Philly WBB Summer League: Maroon Gets Revenge In 56-54 Buzzer-Beater Over Defending Champs Gold Sun

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. — As week one of competition in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League came to a close Thursday night, a trend is emerging indicating it could be a season of new faces

Four people reached the 20-points or more nightly individual achievements and three are league rookies with La Salle junior Michelle Nicholls out of New Zealand and Life Center Academy being the top performer in the five games with 34 points to lead Purple to its first win, a 70-59 triumph over Orange, primarily composed of Division III Penn State-Abington.

Though coaches of Division I players are not permitted to see summer action of theirs or any other, Nicholls’ explosion had to be good news for the Explorers’ new mentor Mountain MacGillivray, who needs to find scoring to replace the explosive nights provided by the graduated Amy Griffin.

Elsewhere, in following up her impressive debut Tuesday night with 39 points in Golden Sun’s opening win, Syracuse’s Isis Young, another Life Center Academy grad, remained hot from the outside this time nailing six three-balls on the way to 31 points.

However, in what was a rematch team-wise if not total rosters of last season’s championship game, Maroon, in the only one of the ten matchups this week tightly fought to the finish, got revenge as Colleen Walsh hit the game-winner for a 56-54 triumph as the also-known Division II USciences takes a perfect 2-0 start into next Tuesday’s action here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Becca Margolis, a Lafayette incoming freshman out of Council Rock North, scored 20 for the Red team, dominated by Division II Kutztown, to also finish with a perfect week on the heels of a 95-51 rout of Sky Blue, which is also mostly Division III Arcadia.

Also collecting 20 points was Lydia Kostanzer, a Ursinus junior out of Pennridge, to lead Lime to its first win, a 76-55 triumph over Kelly Green, also known as Division II Chestnut Hill.

The other Thursday night win was posted by Black, also known as Division II Jefferson, which offered a balanced scoring committee to also stay unblemished courtesy of a lopsided 76-37 win over Royal.

With the league down to ten teams this summer, there will be a lot of logjams in the standings until enough games are played to start allowing to list tied teams in the standings in their proper potential projected seed spot for the playoffs.

Week one saw three teams go perfect, as mentioned, in Black, Maroon, and Red, whiile Golden Sun with its first loss, likewise for Royal, combined with initial wins Thursday night from Purple and Lime to create a four-way 1-1 deadlock.

Three teams remained winless in Orange, Sky Blue, and Kelly Green.

Remember, everyone will be in the postseason but the bottom four in the final standings at the end of next month will open in a play-in round to the quarterfinals.

Looking Ahead

In Wednesday’s blog your Guru accurately called the Maroon/Gold Sun as the one likely to be the most competitive.

Looking at Tuesday’s action next week none of the unbeatens will face each other, however Gold Sun, which easily could have still been unbeaten, will face 2-0 Red on Court 2 in one of the 7 p.m. games, while 2-0 Black will meet 1-1 Lime at 8:15 on Court 1.

The other unbeaten, 2-0 Maroon meets 0-2 Kelly Green at 8:15 on Court 2.

Of the remaining action on Tuesday’s schedule, the other 7 p.m. game features 1-1 Royal against 0-2 Orange on Court 1, while the third of three 8:15 p.m. contests has 1-1 Purple against 0-2 Sky Blue on Court 3.

The Gym is at 2950 Turnpike Drive near the 611 exit and if you have to bypass dinner to get to the early games there is a decently priced snack bar offering tasty edibles.

All that said, here’s Bob Heller with the complete breakdown of all five games and then we pick it up again with all the up-to-date performance, standings, and other data with all the team rosters still attached at the bottom of this post.

Recaps

Team Maroon 56 Team Gold Sun 54

Colleen Walsh sank a 15-foot jumper from the left side with just under three seconds remaining to lift Team Maroon, also known as University of the Sciences to a 56-54 victory over Team Golden Sun in an early rematch of last year’s championship game.

Walsh’s basket came after the Sun had scored six straight points courtesy of a pair of Isis Young three-balls to tie the game at 54-54 with 30.9 seconds left and then failed to take the lead when Shira Newman was fouled with just 8.8 seconds left and missed both free throws giving Maroon the ball back with 8.3 seconds following the rebound.

A couple of quick passes after the inbounds and the ball wound up in Walsh’s hands for the game-winner as Golden Sun’s last ditch shot fell well short.

Young led all scorers with 31 points, her second consecutive 30+ point game. Jordan Vitelli led three Maroon players in double figures with 14 points.  Jess Huber and Irisa Ye added ten apiece.

Maroon jumped out to the early lead in the game and actually had their biggest advantage in the first quarter at 18-9 before the Sun started to chip away at the lead.

