Philly Women's Summer Basketball League: Maroon Gaines Top Seed in 4-Way Tie After Upset in Two Overtimes

HATBORO, Pa. – Two upsets through the standings leveled the last two unbeaten teams Thursday night in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA-Certified Summer Basketball League as Orange or the Holy Family group recovered from Tuesday’s loss by taking an 83-63 win over Royal Blue or the Kutztown group while in the most exciting and competitive game of the night on the six-game, three-doubleheader card had Maroon or the USciences group edge Forest Green or the West Chester group 73-69 in double overtime.

And so with just under half the games completed on the 11-game regular season schedule in the 12-team league at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, there is a four-game tie for first at 4-1 each.

If the season ended right now, nine teams would be in the mix for the eight playoff spots, with one that would be eliminated through tiebreakers before the quarterfinals got under way on Thursday, July 27.

But, of course, there’s much more to come after the break and night off Tuesday because of the July 4th holiday.

Meanwhile, just a game behind, Sun or the Ursinus group, through a 76-46 win over Pink or the Penn State-Abington group, and Electric Green through a 74-55 win over Purple or the Delaware Valley bunch, moved into a tie for fifth.

Three more teams moved into a tie seventh with Sky Blue off an 88-72 loss to Red, the Chestnut Hill group, which picked up its first win of the summer, Black or the Philadelphia U. soon to be known as Jefferson University in the real world, off a 61-45 loss to White, which snapped a surprising two-game losing streak and became part of the three-way deadlock, are all at 2-3.

Still in contention, though currently out of the playoff mix trailing by one game for postseason consideration, are Red off its win over Sky Blue and Pink at 1-4.

Purple, or, as mentioned, the Delaware Valley group, remains the only winless team at 0-5.

Meanwhile, the Guru’s nightly standard for individual performance at 20 or more points, continues to be more exclusive with just four players hitting the mark off of points, the only stat kept by the crews.

This time however, all four were on winning teams, though Saint Joseph’s senior Chelsea Woods failed to make the number.

But Jess Huber of USciences, the Maroon team had 33 points for the night’s best performances and one of the best of the season as the North Penn graduate made her season debut on the list.

While Woods missed for the first time this season, her Hawks senior classmate Amanda Fioravanti is the only person to qualify for the list all five nights to date as she scored 26 points.

The other two players made their debuts with Vicki Tumaz, a North Penn grad on the Chestnut Hill Red team, and Katie O’Hare, an Orange/Holy Family player out of Bayard Rustin each scoring 20 points.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday next week when the action resumes after the Tuesday break for the holidays, two big showdowns on Court 1 at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. will have 3-2 teams playing 4-1 teams as Forest Green or West Chester meets Sun or Ursinus at 7 p.m. followed by Electric Green playing Maroon.

White plays at 7 p.m. on Court 3 meeting Pink seeking to further get back closer to playoff contention.

Royal Blue at 8:15 p.m. plays Black on Court Court 2.


Breaking Ties

Key heads-to-heads still need to be played and some getting more things even up are necessary but the tiebreaks have been helpful to slot seed positions now as they exist in their most true form for the summer.

Remember in the case of multi ties beyond head-to-head considerations between two teams, mini-league standings need to be created for tabulation purposes.

In the four-way tie for first, Maroon off a 1-0 record in the group beating Forest Green gets the No. 1 slot, with Forest Green at 1-1 getting the second slot for beating Orange, also 1-1, but Forest Green also has a card usage of goodies that potentially sets up a trip in the Sound.

In the two-way for fifth, Electric Green gets the better slot for beating Sun, head to head.

There is a three-way for seventh with Sky Blue at 1-0 getting the first slot off the record within the group, White getting the eighth slot at 1-1, and Black at eighth.

Red and Pink are tied for the other slot at 1-1 but it appears Red off a win over Sky Blue gets to set the league table in the slots at 10th.

Maroon 73, Forest Green 69, 2 Overtimes

Freshman Jessica Huber tore up the court for 33 points while teammate Marissa Sylvester, a Nazareth Academy grad, made an uncontested layup at the buzzer to force overtime as Team Maroon, also known as USciences handed Team Forest Green, also known as West Chester University their first loss of the season 73-69 in double overtime.

Huber, who had five three-balls and was 9-for-11 from the line, was the lone Maroon player in double figures with 33 points.  Irisa Ye had nine points, Alex Thomas had seven, while Laura Trisch, Sylvester, and Colleen Walsh, each scored six points.

Jennifer Horvatinovic, a recent Tampla grad, and Mia Hopkins, a Pittston Area grad, led Forest Green with 18 and 15 points respectively. Hopkins also had three three-balls. Katie Feehery, a Scranton senior and Cardinal O’Hara grad, and Katie Fischer, a Strath Haven grad, each scored eight points.

 Horvatinovic’s two free throws with 31.8 seconds left in regulation had given Forest Green a five point lead 58-53.

 Alyx McKiernan’s layup and one brought Maroon within two before Horvatinovic sank two more from the charity stripe with 16.7 seconds left to but her team up four 60-56.

Sylvester followed with a layup to make the score 60-58 and Horvatinovic was fouled again with 7.3 seconds left.

The recent University of Tampa graduate out of Red Lions High School however, missed both giving Maroon one last chance.  A couple of quick passes up the court found Sylvester all alone under the basket for a game tying layup at the buzzer forcing the overtime.

Hopkins opened the scoring in the first overtime with a pair of free throws to put Forest Green ahead 62-60.

 Laura Trisch followed with two trips to the free throw line making three of four to give Maroon a one point lead 63-62.

A defensive hold by the USciences squad led to a Huber layup and a three point lead. Huber added a free throw 17 seconds later to put Maroon up four before Horvatinovic nailed a three-pointer to close the gap to one, 66-65.  Two more Huber free throws followed before Katie Fisher forced a second overtime with a three-ball with 9.8seconds left.

Maroon controlled the second overtime, starting with the opening jump and getting on the board first via an Irisa Ye (9 points) layup.

 Forest Green went to the free throw line on their next two possessions but could only make one of four shots and trailed 70-69 with just under a minute to go. Alex Thomas added a free throw and Huber scored the last of her 33 points with two more free throws with 15.7 seconds left to provide the final points in the 73-69 win.

Forest Green scored the game’s first 12 points and led by 12 after one quarter before Maroon turned up the defense and started making shots on offense, outscoring Forest Green 19-2 over the first nine minutes to take their first lead of the game before settling for a 25-25 tie at the break.

 Huber had 11 second quarter points (including three three-point field goals).  Six third quarter lead changes kept the game close with neither team leading by more than six the rest of regulation.

Both teams are now 4-1 on the season.

Orange 83, Royal Blue 63

The league’s other undefeated team also went down to defeat on Thursday as Team Orange, also known as Holy Family University, handily defeated  previously unbeaten Team Royal Blue, also known as Kutztown University 83-63.

The win places both teams in a four-way tie for first place along with Maroon and Forest Green with 4-1 records.  

Katie O’Hare led the Orange squad with 20 points while Liz Radley, a Bishop Eustace grad,  added 18.  Jada Smith, a Merion Mercy Academy  chipped in 13.

Michaela Clay was the lone player in double figures for the shorthanded Royal Blue squad (6 players), scoring 12 points.

Orange led the game wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 14-1 advantage in the first quarter leading to a 22-10 lead heading into the second quarter.  The eventual winners extended their lead to 27-11 before the Royal Blue squad started to chip  away , cutting the deficit to single digits in the final two minutes and went into the halftime break trailing by nine 40-31.

