Philly WBB Summer League: Unbeaten Black, Maroon, Red and Golden Sun Advance to the Semifinals

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. — Team Black, also known as D2 Jefferson University, got its playoff hunt for a first-ever Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League title under way Tuesday night in the same manner as things went during the regular nine-game schedule, getting a lopsided 78-47 win over 10th-seeded Lime in quarterfinal action.

Lime went 1-8 through the regular season but as the 10th seed easily upset 7th-seeded Kelly Green, also known as D2 Chestnut Hill, in one of the two play-in games in last Thursday’s opening round.

Black cruised through the previous two months unbeaten to go 9-0 and once again, as was the case all summer, a balanced attack did the job without any one player reach the Guru’s nightly 20-points or better special performance citation.

In the other three games at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, second-seeded Maroon, also known as D2 USciences, easily downed 8th-seeded Sky Blue, also known as D3 Arcadia, 76-33, after having finished second 8-1, the only loss coming to Black, it’s CACC winter rival.

Sky Blue tied Kelly Green at 7-2 but off a head-to-head loss was dropped to the eighth seed and then eliminated Orange, also known as Penn State-Abington, the ninth seed, in the other play-in game Thursday to the Quarterfinals.

In the closest finish in the quarterfinals, third-seeded Team Red, also known as D2 Kutztown, took down third-seeded Purple 60-50 as Natalie Kucowski of Lafayette scored 20 points.

The sophomore from St. Basil has been one of the top performers all summer hitting the 20-point standard several times. Red finished 7-2, the only two losses being to the higher seeded Black and Maroon squads.

Purple, which was sixth seed at 4-5, got 21 points from incoming Saint Joseph’s freshman Katie Mayock out of Conestoga.

By seed, the other of the four games Tuesday was an upset with No. 5 Golden Sun beating No. 4 Royal 71-56 as Sun’s Myonie Williamson, a D3 Cabrini player out of Radnor, had 23 points, while Royal’s Hannah Fox, a sophomore with two-time NCAA Division III champion Amherst out of Penn Charter, had 21 for Royal to also finish accounting for everyone in the Quarters who scored 20 or more points.

It was the first time the two teams met because Golden Sun (5-4) comitted one of the only two forfeits over the summer when previously scheduled to meet Royal.

Looking Ahead

The semifinals Thursday night offer excitement with No. 1 Black meeting No. 5 Sun at 7 p.m. on Court 1 before second-seeded Maroon meets third-seeded Red on the same court at 8:15 p.m.

The championship is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Court 1.

During the season in the previous matchups of the semifinals opponents, Black topped Golden Sun 87-70 on July 19 while Maroon beat Red 58-46 a week early on July 12.

In the Maroon-Red game, Jordan Vitelli for the winners had 14 points, while Kendall Keyes scored 11 and Taylor Hamm scored nine.

On Red, Kucowski and Becca Margolis, a Lafayette incoming freshman from Council Rock North each scored 16 points.

The key to win was Maroon’s 15-2 run for a 38-9 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter, enabling the USciences to withstand several surges from Red later on, one of which got them within 12 late in the game off a 13-2 run.

In the Black win over Golden Sun, five Jefferson players scored in double figures to give Black a clinch for their first-ever regular season title.

Beverly Kum had 17 points, Caitlyn Cunningham scored 14, Velez Jackson scored 11, while Erin Maher and Haley Meinel each scored 10.

Golden Sun’s Stephanie Petery scored 16, Samantha Brusha scored 15, and Nia Holland, Myonie Williamson, and Julia Buchman each scored 11.

Black jumped to a 13-2 advantage that extended to 22-9 at the end of the first quarter and led all the way, denying Golden Sun to ride any counter-surge to a deficit below double digits.

Now, here’s Bob with the recaps and all the team rosters are at the very bottom of this report, as they have been on the previous ones.

Recaps

#1 Team Black  78 #10 Team Lime Green 47

Top Seed Team Black had little trouble advancing to the semi-finals, cruising to a 78-47 win over the tenth seed Team Lime Green.

Black, also known as Jefferson University, will face fifth seed Golden Sun in the first of two semi-final games on Thursday.

Beverly Kum led three players in double figures for Team Black with 14 points.  Caitlyn Cunningham added 11 while Ayoola Oguntuase chipped in ten points.

The top three scorers for Lime Green all hail from West Chester University with juniors Gabby Troisi and Katie Fisher leading the way with 14 and 10 points respectively.  Senior Rylee Power added seven points.

Black scored the first seven points and jumped out to leads of 11-2, 20-4 and 28-7 by the end of the first quarter getting solid contributions from Oguntuase, Sabria Lytes, Alynna Williams and Bridget Arcidiacono.

Kum scored nine of her team high 14 points in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Black went on an 11-0 tear to take a 39-7 lead, their biggest of the game. Lime rallied in the latter part of the second quarter with a 14-4 run to close the gap to 43-21 by halftime.

The lead oscillated between 21 and 26 points for much of the third quarter as Lime Green could not string together a big streak to close the gap until the final two minutes.

Following a Cunningham three-ball, Lime ran off eight straight points to bring the deficit under 20 points for the first time since late in the first quarter, 59-41.

Black outscored Lime 19-6 in the final quarter to finish off the 31-point win.

#3 Team Red 60   #6 Team Purple 50

It took nearly two quarters for the third seed Team Red to overcome their shaky start before they pulled away late  to earn a 60-50 win over sixth seed Team Purple in the other early quarterfinal game at Kelly Bolish Gym Tuesday night.

Team Red will play second seed Team Maroon in the second semi-final game on Thursday.

Red, whose squad is a mix of six Kutztown players, four Division I players and a pair of players hailing from Division III schools, had only one player reach double figures on the night; sophomore Natalie Kucowski from Lafayette College.

