The Guru Report: Some WNBA Musings Heading Into The Final Day of the Regular Season

It seems like yesterday three short months ago the WNBA was full speed ahead on opening weekend, great matchups, with games on ABC, games on ESPN, games on the other broadcast partners, wonderful storylines that have since multiplied — unknown then, Sue Bird’s retirement happening joining Sylvia Fowles’ career departure, oddly at a time when the Minnesota Lynx come to life, her sights are set on the mortuary business.

All-Star weekend was among the best ever. 

Technically, a second all-star squad is about to come into play being the USA contingent that will go for the FIBA World Championship next month where other league stars will be on other national teams.

No question, the hire and elevating to commissioner status of Cathy Engelbert was the right move at the right time.

The now long-running media group in the home office, with adds and moved ons along the way, work their tails off.

And now in the final days filling the last playoff spots is akin to the stretch drive of the National Football League. 

You all know what that’s like - day-by-day coverage, what each team has to do, where’s the help coming from if wins alone won’t do it.

Besides in-market coverage, nationwide from bettors to pure fans who love the horse race, eyes become glued and if Cinderellas, even the ones with records suggesting nags, emerge, their first playoff games are anticipated to see if the glass slippers are shatterproof.

Hey, this time a month later last year how many thought the two lowest seeds in playoff history would  be in the finals with Chicago becoming the toast of the Windy City.

So, one would think it’s simple to whip together and set the overview ahead of Sunday’s games with Phoenix, in the 5 p.m. game with Chicago, watching the 1 p.m. tip to view Minnesota facing Connecticut and 2 p.m. New York hosting also in play Atlanta, the three last contenders then possibly looking at Phoenix’s performance.

But sadly, first, before moving into the stakes for each remaining playoff qualifying hopeful your Guru must dispense with some tough love.

At the time when the commissioner is pursuing making the league a household name — aside: might already be that’s such considering the way Uber drivers immediately drop questions about Brittney Griner on me — at arguably one of the most exciting weeks of the regular season, how can the WNBA be out to lunch???

On the Apps, suddenly the standings link which at least is quickly updated postgame has vanished.

On the regular site as of three hours ago — 7 p.m. writing this right now in the East — the playoff story is two weeks old.

Tiebreaker procedures are listed at the bottom of the standings but there’s no flesh and blood.

It’s like telling what has to happen if a bunch of cars hit an intersection at the same moment but no guide what each most do to continue.

Tiebreak No. 2 , which I don’t think will go into play, better winning percentages against teams .500 or better, is interesting because on Sunday at 7 p.m. a Dallas win over Los Angeles makes the already sixth seed Wings part of the .500 pool and a loss does not.

Going into Friday, the four teams were 14-20 and thanks to Howard Megdal’s magnificent roundup person at The Next, Em Adler, the weekend scenarios had the clues except on Saturday someone else filled in and the update precision wasn’t there.

Thankfully, a paragraph from ESPN’s M.A. Voepel covering the last home game of Fowles in Minnesota had the Lynx outlook heading to third seed Connecticut Sunday handled following the 96-69 wipeout by the fourth seed Seattle Storm.

New York Liberty beat writer Geoff Magliocchetti had the 80-70 win in Atlanta in check while Friday host team Dream publicist Kelsey Bibik had the outlook from that side heading into Brooklyn for the rematch.

Finally, long time Phoenix Mercury beat writer Jeff Metcalf down in the Southwest had the rest of it after the comeback 86-74 win over Dallas.

Seattle slamming Minnesota gained the fourth seed while fifth seed Washington which beat long-eliminated Indiana 82-70 on the road also gained a lottery pick in the next draft courtesy of previous dealings when the Los Angeles Sparks were eliminated.

For the teams locked into their playoff slots or ousted, Sunday is still one more chance for players to show themselves since midnight is the deadline for the national voting panel to submit their postseason awards ballot to the league office.

So now that the Guru helper gold medals have been awarded here’s what you’re looking at Sunday with New York and Phoenix at sunrise inside the rope at the moment.

The Four Scenarios for the Last Contending Playoff Teams

 1 p.m. ABC Minnesota at Connecticut needs to beat the Sun and then for help will look to Chicago beating Phoenix or Atlanta beating New York.

2 p.m. ESPN3 Atlanta at New York needs to revenge beat the Liberty and for Phoenix to lose to Chicago while the host Liberty wraps it up with a win but a loss means New York would need Minnesota to lose to Connecticut and Phoenix would have to beat Chicago.

5 p.m. ABC Phoenix at Chicago needs to beat the host Sky or Minnesota to lose to Connecticut. Ironically this is the rematch of last year’s finals won by Chicago in four games and could again repeat in next week’s opening round if the Mercury are the seventh seed. 

Back to just ahead, if Phoenix  and New York finish tied for seventh the Mercury gain the head to head advantage opening 8 p.m. (a time change from what the website was posting earlier ) Wednesday on ESPN2 at Chicago for Game 1. However, Phoenix will lose out in tiebreaks to Atlanta and Minnesota.