Orange opened the third quarter with an 11-6 run capped by a pair of O’Hare free throws to take a 51-37 lead.  The two teams exchanged baskets over the final three minutes of third quarter as Orange held a 60-47 lead heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Orange started to pull away in the fourth quarter with a 15-8 run over the first 6:23 to take a 20-point lead at 75-55 before settling in for the 83-63 win.

Red 88, Sky Blue 72 

Team Red, also known as Chestnut Hill College, earned their first win of the summer season with an 88-72 triumph over Team Sky Blue

The Red squad placed five players in double figures led by senior Vicky Tumasz’s 18 points.

 Kristen Hamill, a Franklin and Marshall sophomore out of Radnor HS, scored 18 while Cassie Sebold, a recent Archbishop Wood HS graduate added 15.   Lafayette College freshman and St. Basil’s Academy graduate Natalie Kuckowski scored 13 points and Bianca Piccardo added 12.

Team Sky was led by Catholic University sophomore Taylor Dunn’s 12 points. Katie Jekot, an incoming freshman at St. Joseph’s University chipped in 10 while Emory University sophomore Erin Lindahl had 11 points.

Team Red led by as many as 30 points midway through the third quarter before Sky Blue started to chip away at the huge deficit in the fourth quarter.

With the score 73-45 at the start of the final period, Sky Blue embarked on a 20-7run, cutting the Red lead to 15, 80-65 with a little over four minutes to play.

 A 6-2 mini-run by Red however, took the sails out of the possible Sky Blue comeback effort, giving Red a 19-point lead 86-67 withjust under two minutes to go.  Sebold’s bucket with 1:20 left was the final points for Team Red as they cruised to the 16-point win.

White 61, Black 45

Team White got back on the winning track after dropping three straight games with a 61-45 win over Team Black, also known as Philadelphia University and soon to be called Thomas Jefferson University.

Black has now dropped three in a row after opening the season with two wins.  Both teams hold 2-3 records.  

St. Joseph’s senior Amanda Fiorvanti led all scorers in the game with 26 points for Team White, her fifth consecutive 20+ point game.  Mary Sheehan, an incoming St. Joe’s freshman out of Cardinal O’Hara HS added 12 points.

Senior Rachel Day led Team Black with 12 points while sophomore Caitlyn Cunningham chipped in 11.

Black jumped out to early 4-0 and 6-4 leads before white closed out the first quarter with a 9-4 flourish to take a 13-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

White dominated the second ten minutes of action, limiting black to just four points while outscoring their opponent 21-4 to take a 34-14 lead at the half.  Fiorvanti had ten second quarter points, including eight of Team White’s first 14.

A 9-6 run to open the third quarter gave White a 23-point lead at 43-20 before Black shaved the deficit back under 20 points, scoring the final five points of the quarter to trail 51-33 heading into the final period.

White opened the final stanza with a 9-6 flourish to lead 60-36 with six minutes remaining. Team Black then scored nine of the final ten points to make the final score 61-45.

 Sun 76, Pink 46

Team Sun, also known as Ursinus College, exploded for 45 second half points as they pulled away with a 76-46 win over Team Pink, also known as Penn State-Abington.

Lydia Konstanzer, an Ursinus sophomore out of Pennridge HS led Sun with 18 points.  Kristin Daley, a Penn junior added 17 while Alana Davidson, a recent New-Hope Solebury graduate who will be attending Davidson University in the fall, chipped in ten.

Junior Shayna Rodriguez led Team Pink with 12 points.  Sydney Barrow, out of Valley Forge Military College, chipped in 11.

A four point game at halftime, Team Sun used a 17-8 third quarter to open a 48-35 lead.

 Toni Suler, Liana Weishaar and Daley then combined to scored the first ten points of the fourth quarter, blowing the game open at 58-35.   Barrow’s bucket at the 6:19 mark broke the streak but was the lone Pink points in a 22-2 uprising by Sun to start the fourth quarter, giving Sun their biggest lead at 70-37 before settling in for the thirty point win.

Electric Green 74, Purple 55

 Team Electric Green won their third straight game with a 74-55 victory over winless Team Purple, also known as Delaware Valley University.

Freire Charter graduate and St. Joseph’s senior Chelsea Woods led Electric Green with 13 points.   Jessica Gerber added 13 while Jaryn Garner chipped in 10.

Danielle Skedzielewski led Team Purple with 17 points.  Brittany Wood added 14 while Sarah Wills chipped in ten.

The Electric Green squad closed out the first quarter with an 18-4 floutrish to take control of the game with a 23-9 lead.

Purple came out strong in the second period, outscoring their opponent 12-3 over the first five minutes to close within five 26-21.   A basket from Garner and two from Woods put the Electric Green squad back up by double figures 32-21.  Purple outscored Electric Green 9-7 over the final 3:26 of the period to close within nine 39-30 at the break.

Electric Green extended their lead with a 13-6 spurt to open the third quarter and built the margin to 20, 61-41 by the end of the period.  They took their biggest lead at 72-49 before settling in for the 74-55 win.

WNBA Gamer I: No Doubting Thomas as Both Former ACC Stars Lead Sun over Storm

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No matter how one approaches the results, when it comes to the performances of two of the stars of the WNBA Connecticut Sun’s 96-89 thriller Thursday night over the Seattle Storm here at the Mohegan Sun Arena there’s no doubting Thomas, either of one of them.

Jasmine Thomas, the former Duke standout, had a career high 29 points, shooting 12-for-16 from the field. Including 4-of-6 three-pointers, while dealing six assists, alongside teammate Alyssa Thomas, the third-year pro out of Maryland who had 17 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field and dealing nine assists as the home team got back to .500 at 7-7 and also dispensed with a brief two-game losing streak.

Meanwhile former George Washington star Jonquel Jones in her second season in the league, had 13 points and 10 rebounds, having entered the contest with a league-best 12.1 average dominating the boards.

Shekinna Stricklen, the former Tennessee standout, also scored in double figures with 14 points, shooting 5-for-10, while former South Florida star Courtney Williams had eight points. Off the bench two former Big Ten Conference greats – Penn State alum Alex Bentley and recent Minnesota star Rachel Banham -  had seven and six points respectively.

As a team, the Sun sizzled from the field, shooting 56.5 percent from the field.

This game is one a WNBA marketing wonk working for the Sun could bottle and savor on a chilly winter‘s night in the offseason winter.

Connecticut celebrated its 15th birthday in front of a near-sellout crowd of 8, 668, as a reincarnated franchise after relocation from Orlando, where it played in Florida as the Miracle.

In a thrilling finish, the Sun managed to squander all but one of a commanding 17-point lead in the fourth quarter before applying the breaks on Stricklen’s 17-foot jumper with 1 minute, six seconds left in regulation, followed by a Courtney Williams steal that led to a Jasmine Thomas layup with 33.8 left in regulation.

Jonquel Jones then went 1-for-2 while Jasmine Thomas also went 1-for-2 from the line for the night’s final scoring by both teams.

At halftime, past Sun stars Rebecca Lobo and Nykesha Sales, both former UConn greats of which Lobo will be into inducted into the Naismith Springfield Basketball Hall of Fame in September, and Katie Douglas were interviewed before the crowd on the crowd to talk about the glory days of the Sun past.

But the play of the presence, especially in recent weeks in which injuries have become the mother of newfound success, were what had the juices of second-year coach Curt Miller flowing.

“Proud of our team tonight,” he said afterwards. “That’s a big, big win for us in that stretch. It’s not easy to win a game in this league … when this is our fourth game in seven days. Our players mustered up the energy to make plays in that fourth quarter when that game got real tight.

“Give a lot of credit to Seattle. Both teams shot tremendous from the field and the three-point line. Both teams shared the basketball. It was a really, really, well-played game. I’m proud that when Seattle made that run – they had stretches all night long, they started the fourth quarter shooting eight for 11, they got really hot down the stretch to make it interesting.

