The Guru Report: Red/D2-Chestnut Hill Takes Top Seed on First Place Tie-Break Finish With Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads As Playoffs Set in Philly Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Quirks of the schedule had the front runners playing the lower area of the league plus an additional wrinkle was in the mix but moments of the final night of the regular season in the 10-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League still were interesting at the Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Though defending champion Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads had led the standings most of the summer until last Thursday’s loss to Red/D2-Chestnut Hill, at halftime playing the one team that has gone winless two-seasons, you would not know that had been Royal Blue/D3-Arcadia’s situation, battling in a three-point game until the Devils exploded over the final two quarters 47-13 for a 70-34 win.

But Red propelled off its win over Heather Maroon to handle Kelly Green/Draft Team 1 58-42 and finish in a first place deadlock at 7-2 with the Devils and the No. 1 seed, ahead of the other five also gaining byes to next Tuesday’s Quarterfinals.

Kelly Green is one of two teams designated draft status back to the season’s organization because both its roster and Sun’s roster are not dominated by any D2 or D3 squad which competes in the winter under their collegiate affiliation.

Though losing its final three games, Kelly Green (3-6) couldn’t be surpassed by the three teams under it and thus off its win earlier in the season over Sun, that became a 7th-place tie break for the seventh spot and a first-round game Thursday against 10th-seed Royal Blue (0-9) at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1, which will be the only venue in use Thursday.

The nightcap will feature 9th-seed Orange (1-8) meeting 8th-seed Sun (3-6), which lost to Columbia Blue/D2-Holy Family 66-25, sending the winner into a four-way tie for third.

That deadlock with teams at 6-3 got enlarged, in part, because Pink/D2-Kutztown, which had challenged late for the top seed, was unable to field a team against Black/D2-Jefferson (6-3) either Tuesday or since both had clinched quarterfinal slots Thursday in a makeup game from Tuesday.

Thus, Pink was saddled with the lone 2-0 forfeit this season. Ironically, Black dodged a potential forfeit playing Purple/D2-West Chester early in the season but a makeup last Thursday brought no benefit with Purple rolling to an 83-40 win and completing a night of the iron women going on to also beat Kelly Green 66-59.

The wins kept coming Tuesday night in the other game played, Purple rallying from a third-quarter challenge from Orange to win 79-73.

That game also featured Leah Johnson, a West Chester senior out of Notre Dame High, being not only the sole player of the night to reach the Guru’s 20-points or more individual milestone, she ended up scoring 25, the top nightly performance on the season, eclipsing by a point the 24 turned in by Heather Maroon’s Jess Uber (twice that total and forth overall on the honor), Pink’s Annie Whalen, and Orange’s Natalie Mehl.

In breaking the four-way tie for third and to set the seeds, within the group, Columbia Blue and Purple were 2-1, producing a simple head-to-head in Holy Family’s favor so Columbia Blue is third and Purple fourth. Black and Pink went 1-2 with Tuesday’s forfeit giving Black a 1-1 advantage for fifth and Pink sixth.

The determinations came easily off the season-long Guru’s seed tracker, though the person who was really relieved at the end of the night was long-time commissioner David Kessler, who is now in his 28th season running the league.

The reason is that when the night began, though a long shot, a mathematical chance occurred for a six-way first-place finish, meaning Kessler’s swag budget for awards to the regular season winners besides what goes to the playoff finalists would have taken a major hit.

Looking to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, and we’ll follow this report with a playoffs preview for Thursday, in the early games at 6:30 p.m., on Court 1 Red, the top seed, will face the lowest advancing seed of the two advancing out of the opening round. The other early game features sixth-seed Pink (6-3) meeting 3rd-seed Columbia Blue.

In the night-caps at 7:45 p.m., two-seed Heather Maroon faces the highest of the two advancing seeds from Thursday’s opening rounds, on Court 1, while on Court 2 fourth-seed Purple (6-3) meets fifth-seed Black (6-3).

A re-seed if necessary involving the quarterfinal winners will occur before the semifinals, which will be at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. on Court 1, on July 28. The championship at 7 p.m. on Court 1 with the semifinal winners will be on Tuesday, August second.

As we reported here and the commissioner followed in the newsletter he hands out at every league game, a first for the league will be live-streaming coverage for the first time of the semifinals and final by Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Base Network (SFBN), which has a channel on YouTube. We’ll have links but he has been airing other area events so you can easily search for the link.

When the regular season ended last year, Red, then wearing Orange as its summer identity, was 5-5 but exploded in the playoffs, advancing all the way to the title game against the USciences Grads, then one of two teams from the school prior to the Devils undergrads folding into a merger under D-1 Saint Joseph’s University.

Continuing the tradition of summer success in the league being an omen for the following winter back on campus, Chestnut Hill had its best year, competing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Now at the midpoint of the climate calendar, Red lands the top seed.

Having said all there is to detail here other than the numbers below, here’s Bob with the four-game recaps.

Recaps

Red 58  Kelly Green 42

Ten different players scored for Red Tuesday night as they defeated Kelly Green 58-42 to clinch a share of the regular season championship and the top seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Red finished the regular season at 7-2, tied with Heather Maroon for the best record in the league.

They earned the #1 seed by virtue of their 58-49 win over Heather Maroon last week. Kelly Green finished the regular season at 3-6 and will be the #7 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Avery White led Red with 11 points while Emily Sekerak chipped in ten.  Morgan Sterner, Emily Chmiel and Sara Tamoun added six points apiece.

