Philly WBB Summer League: Black and Red Hit the Break Unbeaten

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — Just under half the nine-game schedule completed the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League following Thursday’s results here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, and now the action heads into the week-long July fourth holiday break with Team Black, also known as D2-Jefferson U, and Team Red, also known as a combo of D1-West Chester and D3 Gettysburg, still unbeaten at 4-0.

Enough games have now been played that true tie-breaks can be determined each night, though not yet in all cases, the rest of the way.

Bob has the recaps below but the skinny is that Black stayed perfect with a 61-47 win over Lime Green, also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, a team that is a rival of Black in the winter in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Red, which won’t meet Black until late next month, stayed tied at the  top with an easy 94-48 triumph over winless Golden Sun (0-3), also known as D3-Arcadia.

Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, also a member of the CACC, took a 51-43 win over Purple, composed of D2-East Stroudsburg to stay all alone in third.

Purple dropped into a three-way deadlock at 2-2 with defending champion Maroon, also known as D2-USciences and  Royal Blue, also known as a combination of D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury.

Maroon, who meets Black after the break, struggled again but drew even at 2-2 with an 86-69 win over Kelly Green, also known as a combination of D2-Millersville and D3-Moravian.

Royal Blue has lost to both Purple and Maroon but got an 86-51win Thursday night over  Yhe Orange roster has a plentiful group of D3-Ursinus players.

The losses by Lime Green and Kelly Green put them into a two-way tie at seventh but Lime Green has a head to-head win over Kelly Green.

Orange (0-3) and Golden Sun (0-3), a team also known as  D3-Arcadia, are still looking for their first win, but could get it soon after the break for one when a game last week postponed due to a wet floor from the weather will be played.

The teams will meet in an 8:15 time slot on a night to be determined and the matchup will follow an early game for each listed for courts with 7 p.m. tip times.

Individual Performances

Just two players, both new to the list, hit the nightly top performance citation for 20 or more points and each of them scored 20 in front of several other players who missed by just two or three points.

Lime Green’s Lauren Crim, a Chestnut Hill sophomore out of Lansdale Catholic, hit the mark in her team’s loss to Black while Maroon and USciences freshman freshman Isla Brennan scored 20 in the Devils’ win over Kelly Green.

Breaking Ties

Some of this content has been spoken to above but to put it all in one place, this is the section that will house how seeds are determined each night leading to the playoffs in which all 10 teams qualify but the top six get byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round will match seeds seven and ten besides sees eight and nine in a doubleheader to advance the other two.

Two-way ties are determined by head-to-head results. Along the way if teams haven’t met yet, then best win becomes the deal maker.

Three or more teams involved in a deadlock are determined through common records against each other.

In some situations before getting near the final standings the criteria hasn’t been met and teams will just be arbitrarily placed and when that is done it will be reported in this section.

The quick way to look at how seeds are shaping is the tie-tracker grid at the bottom of this report but in front of the rosters.

So since they won’t meet till near the end, for now Black’s win over third-place Sky Blue gives the Rams the top slot going into the holiday break  with Red at No. 2, while Sky Blue is alone in third.

In the three-way tie for fourth, Royal Blue at 0-2 is dropped to sixth and since Purple and Maroon haven’t met they are just arbitrarily dropped in the fourth ad fifth seed positions.

In the two-way for seventh the Lime Green win over Kelly Green earns the sot while the winless duo of Golden Sun and Orange are placed arbitrarily to ninth and 10h.

Looking Ahead

The 2-2 record and early struggles of defending champion Maroon has taken some of the luster off of the matchup a week from Tuesday when play resumes and the two meet at 7 p.m. on Court 1.

A year ago Black went unbeaten all the way to the title game, handing Maroon its only loss but then the Devils avenged the setback to win the championship over the Rams.

Last winter out of the CACC the two gave each other their only loss for a long while Black suffered a narrow second loss before the two would meet in the conference championship.

Black prevailed in topping USP 74-73 in overtime.

Both advanced to the DII East regional at USciences and were eliminated in separate rounds without meeting each other as Jefferson first fell to Stonehill.

In other games after the break, unbeaten Red meets 2-2 Royal Blue at 8:15 on Court 2 while 3-1 Sky Blue meets 0-3 Orange at 7 p.m. on Court 2.

Purple (2-2) meets Kelly Green (1-3) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1. The other game at 7 p.m. on Court 3 has Golden Sun (0-3) meeting Lime Green (1-3).

That night also marks the arrival of three Division I players in Villanova’s Mackenzie Gardler, the highly touted redshirt freshman of last season out of Cardinal O’Hara, and Raven James on Team Kelly Green, while the other is ironically Alana Davidson from Davidson.