“But for us, we mustered up the energy – fourth game in seven days and an important game as we go back on the road for two more.”

Connecticut will be in Indianapolis Saturday night visiting the Indiana Fever before traveling to San Antonio Wednesday night and then coming back home to host Washington in a big showdown next Saturday night and then visiting Seattle on July 12th and completing the back-to-back visiting the defending WNBA champion Los Angeles the next night.

As for the emergence of the two Thomas’, Miller said, “Jasmine Thomas had a tremendous game and stayed aggressive, they gave her different looks on ball screens, they gave her different defenders, Sue (Bird) was on her, Jewell (Loyd) was on her, and she just kept being aggressive.

“She’s playing with so much confidence right now, she’s shooting the ball so well from the three-point line, she’s always been a tremendous athlete and had that mid-range game but now … she’s that much tougher to guard. She just has a confidence that she can make plays when we really need them.

“Alyssa Thomas has just excelled from the unintended consequences of our injuries, she’s turning out to quickly prove she’s one of the elite fours in the league. What we really like about her, she’s a forward who can be a contributor and you can elicit through her.

“Nine assists again tonight. We’ve had to go with this alignment out of necessity. What she is is unselfish,” Miller said of Alyssa Thomas, “and try to find the matchups that can help us throughout the game.”

This was Uconn night with alums off both rostersm featuring bird, second-year pro Breanna Stewart, and the injured Kalenna Mosqueda Lewis on the youthful Seattle squad that fell to 6-8, besides former Notre Dame great Loyd, and former Boston College star Carolyn Swords, while the injured Morgan Tuck is on Connecticut.

Stewart had 22 points, Loyd 21, Bird 16, connecting on all three of her attempts beyond the arc; and former Maryland great Crystal Langhorne out of Willingboro in suburban Philadelphia, scoring 14. Stewart completed a double double with 10 rebounds.

The Storm, who will host next month’s All-Star game on July 22, and Sun, each hit 10 three-balls.

Seattle had gotten off to a hot start, winning five of its first seven games, but now has lost three straight, and six of seven.

Next up for the Storm is a visit to the Dallas Wings Saturday before hosting New York next Thursday, Los Angeles next Saturday, and Connecticut on July 12 that will be part of a five-straight home stretch heading into the All-Star break.




       
   

WNBA Gamer II: Washington Bench Ignites Win Over New York

WASHINGTON – The Washington Mystics’ “Bench Mob” is the best in the WNBA.

The terrific triumvirate of Tiana Hawkins, Natasha Cloud, and Ivory Latta proved it again as they ignited a slumbering offense and fueled a tenacious defensive effort that produced a satisfying 67-54 triumph over the New York Liberty at the Verizon Center Thursday night.

“It was an ugly game, but we were able to execute defensively,” Cloud said. “To get a solid win over a good team like this is huge especially since we are heading out on a five-game road trip.

 “We did a great job of disrupting New York’s offense. There’s no dropoff in our play when our bench comes in because we continue to bring the energy and pick up the starters. Whenever our number’s called, we’re ready. We are always focused on our roles and that helps us.”

It was the Mystics’ third straight double-digit victory in five days. The Mystics (10-5 overall) became the third team to reach 10 wins this season joining the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks.

The Liberty (7-6) lost for the third time in its last four outings.

Combing for 30 entertaining points, they put their signature on this victory early by making an immediate impact.

Trailing, 15-4, seven minutes into the game, Hawkins, Cloud, and Latta entered and detonated for 14 consecutive Washington points to help erase the inconvenience of the Mystics’ early 11-point deficit.

Latta, who made four 3-pointers, finished with 15 points. In addition to her scoring, Latta recorded the 850th assist of her career when she found Hawkins for a layup with 8:21 remaining in the second quarter, tying the game at 15.

Hawkins added 13 points and Cloud, the former Saint Joseph’s star out of Cardinal O’Hara and native of Broomall, Pa., in suburban Philadelphia, contributed two points in 23 minutes.

However, Cloud was a major nuisance throughout the game as the Mystics held New York 28 points below its season scoring average. The Mystics also finished with a season-low point total.

“It was rewarding to know that we were able to defend well tonight and stop one of their best players,” Hawkins said. “We had a great game plan tonight and we stuck to it. Playing against Tina (Charles) is always fun and challenging.

“She’s a great player. Physical and she’s just a beast down low. I am proud of the small things that we bring to the game like screening the ball, getting a few steals and being a spark off of the bench.”

While Latta and Hawkins had terrific “and-one” three-point plays in the second half, the duo combined for the signature play of the contest in the fourth quarter. Hawkins set a nice screen that allowed Latta to sink a wide-open 3-pointer to expand the Mystics’ lead to 56-38 with 7:00 remaining.

Hawkins scored seven straight points that bridged the third and fourth quarters. When she finished her scoring binge, the Mystics lead went from 44-34 to 51-34. Hawkins and Latta combined for 11 of the Mystics’ 21 fourth quarter points.

Washington took control of the contest with a dominating and suffocating third quarter performance that limited the Liberty to seven points on 2-for-12 shooting.

The Liberty would have had an easier time escaping from Riker’s Island than it did in trying to solve the Mystics defense.

In outscoring the Liberty, 14-7, in the third quarter, the Mystics forced nine of New York’s 19 turnovers. The Mystics held the Liberty scoreless for a 5:12 stretch of the third quarter. That enabled Washington to stretch its 32-27 halftime edge to 46-34 entering the final period.

“We basically talked since the first day of training camp – you’re going to have ugly shooting nights – hopefully not like this, but if we learn how to defend, we can win some of those games,” Washington head coach Mike Thibault said. “Our bench bailed us out and they just energized us. On both ends of the floor, too.

“I thought [Cloud] was all over the place defensively, helping people and getting her hands on the ball. And Ivory and Tianna were aggressive offensively.”

Their nightly performance was appreciated by all including Mystic headliners: Elena Delle Donne and Tayler Hill, who combined to shoot 4-for-27.

Delle Donne, who finished with nine rebounds, also added 15 points for the Mystics.

When asked if she thought the Mystics had the best bench in the league, Hill responded in her typical succinct style while receiving a white envelope containing her per diem for the Mystics upcoming road trip.

“I agree with that,” said Hill, who recorded the 100th steal of her career with 9:22 remaining in the third quarter. “’Coach can play one through 12 or start anybody on any given night. I think our bench did an excellent job of coming in tonight and sparking us.

“The chemistry we’re developing is exciting. It’s fun to see everybody come in and do their part and watch somebody have a big night. We all get along with each other and we’re cheering for one another so that what makes it so much fun.”

In finishing with a team-high 17 points, Shavonte Zellous reached double figures for the eighth straight game. Epiphanny Prince added 12 points for New York. Kia Vaughn paced the Liberty with nine rebounds. Tina Charles, who faced constant double teams throughout the game, scored eight points on 3-of-15 shooting.

Despite her shooting woes, Charles did have a significant achievement.

With her third rebound in the first quarter Tina Charles moved past Lauren Jackson for 10th place in WNBA history in rebounding. She finished the game with eight rebounds and is in ninth place in league history with 2,453 rebounds.

Playing the first of a four-game road trip, the Liberty played without third leading scorer Sugar Rodgers (13.3 ppg.) due to a lower back injury. Her status is day-to-day.

“I think that we made some sloppy passes, had fair amount of travels, tried to do too much offensively because we were struggling offensively,” New York head coach Bill Laimbeer said. “I thought our defense played very solid. We had a good defensive game plan and executed it well.

