The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: In Reset Action Off Postponement League Set to Re-Launch 2025 Summer SeasonWednesday Night

HATBORO, Pa. - For those of us growing up in the early days of the NASA race to the moon as the various programs came along there were many times on launch days as the countdowns were under way  the anticipation of the approaching moment when the rocket was to blast away faded to disappointment as the flight was postponed due to either weather related problems or mechanical glitches suddenly detected to put it all off to a few days down the road.

And at times multiple delays ran across several weeks until the event succeeded.

In that spirit following the original opening night of the eight-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer League last week that saw two games under way suspended with the night caps postponed and then 24 hours later Thursday’s four-game slate called due to slippery floor conditions from condensation at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, 2950 Turnpike Drive, the operation will be back at it Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. on Courts 1 and 2 followed by the second games at 7:45 p.m.

The action will pick up with the original games listed for this week on Wednesday and Thursday and continuing through the original end on July 17th.

At 6:30 p.m. Sky (D2-Holy Family) on Court 1 will meet  Royal (D2-Goldey-Beacom+)  the + indicating players beyond the school name roster domination; while on Court 2 Purple (D2-West Chester) will meet Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown). There are times Lemon Gold may be called Yellow in Bob’s game reports. 

The Commissioner was eccentric in designating color names on the jerseys.

Wednesday’s nightcaps have at 7:45 p.m. Black (D2-Jefferson) on Court 1 playing Maroon (D3-Arcadia) while on Court 2 Cyber Pink (USP Alums+) meeting Kelly (East Stroudsburg+).

On Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Kelly Meets Maroon on Court 1 while Sky plays Cyber Pink on Court 2. At 7:45 p.m. Royal plays Purple on Court 1 while Black plays Lemon Gold on Court 2.

Then on July 22, the night the playoffs were set to open, the two suspended games from last Wednesday will be completed and the two postponed games played.

Two nights later, Thursday, July 24, last Thursday’s postponed slate of four will occur.

Thus a one week delay for the playoffs will see quarterfinal action on Tuesday July 29 on Courts 1 and 2, a semifinals doubleheader on Court 1 on Thursday, July 31 and the championship on Court 1 on Tuesday August 5.

The teams in the summer are self coached but their winter coaches stop by to observe and it should be noted that longtime successful coach Jackie Hartzell at D2 USP before the merger with D1-Saint Joseph’s that ended the athletic program and then at Arcadia filled the vacancy at D1-Rider and at Arcadia she was succeeded by former Villanova star Diane Decker.

The revised schedule follows below for the entire season.

Admission is free, a snack bar exists, and big mechanical fans keep the place somewhat comfortable though last report indicated the current heat wave is suppose to lessen in the next 24 hours as this is written Tuesday evening.
