Philly Women's Summer League: Late Scores in Separate Games Drop Maroon and Boost Forest Green to Tie At The Top

By Mel Greenberg (@womhoopsguru)

HATBORO, Pa. – Two dramatic finishes involving the frontrunners of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA-Certified Summer Basketball League Thursday night brought the top of the standings to a dead heat, while Team Electric Green’s 95-47 win over Team Pink, also known as Penn State-Abington, enabled the winners to earn a playoff bid heading to Tuesday night’s final of the 11-game schedule of the regular season.

In all there are now six of the eight slots filled for the postseason, which opens with quarterfinals next Thursday at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, and continues the following Tuesday (Aug. 1) and Thursday (Aug. 3) with semifinals and the championship.

Other results Thursday created a whole series of ties through the upper part of the standings, though the grouping is no longer in bunches. Team White eliminated Team Red, also known as Chestnut Hill, with a 65-53 win, leaving essentially three contenders: Team Orange, also known as Holy Family; Team Sun, also known as Ursinus; and Sky Blue for the final two playoff slots.

In the two attention-getting outcomes, No. 1 Team Maroon, also known as USciences, had a long winning streak snapped when Veronica Christ, an incoming Elizabethtown freshman from Delaware Valley Regional, nailed a shot with 23 seconds left in regulation to put Team Royal Blue, also known as Kutztown, in front and add one more point for a 57-54 win.

On the same Court 2 of the three-courts venue, Forest Green, also known as West Chester, in the second game got two foul shots from Mia Hopkins to make it a three-point lead with 31 seconds left, enough to withstand Team Black, also known as Thomas Jefferson U., formerly Philadelphia U., which got a shot from Jess Kaminski to make the final score 70-69 and allow Forest Green to tie Maroon for first.

Maroon, off a thrilling double overtime win over Forest Green earlier this summer, has the tiebreaker if both teams stay deadlocked when the final horn sounds Tuesday night.

Maroon meets Team Sun, the Ursinus bunch, at 7 p.m. on Court 2. Sun lost a chance to enhance their postseason outlook losing to Team Orange 95-47 allowing the winners to stay in the hunt.

And back near the top, things are not as simply as a two-team affair, because just a game behind Team White and Team Royal Blue are tied and there could be a four-team tie at the end.

A game behind the third-place occupants, Electric Green, off its win, and Black, off the loss, are tied for fifth, and then Sun and Orange are tied for seventh at 5-5 with Sky Blue, next at 4-6.

Sky Blue was idle, having picked up a forfeit win several weeks ago, and also having beaten Purple, in a game originally scheduled for Thursday night, but played that night on July 6.

The Guru and commissioner’s standings are now back in compatibility since the Guru had withheld Sky and Purple’s forfeit wins to keep the number of nightly games even for several weeks until being able to slot the wins into the standings Thursday.

Down below, your Guru will go through a bunch of tie-breaking scenarios, though not all, to be done if necessary after the final standings are completed.

Current seed positions will also be explained.

Besides the standings race, several individual performances marked the 20 points-or-more nightly standard, all of them some of the better ones among the 12 teams to date.

Though Chelsea Woods, the Saint Joseph’s senior who has been hitting the mark consistently for Electric Green, who was unable to attend Thursday, the slack was picked by Hannah Fox, an Amherst sophomore out of Penn Charter, who scored 30 points.

Fox was newly returned from helping USA gain a gold medal in the recent Maccabiah Games in Israel. She noted the international line for three-pointers is much longer, which may be why she enjoyed pouring down six three-balls here Thursday.

Penn sophomore Kristen Daley of Team Sun matched Maroon’s Jess Huber’s earlier season 33 points, in the loss to Orange, the second best night overall behind Saint Joseph’s Amanda Fioravanti, who had a league-best 41 points in a game last month early on the schedule.

In the same game, Liz Radley, a Holy Family sophomore on Team Orange out of South Jersey’s Bishop Eustace, had 29 points Thursday.

Orange’s Megan Pickell, an Ithaca junior out of Episcopal Academy, almost hit the mark, scoring 19 in the win over Sun.

In Forest Green’s win Mia Hopkins added another 20 plus performance, scoring 26 by the West Chester senior from upstate Pennsylvania.

Incidentally, the recaps will be a little slimmer for the second night with Bob Heller on assignment elsewhere this week but he will be back in the flow on Tuesday for the remainder of the schedule.

Breaking the Ties

In the terms of the running standings, it is easier to bring everyone up to date on the current situation heading into Tuesday night.

As mentioned, Maroon and Forest Green are tied for first at 9-2 and Maroon owns the one seed for now off the double overtime win over Forest Green.

Purple and White are in third at 7-3 and Royal Blue had beaten White when the traditional power was struggling early in the season so it holds the third seed with White fourth, though that could change.

In fifth are Electric Green (6-4) and Black (6-4) and Electric Green’s previous win over Black lands fifth with Black, of course, in sixth.

Tied for seventh, Orange’s Thursday win over Sun to bring both teams to 5-5 puts the Holy Family group in seventh followed by Sun.

Just a game behind in ninth but very much alive, Sky Blue (4-6) is just behind Orange and Sun while eliminated but in no deadlock is Red (2-8) in 10th. Tied at 11th is Pink and Purple (Delaware Valley), both already eliminated but Pink’s win over Purple lands 11th.

