Philly Summer League: Gold Takes 1st Besting Pink; Three Teams Win in Overtime
Breaking updates early wed evening to reflect suspensions from fight in the Maroon- Ash aka West Chester/Millersville game and to add a high scorer for Royal Blue in Maggie Locke
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
HATBORO, Pa. -- Defending champion Gold is the sole unbeaten team in the stretch drive after handing Pink, also known as predominantly Division III Scranton, a 56-47 setback Tuesday night in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renengades in lower Bucks County.
But Gold (10-0) still needs either a win itself or a loss by Pink (9-1) in the final two remaining nights of the regular season – Thursday and next Tuesday – to clinch the top seed in the eight-team playoffs out of the 13 squads that will get underway with quarterfinal action a week from Thursday.
Right now the two leaders can’t finish worse than fourth and on Thursday each will face one of the two teams tied for third two games behind them.
Tuesday night’s action in the six-game, three-doubleheader slate featured three overtime encounters, one of which had an altercation resulting in suspensions to three players in various penalties with commissioner David Kessler informing each that this is the first fight in a game he has had to deal in his 22 years running the league.
While the deadlock at the top between was broken, Neon Green (8-2) and Maroon (9-2), the teams tied for third, each won their games – Neon Green with an easy 68-53 triumph over winless Royal Blue (0-11), also known as Penn State-Abington, while Maroon, also known Division II West Chester, edged Ash Grey, also known as Division II Millersville, 51-47 in overtime in a game in which tempers evolved into physicality.
Neon Green holds a head-to-head tiebreak with Maroon but each has to face one of the teams in front of them on Thursday night. Both teams clinched playoff participation with their Tuesday night wins.
On Wednesday, commisioner Kessler banned Ash's Tyisha White, a Millersville senior out of Octorara High, for the rest of the season, including potential playoffs, for her role, while on Maroon, West Chester senior Tiffany Johnson out of Cheltenham High was suspended two games -- the rest of the regular season -- for coming off the bench and Golden Rams junior Brooke Mullen out of Boyertown was suspended for Thursday's game.
None of the suspended players are permitted in the gym during their penalties.
In informing each player, citing the frowning by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the NCAA and the summer league on such altercations, including coming to the defense of a teammate in terms of Johnson's actions, Kessler went on to note, "I'm sure you know that this is just a summer league where women can stay fit, have some fun, and hone their skills for the upcoming collegiate season. This is my 22nd season running the league and the first fight I've witnessed."
Meanwhile, Sapphire Blue (5-5), also known as Division II East Stroudsburg, moved up into a fifth-place tie with idle Purple (5-5), also known as Division II USciences, by thumping Black, also known as Division II Philadelphia University, 49-33.
While reality probably says one thing based on the remaining games, the mathematics for the moment couldn’t lift the gates just yet to allow playoff entry for Purple and Sapphire Blue.
And only a game behind them sits a three-way tie for seventh among Ash Grey (4-6), Black (4-6), and Forest Green (4-6), also known as Division II Holy Family, which took a must-win 85-84 overtime triumph over Kelly Green (3-7), which extended the extra period on Jenna Swope’s three-ball, only to fall at the buzzer on Alexandria Sommers’ game-winner.
Red (4-7) in 10th a half-game behind the three-way seventh-place group, I still alive by the math following an upset 69-67 overtime loss to Orange (2-8), which is technically also still in playoff contention but also probably needs some help.
Right now a potential major traffic looms to gain the lower seeds when the regular season ends but the schedule is such that perhaps the threat of repeating last year’s giant tangle is not as menacing.
Individually, in terms of players gaining 20 or more points, five made the barrier, three in the same game, but at the top was another booming night for Villanova junior Megan Quinn, who rushed from Wildcats coach Harry Perretta’s summer practice session – a recent allowance for schools by the NCAA – to score 30 to spur the win by Neon Green.
Chelsea Woods, a Saint Joseph’s sophomore, matched the total in her game with 30 but it went for naught in the Red upset defeat to Orange.
Katie O’Hare had 23 points to help Forest Green to its slim win over Kelly Green, which got 24 points from Mary Ellen McCollum and 22 from Swope, who forced the overtime.
