Phila WBB Summer League: Young’s Debut One for the Ages as Gold Sun And Four Others Claim Easy Openers

HATBORO, Pa. — Clear victories were the theme of Tuesday night across the board in the five games as the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Sanctioned Women’s Summer Basketball League began competition here in Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The winning results showed Black, which is also mostly Division II Jefferson, which topped Kelly Green, mostly Division II Chestnut Hill, 98-46; Royal over Purple, 81-68; Golden Sun over Lime, 83-57; Maroon, which is also mostly Division II USciences, over Sky Blue, which is mostly Division III Arcadia, 80-33; and Red, which is mostly Division II Kutztown, over Orange, which is mostly Penn State-Abington, 68-34.

Three of the winners had big runs with Maroon going 26-0 between the third and fourth quarters, while Red went 23-0 between the second and third, and Black opened its game wrapping things early with a 20-0 surge in the first.

The story of the night, however, was the debut of Golden Sun’s Isis Young, a red-shirt senior at Syracuse, a communications major, who bombed the nets with eight three-pointers on the way to a whopping total of 39 points.

Young, a graduate of Life Center Academy, who currently lives in Berlin across the river in South Jersey, was one of four players to become the first of the season to cross the 20-points or more special mentions for nightly performances.

The other three were Natalie Kucowski, a Lafayette sophomore out of St. Basil, who scored 22 for Red in her team’s win; Emma Dorshimer, a Gettysburg senior out of Jenkintown, who scored 21 for the win by the Steve Flynn-coached Royal team win; and Shannon Glenn, a Chestnut Hill junior out of Archbishop Ryan, who had 20 in Kelly Green’s setback to Black.

Young’s performance was especially noteworthy, as the Guru checked back on his coverage of the league since 2012, a period of seven seasons including this one, with her 39 tying for fourth best among three individuals in that span.

Recent Saint Joseph’s grad Chelsea Woods, in 2016, had totals of 46, 43, and 39, the three best in 2016, while another recent Hawks grad, Amanda Fiorvanti, scored 41 last season to be the top nightly total.

Now to add to this tale with a little inside recusal/non-recusal (no one else to write the top right now) by the Guru.

Two weeks ago, Young was in Washington to take on the media coverage scene of the WNBA Mystics, in part as a mentee to our Rob Knox, who next week will become president of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) at their annual convention at National Harbor below downtown D.C.

A few hours later your Guru and Young ran into each other at Union Station heading back north. In shooting the breeze, the Guru offhandedly mentioned the summer league and she quickly noted she was going to play this season for the first time.

A few days later, she and her dad trained with your Guru, she was previously credentialed, to New York for the WNBA Liberty’s brief return to Madison Square Garden for one of two morning games away from their new home in suburban White Plains.

Since she has to pass the Guru’s residence of the way to the league, the Guru signed her up as his celebrity Uber driver.

In between, Young spent last weekend shadowing retired WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, who was broadcasting a home game for the Indiana Fever, the team the Tennessee great played for her whole pro career.

The two-way ride on opening night relieved commissioner David Kessler, who is in his 25th season running the league and ninth at the current site, from celebrity Uber pickups and dropoffs from the nearby SEPTA Warminster rail line.

Now moving on, as a Guru service, since the data section in the preview had all the team rosters attached, he will keep them for a few nights at the bottom of each of the twice-weekly blogs following the Tuesday and Thursday night competition.

Noteworthy: League Alum Kuester Gaines Alma Mater Staff Promotion

Katie Kuester, who starred on several summer league championship squads in the past, was recently promoted from operations director to assistant coach under Cindy Griffin at her alma mater of Saint Joseph’s.

The vacancy occurred when longtime assistant Stephanie McCaffrey, another former Hawk, decided to step away from the profession.

Kuester was replaced in the operations role by Christina Foggie, a Lenape Regional grad from South Jersey who was a standout at Vanderbilt and served with the Hawks in previous stints as video coordinator and also coached for the Philadelphia Belles AAU organization.

As for Kuester, who retired from the summer competition upon becoming an employee of an NCAA member institution, she has also served as a video coordinator at North Carolina, operations director at Lehigh, and assistant coach at Loyola Maryland under former Hawks assistant Joe Logan.

In other Hawks news, redshirt senior Avery Marz, who is in her third summer with the league, this time playing on Team Purple, during the season received two national most courageous awards — one from the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association and the other, which your Guru oversaw at the presentation at the Women’s Final Four,  from the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Marz fought her way back to collegiate competition last winter after suffering a stroke while moving into the dorms on Hawk Hill to begin her freshman season.

While she played here in the summer, she did not begin her collegiate competition until last season.

Meanwhile, the league has its first La Salle undergrad in several seasons with the addition of Michelle Nicholls, another Life Center Academy grad, who is from New Zealand, and this season will be playing for new coach Mountain MacGillivray, who previously was a longtime aide to South Jersey native Trish Fabbri at Quinnipiac, which has dominated the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in recent seasons.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday night, two games will feature teams against each other that got off to 1-0 starts, while two others will feature four teams who all dropped their openers, and the fifth features a 1-0 against a 0-1.

