Philly Summer League Notebook: Flipping to Quarters

By Mel Greenberg

This season the Philadelphia/Suburban Women's NCAA Summer Basketball League has taken a jump start and instituted some of the recent rules changes passed last month such as playing in four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves.

Assistant director Stephen Michielli, who is also an official and refs the games, was asked his impressions to date and this is his response.

Incidentally Stephen did superb work last sunmer keeping things running during longtime commissioner David Kessler's partial absence for hip replacement surgery and the ensuing rehab.

Last year was his 50th officiating.

"Mel, personally I love the quarters. I have asked and talked to a lot of the other officials and almost all of them like the qts.

I have talked to a lot of the players and parents and they like it but they thought it was great we implemented it, because it will not have to be a big adjustment for them come the season.

As far as the 5th team foul of each qt. the only problem we have run into (mostly late in the game -4th qt.) has been when its the 5th team foul we were thinking the player had fouled out.

But I have not seen any issues the last week or so.

We have not implemented the 10 second new rule about if you need to call a timeout or the defense causes the ball to go out of bounds you only get what is left from the 10 seconds.

I think we really should have put that in but I got some push back not to.

We could do it next year. Also, having the ball moved from the backcourt to the front court under 1 minute left in the game."

High School Alums

From the nightly commissioner's newsletter that will be distributed Tuesday during the three doubleheaders beginning 7 p.m. at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Hatboro, Pa., here is a breakdown of the local high school representation by the collegians.

There are players from area schools whose hometowns are not from the region so the Guru doesnt believe those locales are listed.

There are 10 graduates from Archbishop Wood, 8 from Upper Dublin, 5 from Spring-Ford, 5 from Cardinal O’Hara, 4 from Villa Joseph Marie, 4 from St. Basil’s, 3 from Bayard Rustin, 3 from Mt.