The players themselves committed no violations but some red tape issues caused a delayed start to the certification completion causing a delay when the trio could officially play.

Re-Caps

 Black 61, Lime Green 47

Team Black (also known as Jefferson University) survived a second half threat from team Line Green (also known as Chestnut Hill College) to remain undefeated with 61-47 win.

Leading 30-18 at the half, Black scored a quick basket to open the third quarter before Lime Green responded with 13 unanswered points, highlighted by three three-pointers from Lauren Crim to pull within one 32-31 at the 6:51 mark.

After an exchange of baskets Sabria Lytes gave Black a 36-33 lead only to have Lime Green’s Brianna Cullen tie the game at 36-36 with a three-pointer with 4:40 left in the period.

Black responded with and 11-1 uprising, sparked by senior Caitlyn Cunningham who had seven of the 11 points in the run to close out the half and give Black a 47-37 lead.

Cunningham added another basket to open the fourth quarter followed by baskets from Lytes and Bridget Arcidiacono to push the lead to 16.

Black’s lead never dropped below ten points the rest of the way as they cruised to their fourth straight win of the season.

Cunningham led all scorers with 18 points while Arcidiacono chipped in nine.

Crim led Lime Green who dropped to 1-3 with 20 points.  Cassie Sebold and Maura Conroy had seven apiece.

Maroon 86, Kelly Green 69

Defending league champion Maroon (also known as USciences) also survived a scare as Kelly Green nearly erased a 17-point halftime deficit to close within four before Maroon pulled away for an 86-67 win.

Maroon was connecting from long range for most of the first half, sinking ten three point field goals, including four by freshman Isla Brennan to take a 54-37 lead at the half.

Kelly Green began to chip away at the lead in the third quarter, with Mia Leonard’s layup cutting the lead to single digits and a three-ball from Lauren Cunningham closing the gap to six 64-58.

Kate Seeman’s basket to open the scoring in the fourth quarter cut Maroon’s lead to four 66-62.

The basket however was the only field goal Kelly Green would muster until the final minute as Maroon kicked their defense up a notch and their offense returned to its first half form, producing a 20-3 run that saw seven different players score.

Kelly Green scored two baskets in the final 35 seconds to make the final 86-69.

Brennan led five Maroon players in double figures with 20 points on the night (four threes).  Jordan Vitelli had 13 (two threes) while Kendall Keyes, Irisa Ye and Taylor Hamm scored ten apiece.  Keyes had two three-points while Brigit Coleman (8 points) also had a pair of three-balls.

Samantha Brusha   led Kelly Green with 17 points.

Meghan Ansel chipped in 13 while Cunningham added 11. Seeman rounded out Kelly’s double figure scorers with ten points.

Sky Blue 51, Purple 43

The early contest between Sky Blue (also known as Holy Family University) and Purple (East Stroudsburg alumni) was the only contest of the night to be decided by less than ten points.

The game had the makings of a blowout as Sky Blue jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter before Purple started to chip away at deficit.

Tyeca Reviere hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter and added another one late as the Purple squad closed within eight at the half, 31-23.

Purple closed within six three times in the third quarter and trailed 43-35 heading into the final period.

After both teams exchanged baskets, Purple‘s Melissa Poderis had a steal and a layup and Dana Bandurick added a basket to pull Purple within four 45-41 with 4:49 left.

Sky Blue followed with three straight buckets, a baseline jumper from Dana Dockery and two driving layups from Monee Moore to push their lead to ten, 51-41.

Sydney Blum added a basket for Purple to provide the final 51-43 score.

Four players produced all the points for Sky Blue with Dockery leading the way with 17 points.  Liz Radley added 13 points while Anjelai Hayes and Moore chipped in 11 and ten respectively.

Reviere had ten points for Purple while Blum and Emma Stanfield chipped in eight apiece.

  Red 94, Golden Sun 48

Team Red (West Chester/Gettysburg) also remained unbeaten with a 94-48 blowout of team Golden Sun.

Red had a well balanced scoring effort with five players in double figures led by Sasha Marvel’s 12 points.  Gabby Troisi, Becca Margolis and Katie Fisher added 11 points apiece while Leah Johnson chipped in ten.

Taylor Dunn led golden Sun with 12 points while Julia Makowski chipped in eight.

Red scored the first eight points of the game and opened an 18-1 lead and never looked back, leading 26-7 at the end of the first quarter and 42-21 at the half.

