Philly WBB Summer League: Radley Carries Sky Blue/Holy Family to Title Over Defending Champs Maroon/USciences
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller
HATBORO, Pa. — New Holy Family coach and former Tigers star Bernadette Laukaitis has yet to take the sidelines in game action but she already has an impressive title contingent since her hire last spring off Ivy co-champion Penn coach Mike McLaughlin’s staff.
Under the designation as Team Sky Blue, the third seed, the D2-Tigers in a gritty tightly-fought affair knocked off the defending champion Maroon squad, the fourth-seed, also known as D2-USciences 55-50 to capture the 2019 edition of the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball League Tuesday night here at Kelly Bolish Gym home of the AAU Renegades.
Senior Elizabeth Radley out of Bishop Eustace hit a three-ball with 8.9 seconds left in regulation to break a 50-50 tie and become the only player to hit the nightly 20 points or more citation to finish with 21 points.
She hit a pair of foul shots on an ensuing possesion after her trey to clinch the win.
It’s a first for Holy Family, who went 7-2 on the nine-game schedule from mid-June till late July, since the league moved in 2010 from Northeast High, not far from the Tigers’ campus, to the current site.
It also made it a sweep of the Devils, who also went 7-2, counting the earlier contest, a 56-55 win that saw Sky Blue rally from 13 down in the third quarter and nine at the start of the fourth.
That win as a tie-break landed the Tigers the third seed and kept them out of the path of top-seeded Team Black, also known as D2-Jefferson, which fell to USciences narrowly on July 9 and then lost again Thursday night in overtime in the semifinals.
In both games mediocre shooting, especially at the foul line Tuesday, cost the Devils at the hands of the Tigers.
In Thursday’s semifinal doubleheader Sky Blue avenged a loss to second-seeded Red, the combo of primarily D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg, to stay alive.
Longtime commissioner David Kessler said afterwards Tuesday he could not remember when the No. 1 seed had not made it to the title round.
A year ago Black went unbeaten to the championship night before losing losing to Maroon, whose only loss had been to the Rams.
USciences was playing in its fifth championship.
“I’m proud of them,” said Laukaitis, who watched the game from the spectator section as did Devils coach Jackie Hartzell, who just returned from vacation.
So should be former Holy Family coach and former Temple star Melissa Dunne, who was let go after last season, but is now an aide on Saint Joseph’s coach Cindy Griffin’s staff and is responsible for the Tigers roster that took the floor here Tuesday.
Just as last summer’s result was also an omen to the ongoing winter rivalry between USciences and Jefferson in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, so should Tuesday’s game serve similarly, considering Holy Family also competes in the CACC.
The Devils and Rams both made it to Top 10 weekly rankings last season.
Bob has all the details of the game in a bit.
Meanwhile two things to take note looking ahead.
In the offseason the commissioner will be looking for the first time for sponsorships in an effort to reduce registration costs and perhaps get the 10 team operation the past two summers back up to 12 or 13 teams.
Secondly, because only three D-1 players applied, one of which never made it to the floor due to some physical problems, the commissioner in an effort to reduce costs and avoid problems of bureaucracy may not seek NCAA certification.
Certainly, the league showed much parity despite the lack of what used to be a large influx from local Big 5 schools.
Of course the reasons for the drop were many from geography, the numbers who take summer classes conflicting with Tuesday and Thursday game nights, those who take jobs, and of course out-of-town enrollees who go home in the interim.
But the commissioner is known as a kind person, so this is not yet a final decision should a sudden uptick of interest from the D-1 crowd emerge.
Now, here’s Bob with the title action:
Championship: #3 Sky Blue 55, #4 Maroon 50
The Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League crowned a new champion Tuesday night as #3 seed Team Sky Blue (aka D2 Holy Family University) handed defending league champion and #4 seed Team Maroon (aka D2 USciences) a 55-50 loss in the league championship game Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym in Hatboro, Pa.
The Maroon (USciences) squad was making their fifth consecutive appearance in the championship game while Sky Blue (Holy Family) was making their first since the league moved to its current Hatboro location.
Sky’s Liz Radley sank a three-point basket with 8.9 seconds left, breaking a 50-50 tie en route to her team’s first championship.
Radley was the only player on both sides to reach double figures, scoring seven points in the final 1:16 to finish with 21 on the night.
Angelai Hayes and Casey Schweitzer added nine points apiece to bolster the Sky Blue offense.
Jordan Vitelli led Maroon with nine points while Kendall Keyes and Irisa Ye added eight points apiece.
The Sky Blue squad was successful in three aspects of the game that the Maroon squad usually is the better team: three-point shooting, defense and free throws.
Sky’s defense held Maroon to just three three-point field goals with the third one coming in the final seconds.
Meanwhile their offense connected on ten three point shots, accounting for 30 of their 55 points.
Sky also shot 9-16 from the free throw line while Maroon was uncharacteristically off from the charity stripe, making just five of 15 shots.
Radley’s basket midway through the fourth quarter broke a 39-39 tie and gave Sky a slim two point lead.
It also marked the 16th lead change of the contest.
Maroon went on to tie the game three more times before coming up short at the final buzzer.
Irisa Ye’s layup with 1:02 left tied the game at 47-47.
Dana Dockery put Sky back on top with two free throws and Radley added another with 25.7 seconds left to give Sky a 50-47 lead.
Following a Maroon time out, Jess Huber sank a long three-pointer, her only long field goal of the game to tie the score for the eight time at 50-50 and set the stage for the final points.
Sky looked to work the ball inside but found Radley just beyond the arc on the left side for an opener jumper and the eventual game winner.
This time Maroon couldn’t convert and Radley added two more free throws with 0.4 left on the clock to seal the win.
The five point margin was the largest lead of the game for either team.
Maroon led by three twice during the game, both in the first quarter while Sky Blue led by no more than three on six occasions.
