Philly Summer League: Black and Short-handed Red Grab Wins and Become Remaining Unbeatens

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. — After a week off for the July 4th holiday and the midway point reached in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League, there was a variety of action as expected Tuesday night when play resumed at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

When everything settled to set up Thursday’s games, it was just Black, also known as Division II Jefferson U in the winter, and Red, primarily known as Division II Kutztown, were just the last two unbeatens among this summer’s 10 teams.

There also was a bit of a revolving door as well as the summer’s first forfeit occurred.

How Black and Red survived was interesting in that Black saw a huge lead nearly evaporate before handing its CACC winter rival Maroon/USciences its first loss 77-72.

Red on the other hand was without the huge Kutztown component, having to work a school camp, but with the only two players hitting the Guru’s 20-or-more points nightly performance — Lafayette sophomore Natalie Kucowski out of Saint Basil with 26 and her Leopards’ incoming freshman teammate Becca Margolis out of Council Rock North with 23 — Red still easily beat Lime 80-56.

Meanwhile, the first forfeit occurred with Golden Sun falling to Royal 2-0 having lost for the rest of summer early sensation Isis Young, who returned to her Syracuse team and is also participating in a prestigious rising media talent broadcast program being run by collegiate and pro women’s basketball analyst LaChina Robinson.

Other absences could be considered the cause of the setback and not Young’s departure. There was a fun pickup game, however, with Royal giving some of its members over to the Golden Sun group.

Meanwhile, though, the Saint Joseph’s Hawks contingent had their first involvement with Avery Marz, incoming freshman Katie Mayock from Conestoga, Nailah Delinois and incoming freshman Devyne Newman arriving on the scene.

Elizabeth Marsicano, an incoming freshman, was also at the gym but was unable to play due to a leg injury.

While Maroon suffered its first loss, Sky Blue in a game between two teams yet to register a victory downed Orange 58-45.

Looking Ahead

With two weeks left before the playoffs, the standings are tightening — remember everyone plays this summer but the bottom four teams will first undergo a play-in round to the quarterfinals.

The key game Thursday night has Maroon (4-1) meeting Red (5-0) on Court 3 at one of the 8:15 competitions. Black is a strong favorite over Sky Blue in one of the two 7 p.m. games, this one on Court 1, while the other early start has 4-1 Royal meeting 0-5 Kelly Green.

The other two late games have Golden Sun meeting winless Orange, while Purple (3-2) looking to move up meets Lime Green (1-4).

Breaking Ties

It may only be two weeks to go on the regular schedule but it is still a long way for things to settle so if the playoffs went into effect Tuesday night the seeds would be this way.

Remember not everyone has met everyone obviously.

Black would be No. 1, breaking the tie with Red because of the win over Maroon.

Royal with a win over Purple, being for now a better win, would be three and Maroon would be the fourth seed.

Purple is alone at five and Golden Sun at six.

Lime and Sky Blue are listed alphabetically and a coin flip would have to snap the deadlock with neither win more valuable then the other.

Likewise, Kelly Green and Orange at the bottom have no wins but also have not played each other yet, so for now it’s an alphabetical listing.

That said, here’s Bob with the recaps.

RECAPS

Team Black  77 Team Maroon  72

Erin Maher and Alynna Williams keyed a rally in the final ten minutes of action as Team Black remained undefeated and handed Team Maroon their first loss of the season in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League 77-72.

Black, also known as Jefferson University, improves to 5-0 while Maroon, alsol known as University of the Sciences, falls to 4-1.

Williams led all scorers with 19 points while Maher added 13.   Jordan Vitelli paced Maroon, scoring all 17 of her points in the second half.  Brigit Coleman added 11 points while Kendall Keyes chipped in ten.

The opening quarter looked like it would be a blowout as black scored the first 14 points and opened up a 23-4 lead but the Maroon defense brought them back into the game as they held Black to just 13 second quarter points allowing their offense to kick it up a notch.

Seven different players scored in the period for Maroon as they outscored Maroon 28-13 to pull within one at the half.

The third quarter provided plenty of excitement for the fans with four lead changes and four ties.

Three-point buckets by Jess Huber and Keyes opened the third quarter and gave Maroon a 41-36 lead.

Williams scored the next eight points for Black to erase the Maroon lead and put her team back on top 44-43.

