The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Black-Jefferson, Sky-Holy Family and Cyber Pink-USP Alumni Dominate Delayed Opening Night

HATBORO, Pa. — Players gonna play and after a two-night delay last week due to slippery floor conditions joy prevailed here Wednesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades on Turnpike Drive as the 2025 season of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League finally got under way.

“That’s the heart of what really matters,” said the league’s longtime commissioner David Kessler in terms of players looking for competitive fun and eager to hone their skills for the winter ahead.

Considering the high heat weather, the big fans indoors were able to make conditions bearable for both spectators and the eight teams.

Three of the four games were 20+ point blowouts while the one that wasn’t that large was still in control by the winner.

In terms of the scores, Black (D2-Jefferson) easily dominated Maroon (D3-Arcadia) winning 88-55; Sky (D2-Holy Family) cruised over Royal 97-48; Cyber Pink (USP Alumni) handled Kelly 64-44; and Purple (D2-West Chester) came up with a 57-49 triumph over Lemon Gold.

Two players filled the 20+ points performance cumulative listings — Dani Brusha on the Winning Sky/Holy Family team had the night’s best performance with 25 points, while Emily Spratt on the winning Black/Jefferson squad scored 21 points.

It’s going to be a quick turnaround; this is the second of the original two weeks on the summer schedule of Tuesday and Thursday nights that are being in a Wednesday-Thursday combo.

Then comes a long break with the traditional pause during the Fourth of July week with games to resume Tuesday, July 8th.

Ironically, that night was set as a repeat of opening night competition to get eight regular season games ahead of the playoffs.

Those games will now come first and then the opening night makeup will be played Tuesday, July 22, which includes two games that were suspended when the floor became dangerous.

The Thursday games that were postponed will be played Thursday, July 24, pushing the playoffs back one week with quarterfinal action on July 29, semifinal games on July 31 and the championship on August 5th.

Until enough games are played to set the true seed order, the seed tracker will be listed alphabetically within the winning percentage.

On Thursday night in the 6:30 p.m. games, someone will get their first win when Kelly meets Maroon on Court 1, while someone on Court 2 will get their first loss when Sky and Cyber Pink meet.

The 7:45 p.m. nightcaps match Royal (0-1) and Purple (1-0) on Court 1, while Black (0-1) meets Lemon Gold (0-1) on Court 2.

Purple 57   Lemon Gold 49

In what was the closest game of the night, Purple (D2-West Chester) rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat shorthanded Lemon Gold 57-49 in the Court 2 early game.

Sa’ni Savage (Chowan ’27) led Purple with 14 points while Jordan Tate added 13 points.

 Fiona Reckner (Franklin and Marshall (’29) led Lemon gold with 15 points. Nadia Yemola (Kutztown ’29) and Brooke McFadden (College of New Jersey ’28) added 11 and ten points, respectively. (Lemon gold only had five players suited for the game)

Leading by five after the first quarter, Lemon Gold opened the second quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 33-18 lead.  Yemola sank two three-point baskets during the run.  Reckner’s three-ball in the latter part of the period gave Lemon gold their biggest lead at 36-20 before Purple scored the final four points of the half to trail by 12, 36-24.

The second half belonged to Purple. Trailing by nine, the team scored eight straight points to pull within one 40-39. Both teams exchanged basket the rest of the period with Lemon gold clinging to a 44-43 lead.

Lena Stein’s basket tied the game at 46-46 early in the fourth quarter before Tate’s basket gave Purple their first lead since the opening basket of the game, 48-46.

A traditional three-point play from Alli Kamulda (Chestnut Hill ’29) capped off a 10-2 run and gave Purple a 53-46 lead as Purple went on to finish the quarter outscoring Lemon Gold 14-5 to earn the nine-point win.

Sky Blue 97 Royal Blue 49

In the other early game on Court 1 Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) led wire-to-wire opening up a double-digit lead in the first quarter and expanded it throughout the game as they cruised to a 97-49 win over Royal Blue (D2-Goldey-Beacom)

Sky placed five players in double figures, led by Dani Brusha’s 25 points. Kara Meredith added 19 while Amy Ngo chipped in 15. Camryn Gregory added 11 points and Ella Brown chipped in ten points to round out their double figure scorers.

Janie Cross led Royal with 15 points while Angelina Zagone and Reagan Chrencik (Gettysburg ’27) added 11 points apiece.

Royal stayed close through the first part of the opening quarter trailing by just four 13-9. Sky followed with 14 straight points to take command 27-9 and held a 30-13 after one period of play.

Sky expanded their lead to 53-26 by halftime and 79-33 after three quarters and outscored royal 18-16 in the final quarter to close out the 97-49 win.

Black 88 Maroon 55

Team black (D2-Jefferson University) placed four players in double figures as they cruised to an 88-55 win over Maroon (D3-Arcadia University) in the late game on Court 1.

Emily Spratt led the Black squad with 21 points with Caleigh Spering adding 19 points. Kaci Mikulski and Carlie Lapinski chipped in 12 points apiece.

Taylor Koenig had 12 points to lead Maroon. Anastasia bowman and Kara Quigley (Sctranton’25) added ten points apiece.

Maroon’s Delaney Bell staked her team to an early 4-0 lead before Black scored nine straight points to lead 9-4.   Maroon broke thew run to pull within three 9-6 but black closed out the quarter on a 21-8 run to lead 30-14 after one period.

Sperling and Spratt combined for nine second quarter points as black expanded their lead to 49-26 at halftime.

 Sperling scored an added eight points as Black continued to expand their lead in the third quarter, opening up a 28-point advantage 72-44 heading into the final quarter.

Black outscored Maroon 16-11 in the final period to close out the 88-55 win.

Cyber Pink 64 Kelly 44

Cyber Pink (Alumni team) picked up where they left off last season when they captured the league championship, easily winning their opening game 64-44 over Kelly.

Leah Johnson (West Chester ’24) led all players with 14 points. Delaney McCaffrey (Ursinus ’28) added 11 points while Taylor Hamm (USciences’ 22) chipped in ten.

Ava Jordan (Case Western ’28) and Daniella MacDonald (Wheaton ’28) led Kelly with 10 points apiece.

Kelly jumped out to an early 9-0 lead  but Pink was undeterred, scoring ten straight points to take a 10-9 lead.  Pink continued their run, expanding it to 15-1 to lead by five 15-10.  Kelly closed out the quarter on a 7-2 spurt to pull within two 17-15 after one quarter.

Four different players scored four points apiece in the second quarter as Pink started to pull away, taking a 33-23 lead at halftime.  Johnson scored eight of Pink’s 11 third quarter points as the defending champs expanded their lead to 44-31 heading into the final quarter.

Pink’s defense limited Kelly to 13 fourth quarter points and outscored their opponent 20-13 to complete the 20-point win. McCaffrey had seven points and Rylee Derr (Kutztown’21) chipped in six to pace the Oink offense in the quarter.