Kucowski scored 20 points. Elizabethtown senior Abby Beyer had nine points while a pair of St. Joseph’s University freshman Devyne Newman and Elizabeth Marsicano scored eight and seven respectively. Kutztown junior Karen Lapkiewicz also had seven points.

Another St. Joe’s freshman Katie Mayock led Team Purple with 21 points.  Holy Family University sophomore Jada Smith added 11.

Purple jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening quarter before Newman cut the lead to 11-7 with a three-pointer at quarter’s end.

Smith opened the scoring in the second quarter giving Purple a six point lead before Red countered with a 14-6 spurt capped by a three-point bucket from Kucowski to take their first lead of the game at 21-19 with 4:51 left in the quarter.

Lapkiewicz made it back-to-back threes and Red held a five point advantage 24-19 with 3:05 left.  Purple rallied with a 7-2 spurt with Julia Radley’s three-ball with 58 seconds left tied the game at 26-26 heading into the halftime break.

Red scored first in the third quarter and would open up a five point lead at 35-30.  Purple scored the next six points to take a 36-35 lead with 3:10 left.

The lead changed hands two times in the final 1:38 before Molly Masciantonio’s three-point bucket broke a 39-39 tie and put Purple on top 42-39 heading into the final quarter.

Newman and Kucowski scored back-to-back baskets to open the fourth quarter and give Red the slim lead at 43-42.

Elizabeth Radley’s two free throws put Purple back on top for the moment before consecutive three-balls from Newman and Becca Margolis gave Red a five point advantage, 49-44.

Mayock’s basket closed the gap to 49-46 but that would be as close as they would come. Red scored the next seven points to increase their lead to double figures 56-46 with 4:22 left and both teams exchanged points  the rest of the way to close out the ten point win.

#2 Team Maroon 77   #8 Team Sky Blue 33

Second seed Team Maroon turned in another balanced scoring effort and produced another three-point clinic knocking down 12 long balls as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball league playoffs for the fourth consecutive year with a 76-33 win over Team Sky Blue.

Maroon, also known as Division II University of the Sciences will face third seed Team Red in the second semi-final game of Thursday.

Colleen Walsh led Maroon with 15 points and three three-point field goals.  Jordan Vitelli added two three-balls and had 12 points. Bridget Coleman added nine points while Jess Huber chipped in eight.

All 11 players on the Maroon squad scored at least two points. Collectively their 12 three-pointers marks the third straight game that the Maroon “Bomb Squad” has knocked down 10 or more in a game.  Seven different players made at least one three-pointer.

Sky Blue, also known as Division III Arcadia University, was led by Camille Menns and Taylor Dunn who scored nine points apiece.

It was Sky Blue that held an early 7-5 lead before Maroon went on a 10-3 run in the final 2:23 of the quarter to take a 15-10 lead.

Huber opened the second quarter with her second triple of the game, starting a 9-0 run to put Maroon firmly in control 24-10. The Maroon defense limited Sky Blue to just three field goals in the quarter as they built a 38-17 lead at halftime.

Menns scored the first basket in the third quarter to bring Maroon’s lead under 20 at 38-19 but the Maroon offense kicked it up a notch, going on a 16-2 tear to lead 54-21 with three minutes left in the quarter.  Vitelli scored Maroon’s final eight points of the period as they lead 62-27 entering the final quarter.

Sky Blue outscored Maroon 6-2 to open the final quarter and cut the lead to 64-33.  Maroon scored the final 12 points to make the end result 76-33.

#5 Team Golden Sun 72   #4 Team Royal Blue 57

Team Golden Sun kept their hopes for a third straight league championship alive as they pulled away late to defeat Team Royal Blue, 72-57 in the final quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

Golden Sun, who won the 2017 title as Team White and 2016 crown as Team Gold, has a different and younger configuration this season as veterans Michelle McCaughern (LaSalle ’12), Jasmine Elum (Bethune Cookman ’12) and last year’s MVP Amanda Fiorvanti (St. Joe’s ’17) all hung up their sneakers as did coach Keith Wood.

They will face top seed Black, also known as Jefferson University, in the first semi-final game on Thursday.

Myonie Williamson out of Cabrini University led Golden Sun with 23 points.  Lafayette senior Nia Holland added 14 points while Julia Buchman from Mercyhurst University chipped in 12.

Amherst University junior Hannah Fox led Royal Blue with 26 points while Emily Walls (Moravian ’19) and Emma Dorshimer (Gettysburg ’19) scored 13 and ten points respectively.

Royal used a 14-4 run over the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a 23-13 lead.  Golden Sun opened the second quarter with an 8-2 spurt to close the gap to 25-21.

Royal led by five 29-24 with 2:24 left before buckets from Buchman and Holland narrowed the deficit to one point 29-28.  Fox sank a basket as time was expiring to give Royal a 31-28 lead at halftime.

Holland’s traditional three-point play capped a 7-0 start to the third quarter by Golden Sun as they took their first lead since the 5:58 mark of the first quarter, 35-31.

The golden Sun defense limited Royal Blue to just eight points in the period and with two buckets from Williamson as the quarter was winding down, took a 44-36 lead into the final stanza.

Golden Sun continued to stretch the lead as the fourth quarter progressed, outscoring Royal 20-7 over the first six minutes to take their biggest lead at 64-43.

Back-to-back three pointers from Dorshimer and Fox cut the lead to 64-49. Two possession later, another fox three-ball made the score 66-52 with just under 90 seconds remaining.  Ashley Wood, now player/coach of the Golden Sun Team made four free throws in the final 90 seconds and Williamson added the last of her 23 points to seal the 15-point win.