Following a bucket by Ayoola Oguntuase, Vitelli nailed two consecutive three pointers, her first points of the game and Maroon was back on top 49-46.

Black would tie the game up three times as the quarter wound down before Maher nailed a three-ball as the buzzer was sounding to end the period and give Black a 56-53 lead.

Maher’s bucket energized the Black team who opened the fourth quarter with an 13-4 run to go back up by double digits 69-57 with a pair of three-balls from Williams and buckets from Caitlyn Cunningham and Maher highlighting the run.

Colleen Walsh’s three-ball pulled Maroon within six 70-64 before sending black to the free throw line in the final minute, where they went 7-8 keep their advantage. Vitelli’s three pointer with 12.7 seconds closed the gap to three 75-72 but Cunningham sank two free throws with ten seconds left to end the scoring.

Team Red  80 Team Lime Green  56

Team Red remained undefeated despite missing their entire Kutztown contingent as they exploded for 31 third quarter points and defeated Team Lime Green 80-56.

The Lafayette duo of Natalie Kucowski and Becca Margolis more than made up for Red’s lack of depth, combining to score 49 of the team’s 80 points.

Kucowski notched 26 while Margolis added 23 points. Devynne Newman , a freshman from St. Joseph’s University made her summer league debut with ten points.

Gabby Troisi, a junior out of West Chester University led Team Lime Green with 19 points while Ashlyn Wert from St. Joseph’s added 11.

It was no cake walk however for Red in the first two quarters as Lime scored 11 of thre first 14 points and jumped out ot a double digit lead 18-7 on a Wert layup in the first seven minutes of action.

Red came back with nine straight points to close outthe quarter (five from Margolis) and trailed by two 18-16.

Kucowski’s two free three throws early in the second gave Red their first lead of the game at 21-20.  Katie fisher countered with a bucket to put Lime back on top by one before Red went on a 14-4 tear to take a nine point lead 35-26 with a minute left.

Nailah Delinois of Team Lime scored five of the final seven points in the quarter to cut the Red lead to six 37-31 at the break.

Red came out on fire in the third quarter, scoring 19 of the first 21 points with Michelle Lalor and Abby Beyer each connecting for two three-pointers and Kucowski adding five more in the first five minutes of action.

Red outscored Lime 31-8 in the quarter to take a 69-39 lead heading into the final ten minutes of action.

In the fourth quarter Red increased their lead to 31 at 78-47 before Lime finished on a 9-2 run to cut the final deficit to 24, 80-56.

Team Sky Blue  58 Team Orange 45

Team Sky Blue and Team Orange were both looking for their first win Tuesday when they faced each other.  Sky’s balanced scoring and defensive pressure in the second half led them to a 58-45 win over the Orange squad.

Sky, also known as Arcadia University, was led by Taylor Fritz who scored 15 points.  Camille Menns added 11 while Joelle Bridges chipped in ten.

Sydney Barrow was the lone player in double figures for Orange, also known as Penn State Abington with 18 points.

Sky Blue used a late run in the first quarter to take an 11-6 lead and increased the margin to 19-10 with three minute left.  Orange however battled back with an 8-4 run over the final 2:19 to keep the deficit within two possessions, 23-18 at the half.

Both squads slightly picked up the offense in the third quarter while Sky Blue’s defense went to work, holding Orange to just 11 third quarter points.  Sky Blue’s offense scored nearly as many points (20) in the third quarter as they had in the first two combined (23).

Barrow led an Orange push in the fourth quarter but the team would come no closer than eight points and Sky held on for the 57-45 win.

Team Purple  77 Team Kelly Green  26

Team Purple led this contest wire-to-wire, scoring the first nine points as they routed Team Kelly Green 77-26.

La Salle University’s Michelle Nicholls paced the Purple squad and led all scorers with 16 points.  Elizabeth Radley, a junior from Holy Family University added 15 points while St. Joseph’s University’s Katie Mayock chipped in ten points.

Lily Kuntz and Lauren Crim led Kelly Green with six points apiece.  Kuntz was making her summer league debut after returning from studying abroad in London, Paris and Madrid.

Purple scored the first nine points and never looked back, opening a 37-9 lead at the half and a 58-16 lead by the end of the third quarter and continued to increase the margin over the course of the fourth quarter.
