Philly Women's Summer League: Maroon and Forest Green Head Five Teams Clinching Playoff Spots

By Mel Greenberg (@womhoopsguru)

HATBORO, Pa. – Five teams clinched playoff berths Tuesday night with two games left in the regular season led by the recent on-going 1-2 punch of Maroon, also known as USciences, and Forest Green, also known as West Chester in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Certified Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Both frontrunners had easy games with Team Maroon topping Team Orange, also known as Holy Family, 91-55, while Team Forest Green took a lopsided 75-42 win over Team Pink, also known as Penn State-Abington.

Team Maroon’s lone loss was to Team White, which could factor if ties have to be broken for seed positions, while Forest Green’s two setbacks were to Team Maroon, 73-69, in double overtime, perhaps the most exciting contest to date, and to Electric Green 68-60.

A three-way tie for third exists and Team White (6-3) edged Electric Green 58-52.

Team Black, also known as Thomas Jefferson University, which until this month had been known as Philadelphia U., edged Team Sky Blue 68-62, which makes things interesting since three more spots need to be filled by next Tuesday night when the regular season ends.

Team Royal Blue was one of the other two teams that cruised, beating Team Purple, also known as Delaware Valley, 69-33 to stay in the three-way group in third place.

Team Purple is winless on the court but does have a forfeit win on July 6 that the Guru will apply to his standings on Thursday night since Purple has the night off, having played Sky Blue already that night since Sky Blue was also without an opponent through a forfeit.

Longtime commissioner David Kessler already applied all outcomes but standings positions have remained the same for both of us and after Thursday we will be back in synch prior to the final night before the playoffs on Tuesday.

Quarterfinals begin Thursday, July 27, followed by the semifinals on Tuesday, August 1, and championship August 3.

In the other one-sided game on Tuesday night, Team Sun, also known as Ursinus College, beat Team Red, also known as Chestnut Hill, 73-41.

The four romps were helpful here because Bob Heller, who has provided the meat and potatoes to the recaps, is on assignment, so a lot of detail is not necessary.

Following the five who have qualified, though seed spots are still to be determined, teams still in the hunt are Electric Green (5-4) and  Sun (5-4), which are tied for sixth, a game in front Orange (4-5), which is holding the last spot either a half-game or whole-game off that forfeit win mentioned, by Sky Blue (3-6), which has just one game left.

Purple and Pink have been eliminated by Red, while a long shot, is not entirely banished if a tie at the bottom falls a certain way.

That will be discussed here if it is still in play after Thursday’s games.

In terms of nightly performers hitting the Guru’s 20 or more points, it was one of the more productive nights with six players hitting the standard, led by Saint Joseph’s senior Chelsea Woods of Electric Green, who had 27 points, making it her seventh night of nine to gain the achievement.

Katie Jekot, an incoming freshman at Saint Joseph’s, had a season-high 26 points for her, in the Sky Blue loss to Team Black, whose Caitlyn Cunningham had 25.

Penn sophomore Kristen Daley had 22 to pace the Sun win and Meghan Pickell of Team Orange had 20, as did Mia Hopkins of Forest Green to round out the half-dozen.

Looking Ahead

Only five games will be played Thursday meaning two doubleheaders and a single game beginning at 7 p.m. with the nightcaps to be played at 8:15 p.m. All have some significance.

Electric Green will be looking to gain a playoff spot at 5-4 meeting Pink (1-8) at 7 on Court 1, while Maroon (8-1) will be looking to clinch first since they have the tiebreak with Forest Green and now need to beat Royal Blue (6-3) at 7 on Court 2. Royal Blue will be looking to improve its seed position.

Black (6-3), will also be looking to gain its seed spot, playing Forest Green on Court 2 at 8:15. Of Course Forest Green will be looking to finish at least second and possibly first if Maroon gets knocked off in its final two games.

Sun (5-4) and Orange (4-5) are still fighting for a playoff spot so it’s a must win for both, more so Orange, when they meet at 8:15 on Court 1.

White (6-3), which has shrugged off an untraditional slow start, will be looking to get to at least second or hold the third spot in the final two games. They meet Red, which will be eliminated with a loss, or possibly hold a key tiebreak with a win.

Sky, as mentioned, beat Purple on July 6, so both have the night off.

Breaking Ties

So here is how the standings set after Tuesday in terms of seed position.

