The Guru Report: Black/Jefferson and the Maroon/USciences/Pink Undergrad/Alumnae Squads Take Philly/Suburban League Openers

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

Hatboro, Pa. – Smiles were plentiful and from the many of those fully vaccinated teams and spectators from the coronavirus easily showing Thursday night as the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League after missing 2020 returned to action at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

With commissioner/director David “Deuce” Kessler absent from opening night to undergo a minor medical procedure Friday, assistant Steve Michielli and the Chestnut Hill Local’s Tom Utescher were seated at the distribution table handing out playing jerseys to most of the 98 registered players on the eight teams that got under way in a pair of doubleheaders on the two courts.

The snack bar was up and running though not fully stocked.

Our colleague Bob Heller was poised to be on top of the action to offer game detail following this lede written by your Guru.

Of the seven collegiate teams on the two courts, only Team Red, aka Division 3 Arcadia, playing a league-only schedule last February, had seen action since March 2020 when the sports world was slammed shut along with most everything else swallowed by the onset of the pandemic.

The eighth team is an alumae contingent of D2 USciences competing as Pink, which took one of the two opening games beating Royal, aka D3 Ursinus 64-55, while the undergrad D2 Devils squad competing as Maroon in one of the mismatch nightcaps beat Red, aka D3 Arcadia 73-32.

Ironically, the two contingents from Southwest Philly will clash in the only matchup of 1-0 teams next Thursday playing on Court 1 in one of the opening tips at 6:30 p.m.

For the USciences bunch it is the start of a bittersweet year with the school to be merged in 2022 with D1 Saint Joseph’s of the Atlantic 10 and the Devils Sports programs to be folded.

In the other wipeout in the nightcaps, Kelly, aka D2 Kutztown routed Orange, aka D2 Chestnut Hill 80–42.

“Perhaps there will be enough notoriety from all this that by next summer we might see interest back up to field the 10-13 contingents that have competed in the past,” said Steve Flynn, who runs the venue and has coached in past seasons.

In fact, your Guru is in conversations with the local network which airs a slew of area high school and collegiate sports about potentially televising the semifinals and/or final in early August.

Flynn was looking fit, having recovered from suffering a stroke several months ago.

The fourth game of the night was one of the openers as Black aka D2 Jefferson topped Sky Blue aka D2 Holy Family 73-49.

“It’s funny how this is working out,’’ said Jefferson coach Tom Shirley who was in the house to watch his team as likewise Holy Family coach Bernadette Laukaitis and USciences coach Jackie Hartzell were also spotted.

‘’The two teams that played for the Central Atlantic Athletic Championship picking up,’’ said Shirley.

Jefferson in what was to be the last game until Thursday night won its 12th straight leading to the CACC croen though Laukaitis came into that game off quick success.

Shortly after the then-associate head coach to her Holy Family coach Mike McLaughlin at Penn was named to the head coaching job at her alma mater the HF summer squad in 2019 upset Jefferson to win the last Philly summer league event until Thursday  night.

With only player points kept as stats, the Guru’s outstanding performance tracker in these posts saw Royal’s Dana Bandurick, a Council Rock North grad who has been with Ursinus and is an incoming Swarthmore junior, as the night’s top scorer with 22 points in the Royal setback.

The magic milestone was also reached by USciences’ incoming senior Taylor Hamm in the Maroon win as the Perkiomen Valley High grad scored 20.

In week two next Thursday of the seven-nights regular season slate, besides the USciences’ Pink/Black showdown at 6:30 on Court 1, Black (1-0) will meet Red (0-1) on Court 2.

The nightcaps at 7:45 p.m. have Royal, the D3 Ursinus bunch, facing Orange aka D2 Chestnut Hill on Court 1, each looking for their first win at 0-1, while Kelly or D2 Kutztown (1-0) will meet the Sky Blue (0-1) squad on Court 2.

Now Bob takes over the game section and we’ll be back with the stats.