A 13-1 run to start the third quarter pushed the Red team’s lead above the point mark at 55-22 and they closed out the third quarter with a 13-5 run and finished the game with a solid fourth quarter to earn their fourth win of the season.

Golden Sun remains winless at 0-3.

 Royal Blue 86, Orange 53

Team Royal Blue (Salisbury University/Kutztown University) also had an easy night as they defeated Team Orange (Ursinus College), 88-53, evening their record at 2-2.

Annie Whalen led Royal with 19 points while Rachel Ryan and Kaylee Otlowski had ten points apiece.

Kristin Hamill led Orange with ten points while Courtney Hardy and gabby Downs had nine and eight respectively.

Royal scored the first 11 points of the game and opened up a 28-17 lead at the end of one quarter.

They extended the lead to as many as 20 in the second quarter before ending the period with a 47-29 lead.

A 19-5 run to open the third quarter gave Royal a comfortable 66-34 lead midway through the period and a 75-45 lead entering the final quarter.

Royal outscored Orange 11-6 in the fourth quarter to produce their 35-point win.

Seeman and Leonard had nine points apiece.

Philly WBB Summer League: Teams Black and Red Remain Unbeaten at 3-0

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller

HATBORO, Pa. — Three narrow outcomes, one of which resulted in defending champion Maroon (D2-USciences)  taking another early loss, highlighted play Tuesday night in the start of week two of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Two teams remained unbeaten with Black (D2-Jefferson), last season’s runner up, cruising to an 84-40 win over Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia) while Red (D2 West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) rallied to top Orange 83-78.

Orange is the one squad which is not dominated by either a single D2 or D3 squad or combo of the two NCAA lower divisional schools who compete in the winter.

Red and Black don’t meet until late next month near the end of the nine-game schedule and Red has already posted the other win over Maroon, which meets Black Tuesday, July 9, the first night of play resumption following the holiday break next week.

That night will also see the date in which D-1 players can join the action after some bureaucratic errors filing for certification caused a delay in their participation.

Meanwhile, all three of Maroon’s games have been close and in the latest a familiar opponent edged the Devils 56-55 in Sky Blue (D2-Holy family).

The two compete in the winter in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and Sky Blue is off to a 2-1 start, tied for third with Purple, a group of alums from D2-East Stroudsburg, which gained a narrow 52-51 win over Royal Blue, a combination-dominated group from D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury.

In the other of the five games, Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill), got its first win, easily topping Kelly Green (D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian) 74-57.

Four teams in Maroon, Royal Blue, Kelly Green, and Lime Green are tied for fifth but since it is still early in the season not enough games have been played to begin slotting teams in their tie-breaking seed placement slots for the playoffs.

As last summer, with just ten teams everyone makes the playoffs at the end of next month with seeds 7-10 and 8-9 meeting in the opening round doubleheader to advance two winners to the quarterfinals with the six bye teams.

At the bottom, Golden Sun (0-2) and Orange (0-2) are still looking for their first victory, though under normal circumstances, one of the duo would have a win by now.

That’s because the two were set to meet last Thursday but a wet floor caused by humid conditions following an evening downpour created a safety hazard and forced a postponement.

After the schedule resumes following the July fourth week-long break, a night will be slotted in which each of the duo will play their regularly scheduled game and then meet each other in an 8:15 p.m. nightcap.

Meanwhile, colleague Bob Heller is back on the scene and so this report will be the first to have re-cap detail from each of the five games.

Individual Performances

In our 20-points or more category to highlight nightly scoring performances, once again just three people hit the mark but this time all three are new and two came from the same Orange team with Kristin Hamill (Radnor High/Franklin & Marshall) getting the night’s top mark with 27 points and Courtney Hardy (Montclair) scoring 20.

Erin Doherty (Haverford High/Catholic U.)  had 22 to pace Lime Green to its first win.

Looking Ahead

The opening two weeks of play concludes Thursday night with games on all three courts at 7 p.m. followed by  nightcap doubleheaders at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1 and Court 2.

Then the schedule will go quiet all next week for the July 4th holiday.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., the two 2-1 teams of the Sky Blue group of Holy Family and Purple East Stroudsburg alums will met on Court 1 while 3-0 Red will be a strong favorite over 0-2 Golden Sun on Court 2.

An interesting matchup looms on Court 3 with 1-2 Royal Blue, the Kutztown/Salisbury combo meeting 0-2 Orange.

In the 8:15 p.m. nightcaps, 1-2 Kelly Green, the Millersville/Moravian group, meets 1-2 Maroon, the defending champs.