"Offensively we struggled, I've got to do a better job of getting players more movement and getting players in positions where they can take advantage of their skills.”

Up Next

Both teams return to action Sunday. The Liberty continue its four-game road trip in Atlanta at 6 p.m. The Mystics start a five-game road trip in Los Angeles at 5 p.m. Overall, Washington will play six of its seven games on the road. The Mystics play two home games in July vs. Atlanta (July 19) and vs. Connecticut (July 28).

Rob Knox's WNBA Report: Seattle's Ageless Sue Bird Plays Like She's Drinking From the Fountain of Youth

Proving that age is just a number and a state of mind, Sue Bird’s gorgeous game continues to stand the test of time like a fine merlot.

 Currently leading the WNBA in assists at 7.4 per game, the 36-year-old Bird isn’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Still zipping around the court like a toddler at recess, Bird is still
performing an elite level and occasionally fracturing fibulas (more on that later).

 Bird has spent her entire career with the Seattle Storm raising the bar of excellence for the point guard position. She has always been about doing whatever the team needs to win.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she’s not concerned with being six assists away from the 2,500-career plateau, a mark only one other WNBA player (Ticha Penicherio) has reached.

 The Sysosett, New York native doesn’t care that she’s 106 assists away from becoming the WNBA’s all-time leader in that sacred statistic. All she knows is that her assists has helped fuel the furnaces burning inside of her teammates and led to plenty of winning, smiling and high-fiving.

 “I don’t think about it unless I get asked questions,” Bird said during Wednesday’s conference call in advance of Thursday’s game at Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. “Becoming the all-time assist leader wasn’t something on my bucket list.

“I guess (being close to achieving that milestone) speaks to longevity and consistency. My only focus has always been to help your team win. I am sure 10 to 15 years from now and if the record stands for that long, then that’s something I’ll look back on and be proud of. Right now, it’s never been part of my day to day mentality.”

 The Storm (6-7 overall) will look to right its ship and recover from its current stretch where it has lost five of its last six games, including a 100-70 loss at Washington on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Sun (6-7) have dropped two straight games after a five-game winning streak.

 The game will match two of the league leaders in their respective categories. While Bird leads the league in assists, second-year Connecticut forward Jonquel Jones, a former George Washington standout, is the current chairwoman of the glass, leading the league in rebounding (12.2 per game).

 In addition, this contest matches two of the best shooting teams in the WNBA. The Sun lead the league in 3-point field goal percentage (43.5). Meanwhile, the Storm are third overall in field goal percentage (46.7).

 It’s one of two key Thursday games as the Mystics (9-5) host the New York Liberty (7-5) at the Verizon Center at 7 p.m. (Guru note: Yours truly will be at Mohegan, SEPTA, NJT,Metro North, Amtrak permitting. Rob will be in Washington.)

Bird, who starred at Connecticut and played with other recent WNBA career-achiever Diana Taurasi,  always looks forward to visiting the Nutmeg State as a professional.

This season, thanks to the schedule makers, this will be the first of two stops in Connecticut. The Storm return on Tuesday, August 8.

 “It’s always a trip along with New York, I circle and look forward to,” Bird said. “I am able to connect with friends and family. I have some great memories here basketball-wise. Everytime I fly into Hartford, you can feel it. The Connecticut fans always say thanks.”

 One day the basketball world will thank Bird for her contributions to the sport once she’s inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield (Mass.). A shrine of brilliance, Bird has done everything possible in the game. She’s a nine-time All-Star, five-time All-WNBA selection, four-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time WNBA champion.

 She led the WNBA in assists last season and is on her way to doing that again. Bird's ball-handling wizardry, leadership, and tenacity have been her hallmarks of enduring excellence.

 Speaking of ball-handling, Bird had a move last year while playing for Team USA against Australia in exhibition in New York that earned her the top play on SportsCenter’s Top 10 following the game.

 Exquisitely executing a two-step, Bird broke the ankles of an Australian defender with Allen Iverson-like ferocity.

 In doing the basketball version of the “Whip and Nae-Nae”, Bird made the Aussie defender wobble, fall down and disappear.

Madison Square Garden shook following that highlight.

That move brought the delighted crowd out of their seats and her fired-up teammates off the bench in appreciation.

 The Sun will celebrate its 15th season in Connecticut Thursday after relocating from Orlando where the franchise used to be the Miracle.

That moment allowed Bird to reflect on the growth of the WNBA and look toward its future especially since she plays on a daily basis with two dynamite talents in Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart.

 “There’s a lot to be proud of where the WNBA was and where it is now,” Bird said. “The platform we have as players along with a variety of things allows us to make an impact. There’s also a lot of off-court initiatives that you didn’t see 15 years ago.

Philly Women's Summer Basketball League: Forest Green and Royal Blue Stay Unbeaten at 4-0

Updated Wednesday/pre-Thursday to reflect some number adjustments and additional scorers to be in synch with the commissioner's official newsletter of the night.

HATBORO, Pa. –  As they say in racing of all sorts, human, auto, or animal, the 11-game summer schedule of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA-Certified Summer Basketball League passed the first quarter turn Tuesday night with four games completed by each of the 12 teams and if the regular season had just ended. there would be a clear eight teams for the playoffs that will begin with quarterfinal action July 27.

How they would be seeded is a different story and the standings heading into Thursday’s action at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades here, reflect that positioning prior to the July 4 break next Tuesday with, of course, one more turn of the dial to come this week.

But, of course, things are still uneven, a ton of head-to-head battles to reshuffle the deck are still to be played, though hopefully on the final night the Guru won’t be facing the nightmare of several years ago breaking and seeding what was a six-way tie stretching through ten spots to eliminate two teams and set up the pairings for the rest.

Because of the seasonal tracker, which is way down below, the job got done in 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, unlike last Thursday, nothing went to the wire Tuesday night and only four players reached the Guru’s nightly citation of scoring 20 or more points ( point are all that’s all that’s kept for you stat freaks about to ask the question).

The Saint Joseph’s senior duo of Amanda Fioravanti and Chelsea Woods continued to attack the basket on separate squads, hitting the standard a perfect four-for-four nights with Fioravanti scoring a league season-high 41 points in yet another loss for White, which is normally among the frontrunners, and Woods, the Cheltenham grad who dominated the league last summer, scoring 30 for Electric Green, which made it to .500 at 2-2.

Mia Hopkins, a senior and Pittston-Area grad on the Forest Green/West Chester squad, who hit the mark once this season, scored 20 in the battle of the unbeatens 61-48 win over the Orange/Holy Family squad.

A fourth player, Pennridge grad Lydia Konstanzer, reached the mark the first time this season as a sophomore on the Sun/Ursinus squad, which got to .500.

Just two teams are now unbeaten, Forest Green, and the Royal Blue/Kutztown squad, which stayed perfect with an 83-45 win over the Pink/Penn State-Abington squad.

Pink might have one more point, in which case the Guru will update.

The combination of longtime commissioner David Kessler unable to send summaries this way due to an internet problem st his end and our co-author admitting he had some trouble reading his own handwriting compiling the recaps left that fact as the only thing in doubt and so hopefully you are all reading the overnight report in a timely manner.

Just one game behind the leaders tied for second are Maroon/USciences, which has won three straight, and Orange, falling off the unbeaten pile as referenced.

Next comes a four-way deadlock for fifth at 2-2 among Black/Phila. U, Sky Blue, Electric Green, and SkyBlue/Ursinus, and how they line up is in the tie-break section below.