Three straight three-pointers one by Newman at the end of the first quarter and two by Young to open the second tied the match at 18-18.

After the two teams exchanged baskets, Young gave her team their first lead of the game, 21-20 with a free throw at the 6:25 mark. The lead changed hands three more times ad the quarter wound down with Maroon clinging to a 30-28 lead at the half.

Six lead changes highlighted the third quarter as both teams continued to battle.  No more than two points separated the two squads throughout the third quarter until the final minute of play as Maroon scored the final five points of the period to take a 41-37 lead.

A 5-2 spurt to open the fourth quarter extended the Maroon lead to seven 46-39 only to have the sun counter with a 7-2 spurt to close within two at 48-46.

Ye and Taylor Hamm added baskets to boost the Maroon lead back to six at 52-46 and still led by six with 1:30 left when the Sun made their final push to tie the game before Walsh sank her game winner.

Team Purple 70  Team Orange 59

In the other early game, Team Purple and Team Orange, also known as Penn State Abington battled for three quarters before pulling away in the fourth to earn a 70-59 win.

Michelle Nichols paced the Purple team and led all scorers with 34 points, Jada Smith added 15 and Brady Wassell chipped in 14 points.

Janiah Elum was the lone Orange player in double figures with 13 points.

Purple jumped out to an early lead before came back and took the lead 18-16 with an 11-7 run to close out the opening quarter.

A three pointer by Purple’s Jada Smith opened second quarter gave Purple a slim 19-18 lead before a 6-2 run by the Orange squad saw the lead change hands with Orange taking a 24-21 lead.

Purple battled back to tie the score before Symantha Marrero gave Orange a 36-33 lead at the break with a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining.

Both squads battled throughout the third quarter before Nicholls scored the final five points of the period to give Purple the lead and take a five point lead heading into the final stanza.

Orange battled back within one in the opening minutes of the final quarter before Purple exploded for ten straight points to take a 62-51 lead which they expanded as the clock wound down.

Team Black 76   Team Royal Blue 37

For the second consecutive night, Team Black, also known as Jefferson University, notched a blowout win over their opponent, defeating team Royal Blue 76-37 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Black placed four players in double figures led by Beverly Kum’s 13 points. Caitlyn Cunningham added 12 points while Bridget Arcidiacono and Erin Maher had 11 points apiece.

Royal was paced by Emma Dorshimer’s 13 points.

Black scored the first five points and never looked back, outscoring Royal 29-9 in the opening quarter with Maher doing the bulk of the damage with three three-balls while scoring all of her 11 points in the period.

A bucket from Cunningham just three minutes into the second quarter triggered an 18-0 uprising from Black as they increased their lead to 39, 53-14 by halftime.

Black outscored Royal12-7 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 65-21 while Royal shaved five points off the deficit in the fourth quarter as Black went on to win by 39.

Team Red 95   Team Sky Blue 51

Becca Margolis led three Team Red (also known as Kutztown University) players in double figures as they cruised past Team Sky Blue (also known as Arcadia University) 95-51 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Margolis finished the game with 20 points while Natalie Kucowski added 18.  Kaley Fuegal chipped in 12 for the red squad.

Taylor Dunn was the lone Sky Blue player in double figures with 16 points.

Red led this one wire-to-wire but Sky Blue kept the contest close in the early goings trailing by just four 16-12 with 4:16 left in the opening quarter.  Team Red however closed out the quarter on a 16-4 spurt to lead 31-16 after one period.

Seven different players on the red squad scored in the second quarter as they increased their lead to 54-31 by halftime and 81-40 at the end of three quarters before settling in for 44-point win.

Team Line Green 76  Kelly Green 55

In the final late game of the evening, Lydia Konstanzer led four players in double figures as Team Line Green defeated Team Kelly Green, also known as Chestnut Hill College 76-55 to earn their first win of the season.

Konstanzer scored 20 points to lead all scorers in the game.  Katie Fisher and Ashlyn Wert added 13 apiece and Gabbi Troisi chipped in 12

Shannon Glenn and Lauren Grim led Kelly Green with 17 and 14 points respectively.

A 13-5 run to open the second quarter gave Lime Green a double digit lead at 31-18 before Grim and Glenn brought Kelly Green back within single digits by quarter’s end 35-26.

Lime opened up a 14-point advantage late in the third quarter.  Kelly Green however hung around and clawed their way back, closing out the period with an 8-2 run to trail 55-47 after three periods.

Marisa Morano and Troisi scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, triggering a 15-3 run to Lime’s lead to its biggest margin, at 70-50 with 3:30 left. Kelly Green would come no closer than 18 the rest of the way.