In what was expected to be the first super showdown, Black and Maroon meet right after the break so Maroon would like to avoid a loss Thursday, although several years ago one of the favorites suffered early losses but bounced back on a win streak to make the playoffs when not everyone qualified.

All that will be discussed in the next look ahead.

Now, here’s Bob with the recaps.

Recaps

Sky Blue 56, Maroon 55

Sky Blue rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to hand defending league champion Maroon its second loss of the season.

Maroon (also known as Division II USciences) had built a 45-32 lead late in the third quarter and 47-38 as the final period began.

The Devils still led by nine following Irisa Ye’s two free throws in the early minutes of the quarter.

Dana Dockery’s basket in the middle of a 13-0 run with 2:08 left gave Sky Blue, with the majority of the team hailing from Division II Holy Family University; their first lead since early in the second quarter at 50-49.

Free throws by Anjalai Hayes and Monee Moore pushed the lead to 53-49 with 28.7 seconds left.

Maroon’s Jess Huber then connected on a three point field goal; the team’s first basket of the quarter to close within one 53-52 with just 13.4 ticks left on the clock.

Elizabeth Radley made one of two from the charity stripe and Hayes sank two more to again open up a four point lead.

Jordan Vitelli’s three-ball as the buzzer sounded provided the final margin in the one point loss. Her basket at the buzzer was only the second field goal  by Maroon in the final quarter (in 14 total attempts).

Hayes led all scorers with 17 points while Radley (15 points) and Dockery (ten) also reached double digits for the victors.

Vitelli led Maroon with 14 points (four threes) while Brigit Coleman chipped in 11 (three threes).  Huber and Ye had ten points apiece.

Red 83, Orange 78

In other action, Team Red remained undefeated with a huge second half comeback to defeat Team Orange 83-78.

Team Red (players from D-II West Chester and D-III Gettysburg) trailed by 15 at half time and outscored Orange (also known as Ursinus) 26-11 over the first seven minutes of the third quarter.

Gabby Troisi’s basket at the 2:26 mark gave Red their first lead lead of the game 63-61 and the lead exchanged hands three more times before the teams went into the final quarter deadlocked at 70.

The Red squad came out on fire in the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points to take a 79-70 lead with 4:16 left.

A three-ball from Orange’s Gabby Downs closed the gap to five 79-74 and Kristin Hamill’s bucket at the 1:28 mark cut the gap to three 81-78.

Leah Johnson followed with a driving basket with just under a minute remaining to round out the scoring and seal the win for the Red Team who improves to 3-0 on the season.

Johnson led four Red players in double figures with 14 points while Sasha Marvel added 13.  McKenzie Tinner and Olivia Matto had 12 points apiece.

Orange had two players reach the 20-point plateau led by Hamill’s 27 points. Courtney Hary added 20 points while Gabby Downs scored 14.

 Black 84, Golden Sun 40

The league’s other unbeaten team, Black (also known as Jefferson University) had little trouble with Team Golden Sun (also known as Arcadia University), notching an 84-40 win to remain perfect at 3-0.

The Black squad produced a balanced scoring effort, placing five players in double figures, led by Caitlin Cunningham’s 15 points.

Ayanna Oguntuase added 14 points while Emily Keenfus chipped in 13.  Alexandra Warren and Sabria Lytes had 12 and 10 respectively.

Black jumped out to a double digit lead in the first quarter and expanded the margin to 21 points 48-27 at halftime and 34 at 74-37 at the end of three quarters before closing out the game with a 10-3 run in the fourth quarter.

Julia Makowski led Golden Sun with 12 points while Sami Falancki chipped in nine.

 Purple 52. Royal Blue 51

Melissa Poderis’ free throw in the waning seconds of the game lifted Team Purple to a 52-51 over Team Royal Blue.

The Purple squad whose composition mainly consists of alumni from East Stroudsburg University; led most of the way fending off several runs by the Royal Blue squad which consists mainly of players from Division II  Kutztown University and Division III Salisbury University.

The Royal squad held a 22-21 lead midway through the second quarter before Purple charged ahead, closing the period out on a 12-4 spurt to lead 33-26 at the break.

Royal came back with a 9-2 run to tie the game and 35-35 in the third quarter before Purple pulled ahead 41-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

A basket by Royal’s Kaylee Otkowski tied the game at 47-47 with 4:312 left but the Purple squad scored the next four points to lead 51-47 with 2:36 left.

Royal again rallied to tie the game at 51-51 with 55 seconds left before Poderis broke the deadlock with a single make from the charity stripe in the final seconds to seal the win.