Looking Ahead to Games and Scenarios

Ok, as to the key games Tuesday, Orange will be a tough underdog to Electric Green at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2, after Sky Blue meets Pink at 7, going into the game as a strong favorite.

Maroon plays Sun at 7 followed by Forest Green meeting Royal Blue at 8:15 on Court 3, a game that could scramble much depending on the outcome.

Tie-Break Potential in Final Standings

The fact Royal Blue plays Forest Green could tighten things, especially if Maroon gets upset.

Obviously if Black or Forest Green win without the other, the winner gets the top seed.

In a Three-Way tie for first at 8-3 among Maroon, Forest Green, and Royal Blue, the West Chester/Royal Blue squad would be 2-0 to get the top seed and then Maroon, with a win over Forest Green, would be second, followed by Forest Green.

If Forest wins and Maroon loses with a White win, causing a second-place tie, White gets second ahead of Maroon off an early season triumph.

A four-way first place tie at 8-3 among Forest Green, Black, Royal Blue and White, then Royal Blue at 3-0 would be the top seed, the other three would be 1-1 in their remaining group and how that gets determined must wait until the final standings to see what would qualify for best win among the remaining threesome.

A tie of White, Royal Blue and Electric Green yields Royal Blue at 2-0 to be the first to get get slotted, followed by whichever team had beaten the other among White and Royal Blue.

At the bottom fighting for two of the remaining slots among three teams, a three-way knot yields Sky Blue, which is 2-0 over the two other teams, of which the head-to-head winner lands the eighth spot.

Thursday’s Recaps

Team Orange 84, Team Sun 63

A key win for Orange and tough loss for Sun concerning the playoffs. As mentioned, Orange’s Liz Radley paced the Holy Family crowd with 29, followed by Morgan Pickell’s 19 points, aided by a trio of 3-balls.

Kristen Daley’s 33 for Sun was also helped by three threes while Marisa Marano, a Villa Jos. Marie grad at Ursinus, scored nine points and Marisa DiLeo scored eight.

Team White 65, Team Red 53

Mary Sheehan, an incoming Saint Joseph’s freshman out of Cardinal O’Hara, led the winners with 14 points, Shira Newman, a 2013 Millersville grad out of Upper Dublin, had 12 points, all courtesy of four three-pointers, while Amanda Fioravanti scored 12, and Ashley Wood, a 2013 Kutztown grad out of Spring-Ford and daughter of Team White coach Keith Wood, scored 10.

Vicky Tumasz, a North Penn grad at Chestnut Hill, had 12 points, also all obtained from beyond the arc, while Natalie Kucowski, an incoming Lafayette freshman out of Saint Basil, had seven points, Courtney Webster, a LeMoyne senior from Central Bucks East, scored six as did Bianca Picardo, a recent 2017 NYU grad out of Souderton, and Saint Joseph’s senior Avery Marz.

Team Electric Green 95, Team Pink 47

Even without Chelsea Wood in the house, Electric Green was still powerful becoming the sixth team to earn a playoff berth after the first five qualifiers became eligible following Tuesday’s games.

Hannah Fox, as mentioned, stepped off the USA Maccabiah squad after winning a Gold Medal in Israel, and scored 30, sharpshooting six three-pointers, Sammy Stipa, , a Lafayette senior out of Spring-Ford, scored 14, Jessica Gerber a Kenyon junior out of Council Rock North, scored 13 aided by three 3-balls, and Emily Walls, a Moravian junior out of Bayard Rustin, scored 12.

Symantha Marrero, a Penn State Abington senior out of Central High, had 16 points for Pink, shooting 9-for-10 from the line, while Shayna Rodriguez, a junior out of Archbishop Ryan, had 14 points, aided by four three-pointers, and Grace Dewey, a senior, had nine points, while Brittany Keyes out of Archbishop Wood, scored eight.

Team Royal Blue 57, Team Maroon 54

Getting into the mix near the top with a chance to be the number one seed, the Kutztown dominated squad was led by Sierra Taylor, a sophomore out of Camden Catholic, with 14 points, Karen Lapkiewicz, another sophomore, but out of Saint Basil, scored 14 points, and Michaela Clay, a Saint Joseph’s junior, scored 13 points.

Since Maroon’s previous win on Tuesday it had been announced the Devils’ GPA got them a 17th on the academic Division II top 25 announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

In the loss, Alex Thomas, scored 15 points, Laura Trisch, out of Archbishop Wood, scored 14 points, Jess Huber, out of North Penn, scored nine, as did Colleen Walsh, who got all her nine points off of three three pointers fired by the Shipley School graduate.

Team Forest Green 70, Team Black 69

As mentioned Mia Hopkins had 26 to get the West Chester bunch into the first place tie, while Siani McNeil, a Delco Christian grad, had 12, ahead of nine from Jen Horvatinovic, a 2017 Tampa grad, and eight from Katie Feehery, a Scranton senior out of Cardinal I’Hara.

Alynna Williams, a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson U on Team Black out of Plymouth Whitemarsh, scored 16 points, Caitlyn Cunningham, a Rams sophomore out of Mt. St. Joseph’s, scored 13, and Sabria Lytes, an incoming Rams freshman out of Truman High, scored 10 points.