Looking Ahead
There are different things at stake in Thursday’s games, one of which was spoken to and will probably help decide how the top four teams would meet in the semifinals if they all advance.
Maroon, tied for third with Neon Green, meets second-place Pink at 7 p.m. on Court 3, and with a win could tie for second, though Neon Green could make it a three-way by upsetting Gold in a game that begins at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2.
Neon Green will wrap up with Black next Tuesday while Maroon will meet Kelly Green.
Red, which has just one game left before serving the final bye of the season next Tuesday – Royal Blue is off Thursday, has a must-win meeting with Ash Grey at 7 p.m. on Court 1, though Ash Grey is in the same situation needing a likewise triumph to get closer to the postseason.
Ash Grey will finish up Tuesday meeting Orange, which may be either still alive or looking to be a spoiler that it has become of late. Orange and Forest Green in a must-win for each will tip Thursday at 7 p.m. on Court 2.
Forest Green finishes Tuesday playing Maroon, which will still be fighting for the best attainable seed.
Purple comes out of its bye to meet Black, its wintertime Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1, and Black, which finishes with Neon Green Tuesday, absolutely needs the win while Purple needs it to avoid falling backwards after losing out for the playoffs last season in the massive tie-break at the finish.
Purple gets Royal Blue Tuesday so a win over Black could put the squad in good shape considering Sapphire Blue, which meets Kelly Green at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, finishes up with Gold on Tuesday.
Neither Purple nor Sapphire Blue can move up beyond their deadlock but each runs into trouble with losses Thursday night, more so Sapphire Blue in terms of the schedule.
The entire season in spreadsheet style is listed at the bottom with each team listed with all of its opponents and wins or losses marked. Teams in ties are grouped together.
Recaps
Gold 56, Pink 47: In the battle of previously both unbeaten squads, the defending champion Gold team spread the wealth with nine different players scoring led by Jasmine Elum, the 2012 Bethune-Cookman graduate out of Bodine High, who had 15 points.
Adashia Franklyn, a Saint Joseph’s sophomore out of Bayard Rustin, was next with eight points. Her mother, by the way, is former Temple great Marilyn Stephens, a Gratz High grad who is also a Big Five Hall of Famer and attended the game.
Alex Smith, a 2014 Holy Cross graduate out of the Peddie School in Lawrenceville, N.J., and Taylor Bryant, a Penn senior out of Upper Dublin who had to be helped off the court after injuring her knee in the second quarter, each had seven points.
Pink got 13 points out of Alyssa Monaghan, a Saint Joseph’s freshman out of Bonner/Prendie, but no one else scored in double figures, though eight got into the books. Four players scored six or seven points each among Saint Joseph’s senior Sarah Fairbanks, Scranton senior Jaclyn Gantz out of Haverford, UNC Wilmington sophomore Johanna McMillan out of Delaware’s Sanford School, and Sarah Payonk, a Scranton junior out of Spring-Ford High.
Neon Green 68, Royal Blue 53: Fueling Megan Quinn’s 30 points were four three-balls on Neon Green while Maureen Leahy, a Bryant senior out of Cardinal O’Hara, scored 15 points.
Maggie Locke, an incoming Holy Cross freshman out of Spring-Ford High topped Royal Blue with 16 points. Elizabeth Jones, a PSU-Abington sophomore out of St. Hubert, scored 11 points and had three treys while Tyniqua Henderson, a PSU senior out of Dobbins High, and Jiana Clark, a PSU junior out of Cheltenham, each scored 10 and Clark also had three 3-pointers.
Orange 69, Red 67, overtime In yet another upset for Steve Flynn’s predominantly mix of Division III players, Mackenzie Carroll, a Colgate freshman out of Central Bucks West, scored 17 points and had three treys, while Lauren Rothfeld, a Salisbury junior out of Upper Dublin, scored 10 points and Emma Dorsheimer, a Gettysburg freshman out of Jenkintown High, scored nine points.
Red, as mentioned, got another powerful 30 from Chelsea Wood, the leading scorer of the summer, while Hawks senior Ciara Andrews out of Cheltenham scored 17 points.