Purple’s Sydney Blum led all scorers with 14 points. Emma Stanfield and Madison Tamburini chipped in ten apiece for the victors.  Otkowski and Karen Lapkiewicz had 12 points apiece for Royal.

Lime Green 74, Kelly Green 57

Team Lime Green, whose team is comprised of players mainly from Chestnut Hill College,
earned their first win of the season, defeating team Kelly Green 74-57.

Lime Green used an 11-2 run to erase a five point Kelly advantage in the first quarter to take a 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A three point basket from Kate Seeman and a layup from Samantha Brusha gave Kelly a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter.

Later in the period with the game tied at 22-22 Lime Green went on a 13-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back three pointers from Erin Doherty and Cassie Sebold to take a 35-24 lead at halftime.

Kelly Green rallied in the third quarter to take a 39-37 lead with Mia Leonard’s basket putting her team ahead.

Lime Green scored ten straight points to close out the quarter and the first seven in the fourth quarter completing a 17-0 run to take a 54-39 lead midway through the final period and maintained their double digit advantage the rest of the way en route to their first win.

Doherty led all scorers with 22 points while teammate Lauren Crim chipped in 14.

Sebold and Brianna Cullen had nine points apiece.  Brusha led the Kelly Green squad with 19 points while Seeman and Leonard had nine points apiece.

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.

Guru’s Musings: UConn WBB Return to Big East Has Collateral Effects

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

PHILADELPHIA — So far in recent weeks the most dangerous place the Guru has been is riding the rails returning the next day from a WNBA Connecticut Sun game at Mohegan.

No, there hasn’t been anything equipment-related nor has yours truly run into weather-related problems given the recent influx of heavy rains.

By coincidence, though, while hunkered down on the ride, major women’s hoops news has broken three different times.

Several weeks ago came the announcement of the hiring of Cathy Engelbert as the first WNBA commissioner succeeding four previous individuals in Val Ackerman, Donna Orender, Laurel J. Richie, and Lisa Borders.

Furthermore to the hire was the local hook in that Engelbert comes from Collingswood, a South Jersey suburb across the Delaware River from here and that she played for Notre Dame Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw when the former Saint Joseph’s star was running the Lehigh program.

The previous return trip occurred when the history-making announcement was made in Cal coach Lindsey Gottlieb joining the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers staff making her the first women’s collegiate coach to become part of an NBA staff.

Then came word during Saturday’s laid-back ride that the recent years of speculation was on the way to reality with the University of Connecticut about to become a Big East member once more albeit with a somewhat altered group of rivals — most familiar but a group devoid of Rutgers, Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Louisville, and Notre Dame.

The news focused more from the men’s side such as the Huskies men playing familiar rivals that could re-energy the fan base for the home games in Hartford and at the campus Gampel Pavilion.

Then there’s the fate of the football program, which must go elsewhere in that after this fall the welcome mat at the American Athletic Conference will be pulled and the current Big East configuration does not have football in its collection of sports championships.

That brings us to the powerful Geno Auriemma-coached women’s basketball program that has won a record 11 national titles and were it not for upsets in recent seasons in the final four, the Huskies might even possess a few more.

There is collateral effects that need to be addressed and a lot of questions that popped into the Guru’s mind needing to get answers of reaction.

Unfortunately, since the return here was completed late and it is even later as the Guru lives his vampire hours, in this case dining in the Voorhees Diner in South Jersey and writing this blog, targets needed for reaction are asleep.

But since the Awful Announcing website was the only place to address any of the Guru musings, here are things yet to be spoken to.

First and foremost, and Awful Announcing touched on it slightly, what is the fate of the life-long relationship with the UConn women and ESPN, the mega-sports network in nearby Bristol that was in part founded by UConn notables.

The Big East, after the breakup of the old order,  reconfigured in a new alignment that includes the longtime group of Villanova, St. John’s, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Providence, DePaul, Marquette, and the additions of Creighton, Butler and Xavier.

Commissioner Val Ackerman produced a nice contract with FOX Sports, of which the conference is only in the middle of a 12-year deal.

So after this season, based on looking at past Big East women’s TV schedules, the only times the Huskies might appear on other networks would be in non-conference matchups where the PAC-12, Big Ten, and Atlantic Coast Conferences have their own networks but are in alignment with ESPN.

And the folks from Bristol can’t exactly say it’s been nice knowing you since they own the NCAA tournament and,  barring a sudden decline, UConn will continue to be prominent in the season-long story line.

Next thought — what about the postseason conference women’s tournament?

Well, the AAC has been nicely-attended at Mohegan, which coincidentally is less than an hour from UConn’s campus.