On Wednesday the 8th seed, to be determined, will open at top seed Las Vegas at 10 p.m., also on ESPN2. The host Aces overcame Chicago, the defending champions, in the last week to finish first under new coach and former WNBA player great Becky Hammon.

The Thursday opening games have Dallas at Connecticut at 8 p.m. while Washington will be at Seattle at 10 p.m., the Sun opener on ESPNU followed by Seattle on ESPN2.

Per the total revamp of the opening round with the elimination of one-and-done  and byes, the round for the playoff field is a best of three.

The hosting teams listed above remain for the Game 2 matchups.

On Saturday, Chicago hosts at noon and Las Vegas at 9 p.m. both on ESPN2.

The Sunday Game 2 matchups have Connecticut at noon on ABC while Seattle hosts at 4 p.m. on ESPN2, which will carry all if necessary Game 3s  at times to be determined on the following Wednesday and Thursday nights, a maximum two each night. The updates for that will appear here when released.

If necessary, the field re-seeds for the semifinals.

Hopefully, a public service got offered here. 

Soon it’s off to Connecticut on the Redeye Amtrak in a few hours.

Guru Report: Drive She Said

Yes, it’s a take on the title of 1971 movie directed by Jack Nicholson about a college basketball player, called Drive, He Said.

Coach Sandy Brondello lamented the other day about her team’s lack of driving the basketball.  

The New York Liberty is last in the WNBA in foul shot attempts.  

Arguably, the lack of driving is making it easier for opposing teams to defend the outside shot. It is also  resulting in less foul trouble for opposing players and less chances for easy points at the foul line.

Sami Whitcomb, Rebecca Allen, and Marine Johannes all have the athleticism and the ball handling ability to drive the ball.  So why aren’t they doing more of it?

The Guru Report: Fourth Quarter Surge Carries USciences Grads Over Jefferson U To a Successful 2022 Defense of Philly Summer League Crown

HATBORO, Pa. - USciences may be no more following the D-2 school merger at the end of June with D-1 Saint Joseph’s University.

For three quarters, 5-seed Black (Jefferson University) kept within striking distance Tuesday night of defending champion Heather Maroon (USciences Grads) until the 2-seed Devils went into lockdown mode in the fourth quarter, holding Black scoreless for the first 6:48 of the period while opening a double-digit lead then hanging on for a 62-54 win for the second straight league championship in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League

Kate Connelly, a recent Drexel grad and one of the outsiders on the squad, and Cassie Sebold played crucial roles in the fourth quarter effort from Heather Maroon with Connelly making her first three shots of the quarter as the Grads opened a 51-40 lead.

Then as D-2 Jefferson, which fell to USciences in the championship of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) last winter, began to threaten with time running out, Sebold made two clutch free throws with 22 seconds left and recorded a steal on Black’s next possession with just 11 ticks on the clock allowing her team to run the closing seconds down to clinch the win.

Jess Huber and Irisa Ye led Maroon with 12 and 11 points respectively while Sebold, Connolly and Allie Crone chipped in eight points apiece.

Haley Meinel and Emily Spratt paced Black with 12 and 11 points respectively. Morgan Robinson added nine points while Emma Kuczynski chipped in eight. 

The two teams put on a back-and-forth battle just like they have many times during the winter seasons as Jefferson and USciences with neither team leading by more than three for the first 17 minutes with ten lead changes and six ties over that same period.

Maroon’s Lexie Edwards sank two free throws with three minutes remaining, to tie the game and start an 11-2 run by the defending champs who took an 34-27 lead with under a minute left in the first half. 

Robinson’s basket with 23.5 seconds left made the score 34-29 at the break.

Crone opened the third quarter with a three-point bank shot that gave Maroon their biggest lead at the time 37-29. 

Black, which advanced to the title game reversing the outcomes twice in the quarterfinals and semifinals with revenge wins over teams that beat Jefferson on the nine-game schedule in the ten-team league, whittled away at the deficit, closing within two 42-40 with an 11-5 spurt with 1:36 left. 

The semifinals win last Thursday night dispatched top-seed Red/D-2 Chestnut Hill, who did likewise to the Rams a year ago in the semifinals with a 5-5 record.

USciences’ Ye closed out the quarter with a basket with 33 seconds left, giving Maroon a 44-40 lead heading into the final period.

Connolly scored three baskets in the first 2:33 of the fourth quarter as part of a 7-0 Maroon run, opening a double-digit lead at 51-40. 

The Devils defense held Black scoreless until the 3:12 mark when Kuczynski cut the lead to nine with Black’s first field goal and points of the quarter, 51-42. 

Three Maroon free throws pushed the lead to 12 before Black cut the margin in half with a traditional three-point play from Robinson and a three-point bomb from Meinel, making the score 54-48 with 2:15 left.

Forced to foul, Black tried to take advantage of several missed free throws by Maroon over the final two minutes and got baskets from Kuczynski and Robinson to close within four 56-52 with 1:28 left. 