As mentioned, Team Maroon (8-1) and Team Forest Green (7-2) hold the 1-2 slots. In how the three-way got broken for third, all three teams were 1-1 against each other but White gets third on a best-win, hitting Maroon with its only loss to date. Then left head-to-head, Black has played and beaten Royal Blue to land them at fourth and fifth.

Moving on to the tie for sixth, Sun (5-4) has a win head-to-head over Electric Green (5-4) for sixth and seventh and Electric Green, playing Pink, will have the greater odds in its favor the next time on the court with Sun playing Orange.

After that there are no ties but teams still in the hunt with Orange (4-5) eighth heading against Sun, while Sky Blue (3-6 or 4-6) has the night off holding ninth before finishing with Pink.

Red (1-7) is 10th but having to play White and Black in its last two games.

Pink is 11th while Purple is 12th (0-9 or 1-9) and has the night off.

That said, here’s the recaps.

Tuesday Recaps

Team Maroon 91, Team Orange 55

The winners moved closer to finishing first and became a playoff squad with a win headed by Colleen Walsh out of the Shipley School at USciences with 18 points, Alex Thomas scored 17, and Laura Trisch out of Archbiship Wood had 15 aided by three 3-balls, and Marissa Sylvester from Nazareth Academy scored 14.

Maroon continues to be the top defensive team in the summer league.

The loss knocked Orange (4-5) on the edge of playoff territory and should the Holy Family group land in a tie to send one to the post season with Red, the Chestnut Hill group are holding a forfeit win.

Meghan Pickell, an Ithaca junior out of Episcopal Academy, had 20 as mentioned above for Orange, while Meghan Hughes, an incoming Holy Family freshman, had 10 points.

Team Forest Green 70, Team Pink 42

The West Chester group stayed a game behind in the standings in second, led by Mia Hopkins, who had 20, fueled by three treys, while Jen Horvatinovic, a recent Tampa grad, had 15, shooting 4-for-4 from the line, and Siani McNeil from Delco Christian had 14 points.

Grace Dewey had 13 for Pink and Samantha Hicks, a Bryn Athyn junior out of Archbishop Ryan, had 11 points.

Team Black 68, Sky Blue 62

Caitlyn Cunningham from Mount St. Joseph’s had three 3-balls on the way to her 25 for Team Black, while Alynna Williams out of Plymouth Whitemarsh scored 11 in one of the two competitive games of the night.

Behind Katie Jekot’s 26 off of five three-pointers for Sky Blue, Erin Lindahl, an Emory sophomore out of Germantown Academy got 12. Penn sophomore Kendall Grasela out of Germantown Academy, a mainstay this summer for Sky Blue, was unable to attend due to other commitments.

Team White 58, Team Electric Green 52

Saint Joseph’s senior Amanda Fioravanti didn’t hit the 20s for White, but 17 was enough to help the cause against her explosive classmate on the opposition. Nia Holland, a Lafayette junior out of the Shipley School added eight points.

As mentioned Chelsea Woods out of Freire Charter continued to dominate on Electric Green as the Saint Joseph’s senior scored 27, nailing three treys, while Samantha Stipa, a Lafayette senior out of Spring-Ford, scored 13.

Team Royal Blue 69, Team Purple 33

In a balanced attack for the Kutztown group, Michaela Clay, a Saint Joseph’s junior, had 16 points for the winners, Keifonna Ferguson out of Norristown Area High, scored 11, Gabbi Wright, out of Cheltenham High, scored 10, while Taylor Thames, from North Penn, had nine, and Sierra Taylor, from Camden Catholic, scored eight.

No one scored in double figures for Purple, which was led by Sarah Wills, out of Mount St. Joseph’s, with seven points, while Shannon Barlow of Neshaminy had six points, as did Courtney Brown, a recent East Stroudsburg graduate out of Council Rock South.

Team Sun 73, Team Red 41

As mentioned, Kristen Daley, a Penn junior, had 22 for the Ursinus squad, and Lydia Konstanzer out of Pennridge, had 10 points to keep the Sun in playoff contention.

Red got 12 points from Natalie Kucowski, an incoming Lafayette freshman from St. Basil, while Saint Joseph’s senior Avery Marz had nine points, all from three 3-balls, while Cassie Siebold, an incoming Chestnut Hill freshman out of Archbishop Wood, and Kristin Hamill, a Franklin & Marshall sophomore out of Radnor, had seven points each.
