Philly Summer League: Sapphire Stuns Neon Green while Orange Just Misses Historic Rally

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

A stunning upset in double overtime, a tough forfeit, and a near-record comeback highlighted Thursday’s night’s play in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Hatboro, Pa., as week number four or one month of action came to an end in the 13-team organization.

Just five more nights remain on the Tuesday and Thursday regular season schedule until the playoffs begin July 30 with quarterfinal action, continue to the semifinals, August 4, and then the championship, Aug. 6.

The Guru, who didn't get back fast enough from his WNBA morning gig in Washington for the Mystics-Liberty game, has posted all the remaining games in this report as well as the playoff schedule, which will be refined once the eight teams are known. All the seeds in the standings with tie-breaks are in their right order.

If head-to-head action hasn’t occurred between deadlock teams then for the moment, the team with the better win is awarded the higher slot. This week there are four separate two-team deadlock situations, though if the season ended right now, eight would clearly qualify with just seed order determined in tie-breakers.

Unlike last summer, a mega deadlock of three or more teams has yet to occur past the halfway point.

Though eight would qualify right now, Red and Forest Green, tied for ninth, are just a half-game out of playoff potential, 11th-place Kelly Green is a game out, and Orange is two out.

Now for the highlight action, Pink and Gold are still unbeaten at 7-0 after Pink, also predominately known as Division III Scranton, in a low-scoring affair, barely held off Purple, 34-31.

While knocked back to alone in fifth Purple, also known as Division II USciences, is 2.5 games behind the leaders but just a half-game behind the deadlock combo of Neon Green and Maroon, also predominately known as Division II West Chester.

“The good news is we held Pink to 34,” quipped longtime USciences official Bob Heller, "but the bad news is we just scored 31.”

Gold picked up its second win via forfeit, this time at the expense of Red, which might have been more of a challenge if the game would have been played as expected.

With Red sidelined, the high-scoring Saint Joseph’s sophomore Chelsea Woods was blunted by the situation from continuing to dominate individual play to date.

In a humanitarian gesture, Saint Joseph’s senior Sarah Fairbanks of Pink offered to play for Red to enable enough participants for the game to go on, but longtime commissioner David Kessler had to nix the offer because under NCAA summer league certification action a player can only play for one team and, secondly, since Woods and Hawks senior Ciara Andrews out of Cheltenham High are already on the team, Division I programs can not have a third member on the same squad.

In the shocker of the night, Sapphire Blue, predominately known as Division II East Stroudsburg, in a thriller upset Neon Green 70-67 in double overtime as the winners (3-4), who moved into a tie for seventh, overcame a 29-point performance by Villanova junior Megan Quinn for Neon Green out of Episcopal Academy.

It was just the second setback for Neon Green (5-2), and first since the opening night loss to Pink, but the squad holds the third spot in a tie with Maroon because of an earlier head-to-head win.

Quinn was one of only two players on the night to hit the individual scoring bar of 20 or more points, the other being Saint Joseph’s junior Amanda Fioravanti, who scored 24 in Kelly Green’s 67-62 win over Orange, a game that featured a near-comeback from a 30-point 49-19 deficit.

Kelly Green (2-5) had only one reserve available while Orange (1-6) had a full complement and is one of the few squads to have a sidelines coach in longtime league participant Steve Flynn.

“If we had won, this would have been the greatest comeback in the history of the league,” said Flynn, whose squad came within four of Kelly Green before being repulsed.

The other two coaches, both also longtime participants, are Neon Green’s Ted Hagedorn and Gold’s Keith Wood. All the other teams have a player-coach.

Speaking of coaches, former league player Laura Kurz is returning to her alma mater as an assistant to Harry Perretta at Villanova after holding a similar position at Lehigh.

On Thursday the Wildcats also announced they are picking up Jannah Tucker, a transfer from Tennessee, yes, that’s right, who sits out this year due to NCAA eligibility rules.

Should the native of Baltimore player in this league next summer, she would be one of the higher profile players on the all-time list that includes such past notables as Dawn Staley, among many others.

Looking Ahead

On Tuesday night, Maroon, coming off its bye, will meet Purple at 7 p.m. on Court 3 in a game involving teams from the upper part of the standings. The two have met in the winter college season.

However, as bunched as the standings are down below, in terms of the hunt to solidify playoffs spots or get closer to them, Sapphire Blue and Red meet at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2. Forest Green will have the night off while Ash teakes its turn Thursday serving the bye.

On Thursday, Gold and Purple meet at 7 p.m. on Court 2 involving teams at the higher end.