Now imagine what the place might look like without the Huskies.

But not to worry.

By coincidence, next March will see the AAC and Mohegan come to the end of their current deal.

By equal coincidence, the current deal with the Big East and DePaul’s new Wintrust Arena, which the WNBA Chicago Sky also calls home, will conclude.

So, yes, that texting sound of joy from several conference coaches requesting anonymity is part of an eagerness of anticipation that the 2021 Big East women’s tournament at Mohegan is a no-brainer.

Prior to the breakup, many Big East mentors endorsed a move from the rundown Hartford XL Center to Mohegan only to be blocked by several Catholic institution presidents.

But once the bust up occurred, the football survivors under the new AAC had a site deal in a heartbeat.

Furthermore, since the change, every Big East women’s tournament has been in either Chicago or Milwaukee, devoid of Eastern media coverage on site, especially playing the same weekend as the AAC, which, of course, has had UConn in the field.

The conference will get that group back accentuated by the crowd that covers the Huskies.

OF course, whither the AAC move?

Several coaches seem to be on the same page as the Guru, thinking destination cities are best so assuming who will still be in the AAC, the best options seem to be Tampa Bay (USF). Orlando (UCF), Dallas (SMU),or New Orleans (Tulane).

Who might Auriemma retain for non-conference games.?

After the reconfiguration, the Huskies and Notre Dame (ACC) maintained their national rivalry as the same went for Louisville while UConn has continued to play DePaul, whose coach Doug Bruno was an Auriemma assistant on two Olympic gold medal squads in England and Brazil.

Best bets if schedules allow, for who UConn might still play,  are USF, UCF (has grown in recent seasons), Tulane (also as much good tourist trip), and Temple, whose coach Tonya Cardoza was a long-time Auriemma assistant.

The newest regard of Big East women’s basketball?

For all the bashing the AAC took with UConn’s dominating unbeaten record, not much may change here barring a Huskies decline.

Longtime UConn beat writer Carl Adamec after the word of the move got out, noted and listed of the current Big East group since 1995, the year of the Huskies’ first national title, the only triumphs over Auriemma’s teams came on a last-second St. John’s winning shot to spoil a long home victory streak and two triumphs from Villanova — the Big East title game in 2003 and a home win on the Main Line the following season.

The current Big East, of which DePaul and Marquette had the most success, has grown to be wide open and competitive but if that continues with the Huskies still able  to rule all of them, how lopsided will the top of the standings appear.

Whither Temple?

The Owls through the move are now in a no-woman’s land — I’ll let more informed types discuss the men’s team.

Temple becomes the sole geographically Eastern member of the AAC.

A tournament not near Philadelphia kills any kind of following from the Owls’ fan base, and in some places you can imagine how that component will be used by others recruiting the same players as Temple.

But once things become officially announced, more reaction on and off the record will be attainable.

Oh, and a memo to Val Ackerman.

It’s been reported the AAC was already planning a headquarters move from Providence, R.I., to Dallas, among several other locales under consideration.

That might mean some long-time AAC conference front office types like women’s honcho Barb Jacobs may be reluctant to make the move.

If so and if the Big East wbb tourney does head to Mohegan then hiring her, since she has the most experience dealing the event, either as a staffer or at least consultant has merit.

Stay Tuned.

Change at Princeton

Speaking of UConn, during the week, your Guru stopped by for the introductory press conference for new Princeton women’s basketball coach Carla Berube, who had a long stint of success at Division III Tufts in New England.

Berube, a member of UConn’s national championship in 1995, succeeds Courtney Banghart, who left for North Carolina after a decade of making the Tigers a dominate program in the Ivies, with some later challenges from Penn.

The school also became nationally prominent with Princeton becoming the only Ivy women’s program ever to be nationally ranked.

With Bella Alarie back for her senior season, the Tigers should still be in the hunt, though Banghart brought a certain swagger enjoyed by the media that will be missed (except by those of us who deal with her nationally).

But as Berube teammate, Hall of Famer Rebecca Lobo, noted up at Mohegan Friday night before doing her broadcast duties, “Listen, Carla has her own kind of swagger after playing for coach Auriemma.”

Though we retweeted everything Princeton sent out — beats transcribing — if you missed it, the Tigers’ website should have everything from the event.

In a brief chit-chat afterwards renewing old ties, the Guru noted to Berube that while much was made of her drawing a foul that sent her to the line to clinch the Huskies’ first national title, the Guru seems to recall, it was the first half when Lobo and Jen Rizzotti got into foul trouble, that he recalls Berube acting like a middle-inning reliever, in this case keeping the Huskies afloat to hold off Tennessee and win the title.

