Philly WBB Summer League: Team Black Stays Unbeaten and Nears Playoff Top Seed

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. — Team Black, also known as Division II Jefferson U. In the winter, continued unbeaten to hold first place in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League after beating Team Red, also known as Division II Kutztown 49-42 Tuesday night.

Black (7-0) needs one win in its final two games to clinch the top seed in the playoffs, which begin a week from Thursday with two play-in games to the quarterfinals.

Red (5-2) fell into sole possession of fourth after the loss.

Golden Sun, courtesy of its easy 80-46 win over Sky Blue, also known as Division III Arcadia (1-6), moved into a tie for fifth at 4-3 and the current fifth seed slot while becoming the last of six in the 10-team league to clinch a bye into the quarterfinals.

Black meets Golden Sun Thursday at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1 so it’s still a bit early for longtime commissioner David Kessler to unwrap the awards for the regular season finish ahead of the five games here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Several of the games were closer than the most have been all summer in part because the upper teams in the standings are running into each other while likewise in the bottom part.

For example, in a game between the last two teams yet to taste victory Kelly Green, also known as Division II Chestnut Hill, finally made it to the left side of the results outcomes at 1-6 courtesy of its narrow 62-58 win over Orange (0-7), which is predominantly Division III Penn State-Abington.

In another close game, Royal (6-1) stayed tied for second with Maroon (6-1), one behind Black with two left in the regular season, by edging Lime 69-67, dropping the opponent in a three-way tie for seventh at 1-6.

Maroon (6-1), also known as Division II USciences, had little difficulty handling Purple 89-71 to drop the opposition into a fifth-place tie at 1-6 with Golden Sun and the sixth current seed.

Bob Heller is away on business and was not on hand to offer his usually detailed recaps but Andrew Robinson, a staffer with the Montgomery News chain that includes the Lansdale paper among others in that area, provided his account of the Kelly-Orange game below.

Nightly Individual Performances

It was the most productive night of the season, which began mid-June, in terms of players reaching the Guru’s special 20 or more points collection with six players attaining the plateau, two for the first time, two for the second time following their first in the last action, and two more who have been ongoing special performers.

The top point total of 24 on Tuesday was each reached by La Salle’s Michelle Nichols for Purple in the loss to Maroon and Rachel Millan, a Chestnut Hill sophomore from Lower Moreland, hitting the mark for the first time in leading Kelly Green to its first win.

Hannah Fox, the junior from two-time NCAA Division III champion Amherst out of Penn Charter who has been a regular in the elite highlights, had 21 in Royal’s narrow win, a total matched by Kendall Keyes, who is on the long work-study program at USciences.

A graduate of Lenape Regional in South Jersey, the total marked her initial entry for special citation.

Gabrielle Troisi, the West Chester junior out of Pope John Paul II who reached the 20 plus circle for the first time in her previous game, came back with 20 more for Lime in its narrow loss.

Deja King of La Salle who made her league debut Thursday night and scored 23 for Golden Sun came back with 20 more in the win over Sky Blue.

Looking Ahead

Besides the previous mentioned Black (7-0) vs. Golden Sun (4-3) on Court 1 in the 8:15 nightcap, two other key games feature Red (7-2) against Purple (4-3) at 7 p.m. on Court 1 while Maroon (6-1) and Royal (6-1) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2 will be out for the upper hand in snapping their second place deadlock.

The winner could steal first by taking its final game Tuesday if Black were to suddenly drop its last two.

Another game, which will help determine the play-in pairings, has (Kelly Green (1-6) and Sky Blue (1-6) on Court 1 at 7 p.m. while Orange (0-7) has a chance to get its first win playing Lime (1-6) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 3.

Setting the Seeds and Breaking Ties

If the season ended right now, though inequities would still exist in terms of the complete round-robin, Black being unbeaten gets the top seed.

Maroon and Royal have not seen each other so in their second-place tie for now Maroon has the edge with a win over Red as the best between the two. However, since the duo go head-to-head Thursday, the winner will own a tiebreak if they fall back that way after Tuesday unless a third team begins part of the mix.