As stated earlier, in what could be the battle of unbeatens, Gold and Pink meet on July 21, a Tuesday, with the winner gaining a tie-break, if necessary, for the No. 1 slot, since only two nights will remaining afterwards.

Gold will have a tough one right after with Neon Green and then conclude with Sapphire Blue while Pink meets Maroon and then finishes with Kelly Green.

Next week, Gold meets Black, also known as Division II Philadelphia U., on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Court one before playing Purple at 7 p.m. on Court 2 Thursday.

Pink meets Ash on Court 1 at 8:15 on Tuesday right after the Gold-Black game on the same court, and then meets Orange on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2.

Breaking Ties

As mentioned above, there are four of them right now, and each is clearly determined either through head-to-head play or tie-break number two, superior win when the knot is only between two squads.

Everything is also footnoted clearly in all the stats sections below, especially the season-long tracker that gives you a quick glance who everyone played.

The deal between Pink and Gold right now is Pink’s season-opening win over Neon Green, but the two, as mentioned, are on a head-to-head collision course that would at least temporarily break the tie through record following the result.

As mentioned, Neon Green’s tie for third with Maroon, gives Neon Green the upper hand through an earlier head-to-head win.

Sapphire Blue’s stunner on Thursday night beating Neon Green gave it the nod over Black for the seventh seed in the current standings.

Finally, Red in a tie for ninth with Forest Green gets the higher slot off the win over Purple.

Recaps

Gold 2, Red 0, forfeit: All issues surrounding the immediate implications of the scheduled game with Gold 7-0) and Red (3-5) have been discussed above.

After Quinn’s big performance of 29, Carly Monzo, a Loyola sophomore out of Mt. Saint Joseph’s, and Maureen Leahy, a Bryant senior out of Cardinal O’Hara, each scored 10 for Neon Green (5-2), while Eliza Polli, a Division III Swarthmore 2013 graduate, scored nine, all from three 3-pointers.

Purple (5-3) got six points each from USciences sophomore Laura Trisch out of Archbishop Wood, and Alex Thomas, an incoming freshman.

Kelly Green 67, Orange 62: In the game that almost got away from Kelly Green (2-5), after Fioravanti’s 24 points, Kaitlyn Kelly, a DeSales sophomore out of Pennsbury High, scored 13 points, Mary Ellen McCollum, a 2014 Division II Holy Family grad out of St.Basil Academy, scored 11, and recent Dowling grad Christine Verelle out of Wood, scored 10.

Lindsey Kelly, a Nazareth College senior out of Central Bucks West led Orange (1-6) with 12 points, Lauren Rothfeld, a Salisbury Junior out of Upper Dublin, scored 11, while Mackenzie Caroll, a Colgate freshkman out of Central Bucks West, and Emma Dorshimer, a Gettysburg freshman out of Jenkintown, each scored 10 points.

Black 54, Ash 43 Black (3-4) stayed in the playoff race and blunted the small win streak by Ash (4-4), which came after two forfeits, as Jaqueline McCarron, a Phila. U. senior out of Lansdale Catholic, and Erin Rafter, a Rams incoming freshman out of Washington Township, each scored 10 points, and Tori Arnao, aa recent Rams grad out of Wood, and Erin Maher, a Phila. U. sophomore out of North Penn, each scored eight.

Ash (4-4), predominately Millersviile, got 11 points from Jessica Gerber, a Kenyon freshman out of Council Rock North, and 10 from Taylor Pritchett, while Jasmine Hudson, a Sussex Central grad as is Pirtchett, scored nine, and Lexi Scrivano, a Millersville senior out of Central Bucks East, scored eight.

Forest Green 79, Royal Blue 54: The winners (3-5), dominated by Holy Family members, got 19 points from Kiernan McCloskey, a Lehigh junior out of Germantown Academy, and also from Katie O’Hare, a Tigers incoming freshman out of Rustin High, while Michala Clay, an inbound Saint Joseph’s freshman, scored 18, all just short of the magical 20-point citation.

Royal Blue (0-8), also known as Penn State-Abington, is still the only team still needing a win but got 16 points from Tyniqua Henderson, a senior out of Dobbins High, while Elizabeth Jones, a sophomore out of St. Hubert, scored 10 point, and Shayna Rodriguez, another incoming freshman, but out of Archbishop Ryan, scored nine, Jiana Clark, a junior out of Chelteham, scored eight, and Madison Kimball, a junior out of Jenkintown, scored seven points.
