Philly WBB Summer League: A 1-2 Shown Set as Black (D2-Jefferson) and Maroon (D2-USciences) Advance to Championship

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. — Five months after Maroon in its D2 role as USciences made it a three-game sweep over Black in its D2 role as Jefferson University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship, which includes the home-and-home action, both teams have battled to another championship showdown, this time for the title of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League.

But unlike the winter meetings between the Rams and Devils, Black will be the Top Seed Tuesday night and unbeaten at 9-0 plus 2-0 to date in the playoffs at 7 on Court 1 at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

It’s the first time that Black has both gone unbeaten from the season opener in June for its first No. 1 seed and made it to the championship game after topping fifth-seeded Golden Sun 73-61 in one of the two semifinals Thursday night.

Maroon (8-1), whose only loss was 77-72 to Black on July 10 after the league took a week off for the July Fourth holiday, eliminated third-seeded Red, also known as D2 Kutztown University, 51-39, to advance to the title game for the fourth straight year, though the USciences bunch have yet to prevail in the summer.

Red went 7-2 in the regular season, losing only to Black and USciences.

In an oddity, no one in either game reached the Guru’s 20 points or more individual citation, which was a mark that eluded Black all year, but certainly no shame considering the overall balanced attack.

In the playoffs to date, Thursday’s semifinalists were among the six teams with byes and Black advanced last Tuesday, 78-47, over 10th-seeded Lime, which upset 7th-seeded Kelly Green, also known as D2 Chestnut Hill, in the two-game play-in round.

Maroon swamped No. 8 Sky Blue, 77-33, after the D3 Arcadia group had taken the other play-in game over No. 9 Orange, also known as D3 Penn State-Abington.

Red eliminated No. 6 Purple in the quarterfinals 60-50 and fifth-seeded Golden Sun (5-4) technically upset No. 4 Royal 72-57, though both teams could be seen even up going into the contest.

The Semis Recap

#1 Team Black 73   #5 Team Golden Sun 61

On Thursday, Black and Golden Sun played the opening in the semifinals twin bill and a late third quarter run put top seed Team Black in control of their own destiny.

Senior Erin Maher led all scorers with 17 points, pacing a well balanced Black scoring attack.

Alynna Williams added 13 points while Jessica Kaminski chipped in 12.  Sabria Lytes had eight points.

Golden Sun was led by Lafayette College senior Nia Holland’s 16 points.   Samantha Brusha, an incoming freshman at Millersville University added 13 points while Julia Buchman out of Mercyhurst University chipped in 12 points.

It was a 9-0 run with 1:26 left in the third quarter that proved to be the decisive time frame for Team Black.

The squad just had their lead cut to one at 49-48 before Kaminski started the run with a free throw and followed with two more with 40 seconds left.  Beverly Kum capped the run with a traditional three-point play to give black a 58-48 lead heading into the final quarter.

Black added an 8-2 spurt to open the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to its widest margin, 66-50.  Sun cut the lead down to 12 at 69-57 but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Earlier in the game, Golden Sun battled back from a six point deficit to tie the game at the end of the first quarter and take their first lead, 16-14 on two Shira Newman free throws as the second quarter opened.

The lead changed hands six more times before the end of the period with neither team leading by more than three points.  Golden Sun took over the lead at halftime 33-31.

The lead change pattern continued in the first two minutes of the third quarter with three more changes before Black opened a four point lead at 39-35.

Ashley Wood’s three-point bucket for Golden Sun tied the game at 41-41 before Black ran off eight straight, capped by a Williams three-ball to lead 49-41.

Golden Sun countered with seven straight points to close to 49-48 before Black took control and pulled away.

#2 Team Maroon  51 #3 Team Red   39

Jess Huber was the lone player in double figures for Maroon with 11 points including three three-point field goals.

Brigit Coleman also made three three-pointers for nine points and Kendall Keyes made two three-balls while also scoring nine.

Ten of the 11 players on Maroon scored at least one point. The team also made ten three-point field goals, marking the fourth consecutive game with ten or more ‘threes’ made.

Taylor Thames, a senior from Kutztown University, led Team Red with ten points. Karen Lapkiewicz, a KU junior added eight points while Lafayette College sophomore Natalie Kucowski chipped in six.

Four three-pointers by Maroon in the first seven minutes of action helped produce a 19-2 lead and forced Red to call a timeout.  After the timeout, Red scored four straight to end the quarter, closing the gap to 19-6.

Coleman’s second three-ball of the game at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter pushed Maroon’s lead to 24-6 while their defense went on to limit Red to just three field goals in the quarter as they took a 33-15 at halftime.

Maroon expanded the lead in the third quarter to 23 points, 43-20 with a 10-5 run to start the period.  Red however, fought back closing out the quarter on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 18, 46-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Red limited Maroon to just two baskets and five points in the fourth quarter but could not come any closer than 11 points in the final six minutes.

The Maroon squad chewed up the clock on every possession in the final six minutes, slowing the pace down to a crawl.

Thames basket with 2:37 left closed the gap to 11 at 48-37 before Maroon’s Jordan Vitelli connected for the team’s tenth three-pointer of the game in what was their shortest possession of the quarter (25 seconds) to up the lead to 51-47.

Red added another basket at the 1:52 mark to round out the scoring as Maroon held the ball for most of the remaining time.

Recapping  Black’s 77-72 Regular Season Win Over Red

Erin Maher and Alynna Williams keyed a rally in the final ten minutes of action as Team Black remained undefeated and handed Team Maroon their first loss of the season in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League 77-72.

Black, also known as Jefferson University improves to 5-0 while Maroon, also known as University of the Sciences falls to 4-1.

Williams led all scorers with 19 points while Maher added 13.

Jordan Vitelli paced Maroon, scoring all 17 of her points in the second half.  Brigit Coleman added 11 points while Kendall Keyes chipped in ten.

The opening quarter looked like it would be a blowout as black scored the first 14 points and opened up a 23-4 lead but the Maroon defense brought them back into the game as they held Black to just 13 second quarter points allowing their offense to kick it up a notch.

Seven different players scored in the period for Maroon as they outscored Maroon 28-13 to pull within one at the half.

The third quarter provided plenty of excitement for the fans with four lead changes and four ties.  Three point buckets by Jess Huber and Keyes opened the third quarter and gave Maroon a 41-36 lead.

Williams scored the next eight points for Black to erase the Maroon lead and put her team back on top 44-43.  Following a bucket by Ayoola Oguntuase, Vitelli nailed two consecutive three pointers, her first points of the game and Maroon was back on top 49-46.

Black would tie the game up three times as the quarter wound down before Maher nailed a three-ball as the buzzer was sounding to end the period and give Black a 56-53 lead.

Maher’s bucket energized the Black team who opened the fourth quarter with an 13-4 run to go back up by double digits 69-57 with a pair of three-balls from Williams and buckets from Caitlyn Cunningham and Maher highlighting the run.

Colleen Walsh’s three-ball pulled Maroon within six 70-64 before sending black to the free throw line in the final minute, where they went 7-8 keep their advantage.  Vitelli’s three pointer with 12.7 seconds closed the gap to three 75-72 but Cunningham sank two free throws with ten seconds left to end the scoring.
