7-2), which owns its status in a head-to-win, and defending champion Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads (7-2).

How they’ll meet gets determined in Thursday’s doubleheader with the lowest surviving seed playing Red next week at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 and the highest surviving seed meeting Heather Maroon at 7:45 p.m. on the same court.

Though Royal Blue did not win a game again this summer, they were competitive several nights and earlier this week were in a three-point affair in the first half until Heather Maroon exploded the rest of the way to earn a first-place tie.

The other two games in the quarterfinals have 6-seed Pink (6-3)/D2-Kutztown (6-3) meeting Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family (6-3) on Court 2 at 6:30 p.m. before 5-seed Black/D2-Jefferson (6-3) meets 4-seed Purple/D2-Jefferson (6-3) also on Court 2 at 7:45 p.m.

As the records tell you, those four teams ended up in a four-way tie for third and a game behind the frontrunners.

The seeds were determined on play within the group, Columbia Blue and Purple going 2-1 and then Columbia Blue gaining the 3-seed on a head-to-head win over Purple while likewise Black and Pink went 1-2 with Black getting the 5-seed on a head-to-head 2-0 forfeit win earlier this week with Pink, which was unable to field a required roster number squad for their games.

Those situations have happened over the course of summer play when camps, work, injuries, and vacations factor, but surprisingly not often as the competition enjoys staying in shape, having fun, and honing skills for the winter as longtime commissioner David Kessler, now in his 28th season, will often comment.

Draft team designations by the way for Kelly Green and Sun come because neither team roster is dominated by a single unit that competes in the winter, which the NCAA does not allow for active Division 1 schools.

By the way, admission is free and there is a snack bar with tasty and reasonably priced items considering supply problems that, like everywhere else, has been caused by the pandemic, which forced the league to go dark in 2020.

It almost happened again last summer, but enough interest was shown to cobble together what was a competitive eight-team operation with a wild finish when Jefferson and USciences Undergrads, the top two seeds, were upset in the semifinals by Chestnut Hill, which had finished at .500, and eventual champion USciences Grads.

Chestnut Hill went on to uphold the tradition of teams doing well in the league moving on to success in the winter as they enjoyed a record-breaking season competing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division.

Two other notes before setting the opening round is history will be made in the semifinals and final when the games are live streamed on Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Base Network (SFBN) on Youtube.

The reason there is no USciences Undergrads this summer is the school after June merged with Division One Saint Joseph’s after competing for both league and CACC championships in recent years.

8-Seed Sun/Draft Team 2 (3-6) vs. 9-seed Orange/D3-Ursinus (1-8)

Recap Regular Season Meeting: Sun 75  Orange 62

In the final game to finish Tuesday night, Orange’s Natalie Mehl sank six three point baskets and scored 24 points but the Sun’s second half defense was too much for the Orange (Ursinus College) squad as the fell to 1-2 on the season with Sun gaining their first win 75-62.

Jasmine Elum (Bethune-Cookman ’12) and Emily Violante(Gettsyburg ’25) led ten scoring players for the Sun squad with 14 points apiece.

Erin Doherty (Catholic U.) joined Mehl in double figures for Orange with ten points.

The two teams played back and forth basketball throughout the first two quarters with the score deadlocked 20-20 after the first quarter and 36-36 at halftime.   Sun’s defense went to work in the third quarter, limited Orange to just five points while outscoring their opponent 22-5 to take a 58-41 lead.

Seven different players scored for Sun in the third quarter with only one player, Violante (five third quarter points) scoring more than four points.

Sun held Orange to just one field goal, a Kylie McNicholas three-point basket midway through the quarter and Mehl later added two free throw late in the period.

Orange produced a bit more offense in the fourth quarter, outscoring Sun 21-17 in the final period, but was never able to cut the deficit to single digits as Sun closed out the 75-62 decision.