Sapphire Blue 49, Black 33: Madison Tamburini, an East Stroudsburg junior out of Archbishop Wood, scored 12 points, all from four 3-pointers, while Emily O’Donnell, an Albright senior out of William Tennent, also scored 12 for Sapphire Blue, and Rachel Falkowski, an ESU junior from Central Bucks South scored 10 points.
Black got eight points from Alynna Williams, targeted for 2021 graduated by Phila. U. out of Plymouth Whitemarsh, but the winners held the other Rams down to getting no more than two to four points among those who scored.
Forest Green 85, Kelly Green 84, overtime: Katie O’Hare, a Holy Family freshman out of Bayard Rustin had four 3-pointers to help her get to her 23 points for the winners while Michala Clay, a Saint Joseph’s freshman, scored 19 points, Casey Thomas, another Tigers freshman from Holy Family, scored 15, and Erin Fenningham, a Tigers senior out of St. Basil Academy, scored 13, though it was Somer’s buzzer-beater providing the win.
As mentioned, Mary Ellen McCollum, who is a 2014 Tigers grad out of St. Basil Academy, scored 24, while Jenna Swope, a recent Gettysburg grad out of Archbishop Wood, scored 22 aided by six 3-pointers and a shot that forced overtime, while Christine Verrelle, a recent Dowling grad out of Archbishop Wood, scored 15 points.
Maroon 51, Ash Grey 47, overtime: Maroon kept pace with Neon Green for third by edging Ash Grey in a game marred by extra-circulars. West Chester senior Brittany Sicinsnki out of Dowingtown High, had 14 points, while Golden Rams senior Kendall Benovy out of Hershey High scored 12 points and Mariah Powell, a Rams senior out of Bayard Rustin, and Rylee Power, an incoming freshman out of Marple Newtown, each scored eight points.
Ash Grey got 12 points off four 3-pointers from Jessica Gerber, a Kenyon freshman out of Council Rock North, while Aunjel Van Brakle, a Millersville senior, scored nine but the squad was held scoreless in the extra period.
The Guru did not see the particular game in which a player was ejected.
Officials who worked the game later went over a recounting of what occurred and then the commissioner said there would be calls to those involved, and then suspensions likely would follow, which occurred Wednesday and specified in the opening section above in a Guru update to this report.
Supposedly the confrontations date back to the wintertime rivalry between the two schools in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division.
The rest of the up-to-date details with the standings as they now exist, the season results, the remaining schedule, including playoff dates, the players scoring 20 or more points on a given night, and the running pseudo grid results for a quick glance are listed below.
Breaking Ties
There are three sets of ties right now and seeds are determined as if the regular season would end at the moment, obviously subject to change with each night of competition down the stretch.
Two of the ties have been mentioned and both are two-ways with head-to-head wins giving Neon Green the third seed over Maroon, while Purple gets the fifth over Sapphire Blue.
In the three-way for seventh, Ash Grey, Black and Forest Green are 1-1 in the completed head-to-head competition among them. The next break procedure was to look for the best win to place a team seventh and then resolve the tie with the remaining teams.
Well, Ash Grey and Forest Green each have a win over Sapphire Blue but Black hasn’t beaten anyone above where the three are tied. So Black drops to ninth, though still alive in the playoff hunt. Ash Grey and Forest Green each have the same best win but before that, the duo met head-to-head so Ash Grey off the win gets the seventh slot, Forest Green gets the eighth in front of black.
But that’s just for now. The only sure thing is Royal Blue is definitely eliminated, Orange likely will be next time out but may not, and Red and the others can hang in with wins.

Ash and Forest Green each beat Sapphire Blue but with a head-to-head in place among survivors, Ash beat Forest Green for seventh seed and Forest Green settles at eighth for the moment and definitely subject to change.

#-Purple beat Sapphire Blue head to head.
$--Black, Ash, Forest Green, all 1-1 in 3-way. Black drops to ninth seed with no quality win better than other two. Ash and Forest Green each beat Sapphire Blue but with a head-to-head in place among survivors, Ash beat Forest Green for seventh seed and Forest Green settles at eighth for the moment and definitely subject to change.