Red is alone in fourth while Golden Sun off a previous head-to-head win is fifth and Purple sixth in their tie.

With the two holding a three-game lead over seventh, no one else can climb ahead to a bye since only two games remain.

In terms of setting the seeds out of the seventh-place tie for now, Lime with a win over Kelly Green and no losses in the trio is seventh, Sky Blue, yet to play Kelly Green or Lime, is eighth, and Kelly Green with the loss to Lime is ninth.

Orange, winless, is 10th but could move up for the play-in round, by beating Lime Thursday and Kelly Green Tuesday.

Recaps

Black 49, Red 42

In knocking off another of the upper teams the frontrunner also known as Jefferson U stays unbeaten and holds most tiebreakers with two games remaining.

The only way Black would not finish first is to suddenly lose the last two games and either Maroon or Royal sweep their last two including Thursday’s game against each other.

In Black’s win over Red, no one on Black has yet to score 20 or more points in a game but instead the group offers an overall balanced attack.

Jess Kaminski had 12 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, while Caitlyn Cunningham, Erin Maher, and Haley Meinel each scored eight for Team Black.

Devyne Newman used a trio of three-balls to lead Red with 13 points, Abby Beyer got all 12 of her points off four 3-pointers, while Natalie Kucowski scored 11.

Maroon 89, Purple 77

Staying one game behind the frontrunner, the USciences squad of Maroon had a lot of firepower, Kendall Keyes with a season high 21 points, Jlordan Vitelli got all 18 of her points courtesy of six three-balls, and Colleen Walsh scored 12.

Purple’s Michelle Nicholls with another strong offensive show on the perimeter scored her 24 with six three-pointers fueling the total while Elizabeth Radley and Katie Mayock each scored 12 points.

Royal 69, Lime 67

In the narrow win to stay tied with Maroon for second, a game behind Black, Hannah Fox had three 3-pointers to help collect her total of 21 for the winners, while Emma Dorshimer had four three-balls to help get her to 16 points.

As mentioned earlier, Gabrielle Troisi had another big night for Lime with 20 points, while Nailah Delinois had 17 points and Katie Fisher scored 16.

With Bob Heller away when otherwised he is everywhere at once in the gym, it is unknown whether the difference was a buzzer beater by Royal or Lime got close with a last second shot.

Golden Sun 80, Sky Blue 46

The winners have recovered from their three-game losing streak to win three and stay dangerous as newcomer Deja King scored 20 for Golden Sun and Samantha Brush scored 18.

Courtney Hoffman had 10 points for Sky Blue, Anna Spaschak had seven and eight other players on the team made the scorebook.

Kelly Green 62, Orange 58

It certainly wasn't the easiest way to get it, but Cassie Sebold (Chestnut Hill College) made sure Kelly Green got its first win on Tuesday night.

Orange, which is made up of mainly Penn State-Abington players, used a pair of Gabby Heinsinger (NYU) free throws with 4:00 showing on the fourth quarter clock to break a 53-53 tie.

Both teams that had a couple possessions go for naught before Sebold found CHC teammate Rachael Millan on the left wing for the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:26 left in the contest that put Kelly Green up 56-55.

Sebold, who is heading into her sophomore season at Chestnut Hill, then helped Kelly Green win the battle of the two remaining winless teams by going 5-of-8 at the foul line over the final 1:36 of game time.

Kelly Green's Shannon Glenn (Chestnut Hill) helped keep Orange two possessions away by draining 1-of-2 at the line for a 59-55 lead with 1:13 to go.

Orange had some good looks at the basket late in the game, but couldn't get anything to drop and got just three points at the foul line over the final three minutes.

Millain’s 24 for the winners, one of two top performances across all the games Tuesday, was helped by four 3-pointers, while Sebold got most of her 11 from 7-for-8 on the line.

Heinsinger for Orange had 16 points on four three-balls and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Sydney Barrow and Danielle Skedzielewski each scored 11.