Though out of the playoff fence for the moment but just one game behind, White and Pink sit at 1-3, followed by Red/Chestnut Hill and Purple/Delaware, who play each other a week from Thursday with one of them at least bound to hit the victory column by then.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday, just ahead of the holiday break, the featured action will be at 7 p.m. when Forest Green at 4-0 will meet Maroon at 3-1 on Court 2, while at the same time on Court 3 Royal Blue at 4-0 will meet Orange at 3-1.

One of the three nightcaps of the three sets of doubleheaders, played at 8:15 p.m. features Black at 2-2 facing White, trying to avoid further mayhem, now fighting from 1-3.

Everyone else will basically be playing to solidify themselves from falling further behind and at the same time attempt to move up.

Breaking Ties

As mentioned, no need to feel the pressure yet, though some teams’ windows are starting to narrow toward shut, but here is how the standings were affixed following Tuesday’s games.

Forest Green and Sky Blue are both unbeaten and Forest Green was placed first, having the best win of the two by beating Orange. Again, all this is for this time around in which not all things are equal.

In the two-way tie for third, Maroon has a better win beating Black than Orange, though both are 3-1.

In the four-way tie, multiples are placed in a mythical league of their own and while not everyone of the four played each other, Sky Blue was placed fifth at 1-0, then Electric Green and Black, though both 1-1 among the four, Electric Green is sixth off a head-to-head win over Black, which is seventh, because Sun/Ursinus is 1-2.

As for the ninth-place tie between White and Pink at 1-3, White is ninth off a best win, beating Black above, though the two in the tie have yet to meet. Purple and Red, both winless, have no determining factors for placement so alphabetical order ruled between the two for 11rth and 12th.

Before handing the recap-portion over to Bob Heller and then returning to the remaining data, the Guru wishes all a happy Fourth since he will be out of pocket Thursday night up at the Mohegan Sun at the WNBA game between the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm.

However, the Guru will still be on the case to assemble Bob’s file and his own summaries here on the overnight from Uncasville, near New London, and returning back down to the area on Friday.

And we may have some new news of note to be official heading into next Thursday so stay tuned.

Forest Green 61, Orange 48

Team Forest Green, with seven of their 11 players hailing from West Chester University turned up the defense and limited Team Orange (six players from holy Family University) to just 17 second half points as they remained undefeated with a 61-48 win.

WCU senior Mia Hopkins led all scorers with 20 points while recent University of Tampa grad out of Red Lion High School, Jennifer Horvatinovic added 13 points. 

Ithaca University junior and Episcopal Academy graduate Meghan Pickell paced Team Orange with 13 points while Liz Radley, a Bishop Eustace grad out of South Jersey scored 8 points.

Deadlocked at 15-15 at the end of one quarter, Hopkins and Horvatinovic keyed a 9-3 opening flourish in the second quarter as Forest Green jumped out to a 24-18 advantage.  Orange kept the score close never trailing by more than six until the final minute of the half when a forest Green forged ahead by eight.

Payton Spadaccino’s three point basket in the final seconds of the half closed the gap to five 36-31 at the break.

Orange knocked down a three-ball to open the third quarter, cutting the deficit to two points before Forest Green ran off five straight points to boost their lead to seven 41-34.

Baskets by Pickell and Courtney Truede, a Lycoming sophomore out of Washington Township in South Jersey, pulled the Orange squad within three at 41-38 but Forest Green closed out the quarter with an 8-2 flourish to lead by nine entering the final ten minutes of action.

Forest Green put the game out of reach with a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter with Hopkins scoring seven of the 12 points, taking a 61-42 lead.  Orange scored the final six points of the game to make the final margin 13 at 61-48.  Forest Green improves to 4-0 while Orange drops to 3-1.

 Sky Blue 77, White 70

Despite a 41-point effort from St. Joseph’s senior Amanda Fiorvanti, Team White suffered their third consecutive loss, falling to Team Sky Blue 77-70.

Erin Lindahl, an Emory sophomore and Germantown Academy graduate, led four Sky players in double figures with 16 points.

Taylor Dunn, a Catholic U sophomore out of Central Bucks South, added 14 points including three three-point field goals while Olivia Gorman, a Wesleyan junior besides being another Germantown Academy grad, and Saint Joseph’s incoming freshman Katie Jekot scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Jekot connected on two of her attempted three-balls. 

 Fiorvanti was the only player on Team White to reach double figures. However, Briana Winston, an incoming Kean freshman out of Harriton High; Michele McCaughern, a 2012 La Salle grad out of West Chester East; Mary Sheehan, an incoming Saint Joseph's frosh out of Cardinal O'Hara; and Nia Holland. A Lafayette junior out of the Shipley School, each scored six points.

The first 12 minutes of action saw a total of eight lead changes with white holding no more than a three-point lead for the remaining eight minutes of the half and taking a 32-30 lead at the break.

Baskets by Lindahl, Gorman and Dunn to open the third quarter produced the ninth lead change of the game and a 36-32 advantage for Team Sky Blue.

White kept Sky Blue within their sights and used a 13-8 advantage to take a 45-44 lead with just under five minutes left in the third quarter.  The two teams exchanged baskets and a one point lead until Jekot’s three-pointer put Sky up by two 49-47.

 After a bucket from Fiorvanti tied the game again at 49-49, Sky Blue went on a 13-0 run, capped by a Lindahl 3-ball to take a 62-49 lead with just under a minute to play in the quarter.  Fiorvanti’s traditional three-point play made it a ten point game 62-52 entering the final quarter.

Sky Blue’s lead oscillated between 10 and 12 points for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter before a bucket from White’s Sheehan at the 4:11 mark cut the gap to eight at 74-66.

A defensive hold and a basket by Fiorvanti made it a two possession game at 74-68 with just 2:24 left.  Sky Blue added three free throws on their next two possessions to lead 77-68.

Holland’s basket with 1:15 to go provided the final points for White, who fall to 1-3 on the season. Sky Blue evens their record at 2-2

Royal Blue 83, Pink 47

 The league’s only other undefeated team, Royal Blue, also known as Kutztown University had no problems dispatching Team Pink, also known as Penn-State Abington, 83-47.

Michaela Clay, a Saint Joseph’s junior in her 2017 summer league debut, led Royal with 16 points along with Karen Lapkiewicz, a Saint Basil grad who had four treys and scored 16.  

Kiki Ferguson from Norristown Area High added 14 points while Sierra Taylor of Camden Catholic chipped in 13.

Royal Blue’s 83 points are the most scored in a game by a team this season.

Shayna Rodriguez, an Archbishop Ryan grad, led Team Pink with 15 points, aided by five treys, while Sydney Barrow of Valley Forge Military Academy and Bartram High added ten.

A 12-1 run to close out the first quarter gave Royal Blue a 19-11 lead and erased a three-point Pink advantage.  The lead ballooned to 15 points by halftime at 40-25.

Royal scored the first seven points of the third quarter to boost their lead to 22, 47-25 and led 56-35 after three quarters.  Royal continued to dominate in the final period, pulling away for the huge win, 83-45 and remain undefeated at 4-0.  Pink falls to 1-3.

 Maroon 74, Black 50

Team Maroon, also known as University of the Sciences, won their third consecutive game after an opening night loss, defeating Team Black, 74-50 in a battle of two CACC rivals.

The game pitted the league leading offense of Team Black (72 points per game) against the league’s best defensive team;Maroon (allowing just 41.3 points per game).  Maroon improves to 3-1 on the season while Black falls to 2-2.

Maroon, placing four players in double figures and for the second consecutive week, made at least ten three-point field goals.  Alex Thomas led all scorers with 15 points.  Jessica Huber of North Penn High added 14 points (four three-pointers) while Laura Trisch of Archbishop Wood chipped in 11 (two three-pointers).  Irisa Ye, also of North Penn, added ten points.