Sure enough, your Guru found an account of that action that was published in 2015 written by Lori Riley when the Hartford Courant was noting the 20th anniversary of the first championship.

We’ll close out here for now with that report.

Berube 3-13-15 courant excerpt

"I had to play [against Tennessee] because we were in foul trouble and trying to stop some of those Tennessee players who were a lot bigger than I was," she said.

"I remember Jamelle (Elliott) and Jen really calming us, saying, 'We can get this done.' I had a couple free throws at the end of that game."

Berube did her best against 6-3 Dana Johnson and 6-6 Vonda Ward when Lobo and Wolters were in foul trouble.

And after Rizzotti's famous crossover dribble and layup gave UConn a 63-61 lead, Lobo hit three free throws, Rizzotti two and Berube two to ice the 70-64 win.

"I think one of the most important lessons I learned [from that team] was that every single player on your team is valuable, whether they're playing 35 minutes a game or not getting into a game," Berube said.

"Treating every player with a lot of respect and making them feel as comfortable as possible.

“Missy Rose did not get into a lot of games but she was so vital to our team, the way she practiced every day made us better. Same with Colleen Healy.

"That had a lot to do with where I'm at today.

“ My career in general at UConn had a lot to do with coaching now and getting this job at Tufts as early as I did in my career after only two seasons at Providence College.

Having that on my resume is pretty nice."

Philly WBB Summer League: Black and Red Quickly Last Unbeatens

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — An historic postponement, two narrow wins, and a quick reduction to just two unbeaten teams marked the second night and end of the first week of competition Thursday in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The postponement, a so-called rain-in, we’ll get to further down involving Team Orange and Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia).

Meanwhile, Team Black (D2-Jeffferson), posted a lopsided 70-50 win over Kelly Green (D2-Millersvile/D3-Moravian), while Red (D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) edged Purple (D2-East Stroudsburg alums) 45-44 in one of the two closely fought outcomes to stay unbeaten at 2-0.

Red had beaten defending champion Maroon (D2-USciences) opening night on Tuesday to help create an early scramble.

The other narrow finish saw Maroon avoid an 0-2 start by edging Royal Blue (D2-Kutztown/D3 Salisbury) 59-57.

Royal Blue had come from behind to lead 57-56 when Maroon called time-out with 1:25 remaining.

They missed a shot when play resumed, but as Royal was trying to bring the ball back up the floor, Maroon’s Jess Huber out of North Penn High before joining the Devils stole it and the hit a three-pointer from the right wing.

This put Maroon ahead 59-57 with a minute to go.

When Huber blocked a shot at the other end, Royal was able to maintain possession, but then turned the ball over out-of-bounds with 33 seconds to go.

Maroon’s last offensive possession ended with a missed lay-up on a drive down the lane, but Royal also missed on its final shot of the game.

Huber, who was one of three players to hit the 20 or more points category on opening night, was one of three again Thursday with another round of prolific three-point shooting. She nailed seven from beyond the arc for 27 points.

Maroon also got 12 points from Jordan Vitelli and 10 from Kendall Keyes.

Kutztown’s Karen Lapkiewicz had 11 to lead Royal Blue while Alyssa Bondi of Misericordia had three triplets to fuel her team high-matching 11 points and Erin Lindahl, an Emory senior, scored eight.

With Bob Heller handling duties elsewhere this week we didn’t get a detailed report on how the other close finish occurred in terms of being buzzer-beaters, rallies, or holding off rallies down the stretch.

Special thanks to Tom Utescher of the Chestnut Hill Local for details of the Maroon-Royal Blue Battle.

In the other of four games played, Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) romped over Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill) 71-29. The two teams are winter rivals who compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The winners were led by Elizabeth Radley, who scored 16, while Dana Dockery had 15 points, Meghan O’Connell scored 11 off three dimes, Casey Schweitzer scored 10 and Anjelai Hayes scored nine. All of them are on Holy Family’s squad.

Alana Cardona of Indiana U. of Pa. scored 12 and Lauren Crim of Chestnut Hill scored 11 for the Lime Green squad.

In the Black 70-50 win over Kelly Green, Caitlyn Cunningham nailed six from beyond the arc to propel her 24 points and join repeaters Maroon’s Huber’s and Kelly Green’s Samantha Brusha in the 20 or more points category.

Alynna Williams added 17 points of three treys for Black while Haley Meinel scored 10.

Behind Millersville’s Brusha’s 25 points off five three treys for Black’s opponent, Mia Leonard, also from Millersville, scored 13.

