The Guru Report: Byes Set But Not the Seeds As Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads, Red/D2-Chestnut Hill, Pink/D2-Kutztown Locked in First Place Tie in Philly Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — A demolition derby of sorts was set for the Tuesday regular season final night on on the nine-game schedule of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Red/D2-Chestnut Hill’s 58-49 win over defending champion Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads elevated the winners into a first-place tie with the opposition at 6-2 and it became a three-way crowd at the top when Pink/D2-Kutztown rolled over Orange/D3-Ursinus 62-47 dropping the Bears to 1-7.

Furthermore, another three-way deadlock occurred for fourth place aided by Black/D2-Jefferson and Purple/D2-West Chester making up a postponed game from early in the season on June 16 and also playing their regularly scheduled game.

For Purple, it was a night’s sweep easily beating Black 83-40 in the opener to tie the opposition at 5-3 after going on to a 66-59 win over Kelly Green (3-5), one of the two draft teams in the competing 10 whose roster is not dominated by any of the units in the league who also play in the winter in NCAA D2 or D3 competition.

Black almost suffered a second-straight loss, which would have been a first when these iron women situations have occurred but recovered to beat Sun, the other draft squad, rallying for a 53-45 triumph.

The third team in that deadlock is Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family which topped winless Royal Blue/D3-Arcadia 80-29, keeping the opposition winless.

One person, and a new name, reached the Guru’s individual 20 points or more citation on the night, being Erin Dougherty, a Haverford High grad who is affiliated with Catholic U, playing this summer with the Orange/D3-Ursinus team.

Incidentally, a correction on affiliation elsewhere on the rosters was made with Courtney Warley on Team Purple should be known as a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High and at the end of last semester, also a graduate of Manhattan College, which competes against Rider, among others in the D-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Live Streaming Coming to the Playoffs

The Guru interrupts this report to be pleased to tell you following discussions that began down the stretch of the collegiate last season that the semifinals, July 28th, and championship, Aug. 2, is going to be live streamed on the YouTube Channel owned by the Sports Fanbase Network (SFBN).

Led by CEO - and voice of Drexel women’s basketball, Ari Bluestein - SFBN has been live streaming high school, college and semi-pro sports since 2012.

“SFBN is excited to broadcast high level women’s basketball with the semi-finals and finals of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League,” Bluestein said.

The games can be seen on the SFBN YouTube channel at SFBNTV.com.

More info will come in the next several reports.

Setting the Seeds

Here’s how the standings line up as of now.

Pink, with wins over Heather Maroon and Red in the first-place situation is No. 1 right now, followed by Red, which split at 1-1 against the other two teams, and Heather Maroon, which had been in sole possession of first most of the season drops to third at 0-2, the only losses on its schedule.

In the next cluster, which is only a game-behind the three leaders, Columbia Blue moves to the fourth seed at 2-0 over Black and Purple, followed by Purple in fifth at 1-1 and then Black.

Because there’s a two-game differential between the fourth place bunch and the seventh slot with one night left, the first six teams regardless what happens Tuesday have byes to go straight to the quarterfinals.

Kelly Green and Orange (3-5) are tied for seventh with Kelly Green claiming the seventh slot off a head-to-head win over Orange. Neither team can climb to the quarterfinals nor drop any lower with Tuesday’s results to determine who will be seventh playing Royal Blue, which will be the tenth seed, and which will be eighth playing Orange (1-7), which will be ninth and off its earlier win over Royal Blue automatically slots to ninth without regard to the final night of action.

Meanwhile, at the moment Pink and Black are unable to play their last game Tuesday but since they are automatically into the quarterfinals can meet the same night as the first round next Thursday to determine their quarterfinal positions. However, it’s possible that if that can’t happen, Commissioner David Kessler, now in his 28th season running the league, will deal a forfeit, which has not occurred this season.

Looking Ahead

As for Showdown Tuesday, Red, one of the three front runners, will meet Kelly Green at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1, while as mentioned, Pink and Black, for now, are delayed util Thursday. A Black win would flip the squad over Pink, now the overall No. 1 seed, into the one of the upper slots for the quarterfinals.

In the late games Tuesday at 7:45 p.m., Heather Maroon will be a strong favorite over Royal Blue on Court 1, likewise Purple over Orange on Court 2, and the same for Columbia Blue meeting Sun on Court 3.

Now here’s Bob with the details.

Recaps

Red 58 Heather Maroon 49

In a battle between two of the three top teams in the league Red (Chestnut Hill College) rallied from a double-digit deficit to hand first place Heather Maroon (USciences Alumni +) a 58-49 loss to move into a three-way tie for first place.

Red and Heather Maroon are both 6-2 as the teams heading into the final night of the regular season next Tuesday.

Bri Hewlett led Red with ten points while Emily Chmiel added nine.

Jess Huber paced Maroon with 13 pints while Irisa Ye added 12.

Huber was on fire in the first five minutes of the game, connecting on her first three shot attempts and scoring eight points as her team jumped out to an 11-0 lead.

Red however turned up the defense as their offense started to gel as they rallied with a 13-3 run capped off by a half-court buzzer beater from Avery White to close out the quarter trailing by just one, 14-13.

Red used a 9-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead for good with Sara Tamoun’s three-point basket putting red in front 21-19.

White and Hewlett followed with baskets before Ye scored the final four points of the period to pull Maroon within two 25-23 at halftime.

Maroon pulled within one twice in the third quarter, the last on Ye’s three-point basket making the score 35-34.  Red than went on a 9-3 run to close out the quarter up seven, 44-37.

Meanwhile, as the Red defense was holding Huber, one of the league’s top scorers, in check, thy expanded their lead to nine with an Abbey Spratt basket to open the fourth quarter and still led by nine 51-42, on a Kait Carter basket before Maroon made one last push.