Caitlyn Cunningham, a Mount St. Joseph’s grad on Philadelphia U., soon to be Jefferson U., was the lone player for Team black to reach double figures, notching 13 points. Ayoola Oguntuase and Beverly Kum out of St. Maria Goretti, each scored nine points, and Sabria Lytes, an incoming freshman from Truman High, scored eight points.

Black held early leads at 4-0 and 6-5 before Maroon closed out the first quarter with a 12-4 flourish to take the lead for good at 17-10.  Huber had a pair of three-balls in that 12-4 run.

Maroon pushed the lead to double digits with a 9-1 run midway through the second quarter and went into the break up by 14 38-24.  They extended their lead to 16 by the end of the third quarter and held Black to just nine fourth quarter points, outscoring their rivals 17-9 in the period to cruise to the 24 point win.

 Sun 70, Purple 50

Team Sun (Ursinus College) took control of the game early in the second quarter and cruised to a 70-50 win over Team Purple to even their record at 2-2.

Lydia Konstanzer led Team Sun with 23 points while Kristen Daley, a two-time defending Ivy champ Penn sophomore, added 16 while Deja Jackson, a Penn junior, and Paulina Boyer, a Bishop Eustace grad out of South Jersey, each scored nine points. 

Team Purple, also known as Delaware Valley University placed three in double figures, led by Ryan alum Brittany Wood’s 15 points.  Courtney Brown, a recent grad of East Stroudsburg and previously Council Rock South, added ten points while Lauren Moretti chipped in 11. Danielle SkedSkedzielewski, a Ryan grad at Del Val, scored nine.

Purple is winless with an 0-4 record.

Trailing by two at the end of one quarter, Sun used a 10-2 run to start the second to take a 22-16 lead, eventually doubling their advantage to 12 39-27 at halftime.  Team Sun increased their lead to 59-43 after three quarters before cruising to a 20-point win, 70-50.

Electric Green 77, Red 63

St. Joseph’s senior Chelsea Woods scored 30 points, aided by four 3-pointers, as Team electric Green cruised to their second win of the season, 77-63 over Team Red (Chestnut Hill College).

Electric Green evens their record a 2-2 while Team Red remains winless at 0-4

Woods’ Hawks senior teammate Jaryn Garner out of Germantown Academy joined her in double figures for the electric Green squad, notching 12 points.  Jessica Gerber, a Kenyon junior out of Council Rock North, and Carley Hamilton, a Muhlenberg junior out of Marple Newton, each scored eight points.

Natalie Kuckowski, a Lafayette freshman and St. Basil grad, led Team Red with 13 points while Avery Marz, a Saint Joseph’s senior out of Wilson High, added 11. Vicki Tumasz, a North Penn grad at Chestnut Hill, just missed scoring double digits with nine points.

The Electric Green squad used a 12-3 flourish late in the first quarter to turn a three-point lead into a double digit one at 24-10

Team Red scored the final five  points of the first quarter and Cassie Sebold’s bucket to open the second made it seven straight for the Red squad, cutting the lead to 24-17.  Buckets by Woods and Garner pushed the lead back up to double digits where it remained the rest of the period.

Trailing by 12 at the break, Team Red opened the third quarter with a 7-4 run to shave the deficit to single digits at 42-33.  Electric Green finished the quarter on an 11-7 run to lead by 15, 55-40 entering the final period.

Woods and Garner hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 19.  Team Red made one last push, producing a 17-5 run to close within nine, 66-57 with 3:48 left.

It was as close as the Red squad would get as Electric Green pulled away as the game wore down, finishing on an 11-6 flourish to earn the 77-63 win.

WNBA Report: Connecticut Win Streak At Five After Blunting New York Rally

NEW YORK – Pride Night brought an array of rainbow combinations to the New York Liberty’s WNBA game in Madison Square Garden Friday night but when the final buzzer sounded after surviving a fierce rally by the home team, it was the Connecticut Sun that continued to shine with a 94-89 triumph.

It was the Sun’s first win in New York in three seasons dating back to June 13, 2014.

Suddenly, the heartbreaking finishes earlier last month on the front part of the schedule have dissipated and despite being decimated by a string of injuries it’s like the old days of the franchise when playoff qualification was an annual event to pair the excitement with what’s created in the winter an hour away during the women’s collegiate competition when powerful UConn takes the floor.

“You have to steal road wins if you’re going to be a playoff team,” said second-year coach Curt Miller after the Sun (6-5) won its fifth straight overall and sixth of seven along with two straight over New York and a back-to-back road pairing of taking Minnesota off the unbeaten column and then coming back from a week’s rest to beat the Liberty here.

“We want to try to get in the playoffs. That’s a goal this team hasn’t done. So you have to try to steal a road game here and there,” Miller explained. “So this is a huge win for us and the Minnesota win. Now we know we can play against the best in this league on the road. And that’s going to be huge for this young team.”

The Sun last appeared in the postseason in 2012.

The Sun goes next to Dallas Sunday to play the Wings before coming home next Tuesday and Thursday for a pair against the defending champion Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm.

This one built to the point that Connecticut seemed on the way to replicating its 96-76 win against the Liberty (7-5) up at home at Mohegan on June 14. The Sun captured the first period, 26-18, outscored New York the next 20-14 for a 46-32 halftime advantage.

It got to wipeout dimensions when the visitors went up 21 at 70-49 with 1:59 left in the third before New York began to stir.

Exciting the crowd of 10,240, the Liberty then went on a 37-16 blast across the remainder of the third and into the fourth periods and caught the Sun at 86-86 on Shavonte Zellous’ layup off a Tina Charles offensive rebound with 1:02 left in regulation.

But unlike last month’s setbacks, Connecticut found a way and South Florida grad Courtney Williams broke the deadlock with a pull-up jumper from 10 feet with 54.3 left to play.

Rutgers grad Epiphanny Prince, playing in her first game along with several other WNBA stars who had a six-game leave to play overseas, missed a shot and Williams grabbed the rebound followed by Duke grad and WNBA veteran Jasmine Thomas nailing a 26-foot trey to make it 91-86 with 24.4 left.

Charles, the former UConn great, missed a shot and then former Tennessee star Shekinna Stricklen got the ball back to Connecticut and she ended up on the line shooting 1-2.

Zellous hit a trey with 4.9 left but Jonquel Jones, a former George Washington star, hit two foul shots to send the Sun merrily on their way to Texas.

“You’ve got to give New York tons of credit,” Miller said. “What an unbelievable fourth quarter. I felt like they scored on every single possession.

“But, we just talked about, if we could get a couple of stops and get a basket in transition or we were going to have our own run – and our kids stuck together.”

Connecticut was without former UConn star Morgan Tuck, who is out with a knee injury, while former Maryland great Lynetta Kizer is sidelined with back problems. Former Texas A&M star Danielle Adams and former Minnesota star Rachel Banham did not get into the game for the Sun.

Jasmine Thomas had career-high 23 points,  following up her 20 points scoring in the win at Minnesota, while Jones had 21, Williams scored 14, Stricklen had 13, and former Maryland star Alyssa Thomas scored 12 to put all five starters into double figures while off the bench and just missing was former Penn State star Alex Bentley, who had also been overseas, and returned to score nine points in 11:12 minutes of action.

“What is common across the board is the amount of people we’re putting in double figures,” Miller said of the Sun’s hot run that could be seven straight had not they coughed up a big lead on their last Washington visit.

“We’re not playing through one or two people. We’re distributing it and they’re playing together. I like it when you have five players on the floor hunting for shots within your offense. I think you’re hard to guard and we’re getting that now.”

Jones noted, “I think we’ve done a good job growing as a team. I think we believe in each other. We’ve won enough games to know, no matter what kind of situation that we’re in, we’re able to win it.