But a third straight payback was not to be.

Maroon followed with two defensive stops while making four free throws in three separate trips to the line to lead 60-52 with 39.5 seconds left. 

Robinson followed with a putback layup and was fouled. However, she was unable to convert the three-point play. 

Sebold was immediately fouled off the missed Robinson free throw and sank both shots before following up with a steal to seal the 62-54 victory, as both USciences Grads and the league officials could celebrate another successful summer.

The Guru Report: It’s Another Championship Clash for Heather Maroon/D2-USciences Grads and Black/D2-Jefferson As Philly Summer League Heads to the Finish Line

HATBORO, Pa. - Five months after South Division rivals D2- USciences topped Jefferson 53-44 to win the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship, the representative names meet again Tuesday night with a modified alteration for the title round of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, 7 p.m. on Court 1.

USciences may be no more as an undergraduate operation following the school merger at the end of June with D-1 Saint Joseph’s but the Devils return as the No. 2 seed to defend the crown they won here a year ago as a grad contingent organized as a second squad from the school last summer since the undergrads were still existing prior to their final collegiate season.

Jefferson, normally a summer-long front runner in what was this year a 10-team, nine-game schedule playing twice weekly  that began June 14 minus the July 4th two-night stand down, got off to an inordinate start, losing the first two games, winning the next four, then got routed by Purple/D2-West Chester, before ending with two victories.

The last one came by a 2-0 forfeit win over Pink/D2-West Chester to finish 6-3 in a four-way tie for third just one game behind the 7-2 co-winners 1-seed Red/D2-Chestnut Hill and Heather Maroon.

USciences stayed in the regular schedule hunt most of the summer with Jess Huber the likely league MVP, if so given, five times reaching the Guru’s nightly 20 or more points citation, including a season-high 27 in Thursday night’s semifinals 57-43 win over 3-seed Columbia Blue/ D2-Holy Family. 

West Chester’s Leah Johnson twice reached 20 or more points ahead of five individuals, who hit the mark once.

Both Jackie Hartzell, who coached USciences in the winter, and Jefferson’s Tom Shirley are expected to be in the stands. Jackie was in the house Thursday as was Shirley’s staff along with Holy Family’s Bernadette Laukaitis and Chestnut Hill’s Jim Connolly.

Overall, league commissioner David Kessler, now in his 28th season that dates back to sites the league competed elsewhere like Northeast High, is pleased with the summer action, involving only one forfeit which occurs when rosters get undersized in a combination due to camp weeks, injuries, jobs, or other issues.

In the quarterfinals, Jefferson avenged its wipeout by 4-seed Purple 59-51 and continued the revenge postseason tour in the semis beating Chestnut Hill 62-53, which a year ago topped the then 1-seed Rams in the semifinals. Black also did likewise in the CACC semifinals when Red also was the top seed. 

A win for all the marbles would also be payback for the regular season meeting 53-45 loss to Heather Maroon on June 21.

USciences in the quarterfinals ousted nine-seed Kelly Green, one of two draft rosters - the other being Sun - by a score of 68-59.

Draft teams are those whose rosters aren’t dominated by one of the winter squads which other than D-1 classifications are allowed by the NCAA to compete in summer leagues as units. D-1 schools are limited to just two teammates. D-1 grads with expired eligibility have no limitations.

The Devils in the semifinals got the right to return to the championship with the 57-43 win over Holy Family.

As has been the norm on the reports in the playoffs, next comes the advance of Tuesday’s clash with Bob’s account of the regular season meeting, the rosters, and the season results by the two teams before the regular running Guru stats on standings, 20-point scorers, results by league schedule and then teams, which will repeat the title contenders in those listings.

Heather Maroon 53  Black  45 (June 21)

 

Heather Maroon (USciences Alumni +) remains the only undefeated team three games into the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League with a 53-45 win over Black (Jefferson University).  

Jess Huber led the Maroon (3-0) squad with 14 points while Allie Crone chipped in 11.  Irisa Ye added eight points. 

 Black (0-2) was paced by Emily Keehfuss’ 10 points while Haley Meinel added nine.

A close first quarter saw a couple of ties before Black pulled ahead late and led 14-10.  

A Keehfuss three-ball capped a 5-2 run to open the second quarter and give Black a 19-12 lead before Maroon rang up 16 straight points to take control of the game 28-19  with Huber scoring eight of her points during the 16-0 uprising.  

Crone’s basket late in the quarter gave the Marron squad a double digit lead at 32-22 before Meinel connected to make the score 32-24 at the half.

Maroon opened the third quarter with a 13-4 run to take their biggest lead at 45-28 but did not score the rest of the quarter as Black whittled away at the lead, closing to 45-35 at the end of the period and scoring the first two baskets of the fourth quarter (an 11-0 run across the two periods) to close within six 45-39.  

Huber, Kate Connelly and Ye followed with baskets to push Maroon’s lead back to double digits, 51-39.  Black would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
