The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Black (D2-Jefferson), Purple (D2-West Chester) and Cyber-Pink (D2-USP Alums) With an Upset of Sky (D2-Holy Family) Remain Perfect

HATBORO, Pa. – It’s quickly down to three unbeaten teams at 2-0 of the eight in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League following night two of action Thursday and heading into the Fourth of July week pause at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Cyber Pink, an alumni group of the former University of the Sciences, had the minimum of only five players on hand but played the closest game of the four and pulled what some might call an upset with a 57-52 win over Sky (D2-Holy Family), which fell to 1-1.

Purple (D2-West Chester) had one of the more dominant nights reaching triple digits in a 100-59 win over Royal (0-2), the D-2 Goldey-Beacom led roster, which is one of three teams that will still be looking for their first win when action resumes on Tuesday, July 8, at 6:30 p.m.

Black (D-2 Jefferson) easily stayed perfect with a 67-33 win over Lemon Gold (D-2), which is still winless, while Kelly (D-2 East Stroudsburg got to 1-1, joining Sky behind the three leaders, by turning in an 81-66 victory over winless Maroon (D-3 Arcadia).

Three players reached the 20 or more-points performance index, two out of the same game, as one would guess, coming out of the Purple blowout with Sabrina Mann scoring 22 points and Brianna Seltzer scoring 20.

But the night’s best went to Lizzie Halligan of losing Maroon, matching the opening night high with 25 points that was registered by Dani Brush of Sky.

There’s an irony when action resumes on July 8 when the schedule pre-playoffs will revert to the normal Tuesday and Thursday the rest of the way.

To get all the teams eight games, that was the date picked to repeat the opening night alignment that did not happen due to the unplayable floor conditions that cancelled week one.

The actual make up games are July 22, but these are the same games.

The 6:30 p.m. contests will see Kelly (1-1) meet Royal (0-2) on Court 1, while highlight of the night will be on Court 2 in a class of unbeatens between Cyber Pink and Black.

Just like one of them will get their first loss, another matchup in the 7:45 p.m. contests will see someone get their first win when Lemon Gold (0-2) meets Maroon (0-2) on Court 1.

Court 2 will see Sky (1-1) meet Purple (2-0).

Cyber Pink 57 Sky 52

The closest game of the night again occurred on court #2 in the early game as Cyber Pink (Alumni team) remained unbeaten with a 57-52 over Sky (D2-Holy Family), handing Sky their first loss.

Pink suited only five players for the contest and placed four of them in double figures led by Gabby Bowes’ (Millersville ’29) 17 points. Taylor Hamm (USciences ’22) added 16 points while Kate Connelly (Drexel ’23) and Holly Gohl (Millersville ’28) added 12 points apiece.

Ten lead changes highlighted the first quarter as both teams exchanged baskets and a one-point lead for much of the period.

Gohl’s three-point basket put Pink ahead 16-14 and started a 9-0 run giving Pink a 22-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Bowes sank back-to-back three-point baskets after Gohl’s three-ball to complete the run.

Bowes sank her third three-ball early in the second quarter to push her team’s lead to 27-16.

Pink still led 33-23 when Sky made a 10-2 run to close out the quarter and cut Pink’s lead to two 35-33 at halftime.

Pink scored the first six points of the third quarter to put some distance between them and Sky, 41-33.

Ella Brown’s three-point basket pulled sky within five 44-39. Hamm closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws to give her team a 50-44 advantage heading into the final period.

A 5-2 run by Pink to open the fourth quarter increased their lead to nine, 55-46 and still held by nine 57-48 heading into the final two minutes.

 Monee Moore and Amy Ngo each sank a pair of free throws in the final 1:14 to make the final score 57-52.

Kelly 81   Maroon 66

 In the other early game, Kelly (D2- East Stroudsburg+) used a 10-0 run to close out the first quarter to take control of their game against Maroon (D3-Arcadia), pulling away as the game progressed en route to an 81-66 win.

Maroon’s Lizzie Halligan led all scorers with 25 points while Taylor Koenig and Delaney Bell added 18 and 15, respectively.

Kelly also placed three players in double figures led by Emily Chmiel’s (East Stroudsburg ’25) 18 points. Bridie McCann (Nova Southeastern ’27) added 15 points while Daniella MacDonald (Wheaton ’28) chipped in 14.

Four lead changes and four ties highlighted the first quarter with the final tie at 13-13 following a Koenig free throw.

Green then scored the final ten points of the quarter to take a 23-13 lead heading into the second period.

Kelly gradually increased the lead in the second quarter and led by 19 at 41-22 following a pair of free throws from McCann.

Marron closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run to trail 43-29 at halftime.

Bell’s three-point field goal early in the third quarter cut the Kelly lead to single digits 45-36.

 Kelly followed with a 7-1 spurt to lead 52-37 and continued to lead by double digits 56-44 heading into the final quarter when Kelly exploded with a 13-1 run to open the period to take their biggest lead 69-45.

Chmiel’s basket with about four minutes left made the score 73-53. Marron closed out the game with a 13-8 run to pull within 15 when the final buzzer sounded, 81-66.

Black 67 Lemon Gold 33

 Team Black (D2-Jefferson) remained unbeaten, cruising to a 67-33 win over Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown+) in the late game on Court Two.

Jordyn Thomas led Black with 19 points while Carlie Lapinski and Caleigh Sperling added 11 points apiece.

Liliana Metrick (Widener’29) led Lemon with 12 points (three-three-point baskets). Kathryn Randa (Kutztown ’28) and Brooke McFadden (TCNJ’28) added six points apiece.

Black opened with a 15-2 run and never looked back, jumping out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter.

Metrick’s three three-balls in the second quarter kept Lemon within striking distance as they outscored Black 11-9 in the quarter to trail 28-17.

Black’s defense limited Lemon to just ten third quarter points, outscoring their opponent 22-10 to lead 50-27 after three quarters and continued their defensive dominance with a 17-6 run in the fourth quarter to complete the 34-point win.

Purple 100 Royal Blue 59

Purple (D2-West Chester+) improved to 2-0 on the season with a wire-to-wire 100-59 win over Royal Blue (d2-Goldey Beacom+) in the other late game Thursday night.

Purple placed five players in double figures led by Sabria Mann’s (Chestnut Hill ’29) 22 points. Brianna Seltzer also reached the 20-point plateau scoring exactly 20 points.

Reynah Ratliff (Wilmington ’29) added 18 points while Sa’ni Savage (Chowan ’27) and Alaina Hopta added 17 and 12 points respectively.

Talia Battavio (Goldey Beacom ’29) led Royal with 19 points. Reagan Chrencik(Gettysburg ’27) added 17 points while Katherine Lange (Goldey-Beacom ’29) chipped in ten.

Purple scored the first 11 points before Chrencik’s free throw put Royal on the board. Lange scored the team’s first basket on their next possession to make the score 13-3.

Purple still led by ten 19-9 when they closed out the quarter with an 8-1 run to lead 27-10.

Six different players scored in the second quarter as Purple expanded their lead to 50-27 at halftime.

The lead grew to 40 points by the end of the third quarter 79-39 and Purple increased the margin to as high as 43 points, 92-49 in the fourth quarter before settling in for the 41-point win.