“I think we made it hard in the fourth quarter when we didn’t get enough stops but I think our maturity definitely pulled us through that one.”

Charles had 20 points and 11 rebounds for New York, while Zellous had 18, former Connecticut star Bria Hartley, who previous played in Washington, had 13, as did Sugar Rodgers, while Prince had 13 off the bench.

The Liberty turned the ball over 16 times in getting outscored 28-12 in points off turnovers.

The two Connecticut games to date are the only ones that New York trailed by 15 in each opening half.

The Sun were big on the offensive glass, outscoring the home team 21-4 on second chance points, dropping to New York to 1-4 when being outscored in that category.

Had New York won it would have been the largest comeback leading to a win in franchise history, which is now 21 seasons. The Liberty wiped out a 20-point lead at Washington on August 21, 2003 to go on to win in  what is now named the Verizon Center in the nation’s capital by a score of 65-60.

The Liberty start a four-game road trip there next Thursday, being off until then. That means that Friday night’s game here is the only one New York will have played over a 13-game span. New York entered the contest coming out of a comeback win 102-93 in overtime at Dallas a week ago.

“Give Connecticut credit,” New York coach Bill Laimbeer said afterwards. “They played a very strong game all along. But I think in Connecticut we didn’t show.

“Here, we played a lot harder but the same problems that we experienced in the past is that we have to value the basketball more. Giving up 28 points off turnovers and giving up 21 points on the offensive rebounds was our undoing.”

Charles gave kudos to Jones, a second-year player.

“Connecticut is really good right now, so kudos to them, especially Jonquel Jones. She is setting the tone for the team, at her young age being confident and aggressive. She is tough but we have to just keep getting better. We have days off before Washington so we have to take advantage of that.”        

Philly Women's Summer Basketball League: Two Last-Second Upsets Keep Standings Tight

HATBORO, Pa. – It’s still two weeks away until the traditional fireworks are fired in the night’s sky on Fourth of July but there was quite a display Tuesday with two startling upsets on closing-seconds baskets while two other games on the six-game card were competitive in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA-Certified Summer Basketball League.

Sierra Taylor nailed a three-ball at the buzzer to lift Royal Blue, also known as Kutztown, to a 65-64 win over Team White, while Chelsea Woods’ layup with 6.5 seconds remaining in regulation snapped a 57-57 tie to give previously winless Electric Green a win over previous unbeaten Black, also known as the Philadelphia U. group.

The other two tightly-fought games saw Forest Green stay unbeaten at 3-0 with Orange, also known as Holy Family, and Royal Blue by gaining a 55-52 win over Red, also known as Chestnut Hill, while Sky Blue edged Sun, also known as Ursinus College, 51-46.

Orange cruised over Pink, also known as Penn State-Abington, 60-44, while Maroon, also known as USciences, routed Purple, also known as Delaware Valley, 80-36, keeping the Devils as the top defensive squad in the league in the action at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, near Willow Grove.

Unlike Tuesday when seven players hit the Guru’s nightly individual plateau citing of 20 or more points, just three achieved the mark on Thursday, two being the Saint Joseph’s senior duo of Chelsea Woods and Amanda Fioravanti.

Woods, the Cheltenham High grad who dominated the league last summer, reached 26 points, second best for the league during the season, in scoring her game-winner, while Fioravanti on White had the night’s top performance at 27 points, which also tied the season mark to date set opening night by Penn sophomore Kendall Grasela, a Germantown Academy grad on Sky Blue.

Black’s Alynna Williams, a Plymouth-Whitemarsh product who is a sophomore this fall at Philadelphia U., scored 20 points as the other top performer. Scoring is the only stat kept by the various stat crews at the tables.

Incidentally, your Guru will be in New York Friday night for a WNBA Eastern showdown in Madison Square Garden and the host Connecticut Sun, who on Thursday cut Temple recent grad Feyonda Fitzgerald after a short stay when she was picked up to fill a roster slot.

Fitzgerald was taken in the second round of April’s draft by the Indiana Fever but let go when the team made its final cut prior to opening night last month.

All that said, here is Bob Heller with the complete breakdown how everything happened, and then your Guru will be back underneath the recaps looking at Tuesday’s action, the standings, and how standings order was determined for now.

Royal Blue 65, White 64

Sierra Taylor’s three point shot at the buzzer capped off a wild fourth quarter as Team Royal Blue (Kutztown University) pulled off a 65-64 upset win over Team White to remain undefeated at 3-0.

Taylor’s winning 3-ball came on a second chance as Kiki Ferguson’s attempt was blocked with about two seconds left…Ferguson, a Norristown Area High grad, recovered the loose ball and passed out to Taylor, a product of Camden Catholic in South Jersey, who let it fly from the right corner as the buzzer was sounding.

Taylor finished the game with a team-high 19 points.  Gabbi Wright, a Cheltenham grad, added 11 points while Karen Lapkiewicz, a Saint Basil grad, chipped in ten.

Royal Blue led by just three points at the start of the fourth quarter and scored the first nine points of the period to boost their lead to 12 points 55-43.

White’s Michele McCaughern (12 points) then started a 9-0 run with a short jumper at the 6:49 mark.  Amanda Fiorvanti’s (team high 27-points) two free throws with 4:10 left capped the run and closed the gap to three 55-52.

The two teams exchanged baskets  until Ferguson’s free throw with 1:35 left put Royal Blue up by five 60-55.  Fiorvanti’s bucket made the score 60-57.   Nia Holland’s three-point basket with 31.7 seconds left brought White back within one at 61-60.

Taylor made the first of two free throws to give Royal a two-point lead before Holland (13 points) tied the game at 62-all with 19.5 seconds left  and was fouled.  The Lafayette junior out of the Shipley School missed the free throw but grabbed her own rebound, passed it to Ashley Wood underneath for a layup that gave White a 64-62 lead with 13.5 seconds left and setting the scenario for the final bucket.

Team White had led throughout most of the first two quarters and held a 35-32 lead at halftime. The two teams battled in the third quarter, with the lead changing hands five times before Royal scored on their final two possessions to take the three point lead going into the final quarter.

Electric Green 59, Black 57 

 On the adjacent court, another close battle was being waged as undefeated Team Black took on winless Team Electric Green.

This game also came down to a final shot as Chelsea Woods’ layup with 6.5 seconds left carried Electric Green to a 57-57 upset of Team Black (Philadelphia University).

Woods led all scorers in the game with 26 points while Samantha Stipa, a Lafayette senior out of Spring-Ford, added 15.  Alynna Williams led Black with 20 points while Caitlyn Cunningham of Mount St. Joseph’s had 17 and Beverly Kum of St. Maria Goretti added 12.

Electric Green led by just one point heading into the final period and opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 flourish paced by Stipa and Woods to take a 53-44 lead.

Williams then ignited a 9-2 run for Team Black with a 3-ball that cut the lead to two at 55-53 with 3:04 left.   A free throw by Woods with 1:25 left followed by a Cunningham basket made it a one-point game 56-55.

Woods added another free throw with just under a minute to go before Black’s Ayoona Oguntuase tied it at 57-57 with a layup.

Black made a defensive stop but then turned the ball over when Electric Green force a held ball and took over on the alternating possession, with 23 seconds left.  

Electric Green made a few passes and got the ball on the baseline to Woods who drove to the basket in traffic and made the last of her 26 points to provide Electric Green with the final margin of victory 59-57.

Team Black jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before Electric Green battled back starting a 10-0 run as the first quarter came to a close and finishing it off in the second stanza to take 1 24-16 lead before Black whittled the difference to three 32-29 at the break.