In Red’s narrow 45-44 win over Purple, Leah Johnson, a West Chester freshman, had three treys on the way to 17 points while the rest of the other seven players accounted for the remaining 28 points.

Purple had the same dynamic in the tough setback as Emma Blewett of Albright had three threes and scored 11 and the remaining eight players compiled the other 33 points.

The result of all this saw five teams tied at 1-1 behind the 2-0 Black and Red squads being Kelly Green, Royal Blue, Purple, Maroon, and  Sly Blue, followed by the postponed participants of Golden Sun (0-1) and Orange (0-1), the lone team with no roster dominations by other schools, and Lime Green (0-2) at the bottom.

Unlike seasons when the league had more than 10 teams, everyone will make the playoffs that begin in late July in which the bottom four teams will meet in the opening round advancing two winners to join the other six teams in the quarterfinals.

The championship game will be August 6 at 7 p.m.

As for the category of special individual performances of 20 or more points, as alluded to in the results descriptions, the pattern repeats from Tuesday openers, just three, two of them in one game, and two of the standouts from Thursday also hit the mark on opening night.

As mentioned, Maroon’s Huber, who had 23 points in the loss to Red, fired seven three-pointers on the way to the night’s top performance with 27 points to help her squad avoid a second straight loss in edging Royal Blue.

Black’s Cunningham also was prolific from beyond the arc in nailing six treys on the way to 24 points while Kelly Green’s Brusha, who hit the category on opening night, had five triplets to score 25 for Black’s opponent.

Looking Ahead

On Tuesday night to lead off the second week before the schedule goes idle across the July 4 two-night break Red and Black will be strongly favored to stay on top and unbeaten meeting the two teams that were forced to sit out the action due to the floor condition.

Black (2-0) will meet Golden Sun (0-1) at 8:15 on Court 2 while Red (2-0) will meet Orange (0-1) on Court 1, also at 8:15 p.m.

Two 1-1 teams meet at 7 on Court 1 when Royal Blue hooks up with Purple as both try to stay close to the leaders.

Another 1-1 matchup at the same time will occur on Court 3 as Maroon meets Sky Blue. The two teams on Court 3 are also CACC winter rivals.

In the remaining game, Kelly Green (1-1) meets Lime Green (0-2), which will be looking for its first win, at 7 on Court 2.

Weather Causes Indoor Havoc and First Postponement

As noted at the top of this report, outside downpour caused problems indoor when a wet floor on Court 1 caused Orange and Golden Sun, both 0-1, to not be able to play their nightcap.

The court wasn’t in great condition in the earlier game but the players who slipped on a couple of moves opted to keep the game going though their parents were less than thrilled.

Here’s   how director David Kessler filed the situation to the blog here and he’ll likely say something similar on the league’s facebook page and the Tuesday night edition of his newsletter.

“Game 2 on Court 1 was postponed because of wet, hazardous conditions on the floor.

“Excessive humidity caused condensation to form on the floor and it became much too slippery to continue.

“After conferring with game officials, players, and even some parents chimed, it was simply too dangerous for the players, especially after seeing Game 1 players (Lime-Sky) slipping when they made sharp cuts.

“Court 2 was able to play their 2 games.

“Court 3 only had a 7:00 game and it was played after standing water that had been wind swept under the door in the wake of an earlier violent storm had been mopped up”.

While it’s the first time a postponement has occurred since the recent move to Kelly Bolish Gym from the previous locale of Northeast High, it’s not the first delay in the history of the league, according to the ccommissioner.

Kessler recalled that the last postponement had been in the late 90s when the league played at Textile (currently Jefferson University).

One of the gyms had a leaky roof and because it was scheduled to be razed, the roof was not repaired.

So on Thursday, even though the league was played indoors, a game was postponed because of...…...rain.

Kessler thought something similar had happened in the NBA.

A Google search revealed that a Boston Celtic-Atlanta Hawk game had this problem on Wednesday November 28, 1990.

Unseasonably high temperatures approaching 80 had occurred in the Boston area that day.

And since the parquet floor was situated on the NHL Bruins' ice, condensation had formed on the surface.

The teams made a valiant effort but the game was halted with 10:30 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

The postponed game will be played on one of the 4 dates that Orange and Sun each have regularly scheduled 7:00 games against other teams.

The two teams will then play each other at 8:15 on the vacant Court 3.

The two teams playing a doubleheader will be a first for the league but, as Kessler joked, "The players have all played more than that when they played pick-up ball on the playground."

If you are driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the turnpike after you cross the rail line, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.