Perhaps the best game per strengths is Gold Sun against Maroon at 7 p.m. on Court 1, while the other early game matches the Penn State-Abington Orange group against Purple with both playing at 0-1.

In the 8:15 p.m. action, the Jefferson Team Black group will meet Royal on Court 1, each seeking to stay unbeaten. Court 2 features the Sky Blue Arcadia group, which lost Tuesday, against 1-0 Red/Kutztown, while Court 3 has two winless squads in Kelly Green/Chestnut Hill against Lime.

Team Golden Sun 83  Team Lime Green 57

Syracuse University’s Isis Young made here summer league debut a memorable one, pouring in an opening night high of 39 points to lead the new-look defending league champions to the big win.   

Young fueled a 15-1 spurt in the final five minutes of the first quarter to turn a slim one point Lime Green lead into a double digit advantage for Golden Sun, 29-14 by the end of the period.

Golden Sun opened the second quarter with a 10-4 spurt and gradually increased the lead to 26 by halftime 50-24 and 68-34 after three quarters.  

Nia Holland joined Young in double figures with 17 points as the duo combined for over half the Golden Sun offense, with Young connecting on eight three pointers to fuel her offensive outburst.  

Lime Green was led by Ursinus College’s Lydia Konstanzer with 12 points.  Incoming St. Joseph’s freshman Ashlyn Wert added eight points.

Team Royal Blue  81 Team Purple 68

Royal Blue took an early lead and stayed in control the rest of the away in what was the closest contest amongst the five opening night games with an 81-68 win over Team Purple.  

Emily Dorshimer had 21 points to lead all scorers while Lauren Fortescue chipped in 13.

Leading by only two at the end of the first ten minutes, royal Blue took command in the second quarter, scoring eight of the first ten points  leading to a 17-4 run and a 16-point advantage 40-24 in the first seven minutes of the second quarter.

Purple shaved four points off the lead in the final three minutes of the quarter to make the score 44-32 at the break.

Royal’s lead oscillated between 12 and 16 points throughout much of the third quarter until a 7-2 spurt in the final 1:45 upped their lead to its biggest point 65-45 heading into the final ten minutes of play.  

Purple scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 15, 65-50 but would come no closer than 12 late in the game as Royal Blue closed out the double-digit win.

Molly Masciantonio led three Purple players in double figures with 16 points. Jada Smith and Michelle Nichols had 14 and 12 points apiece.

Team Maroon  80 Team Sky Blue    33

Jess Huber scored 15 of her 17 points in the second and third quarters as Team Maroon, also known as University of the Sciences pulled away from Team Sky Blue, also known as Arcadia University 80-33 in their opener.

Leading by just six after one period, Maroon scored the first six points of the second quarter leading to a 14-3 burst to take control of the contest.  

Huber’s four-point play in the final minute highlighted a 10-1 run to close out the quarter with Maroon ahead 46-20.  

The Maroon defense held Sky Blue to just one field in the third quarter, a three-pointer from Joelle Bridges to open the period as they increased their lead with 16 straight points to 62-23 by the end of the quarter.  

The winners extended their run to 26 straight points with a 10-0 spurt to open the fourth quarter before Jamie Manzo’s basket snapped the streak.  

Huber’s 17 points led all scorers while Maroon placed three others in double figures; Kendall Keyes (11 points); Taylor Hamm (10) and Jordan Vitelli (10).   Bridges along with Taylor Dunn led Team Sky Blue with eight points apiece.

Team Black  98 Team Kelly Green   46

Team Black, also known as Jefferson University, scored 20 straight points in the first quarter to turn a close game into a rout as they defeated Team Kelly Green, also known as Chestnut Hill College 98-46 in the second early game Kelly Bolish Gym.

The teams are winter rivals in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Leading 30-10 after one, the Black squad increased the lead to 33 by halftime and continued to increase the lead as the second half wore on.

Caitlyn Cunningham led five black players in double figures with 19 points with Haley Meinel and, Ayoola Oguntuase chipping in 16 and 13 respectively. Alynna Williams add 12 points while  Jess Kaminski chipped in ten.

Shannon Glenn produced nearly half of the Kelly Green output and led all scorers in the game with 20 points.

Team Red 68  Team Orange 34

A slow start by both teams quickly picked up late in the second quarter as Team Red, also known as Kutztown University defeated Team Orange, also known as Penn State Abington, 68-34 in the late game on court one

Orange kept the contest close throughout much of the first quarter and trailed by just five after the first ten minutes of action 13-8  and closed within three 18-15 when Red exploded for nine straight points to close out the quarter and take a 27-15 lead at halftime.

Red extended the lead further, scoring the first 14 points of the third quarter to take a 41-15 lead, completing a run of 23 consecutive points. The two teams exchanged points for the remaining of the quarter as Red took a 51-25 lead into the final period.  

A couple of quick buckets by Natale Kucowski to open the fourth quarter gave Red a 30-point lead 57-27.  Red maintained the 30-point advantage throughout the final period, cruising to the 34-point win.

Kuckowski led all players with 22 points while Kaley Fuegel and Karen Lapkiewicz chipped in 14 and ten points respectively for the Red Squad.  

Janiah Elum was the lone player in double figures for Orange with 12 points.