Katie McGrath paced Kelly Green with ten points while Tamia Wessels added seven.

Red led the game wire-to-wire, utilizing a 14-3 run to close out the first quarter to take a 24-11 lead with seven different players scoring at least one basket.

Kelly Green outscored Red 10-8 in the second quarter, closing out the period on a 5-0 spurt courtesy of two free throws from Alexa Naessens and a three-ball from Wessels.

The draft squad pulled within eight in the third quarter 37-29 before Red used a 7-3 run capped by a Kait Carter basket to lead 44-32 heading into the final ten minutes of play.

Red scored six of the first nine points in the fourth quarter, capped by a basket from Morgan Orloski to lead 50-35 and later expanded the lead to as many as 18, 56-38 before settling in for the 16-point win.

 Purple 79  Orange 73

In the other early game, Orange was primed for an upset while leading the entire third quarter before Purple scored 11 straight points from the end of the third quarter into the fourth to take the lead en route to a 79-73 win.

Purple finishes the regular season with a 6-3 record and in a four-way tie.  The team secured the #4 seed via the league’s tiebreaking procedure.

Orange finished with a 1-8 mark and will hold down the #9 seed.

Leah Johnson led all scorers, pouring in a season best 25 points to pace the Purple squad. Michelle Kozicki added 16 points while Courtney Warley and Alexa Abbonizio chipped in 13 and 12 respectively.

Maria D’Aulerio led Orange with 16 points while Ellie Mack chipped in 15.  Kelly Grant joined her two teammates in double figures with 13 points.

Three lead changes highlighted the first quarter as the two teams were deadlocked at 18-18 after one quarter.

Abbonizio’s three-point basket to open the second quarter gave Purple their first lead since the opening basket at 21-18.

Valerie McGriff followed with a basket to increase the lead to five.

Orange followed with a 16-6 uprising to lead 34-29 only to have Johnson make two baskets to pull Purple back within one 34-33.

Purple regained the lead at 37-36 before Orange closed out the quarter with four straight points to lead 40-37 at halftime.

Purple tied the game twice in the third quarter, the last at 44-44 before Orange went on a 12-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 56-50. However, Purple scored the final four points of the quarter to close within two 56-54 heading into the fourth period.

The run continued into the fourth quarter as Purple scored the first seven points to take a 61-56 lead.

Grant brought Orange within one 61-60 with a three-point basket but would get no closer as Purple started to pull away, using a 14-5 spurt to take a double-digit lead 75-65 late in the game before Orange made it close with an 8-4 run to finish on the short end of a 79-73 score.

Heather Maroon 70  Royal Blue 34

Heather Maroon and Royal Blue battled for the first 20 minutes with neither team leading by more than three points before Maroon woke up in the second half, both on offense and defense, outscoring Royal 47-13 in the second half as they cruised to a 70-34 win.

Maroon finishes the regular season with a 7-2 record, tied for the best mark in the league with Red.

The team will be the #2 seed in the upcoming playoffs having lost to Red last week.  Royal Blue finished the regular season at 0-9 and will be the #10 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Five players reached double figures for Maroon led by Taylor Hamm’s 14 points.  Dayna Balasa made three three-point baskets en route to 13 points while Jess Huber chipped in 12.  Irisa Ye and Jen Kremp has 11 points apiece.

Hannah Rhodes scored ten points for Royal Blue while Scarlett Glasser-Nehls added nine.

Five first quarter lead changes left Royal with a slim 11-10 lead after ten minutes of action.

Ye gave Maroon a 12-11 lead to open the second quarter before a Rhodes three-ball put Royal back on top.

Royal still led 21-19 before Hamm scored the final four points of the quarter to give Maroon a 23-21 lead at the half.

Balasa’s three-ball to open the third quarter started the Maroon offense on the right path as they exploded for 24 points in the quarter.

Meanwhile their defense held Royal to just one field goal and a pair of free throws to finish the quarter with a 47-25 lead.

Maroon continued to expand the lead in the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run capped by a Hamm three-ball to lead 59-27.

Maya Lewis followed with a basket to make the score 59-29 but that would be as close as the Royal squad would come as Maroon finished the game with an 11-5 run.

 Columbia Blue 66  Sun  25

The other late game was also a blowout win as Columbia Blue cruised to a 66-25 victory over Sun.

Columbia Blue finishes with a 6-3 record and in a four-way tie with Purple, Black and Pink.  They secure the #3 seed via the league’s tiebreaking procedure.

Sun finished with a 3-6 mark and will hold down the #8 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Lindsey Tretter was the lone player in double figures for the game leading Columbia with 11 points.

Monee Moore and Claire Dougherty had nine points apiece.

Caitlin Priore led Sun with eight points while Danielle McCurdy chipped in six.

Columbia jumped out to an 8-1 lead and expanded it to 19-8 after one period with Dougherty and Moore combining for nine of the 19 Columbia points as six different players scored for the victors in the period.

Defense took over in the second quarter as Columbia limited Sun to just one basket while producing a 20-2 effort to lead 39-10 at halftime.

Seven different Columbia players scored at least one basket in the quarter with Tretter netting five points on a three-pointer and a layup.

Columbia continued to dominate even as Sun slowed down the pace as the second half wore on, outscoring Sun 16-8 in third quarter and 11-7 in the fourth to secure the win, their second straight in which they held an opponent under 30 points.