Electric Green scored the first five points of the third quarter to again pull ahead by eight 37-29 before Black again closed the gap with a 13-6 flourish to end the period trailing by one, 43-42.

 Forest Green 55, Red 52

Team Forest Green (West Chester University) remained undefeated at 3-0, holding off a tenacious Team Red (Chestnut Hill College) squad, 55-52.

Mia Hopkins scored four of her game-high 15 points in the final 30 seconds to secure the win for the Forest Green squad.  She finished the game with 15 points.  Teammate Jennifer Horvatinovic, a recent Tampa grad, also had 15 points as did Team Red’s Natalie Kucowski, a Lafayette incoming freshman out of Saint Basil.  Devon Boehm, a Souderton grad, added 11 points for the Red squad in the losing effort.

The Forest Green squad, after rallying from eight points down took an eight point lead of their own in the third quarter before the Red team battled back to make it a two point game entering the final ten minutes of action.

 Forest Green led throughout the fourth quarter but never by more than six points as the Red team hung around.  Gabby Troisi’s basket with 2:44 left in the game put Forest Green up 49-43 before a 6-2 mini-run, capped by a Kaitlyn Dougherty layup made it a one possession game at 51-49 with just under 40 seconds remaining.

Team Red had a chance to tie it but turned the ball over with 31.5 seconds left.  Hopkins was fouled and made both free throws, then added a breakaway layup following a Red team miss with 5.8 seconds left to give her team a 55-49 lead.

 Kristin Hamill’s three-pointer for Team Red with 1.4 seconds provided the final points for the 55-52 win.

A 12-0 flourish in the second quarter had given Red the largest lead by either team in the game at 24-14.

 Forest Green countered with a 9-0 effort, fueled by Hopkins and Troisi to close the gap to one at 24-23 at halftime.

As the third quarter commenced Forest Green used an 11-2 uprising to retake the lead and forge ahead by eight 34-26.

 Kucowski then scored seven of the Red team’s next nine points as part of a 9-3 run to close out the third quarter cutting Forest Green’s lead to two 37-35.

Sky Blue 51, Sun 46 

Team Sky Blue held Team Sun (Ursinus College) scoreless over the final 3:04 as they hung on to earn their first win of the season, 51-46.

 Only four players scored points for the victors but all four reached double figures, led by the duo of Katie Jekot, a Saint Joseph’s incoming freshman, and Lauren Killion, an Albright sophomore out of Lower Moreland, who scored 14 points apiece.

Taylor Dunn, a Catholic U. sophomore out of Central Bucks South, added 13 while Erin Lindahl, an Emory sophomore out of Germantown Academy, chipped in ten.  Lydia Konstanzer, a Pennridge grad, led Team Sun with 14 points.

Dunn scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to give Sky Blue a ten point lead, 44-34 before Sun ran off seven straight points, capped with a Rachel Guy triple to pull within three at 44-41.

 After both teams exchanged baskets, Jekot and Dunn scored back-to-back to boost Sky Blue’s lead to eight 51-43 with just under four minutes remaining.

Marisa DiLeo sank a three pointer with 3:04 left that proved to be the final points for either team, making the score 51-46.

Team Sun held the lead throughout the first quarter and held a four point lead early in the second quarter when Sky Blue went on an 8-2 spurt to take a 19-17 lead they would not relinquish, forcing Team Sun to play from behind the rest of the way.

Maroon 80, Purple 36 

The best defensive team in the league, held their opponent under 40 points for the second consecutive night as Team Maroon (USciences) cruised to an 80-36 over Team Purple (Delaware Valley University).  In the three games this season, Team Maroon’s opponents have scored just 125 total points, an average of 41.6 per game.

Maroon made good use of the long ball, sinking a total of 11 three-point field goals, spreading the wealth amongst five different players.

 Incoming USciences freshman Jessica Huber, a North Penn grad, and rising junior Alex Thomas led Maroon with14 points apiece while rising senior Colleen Walsh out of the Shipley School added 13.

Ashley Smink, a product of Archbishop Ryan, led Team Purple with 10 points.  Courtney Brown, a recent East Stroudsburg grad out of Council Rock South, and Ryan Fiascki, a 2015 ESU grad out of Archbishop Carsroll, added seven and six points respectively.

The Maroon squad led this game wire-to-wire, with Laura Trisch, an Archbishop Wood grad, starting the three-point barrage on her first shot, en route to an early 16-2 lead.

 A 22-9 first quarter lead expanded to 34-20 by halftime and 50-30 by the end of the third quarter.  Maroon closed the game out with a 30-6 fourth quarter effort.   Their 44-point margin of victory is the largest so far in the league this season.

Orange 60, Pink 44

Team Orange (Holy Family University) remained amongst the undefeated teams as they led wire-to-wire, defeating Team Pink (Penn State Abington) 60-44.   Meghan Pickell, an Ithaca junior out of Episcopal Academy, and Katie O’Hare, a Bayard Rustin grad, notched 15 points apiece for the victors while Jada Smith out of Merion Mercy Academy, added 14.

 Shayna Rodriguez, an Archbishop Ryan grad, led Team Pink with 14 points while Samantha Hicks, a Bryn Athyn junior out of Ryan, added 12.

Orange scored the first six points of the game and forged ahead 14-9after the first quarter.

The Orange squad increased their lead to 12 by halftime 32-20 and 21 by the end of the third quarter, 43-22.

The two teams combined for just one basket over the final eight minutes of the third quarter as Orange outscored Oink 11-2 in the period.

In the fourth quarter, Pink cut the lead to 18 on two occasions early in the period,  but would come no closer than the final score, 60-44 the rest of the way.

 Looking Ahead

Tuesday night’s action entering the second full week on the 11-date action of three double headers each in the regular season that will determine the top eight seeds for the playoffs has a head-to-head meeting with the fourth-place deadlocked teams as CACC rivals Maroon (2-1) also known as USciences mets Black (2-1) also known as Philadelphia U, but soon to be known as Jefferson U, at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1.

There will be at least one less unbeaten team at the end of the night as Orange (3-0), also known as the Holy Family group,  meets Forest Green (3-0), also known as West Chester, on Court 2 at 7 p.m.

Royal Blue (3-0), also known as Kutztown U. will be looking to be tied for first with the winner of the Forest Green/Orange game by beating the Pink (1-2) or Penn State-Abington group at 8:15 p.m. on Court 3.

Should an upset occur then the Forest Green/Orange winner for the moment will be alone in first and quickly the last unbeaten team in the early phase of the summer schedule.

Everyone else will be looking to avoid further slippage.

Breaking Ties

As you know from the past here the last item below is the tracker to later determine the eight playoff qualifiers and seed positions. At the portion of the season when enough significant games to determine head-to-head and best wins or least worst losses are played, the standings will be more firm.

But for what has been played through the first three nights there is enough data for a makeshift order in the standings. The first three slots going to the unbeaten teams are simply listed alphabetically while the same alphabetical order was assigned to the fourth place deadlocked of Black and Maroon.

When Black and Maroon meet on Tuesday, the result will send the winner into a tie for third or second depending on the outcome of the unbeaten teams while the Black/Maroon loser will get entangled with teams emerging from wins in the five-way tie for sixth.

At the moment in that deadlock Electric Green’s upset of Black places itself in sixth with the best win, White with a previous win over Maroon, places it in seventh though it is more through an alphabetical assignment since both teams have equal value victories.

Pink then lands in eighth while Sky Blue’s head-to-head win over Sun Thursday slots them in the ninth and tenth slots, technically below playoff qualifying but moot right now since more data will offer more relevancy in another week or two.

And alphabetical listing gets the order of the two-team 11th-place deadlock of which both are the only squads still seeking a win.