Huber’s first points since the opening five minutes of the game brought Maroon back within four, 51-47 with around four minutes remaining.  Red scored the next seven points (five from Hewlett) to seal the win.

Pink 62 Orange 47

Pink (Kutztown University) pulled into a three-way tie for first place Thursday night with a 62-47 win over Orange (Ursinus College).

Pink improved to 6-2 with the win while Orange dropped to 1-7.

Olivia Smelas led Pink with 17 points while Casey Remolde chipped in 11.

Erin Doherty led Orange with a game high 20 points while Natalie Mehl added 12.

Smelas scored nine points in the quarter including a 5-for-6 effort from the free throw line. Noelle Baxter added six second quarter points.

Orange battled back in the third quarter, slowly chipping away at the lead to pull within nine, 49-40 heading into the final period.  Mehl scored 11 points in the quarter while Doherty added five, including the basket that brought the lead into single digits.

Pink’s defense went to work in the fourth quarter, holding Orange without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the final quarter while their offense produced a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 17, 59-42.

Kelly Grant’s basket broke the run and brought Orange within 15, 59-44 with 1:26 remaining but that would be as close as the team would get.

Purple 83 Black 40

Purple (West Chester University) placed five players in double figures as they cruised to an easy 83-40 win over Black (Jefferson University) in the makeup game from earlier in the season.

The win upped Purple’s record to 4-3 while Black had their four-game win streak snapped and dropped to 4-3.

Both teams would play again against their regularly scheduled opponent in the second round of games on the evening.

Alexa Abbonizio led Purple with 15 points while Rachel Conran and Emily McAteer had 13 points apiece.  Leah Johnson and Michelle Kozicki chipped in ten each to round out the double figure scorers for the victors.

Emily Keehfuss was the lone player from Black in double figures with 11 points.

Purple took command right from the opening tap, scoring the first 15 points of the game enroute to a 23-1 run before Keehfuss made Black’s first field goal with just 25 seconds left in the quarter. Abbonizio drained a long three pointer at the buzzer was sounding to end the quarter, giving Purple a 26-3 lead.

The offensive attack continued in the second quarter as Purple used a 15-6 run, capped by a traditional three-point play from Abbonizio to take a 41-9 lead before settling in to lead 46-11 at halftime.

Black got some offense going in the third quarter but Purple continued to have the hot hand, expanding their lead to 41, 67-26 on Johnson’s three-point buzzer beater.

Purple’s lead never got below 40 the rest of the way.

Purple 66 Kelly Green 59

Purple rallied to overcome a six-point halftime deficit as they earned their second win of the night, defeating Kelly Green 66-59.

With the win, Purple moved into a three-way tie for fourth place with a 5-3 record.  Kelly Green dropped into a tie for seventh place with the loss, sporting a 3-5 record.

Purple slowly chipped away at the deficit, closing the second quarter with an 8-2 run to trail by six 31-25 at halftime.

Purple continued to chip away at the lead with Conran’s three-point basket providing Purple’s first lead of the game at 40-37.

She added another basket minutes later to cap a 19-6 run and give Purple a seven-point lead at 44-37.

McGrath’s two free throws pulled Green within three at 44-41 before Purple closed out the quarter with a 9-2 spurt to lead by ten 53-43 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Green closed within seven, 57-50 on Tamia Wessels three-point basket but Purple soon added another three-point basket to go back up by ten 60-50 with four minutes remaining.

Green would come no closer than seven the rest of the way.

 Black 53 Sun 45

Black struggled from their early game blowout but recovered enough to pull out a 53-45 win over Sun to earn a split of their two-game set on Thursday.

With the win Black now moves into a three-way tie for fourth place at 5-3.  Sun falls into a tie for seventh place at 3-5.

Cassie Murphy led Black with 16 points while Tori Nigro chipped in ten.

Emily Violante led Sun with 14 points while Samantha Brusha scored 11.

Black held the early lead in the opening quarter before Sun produced a 10-5 run to closed out the period and take a small 14-11 lead.

Black scored the first four points of the second quarter to retake the lead 15-14.

Both teams struggled on offense in the quarter, combining for just 15 total points.  Sun retook the lead and led by four before Black scored the final four points of the quarter to tie the game at 20-20 at the half.

Six lead changes highlighted the third quarter with neither team pulling away as Sun clung to a one-point lead 40-39 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Black opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to lead 49-41 at the midway point.

Murphy provided the spark scoring six of her 16 points in the final period.

Black’s defense kept Sun at arm’s length with Sun coming no closer than six at 49-43 before settling in for the eight-point win

Columbia Blue 80   Royal Blue 29

In what was one of the biggest blowouts of the summer league season, Columbia Blue (Holy Family University) handed winless Royal Blue (Arcadia University) an 80-29 loss as their offense came alive after lying dormant in their last game (a 40-36 loss to Red).

Columbia is now 5-3 and is tied for fourth place heading into the final game of the season next week.  Royal is locked in tenth place at 0-8.

Four players reached double figures for Columbia, led by Linsey Tretter’s 18 points.  Ava Morrow added 17 while Taylor Hinkle and Claire Dougherty had 11 and 10 points respectively.

Olivia Wyckoff led Royal with ten points.

Columbia led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 17-10 lead after one period.  They gradually pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring royal 17-4 in the period as Jessica Riepe’s three-point basket gave Columbia a twenty-point lead 34-14 at the half.

The lead increased to thirty by the end of the third quarter as seven different players on the Columbia squad put points on the board, led by Hinkle’s five points and four apiece from Riepe and Dougherty,

Morrow scored nine of her 17 points in the fourth quarter as Columbia continued to pour on the offense while holding Royal to just one field goal in the quarter with a 23-2 effort over the final ten minutes of action.
